More than 80% of residents at Maimonides
have Alzheimers or some other form of
dementia. Many are non-verbal and unable to
communicate their needs. They depend on staff
for all their activities of daily living. Staff does
their best to provide compassionate care but
they have little or no knowledge of what the
residents were once like.
In order to adapt a care plan for each resident
that preserves their dignity and best meets
their individual needs, it is important for staff
to understand the resident’s past history and
life experiences. It isn’t enough to simply know
their health profile. The Interdisciplinary
Committee at Maimonides has come up with the Life Bio Project.
Working with the family, a PowerPoint presentation is created using
pictures, family history and music that is shown to staff to help them
better understand the resident.
The pilot-project is on the second and third floors with the goal of
implementing it centre-wide. “When you get to know people, you get
to love them. That is the value,” says Frances Perelle, a volunteer who
helps assemble the videos.
Plus de 80 % des résidents de Maimonides souffrent de la maladie l’Alzheimer
ou d’une autre forme de démence. Nombre d’entre eux ne parlent plus et ne
peuvent pas faire connaître leurs besoins. Ils doivent se fier au personnel pour
toutes leurs activités quotidiennes. Le personnel fait de son mieux pour leur
prodiguer des soins avec compassion mais il sait très peu, sinon rien, de ce que
les résidents étaient auparavant.
Afin de personnaliser un programme de soins qui préserve la dignité et
répond le mieux possible aux besoins des résidents, il est important que le
personnel soit au courant de leurs antécédents
et de leur vécu. Ce n’est pas suffisant de
connaître seulement leur état de santé. Dans
cette perspective, le Comité interdisciplinaire
du Centre gériatrique Maimonides a mis sur
pied le projet Biographie. Avec le consentement
de la famille, ce projet peut comprendre une
présentation PowerPoint sur le résident,
incluant des photos, l’historique de sa famille et
même de la musique, qui est montrée au
personnel afin qu’il puisse en savoir plus sur le
résident et préparer un programme de soins
personnalisés
Ce projet pilote se réalise aux deuxième et
troisième étages et nous prévoyons l’implanter
à l’échelle du centre.

a Maimonides resident who now suffers from Alzheimers.

Preventing FALLS
Program decreases risk and injury
Un programme qui réduit les risques et les blessures
Most residents of Maimonides Geriatric Centre are at
risk of falls given their advanced age and multiple
medical conditions. The most common serious injury
from falls is a hip fracture. Many seniors have a fear of
falling which leads to decreased activity and the loss
of strength and mobility. That, in turn, leads to an
increased risk of falling, and the fall cycle continues.
The Maimonides Fall Prevention Program, which is
being piloted on the 7 th floor, aims to stop the fall cycle
by decreasing the risk of falls. The Program also
includes ways to decrease the severity of injury if a
person does fall. Some of the tools being used include
activities such as dancing, folding linen or coffee
parties to keep wandering residents interested and
strengthening their muscles while reducing the
chance of a fall. The use of hip protectors and helmets
also minimize the severity of injury.
The Fall Prevention program was spearheaded by
Dr. Manuel Montero, who was the first Fellow in
the Maimonides/McGill/Jewish General Hospital
Division of Geriatric Medicine Fellowship program.
His position was funded by the Maimonides
Foundation. Dr. Montero’s research on falls has been
published in several peer-reviewed publications.
Compte tenu de leur âge avancé et de leurs multiples troubles
médicaux, la plupart des résidents du Centre gériatrique
Maimonides présentent un risque de chute. La blessure la plus
courante résultant d’une chute est la fracture de la hanche.
Beaucoup d’aînés ont peur de tomber, ce qui les amène à limiter
leurs activités et à perdre de la force musculaire et de la
souplesse – ce qui, à son tour, entraîne un plus grand risque de
chute. Un cercle décidément vicieux.
Le programme de prévention des chutes de Maimonides, qui
est piloté au 7 e étage, vise à briser le cycle des chutes en
réduisant les risques qui y sont associés. Le programme
comprend des conseils pour limiter la gravité d’une blessure en
cas de chute. Parmi les divers outils utilisés, il y a des activités
comme la danse, le pliage de linge et des pauses-café qui
éveillent l’intérêt des résidents et les aident à renforcer leurs
muscles, tout en réduisant le risque de chute. Le port d’un
protège-hanche et d’un casque protecteur peut aussi atténuer la
gravité d’une blessure.
Le programme de prévention des chutes est dirigé par
Dr Manuel Montero, premier associé du programme de bourses
de recherche conjoint de Maimonides, de l’Université McGill et
de la division de gériatrie de l’Hôpital général juif. Son poste
est financé par la Fondation de Maimonides et les résultats
des recherches du D r Montero sont parus dans plusieurs
publications importantes.

