Maimonides’ 1st Sephardic
Sefer Torah Dedication
More than 150 guests, dignitaries, volunteers and staff gathered in the Maimonides
Synagogue on February 7th for a joyous celebration to welcome Maimonides’ first
Sephardic Sefer Torah. Commissioned in Israel, this magnificent torah was
generously donated by the Assouline Family in honour of their mother, Mme Simy
Assouline, a resident at Maimonides.
The Talmud says that anyone who fulfills the
commandment of participating in the writing
of a torah scroll is considered as if he received
the Torah on Mount Sinai. Rabbi Michael Wolff
delivered a moving D’var Torah and quoted
from the book of Deuteronomy: “So now, write
this song for your-selves and teach it to the
Children of Israel”. (Deut. 31:19)
In keeping with tradition, the evening
resembled a festive wedding, complete with
delicious food, music, singing and dancing.
The “Torah Bride” was carried under the
PERSPECTIVE
2008
chuppah by four generations of the
Assouline Family in a lively procession
through the halls of Maimonides into the
Synagogue. Rabbi Shalom Chriqui
passionately auctioned off the final
letters, portions of the torah, and stitches
as Rabbi David Cohen assisted by
completing the torah.
The celebration touched the hearts of
everyone who shared in the mitzvah of
completing this new Sefer Torah and
$23,000 was raised for the Maimonides
Geriatric Centre Synagogue Fund thanks
to the generosity of the Assouline Family
and their friends.

Maimonides Geriatric Centre is a McGill University affiliated Centre
Le Centre gériatrique Maimonides est affilié à l’Université McGill
Plus de 150 invités, dignitaires, bénévoles et membres de l’équipe du Centre
gériatrique Maimonides se sont réunis le 7 février dernier dans la synagogue du
Centre à l'occasion d'une joyeuse célébration visant à accueillir le premier Sefer
Torah sépharade de Maimonides. Commandé en Israël, cette magnifique Torah a
été généreusement donnée par les membres de la famille Assouline en l'honneur
de leur mère, Mme Simy Assouline, résidente de Maimonides.
Selon le Talmud, on considère que quiconque obéit au
commandement enjoignant de participer à l'écriture d'un
rouleau de la Torah a reçu la Torah sur le mont Sinaï. Le rabbin
Michael Wolff a prononcé un vibrant D’var Torah et a cité le
Deutéronome : « Maintenant, écrivez ce chant pour vousmêmes et enseignez-le aux enfants d'Israël ». (Deut. 31:19)
Conformément à la tradition, la soirée a pris l'allure d'une
noce festive accompagnée de bonne chère, de musique, de
chansons et de danses. La Torah a été portée sous la chuppah
par quatre générations de la famille Assouline dans
une procession enjouée qui s’est déroulée dans les
corridors de Maimonides
et s’est achevée dans la
synagogue. Le rabbin
Shalom Chriqui a mis aux
enchères avec fougue les
dernières lettres, des
parties de la Torah et les
coutures, pendant que
le rabbin David Cohen
prêtait main-forte en
achevant la Torah.
La célébration a touché
le cœur de tous ceux qui
ont pris part à la mitzvah
consistant à achever ce
nouveau Sefer Torah, et une somme de 23 000 $ a été recueillie pour le fonds de la
synagogue du Centre gériatrique Maimonides. Un gros merci à la famille Assouline
et ses amis pour leur générosité.

Maimonides is working towards becoming the first long-term care centre in
Canada affiliated with Planetree, a non-profit organization at the forefront
of client-centered care.
“Client-centered care is about fostering a culture within Maimonides that
prioritizes our residents comfort, dignity, empowerment and well-being,
while providing top quality care,” says Executive Director Barbra Gold.
Planetree Continuing Care Director Heidi Gil has met with the
Maimonides community to explain how the Planetree approach to care fits
in with our five-year Strategic Plan with the ‘More than Care’ theme.
To receive the Planetree designation, Maimonides has to meet or exceed
stringent criteria developed by Planetree to distinguish those
health care facilities doing
the most advanced work in
client-centered care. The
Planetree model of care
emphasizes the relationships that sustain a healthy
and meaningful life. It
celebrates the uniqueness
of each individual and responds to the physical,
mental, emotional, and
spiritual needs of residents
and staff.
Maimonides is looking
forward to the journey
to become a Planetree
affiliate and enhancing our
residents’ experience.

