Dear
Friends,
With this report, we have the privilege of reviewing the past year with
you and looking forward to our goals for this year and beyond. In
2010, Children’s Hospital and Health System made tremendous strides
toward helping our kids become the healthiest in the nation.
We count receiving board approval of our new strategic plan among
our most important accomplishments in the past year. The plan calls
for developing truly unique national programs, becoming the Midwest’s
leading pediatric health care provider and improving population health
for Wisconsin children.
Of course, that’s the bottom line for us – doing what is best for the
health and well-being of kids. With that in mind, we’re proud to share
a few 2010 highlights your generosity and support allowed us to achieve:
• Opened the state’s first pediatric hybrid cath lab to treat complex
heart problems.
• Introduced Awareness2Action, a statewide training initiative aimed at
reducing child abuse and neglect.
•P
artnered with Kohl’s to create “It’s Your Move,” an interactive exhibit
at Betty Brinn Children’s Museum.
•H
osted our first prom at the hospital for kids who missed their own
schools’ proms due to health considerations.
•O
pened the Noel Family Healing Garden adjacent to the hospital
lobby, offering a peaceful outdoor oasis for our patients and families.
•B
ecame the second pediatric hospital in the nation to offer low-dose
radiation scanning, improving both safety and comfort for kids who
need frequent scans.
•O
pened the Newborn Progressive Care Unit to provide step-down
care for patients from our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – an
important milestone in our plan to expand newborn and fetal
care services.

roke ground on a new dental and medical care center at Next Door
Foundation in Milwaukee’s Metcalfe Park neighborhood.
• Received worldwide recognition for using genetic sequencing to
identify a rare disorder that was threatening a child’s life.
• Recruited 198 new foster homes, exceeding a goal established by the
Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare.
• Provided full scholarships for three NICU nurses to earn their
master’s degrees.
• Greatly advanced Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia and hemophilia A
research and made significant progress toward a cure.
When we reflect on this list, one thing is clear: We couldn’t accomplish
any of these milestones without your support. Through your gifts
of time, talent and dollars, we are saving lives, treating and curing
disease, rebuilding troubled families and helping create new families.
We are committed to continuing to achieve incredible results for kids

Meet
Mason
Mason was born at 25 weeks, weighing only 1 pound, 15 ounces. He
spent 12 weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Today Mason is a
healthy, active 5-year-old and has no long-term health concerns due
to his prematurity. A generous gift from Christopher and Kelly Rebholz
is providing full scholarships for NICU nurses to earn their master’s
degrees and become certified as neonatal nurse practitioners. To
date, six nurses have received scholarships. These advanced practice
nursing positions are a vital component of our newborn care model,
helping kids like Mason.
Meet
Megan
Since birth, Megan struggled with abdominal swelling and feeding
intolerance. As an infant, she was admitted multiple times to hospitals
near her Chicago-area home and was placed on IV nutrition support.
At 9 months old, Megan was referred to specialists at our Motility
and Functional Bowel Disorders Program. After a comprehensive
evaluation by the team, she was diagnosed with small bowel and
colonic dysmotility. Part of her bowel was later removed. Today, Megan
is an active preschooler who enjoys eating three meals a day. She likes
ballet, tap dancing and swimming. Donors Bruce and Faith Laning,
along with other friends and patient families, have helped form a GI
Family and Friends group to help raise awareness and funding for the
program’s clinical and research needs.

Meet
Tara
Neurofibromatosis type 1 is a genetic disorder with a wide range of
symptoms ranging from birthmarks and freckling to skeletal problems,
neurological issues and vision loss. Tara, a mother of three, was
diagnosed with NF1 as a child. All three of her children, Christina,
Daniel and Christopher, inherited NF1. A couple years ago, Christina
was diagnosed with a build-up of fluid inside her skull and a possible
optic tumor. She underwent surgery and continues to be monitored but
has returned to school and is keeping up with her brothers and friends.
Through a generous estate gift, The Charlotte Promersberger Johnston
Endowed Genetics Research Fund was established. Continuous funding
sources such as this are essential for ongoing research that creates
hope for a bright future for Christina and all those living with NF1.
Meet
David
During a car ride, David began falling in and out of consciousness.
He was rushed to the nearest hospital, where he was diagnosed with
epilepsy. For the next year, he made many trips to the hospital and
took six different medications, but his seizures continued. He began
experiencing cognitive and speech delays, increased hyperactivity and
inattentiveness. The family transferred David to Children’s Hospital
of Wisconsin, where the team quickly developed a plan. After a full
evaluation, including a stay in our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, caregivers
prescribed a new medication that controlled his seizures. “Our life
truly was given back to us by Children’s Hospital,” said David’s mom.
The Heidi Marie Bauman Chair in Pediatric Epilepsy, funded by Heidi’s
grandparents, has helped Children’s Hospital’s epilepsy program
become a regional leader.