AVRUM ORENSTEIN
Maimonides will hold a special Kiddush following Shabbat
services on May 13 th 2006 in the synagogue to honour the late
Avrum Orenstein.
As senior partner and litigator at Orenstein and Associates,
Avrum represented Maimonides as its labour lawyer for over 20
years. Most recently, as president of the Jewish Public
Establishments Commission, he led negotiations with the
Quebec government to preserve Jewish control over our
community’s health-care institutions.
Archie Deskin, immediate past President of Maimonides admired Avrum’s
outstanding leadership and untiring efforts on behalf of Maimonides and the
Jewish community. “Those of us associated with Maimonides are eternally
grateful for his role in mitigating potentially damaging legislation.”
Maimonides Centre Board President Len Lewkowict worked very closely with
Avrum and JPEC. “He cared very deeply about the community’s long-term
welfare and had such deep knowledge of how the health care system worked. He
taught me nothing is black and white when it comes to health care and the key to
success is mastering the process. I learned a lot from Avrum,” says Lewkowict.
Orenstein passed away suddenly in December. He is survived by his wife Pearl,
daughters Heather (Mark Frankel), Aviva (Michael Kalin), son Jeff (Michelle)
and many grandchildren. Avrum’s sister Susan and Jeff are continuing the
Orenstein law practice started by Avrum’s father Louis Orenstein, a great
community leader.
The community is invited to pay tribute to Avrum at the upcoming Kiddush in
the Maimonides synagogue.

À titre d’associé principal et avocat plaidant de la firme Orenstein
and Associates, Avrum a représenté Maimonides en droit du travail
depuis plus de 20 ans. Récemment, comme président de la
Commission des établissements publics juifs (JPEC), il a dirigé des
négociations avec le gouvernement du Québec afin que la
communauté juive maintienne le contrôle de ses établissements de
soins de santé.
Archie Deskin, président sortant de Maimonides, admirait le
leadership exceptionnel et les efforts infatigables d’Avrum pour le compte de
Maimonides et de la communauté juive. « Toute personne qui est associée à
Maimonides lui sera à jamais reconnaissante pour le rôle qu’il a joué en
atténuant les risques résultant des lois potentiellement préjudiciables. »
Leonard Lewkowict, président du Centre, a travaillé en étroite collaboration
avec Avrum et la JPEC. « Le bien-être de la communauté lui tenait beaucoup à
coeur et il connaissait tous les tenants et les aboutissants du fonctionnement du
système des soins de santé. Grâce à lui, j’ai compris qu’il y a des zones grises dans
tout et lorsqu’il est question des soins de santé, la clé du succès consiste à
maîtriser le processus. Avrum m’a beaucoup appris », affirme Lewkowict.
Avrum Orenstein est décédé soudainement en décembre. Il laisse dans le deuil
son épouse Pearl, ses filles Heather (Mark Frankel) et Aviva (Michael Kalin), son
fils Jeff (Michelle) et de nombreux petits-enfants. Jeff et la soeur d’Avrum, Susan,
poursuivent la pratique du droit au même cabinet, fondé par le père d’Avrum,
Louis Orenstein, un grand leader de la communauté.
La communauté est invitée à rendre hommage à Avrum Oreinstein lors du
Kiddush qui aura lieu dans la synagogue de Maimonides.