durée canadien à être affilié à Planetree, un organisme à but non lucratif
qui est au premier rang en matière de soins axés sur les résidents.

l’habilitation et le bien-être des résidents, tout en favorisant des soins de la

Centre gériatrique Maimonides doit répondre
sinon dépasser des critères très rigoureux
établis par Planetree aspirant à reconnaître les
établissements de soins de santé qui se
démarquent par l’avant-gardisme de leur travail
en matière de soins axés sur les clients. Le
modèle de soins Planetree préconise les relations
qui favorisent une vie saine et pleine. Il donne du
relief à l’unicité de chaque individu et répond
aux besoins physiques, mentaux, émotionnels et
spirituels des résidents et du personnel.
Maimonides se réjouit à l’idée de devenir
affilié à Planetree et de rehausser l’expérience
résident.

bands raises a record

The 5th annual Maimonides Battle of the Bands was a
rock’n success generating $250,000 towards the Suite
Dreams Capital Renovation Campaign to refurbish all of
the residents’ rooms. Two sellout crowds packed
Metropolis on Wednesday, December 5th and Thursday,
December 6th to hear eight
amateur bands made up of
dentists, lawyers and other professionals belt it out to
raise funds for Maimonides Geriatric Centre. This year,
for the first time, Maimonides rolled out the red carpet
for its sponsors with a VIP cocktail reception before the
show featuring Ian Cooney and Sky Lounge. Andy
Nulman was an exceptional MC for both nights
opening the show performing with The Matt Demons.
“This is a gem of an event that just keeps
getting better and better,” says Rory Olson who
co-chaired this year’s Battle of the Bands along
with Gerry Kandestin and Terri Klein. This year’s sold
out event was such a huge success that people are already signing up to participate
in 2008.

La cinquième édition de l’événement Battle of the Bands du Centre
gériatrique Maimonides a connu un succès retentissant, amassant 250 000 $
au profit du projet de rénovation Suites royales visant à moderniser toutes
les chambres des résidents. Dans une salle comble au Metropolis les
deux soirs, le mercredi 5 décembre et le jeudi 6 décembre, la foule est
venue assister au spectacle de huit orchestres amateurs, formés de
dentistes, d’avocats et d’autres professionnels, dans le but de recueillir
des fonds pour le Centre gériatrique Maimonides. Cette année, pour la
première fois, Maimonides a déroulé le tapis rouge en l’honneur de ses
commanditaires, en organisant un cocktail pour ses invités de marque,
mettant en vedette Ian Cooney et Sky Lounge. Andy Nulman s’est
dépassé comme maître de cérémonie des deux soirs, en ouvrant le spectacle
avec The Matt Demons.
« C’était un bijou de soirée qui ne cesse de s’améliorer d’année en année »,

worked at the
Montreal General
Hospital

approximately 20
years and is taking
a leave of absence
from his position
as Director of Geriatric Psychiatry at the McGill
University Health Centre. He also served as the
Director of Geriatric Psychiatry for McGill
University.
“We are thrilled to have someone of his caliber
join our research group and take the helm of the
many new projects we plan to initiate in the
coming years,” says Dr. Brian Gore, Director of
Professional Services. “Dr Vida brings to
Maimonides a wealth of both clinical and
research experience in psychogeriatrics,” he adds.
It is hoped that Dr. Vida will start in his new
position this spring. He has met with members of
the research team at Maimonides and is looking
forward to the exciting challenges ahead. “I think
our main goal is to find ways to enhance the
quality of life of our residents through improved
quality of care.”
The Maimonides Foundation is pleased to be
funding Dr. Vida’s three year position. As part of
the Centre’s Strategic Plan, Maimonides hopes to
create a Centre for Long-term Care Studies that
will be the focus of innovative research. Our aim is
to inaugurate the Centre by the year 2012.

