Annual Report CMYK - Le Jardin Academy
Years of
Educating the
Windward Side
Le Jardin Academy
2009 - 2010
Annual Report
Since 1961, Le Jardin Academy has educated the children of Windward Oahu. The school began
as a one-room preschool with 18 students and one teacher. Today, 50 years later, Le Jardin
Academy has grown into a Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade International Baccalaureate, college
preparatory institution with over 800 students, over 150 faculty and staff, and facilities including
12 buildings, a pool and soccer field, and a new gymnasium and High School building.
Not only has Le Jardin Academy developed year after year, it has persevered through various
societal changes and turbulent economic times. While other schools have closed their doors, this
school year, Le Jardin Academy will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary. Our founder, Madame
Henriette Neal, would be very proud to see how we have sustained and what we have
accomplished over this short amount of time. Congratulations to Le Jardin Academy for “50
years of educating the Windward side!”
Le Jardin Academy’s success would not have been possible without the dedication and support of
our Board of Trustees, parents, employees, grandparents, alumni, friends, and community.
Mahalo to all of our very generous donors for making Le Jardin Academy what it is today.
This 2009 - 2010 Annual Report acknowledges the individuals and organizations that have made a
contribution to Le Jardin Academy during the fiscal year, July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010. We strive
to accurately publish our donor lists, however, please contact Le Jardin Academy’s Development
Office if we have misspelled or omitted any name. We welcome any questions or comments

Message from the Headmaster
The school year began with the opening of Le Jardin Academy’s spectacular new
gymnasium. It was a major event that was attended by many local dignitaries
including the Mayor and Lieutenant Governor as well as State Senators and
Representatives. The addition of the new gymnasium not only provides a training
facility for our athletes, it has strengthened our school spirit and sense of “ohana.”
An important objective for the school year was to improve Le Jardin Academy’s
brand recognition. In an effort to do this, the school increased its presence in all
areas of the media, appearing on TV frequently and in newspapers and magazines regularly. Le Jardin also
sponsored a number of events on campus to familiarize the community with the school. Perhaps the most
significant development regarding Le Jardin Academy’s brand recognition was the creation of a brand new website.
Also this year, authorization to become the first International Baccalaureate World School in Hawaii, offering both
the Primary Years and Middle Years Programme, showcased Le Jardin Academy as a true educational leader in the
islands. Our commitment to produce a new strategic plan to guide the school over the next ten years was another
endeavor that proved that Le Jardin has no intention of sitting back and resting on past achievements. Other areas
of progress include better access to the Internet, improved wireless connectivity on campus, a reorganized
graduation ceremony, a restructured fundraising gala, a stronger athletics program, and winning our first
Interscholastic League of Hawaii (ILH) championship.
The school has every reason to be proud of its achievements in 2009 - 2010. Most schools would have been
pleased to have managed any one of these major improvements in a single year; Le Jardin Academy handled them
all successfully. These accomplishments would have been much more challenging without the support of our
donors who have continued to show their generosity and aloha for Le Jardin Academy over the years.
So we come to 2010 - 2011 and embark on our 50th year as a school, celebrate 10 years at our new campus, and
invite our first graduating class to return for their five year reunion. We are looking forward to all the new
challenges of another school year because it is through finding solutions to these challenges that new ideas are
born. Le Jardin Academy is determined to remain an energetic and creative educational leader in the state.
Sincerely,
Adrian Allan, President and Headmaster

A Home For The Bulldogs
In September 2010, Le Jardin Academy celebrated the opening of its newly
constructed gymnasium. The gymnasium features two full-sized regulation courts, a
weight room, dance studio, concession stand, and athletic training room, retractable
bleacher seating for 450, four locker rooms, and capabilities for badminton, indoor
soccer, basketball, and volleyball. The new gymnasium is not only a beautiful and
well equipped facility, it is a much needed space where Le Jardin Academy’s physical
education students can learn various sports and exercise their bodies. The
gymnasium allows our athletes to properly train and condition so they can compete
at an optimal level. Most importantly, the gymnasium represents a home for the
Bulldogs, a home court where Le Jardin Academy’s fans can proudly and confidently
root for their team.
An Identity for the High School
Le Jardin Academy’s campus witnessed some dramatic changes in the past year with
the completion of its new High School building. The state-of-the-art 9,000 square
foot facility offers 8 fully air conditioned classrooms equipped with wireless internet
connection, SmartBoards, and a Voice Over Internet Protocol telephone system.
The 4 science labs in the building feature lab tables, a fume hood and emergency
shower, locked storage areas for chemicals and supplies, and a chemistry prep room
via an adjoining window. The addition of the High School building provides the
space needed to accommodate all classes and staff support. More significantly, the
new building gives Le Jardin Academy’s High School students an area of their very
own, an identity as a High School.