A rock’n success!
Two sellout years and a huge demand led Maimonides to a two-night
Battle of the Bands fundraiser bringing in record profits and
attendance. 600 people per night packed Club Soda on Wednesday
December 7 th and Thursday December 8th to hear eight amateur bands
made up of dentists, lawyers and other professionals belt it out to raise
funds for Maimonides Geriatric Centre. The 3 rd annual Maimonides
Battle of the Bands was a rock’n success generating $145,000 towards
the Suite Dreams Capital Renovation campaign to refurbish all of the
residents’ rooms.
“Wow! Two incredible nights. It was wonderful to see so many
important people in the community come out for two evenings of
great fun and to support a great cause,” says Rory Olson, co-chair of
the Battle of the Bands committee. “There is such a huge buzz in the
community about this event. Through the Battle of the Bands, we have
managed to turn Maimonides and long-term care into a sexy charity,”
adds co-chair Elliot Mechanic.
Thanks to every one who helped make the 2005 Maimonides Battle
of the Bands a rock’n success. We look forward to the 2006 event on
December 6 th and 7 th, this year at the Spectrum.

Un succès « rock » !
Une salle comble deux ans d’affilée et une forte demande : il n’en fallait
pas plus pour que Maimonides réserve deux soirs pour la collecte de
fonds Battle of the Bands. L’événement a enregistré des profits et une
assistance record cette année. En effet, 600 personnes ont rempli
le Club Soda les 7 et 8 décembre derniers pour voir et écouter huit
orchestres amateurs, formés de dentistes, d’avocats et d’autres
professionnels qui se sont dépensés pour recueillir des fonds au profit
du Centre gériatrique Maimonides. La troisième édition annuelle de
Battle of the Bands a récolté la coquette somme de 145 000 $, ce qui
contribuera à remettre à neuf toutes les chambres des résidents dans
le cadre de la campagne Suites Royales.
« Wow ! Deux soirs incroyables. Quel plaisir toutes ces personnes
importantes de la collectivité se déplacer pour appuyer une
cause valable et passer une soirée agréable », de dire Rory Olson,
co-président du comité Battle of the Bands. « Cet événement fait
beaucoup parler de lui dans la collectivité. Grâce à Battle of the Bands,
nous avons réussi à faire de Maimonides et des soins de longue
durée une activité caritative excitante », ajoute Elliot Mechanic,
co-président du comité.
Merci à tous ceux qui ont aidé à faire de l’événement Battle of the
Bands de Maimonides un succès « rock ». Nous avons déjà hâte à
l’événement de 2006, qui aura lieu le 6 et 7 décembre au Spectrum.

The Maimonides Foundation is
committed to providing state-ofthe art equipment to meet the
requirements of residents who are
arriving at the Centre with greater
needs than ever before. Recently, the
Foundation acquired several new
pieces of much-needed equipment
thanks to the generosity of our
wonderful donors.
A Nu-Step machine was purchased
for the 7 th floor, giving residents the
opportunity to exercise without
leaving their own Unit. This $7,000
machine is designed to provide a
cardiovascular workout for residents
with compromised physical abilities
and was purchased with a donation by
Beamish House to honour two
residents.
The Foundation recently purchased
a $22,000 bladder scanner as a
noninvasive way to determine urinary

Sharing expertise
Linda August, Assistant to the Director of Nursing and Clinical Services, was
a guest speaker at the Congregation Shaare Zedek. She presented “One Size
does not fit all: Services for Older Persons.” Ms. August also served as a
panelist for Older Adults and Emergency Services at the International
Interdisciplinary Conferences on Emergencies.
Roz Friend, Volunteer Resource Development, wrote an article on
Volunteerism and Adult Learning for the Quebec Association for Adult
Learning (QAAL) newsletter.
Viola Kam, Occupational Therapist, through Medical Services International,
gave a presentation about dysphagia to staff at Hospital Centres in Schezuan.
Silvana Mauro, Professional Coordinator-Rehabilitation, is the Occupational
Therapy representative on a Provincial Committee developing an Education
program on the use of physical restraints and isolation.
Lucie Tremblay, Director of Nursing and Clinical Services, gave a
presentation about our award-winning restraint reduction policy at several
conferences including: Salon des Meilleures Pratiques Mouvement Qualité
Québec, Colloque de l’institut de gériatrie de Sherbrooke, CSSS la Pommeraie
in Cowansville, Québec, Journée de la Qualité (CHUQ) in Quebec City.
Ms. Tremblay also gave a presentation about the role of the RNA at the
Quebec Order of Nurses conference in November.
Paula Levinson, Head Nurse, gave a presentation about the Maimonides Fall
Prevention Program at the Canadian Health Care Symposium from the
Canadian Patient Safety Institute in Calgary, Alberta. She was joined by
Dr. Manuel Montero to present the Fall Prevention Program at the Annual
Scientific Meeting of the American Geriatrics Society in Orlando, Florida.