Strategic Planning
Committee recognized
Miriam Friedman received the Outstanding
Service Award in recognition of her
exceptional dedication to Maimonides.
Friedman has been involved with the Centre
since she was 12 years old and visited her aunt
at the Esplanade location. Her father became a
resident at Maimonides in the 1980’s and she
continued to be involved with the Centre.
Among her roles, Friedman started the Users
Committee, was President of the Auxiliary and
served as a member of the Centre Board.

and Don’ts that may help.

Linda August, Assistant to the Director of Nursing and Clinical
Services, gave a presentation entitled “Institutional Abuse: Moving
beyond the complaints process to a culture of respect” at the
Canadian conference on Elder law in Vancouver, BC. She also
submitted a brief on institutional abuse as part of the public
consultation on life conditions of the elderly conducted by the
provincial government.
Lisa Blobstein, Communications Officer and Karen Flam,
Foundation Director, were presenters in a webinar for the Association
of Jewish Aging Services (AJAS) entitled Beyond the Gala: Creative
Fundraising Ideas. They spoke about the Maimonides Battle of the
Bands.
Karen Flam, Foundation Director, was a guest speaker at the
Canadian Association of Independent Schools Advancement
Professionals Regional (Quebec and Ottawa area) which was held at
Trafalgar School for Girls.
Rena Halickman, Head of the Department of Volunteer Services,
accepted the position as Vice President, Board of Directors,
Association of Jewish Homes And Services to the Aging (AJHSA).
Stefania Iapaolo, Risk Manager, gave a presentation about our
award-winning restraint reduction program at the Canadian Health
Association Intramural Session – CQI and Risk Management which
was held in Ottawa.
Paula Levinson, Head Nurse, was a “judge” at RNA “olympics” in a
contest between RNA students from PAAC & Ecole Faubourg.
Levinson and Stefania Iapaolo, gave a poster presentation about our
nationally recognized Fall Prevention Program at the Canadian
Healthcare Safety Symposium.
Silvana Mauro, Professional Coordinator – Rehabilitation, was
recently asked to sit on a committee stemming from the ministry. The
objective is to develop a standardized protocol on restraint use to be
used in all centers in Quebec.
Ronna Miller, Professional Coordinator – Accredited Homes and
Intermediate Resources, was a guest lecturer at the Middle East
Program of the McGill school of social work.
Lucie Tremblay, Director of Nursing and Clinical Services, was a
panel expert at the National Seniors Council discussions on Elder
Abuse. Ms. Tremblay authored two chapters in the book “Soins
Infirmiers aux Aînés en perte d’autonomie, une approche adaptée au
CHSLD.” The book was the recipient of the Prix de la ministre de
l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport. Ms. Tremblay participated in Elder
Abuse Consultation Team Lectures and Case Discussions where the
question “Restraints, Protection or Illusion” was examined.
Dr. Avi Whiteman, was a presenter at the 2007 State-of-the-Art
Conference on Occupational Health for Health Care Workers which
was held in Vancouver, BC. Dr. Whiteman spoke about “Reducing
short-term disability stays by fast-tracking depressed employees to
psychiatric care.”

les personnes âgées en établissement et sur la façon de passer du
processus de plainte à une culture centrée sur le respect, lors de la
conférence sur la loi et les aînés qui a eu lieu à Vancouver, en C.-B. Elle
a aussi soumis un rapport sur les mauvais traitements en établissement
dans le cadre de consultations publiques sur les conditions de vie des
aînés menées par le gouvernement provincial.

The activity room on the 5th floor was recently completely renovated as part of
the Suite Dreams Capital Renovation Campaign. The living room area features
beautiful sofas, furniture and a flat-screen TV that is perfect when families
come for a visit. In another area, there is a complete working kitchen that will
also be used for residents to participate in cooking programs. The room feels
very much like a home. This is the first activity room to be renovated thanks
to a generous gift by Eileen and the late Louis Dubrovsky. The activity room on
the 4th floor is the next one to be renovated. If you would like to help fund
an activity room renovation, please call Karen Flam in the Foundation office at

On June 27, 2007, the Auxiliary was proud to honour Past President Hinda
Deckelbaum Adelstein at the Leanor and Alvin Segal Theatre’s presentation of
the Yiddish play “Those Were the Days”. Hinda holds the record for being
Auxiliary President and Co-President for five years, (2001-2006). Tributes to
Hinda were given by Auxiliary President Terri Klein, Centre Board President Len
Lewkowict and best friend of the honoree, Vivian Billick. We thank Hinda for
her dedication and devotion to Maimonides and its residents.

