“Prepare the way of the Lord…” Mark 1:3
We are all called to live a holy
life. We are all called to invite
others to live holy lives. Living a
stewardship lifestyle, being
grateful and generous with our
gifts, does just that – it puts us on
the path to holiness, and it invites
others to be holy too.
Can you imagine being hungry?
Can you imagine your baby
being hungry? Most of Catholic
Charities’ Emergency Assistance
Centers requests are for food.
With the number of working poor
on the increase, more people are
turning to us for help. Please
donate to the Catholic Charities
Christmas collection.
I always look forward to this time
of year – December and early January –
because we are privileged to celebrate
three feast days of our Blessed Mother
Mary: Dec. 8, the Solemn Feast of the
Immaculate Conception; Dec. 12, Our
Lady of Guadalupe; and Jan. 1,
Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of
God. This year will be particularly
inspirational to me because Father Tony
and I will be in Rome on Dec. 8, the 160th
anniversary of the proclamation of the
Dogma of the Immaculate Conception by
Pope Pius IX in his papal bull Ineffabilis
Deus in 1854. As you know, Father Tony was ordained on the 100th
anniversary of the proclamation.
The Immaculate Conception is the belief that Mary was
protected from Original Sin, and that the Blessed Mother did NOT
have a sinful nature. She was, in fact, sinless from the moment of her
conception in the womb of St. Anne. The Church teaches that Mary,
the Blessed Mother of Jesus Christ, being kept free from Original Sin,
is repairing the stain Eve brought into the world by giving in to
temptation. The Church further teaches that Mary, by her Immaculate
Conception, is the New Eve. She restores what woman destroyed in
The Fall. Because she was kept from the poisons of Original Sin,
Mary thus was prepared by God to bring Jesus Christ into the world.
Jesus Christ – the One who would be the New Adam –
restores what Adam destroyed in The Fall. This duo brings to us a
wondrous gift: Mary gave birth to Christ – the New Adam. Christ hands
His Spirit over to give birth to the Catholic Church at Pentecost. Christ
entrusts the Sacraments to His Church.
The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe commemorates the
apparitions from Dec. 9 – 12, 1531, of our Blessed Mother to St. Juan
Diego, an Aztec Indian convert, at the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico
City. In the wintry cold of December, Mary arranged rare fresh roses in
Juan’s cloak for him to take as proof to the local bishop that she was
indeed our Blessed Mother. When the flowers tumbled from his cloak,
her image remained. Another proof was the miraculous cure from a
deadly disease of his uncle Juan Bernardino. In 1945 Pope Pius XII
declared Mary Patroness of all the Americas, and in March 1999
raised the day to the rank of Feast for all the Americas. It is a Holy Day
of Obligation in Mexico.
Jan. 1 honors Mary, the Holy Mother of God. We rejoice in
these beautiful feast days and recall the words spoken to Juan Diego,
“I am the perfect and perpetual Virgin Mary, Mother of the True God
through whom everything lives...I will give all my love, my compassion,
my help and my protection to the people.”
Father Storey
Due to the generous donations and chicken from Ascension and Holy
Spirit, the volunteers prepared food and served 365 people at St. Mary’s
Food Kitchen on Friday, November 14th. Thank you for your assistance.
Second Sunday of Advent
Second Sunday of Advent
December 7, 2014
First Reading, Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11(5B) In the first
reading, a prophet has a message of hope for a
weary people. God has prepared a way home for
them.
Second Reading, 2 Peter 3:8-14, In the second
reading, Peter tells us that God has not gone back
on the promise of Jesus’ glorious return. Rather, He
is giving humans time to repent and get ready for
Jesus’ coming.
Gospel, Mark 1:1-8, In the Gospel, Jesus’ identity
and mission are clearly stated. The preparation for
His advent is undertaken by the preaching and

Spirit parishioners have always been generous and agencies are
very grateful for your support. Each ornament on the tree has a

December 11: National Gun Violence Prevention Sabbath
Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence, a coalition of 50 national
denominations and faith-based organizations, is sponsoring a National Gun
Violence Prevention Sabbath on December 11-14, 2014. It is the one time
each year where we come together as a national faith community to reflect,
educate and act to reduce gun violence. Places of worship across the nation
are joining the Washington National Cathedral to remember those who have
lost their lives to gunfire, pray in for those whose lives have been forever
changed because of the loss of a loved one, and to continue the discussion
on how communities of faith can work together to help reduce gun
violence. Please join us at St. James Catholic Church in Kansas City,
Missouri on Thursday, December 11th at 6:30 pm to celebrate Eucharist to
commemorate the occasion. Fr. Joe Nassal, C.PP.S., Provincial Director, will
preside. He will also give a talk following the Mass.
Have you remembered Holy Spirit in your will?