Empowerment of the Elderly) was featured in a Canadian Jewish News article.
The Maimonides restraint-reduction program was featured in a one-hour series

Dr. MARCEL ARCAND studies
End of Life care
The very nature of long-term care means that end
of life issues are inevitable. When health
deteriorates, either the spouse, child or someone
close to the sick person must represent them
during the discussions about end of life care. This
is a sensitive task that many are not prepared for.
Dr. Marcel Arcand is the Head of the Long-term
Care Programme at the Institut de gériatrie de
l’Université de Sherbrooke and has studied
geriatrics for more than 20 years. He is
conducting a research project at Maimonides
about end of life care. He, along with his team,
has developed a booklet to provide caregivers
with information to understand how illnesses like Alzheimers progress towards
the final stages. It also provides information about an approach to care that
ensures a comfortable end of life.
These booklets are being distributed to families of Maimonides residents as
they near the end stages of life. A study is being conducted with families of
residents who had access to the information and families of residents who
passed away before the information was available. The goal is to assess the
usefulness of the guide.
“We want to see whether providing information is helpful to families and
gives them peace of mind or whether knowing what to expect is more painful
and unnecessary,” says Dr. Arcand.
Maimonides staff is being trained on the use of the booklet and has already
started its distribution. Dr. Arcand is this year’s Maimonides/McGill/Jewish
General Hospital Division of Geriatric Medicine Fellow. His position is funded
by the Maimonides Foundation.
Results of the study should be available in 2007.

Le D r MARCEL ARCAND étudie les soins aux

De par sa nature même, les soins de longue durée impliquent des questions de
fin de vie incontournables. Lorsque la santé d’une personne se détériore, le
conjoint, un enfant ou un proche doit parler en son nom durant les discussions
portant sur les soins en fin de vie. Peu de personnes sont préparées pour des
tâches aussi délicates que celle-là.
Le Dr Marcel Arcand est directeur du programme de soins de longue durée de
l’Institut de gériatrie de l’Université de Sherbrooke et il étudie la gériatrie depuis
plus de 20 ans. Il dirige présentement un projet de recherche sur les soins aux
personnes en fin de vie au Centre gériatrique Maimonides. Avec son équipe, il
a préparé un livret qui fournit aux soignants de l’information sur la progression
d’une maladie, comme la maladie d’Alzheimer, durant les derniers stades. On y
traite aussi de l’approche des soins de confort en fin de vie.
Ce livret est distribué aux familles des résidents de Maimonides lorsque ceuxci approchent leur fin de vie. Une étude est en cours auprès des familles qui ont

de santé qui a eu lieu à l’Institut canadien de la sécurité du patient de Calgary.
Le Dr Manuel Montero et elle ont présenté ce même programme à la réunion
de la American Geriatrics Society à Orlando, en Floride.

Le personnel de Maimonides a été formé sur l’utilisation de ce livret et a déjà
commencé sa distribution. D r Arcand est le boursier titulaire de cette année du
groupe Maimonides/McGill/Division gériatrique de l’Hôpital général juif. Son
poste est financé par la Fondation de Maimonides.
Les résultats de l’étude devraient être prêts en 2007.
Le projet GATE (Group for Advancement through Therapeutic Empowerment of the
Elderly) de Maimonides a fait l’objet d’un article dans le Canadian Jewish News.
Le programme de réduction des moyens de contention de Maimonides a paru