2009 - 2010 Accomplishments
Hawaii’s First International
Baccalaureate World School
After many years of training, re-structuring
curriculum, and adjusting the way we teach, during the
2009 - 2010 school year, Le Jardin Academy was
authorized by the International Baccalaureate to offer a
certified Primary Years and Middle Years Programme
to students in Pre-Kindergarten to 10th grade.
The International Baccalaureate is a method of teaching where lessons are not designed around
subjects (Math, English, Science, etc.), but planned around a question; to which various subjects
are intertwined. It is a program that emphasizes inquiry, group work, critical thinking, community
service, and foreign language.
Regarded as the world’s most prominent educational program, the IB offers a comprehensive and
rigorous curriculum that provides students with the best grounding to attend college. A recent
study concluded IB Diploma graduates, when compared to a population of all graduates, scored
higher on the SAT (1309 compared to 1026) and graduated from college in fewer years, with
higher grades. Not only are IB students well prepared for the challenges of college, they are
suited for life beyond graduation. Due to the global perspective and real-life application that the
IB emphasizes, students will be able to effectively function in a variety of work and personal
environments with a mix of people and points of view.
Le Jardin is very proud to offer such an outstanding program and to be able to provide its
students with an education that will not only bring them success in college, but in their future
endeavors as well. In 2011, Le Jardin Academy will work to obtain authorization by the IB for
grades 11 and 12, thus becoming the first complete International Baccalaureate World School in
Hawaii, and one of only 8 schools in the nation to achieve this prestigious status.

A Year of Firsts
The 2009 - 2010 school year brought about many firsts for Le Jardin Academy. In
October of 2009, the school proudly won its first Interscholastic League of Hawaii
(ILH) division one championship, as Le Jardin Academy’s talented varsity kayaking
team beat out the best of the best in the ILH and brought home the 1st place prize.
While some of Le Jardin Academy’s students excelled on the water, another proved
to be at the top of his class by gaining admittance into Yale University and becoming
Le Jardin Academy’s first student to attend an Ivy League university. Le Jardin
Academy’s academic excellence was demonstrated yet again as two Le Jardin
Academy graduates, for the first time in the school’s history, were named Fulbright
Scholars, and one Valedictorian of her university. Congratulations to Le Jardin
Academy and its students for their tremendous achievements and success.

Capital Campaign Supporters
The Capital Campaign is a fundraising effort that supports Le Jardin Academy’s building and
facility improvement and expansion needs. In early 2007, Le Jardin Academy embarked on Phase
IIA of a Capital Campaign to build a Middle and High School Library, 18 additional classrooms,
and a Gymnasium. Thanks to our very generous 2009 - 2010 Phase IIA Capital Campaign
donors, Le Jardin Academy is able to update its learning environment and provide the best
possible resources for its students.
$1 Million Match
In 2005, the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation approved a grant to assist Le Jardin Academy’s Phase
IIA Capital Campaign efforts. The $1,000,000 grant was issued with the understanding that Le
Jardin Academy’s current and former Trustees garner another $1,000,000 to further accelerate the
fundraising drive. Le Jardin Academy is deeply grateful for the individuals who made payments to
the $1 Million Match during the 2009 - 2010 fiscal year.

Name Plate Fundraiser
In 2009, Le Jardin Academy initiated a naming opportunity where Le Jardin Academy constituents
were given the opportunity to purchase a name plate to be displayed on the gymnasium bleachers
and remain in perpetuity. Le Jardin Academy is thankful for the individuals who took advantage
of this naming opportunity and purchased name plates during the 2009 - 2010 fiscal year. The
contributions from our name plate donors make it possible for Le Jardin Academy to not only
continue to meet its educational goals, but to be equipped for the opportunities and changes that
lie ahead.
