George Szal, a Marist who has worked many years in the missions. The Marists have run Notre Dame des Victoires on Bush Street, and we look forward to hearing Fr. George’s reports from the missions today. Eucharistic Miracles: Many heartfelt thanks to Leslie Low and all who helped bring the Eucharistic Miracles exhibit to our parish. Hundreds came to see the miracles from around the world, and many will commit to a weekly holy hour before the Sacrament when we get our chapel up and running this summer. Thanks also to those who have given towards the construction of that chapel. See our website for progress. After the Psalm, we hear the “epistle,” usually from a letter of St. Paul or St. Peter. Think of these as personal letters to our own parish from one of the apostles. A Charlie Brown cartoon once showed Linus coming home from a Sunday School study of St. Paul’s letters. “I always feel like I’ve been reading someone else’s mail,” he told his sister. The Epistle is our mail, a letter to us. Fatima First Saturday after 8:30am Mass NEWS The Sunday Scriptures by Fr. Joseph Illo Simon do you love me? [Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41, Revelation 5:11-14, John 21:1-19] “We must obey God rather than men,” St. Peter tells the Jewish leaders. God is certainly asking of us things clean contrary to what the world is demanding of us at this time. The world demands “tolerance” of evil and falsehood, and God asks us to love in truth. “Simon,” Jesus asks Peter in the Gospel, “do you love me more than these?” Do we? We want to hear from you! The time is coming to tell us about what you like about our parish, what concerns you and how we can improve. And in our upcoming parish survey, you will have just the place to tell us. Over the next two weeks or so, every registered household will receive a parish survey. We ask that you take time to read through it, respond to each question and then mail it back to the parish office in the return envelope provided or drop it in the offertory basket. You can also complete it online through the link found on our parish website. To help our parish become better and spiritually stronger, we ask for your feedback. Thank you in advance for your participation. Divine Mercy Film On Sunday May 22nd in the Parish Center Gym at 5:30pm, we will show a documentary film on the original image of the Divine Mercy commissioned by St. Faustina on a jumbo 20 foot screen. Hot dogs and pop corn will be available for sale from the Holy Name Society. After the film, as part of our Star Speakers Series, the director of the film will give a presentation on the making of the film and will be available to answer questions. More information will be available next week. SCHOOL Dear Parents and Parishioners, Father Illo, Father Perrone and I are writing to let you know about a very important long-term project that is beginning in our parish and school community. We are all, of course, aware that we live, work, pray and attend school in “earthquake country” here in the Bay Area. Most often we do not give another thought to that reality and we go on with our daily business. Every so often, however, new information comes up around an issue, and as a result actions are taken. With that idea in mind, the Archdiocese of San Francisco recently provided extensive engineering seismic analysis for all of our San Francisco Catholic schools. Knowing that all of our schools were constructed over forty-plus years or more, the archdiocese is attempting to assist all our schools in setting up long-term goals for each of the school facilities. Each of our school buildings went through the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake with little or no damage, which speaks to the integrity of our facilities for that specific earthquake. As responsible stewards of our schools’ students, faculty, and staff, however, we want to strengthen the structures of our school buildings to increase the safety of all parties in any future earthquakes. Over the coming months, each of our San Francisco Catholic schools will begin to formulate a long-term strategic plan to address and fund the work that has been noted in the engineering seismic reports. Once the strategic plans are developed and finalized, a timeline for the work to begin will then be proposed. In most cases, we anticipate that the work will take place over a period of two, three or more years. In order to avoid interrupting the students’ academic programs during the school year, we expect that the work can be done during summer vacations. Over the next few months, we and our parish and school committee will be meeting with the engineers to put together our parish and school strategic plan. We will keep everyone informed as this plan is being developed, and we certainly welcome your input and professional advice along the way. Years ago, the founding parish and school families at every archdiocesan school pooled together their time, energy and treasure to establish the strong faith-filled learning environment each one of your children enjoy today. We know that you, today’s parish and school families, will again rally around that same goal to ensure that future generations of students will have the opportunities that your own children have been given today. We thank you for your support of Catholic education over the years and ask that you join us in prayer as we begin this journey together for our children today and the future generations of children who will be educated in our Catholic schools here in San Francisco. Please join us next Wednesday, April 13, at 7:00 pm for our Parent Club meeting to hear more about this exciting project. Sincerely, Fr. Joseph Illo , Fr.