On the Campaign Trail
The Suite Dreams Capital Renovation
Campaign is in full swing. “This is the largest
Capital Campaign ever undertaken by the
Maimonides Foundation. Alan and I are excited
to take it to the next level,” says co-chair Michael
Corber.
This campaign is an ambitious undertaking
that will see the total refurbishment of all
resident rooms with dramatic changes to
furniture, lighting, flooring, closets, bathrooms
and overall quality of life. The renovations will
incorporate all the advances in geriatric
furnishings that have occurred since the 1960’s, when Maimonides
was built. “The committee is very excited to work on this project of
utmost importance. Our residents need us and Michael and I want to
ensure that we deliver a more comfortable and home-like
environment to every one,” says co-chair Alan Schwartz.
The 5th floor is the first to be updated with a quarter floor now
complete. It takes two weeks to redo three rooms with the least
amount of disturbance to the residents. Residents whose rooms are
being worked on are moved for the two-week period into the solarium
which has been transformed into a three-bedded room. An extra staff
member, funded by the Foundation, has been added to ease the
transition. It should take approximately three months to complete
each wing. All the resident floors should be refurbished by 2010.
“The remodeled rooms are the envy of all residents. As our rooms are
completed, the residents look forward to showing off their new “homes”
and are proud of where they reside. My goal is simply that as a team, we
strive for excellence in all that we do at Maimonides,” says Corber.

En pleine campagne
La campagne de rénovation Suites royales bat
son plein. « Il s’agit de la plus importante
campagne de financement jamais entreprise
par la Fondation de Maimonides. Alan et moi
sommes très enthousiastes à l’idée de la faire
passer à un niveau supérieur », affirme le coprésident Michael Corber.
Cette campagne est un projet ambitieux
qui aura pour résultat la remise à neuf de
toutes les chambres des résidents. Il y aura
d’importants changements au mobilier, à
l’éclairage, aux couvre-planchers, aux
placards, aux salles de bain, et surtout à la qualité globale du Centre.
Ces rénovations comprendront du mobilier gériatrique de pointe,
qui a été perfectionné depuis la construction du Centre dans les
années 1960. « Le comité est emballé de travailler à un projet de si
grande importance. Les résidents ont besoin de nous et Michael et
moi voulons nous assurer de fournir à chacun d’eux un milieu
confortable et familial », déclare le co-président Alan Schwartz.
Les rénovations ont commencé au 5 e étage, et le quart des
rénovations est déjà terminé. Pour déranger le moins possible les
résidents, il faut compter deux semaines pour refaire trois
chambres. Pendant cette période, les résidents déménagent au
solarium, qui a été transformé en chambre à trois lits. Pour faciliter
la transition, une autre personne a été engagée, grâce au
financement de la Fondation. Les travaux dans chaque aile
devraient prendre environ trois mois. Tous les étages où logent les
résidents seront remis à neuf d’ici 2010.
« Les nouvelles chambres font l’envie de tous les résidents; ils en
sont très fiers et ont hâte de faire visiter leur nouveau logis. Bref,
l’objectif que je vise pour notre équipe est de viser l’excellence dans
tout ce que nous faisons à Maimonides », ajoute M. Corber.

Maimonides recently partnered with the Jewish
Eldercare Centre to have a joint Clinical Ethics
Committee. “The Jewish community has common
ethical issues. A joint committee allows us to pool our
knowledge base and work together in a spirit of
cooperation,” says chairperson Lily Shatsky.
The Ethics Committee reviews ethical issues
concerning residents and prepares recommendations
to the parties concerned. Common issues include
end of life decisions or conflict regarding resident
care. A recommendation from the committee is
usually available within a couple of weeks.
The Ethics Committee is comprised of individuals
from both long-term care facilities representing all
disciplines including management, nursing, medical,
professional services, chaplaincy and social services.
There is also representation from the community
including a lawyer with expertise in the field of Ethics.
“Every one benefits from this kind of communal
sharing of resources,” adds Shatsky.

Endowment Funds provide a way for donors to give a gift that
will keep giving and growing far beyond their own lifetimes.
These gifts can be made in honour of a special occasion or in
memory of a loved one.
A minimum of $1200 is required to establish an endowment
fund at Maimonides.
The initial tax deductible gift to an endowment fund is invested
for growth in the financial market and the interest earned is
used to fund programs at Maimonides. Endowment fund names
appear on the donor boards in the main lobby and active funds
are listed in every Perspective publication. Donors can continue
to add to the Fund through the use of our Tribute Card service.