Morrie Marcovitch:
“I had to paint”
Morrie Marcovitch :
« J’ai besoin de peindre »
Morrie Marcovitch was a passionate man who loved to paint. A successful
businessman by day, Morrie would often paint late into the evening. As Morrie said
“I had to paint”…and that he did, completing almost 1000 works of art before his
death in 2006. Many of his
paintings now hang in the
homes of those he loved.
However, with such a huge
collection, Morrie’s family
had to store much of the
works in a warehouse,
before donating part of the
collection to the Art for
Healing Foundation. Now,
visitors to Maimonides can
enjoy 19 of his colourful
abstract oil paintings as part
of the latest Art for Healing
gallery on the 4th floor.
“My father never wanted
to sell his paintings. He felt
that no value could be put
on creativity,”says Tronny Sweibel, one of Morrie’s 3 daughters. “It would mean so
much to him to know that his paintings are at Maimonides and will be able to bring
joy to so many people,” she adds.
The Morrie Marcovitch gallery at Maimonides serves as a tribute to the legacy
of an incredible painter. The gallery was made possible by the generous
donation of the works of art by his family as part of an initiative of the Art For
Healing Foundation to bring healing through art.
Anyone wishing to make a contribution towards the beautification process of
Maimonides, whether it be artwork or a financial contribution to help defray the
costs of framing, please call Foundation Director Karen Flam at (514) 483-2121,

Morrie Marcovitch était un homme passionné qui adorait peindre. Homme d'affaires
prospère le jour, Morrie passait souvent ses soirées à peindre jusqu’à des heures
tardives. Comme il se plaisait à le dire : « J’ai besoin de peindre. » Et c’est exactement
ce qu’il a fait, réalisant près de 1 000 œuvres
avant de décéder en 2006. Beaucoup de ses
peintures ornent aujourd’hui les murs des
maisons des gens qu’il aimait. Toutefois, vu
la taille imposante de sa collection, la
famille de Morrie a dû conserver le gros de
ses œuvres dans un entrepôt avant d'en
donner une partie à la Fondation de l’art
pour la guérison. Les visiteurs de
Maimonides peuvent désormais admirer
19 de ses peintures abstraites colorées à
l’huile au quatrième étage de
l’établissement dans le cadre de la toute
dernière galerie de L’Art pour la guérison.
« Mon père n’a jamais voulu vendre ses
peintures; il jugeait qu’on ne pouvait
attribuer une valeur à la créativité », déclare
Tronny Sweibel, l’une des trois filles de Morrie. « Il serait tellement heureux de savoir
que ses peintures sont à Maimonides et qu'elles apportent du bonheur à autant de
personnes », ajoute-t-elle.
La galerie Morrie Marcovitch de Maimonides est le legs d'un peintre incroyable.
Cette galerie a pu être constituée grâce à la générosité de sa famille, qui a fait don de
certaines de ses peintures, fruit d’une initiative de la Fondation de l’art pour la
guérison, organisme favorisant la guérison à travers l’art.

The cookbook committee held a wine and cheese party which was graciously
hosted at the Westmount home of Vivian and Robin Billick. Over 60 guests
savoured different kinds of wine with Sommelier Nick Hamilton. Cheese
Specialist Gilles Jourdenais from La Fromagerie du Marché Atwater provided a
refined selection of gourmet cheeses to complement the wine choices. It was a
superb evening to launch the Foundation’s latest endeavor – a cookbook.
The cookbook committee is led by co-chairs, Robert Kertesz and Denise
Zunenshine who have embarked upon this exciting project to support the
Maimonides Suite Dreams Capital Renovation Campaign.
We are currently collecting recipes with memorable anecdotes for food that is
sophisticated, modern and is as easy and enjoyable to prepare as it is to eat. All
recipes must be kosher style or kosher style adaptable and will be tested before

The cookbook is scheduled to be released in 2010, to correspond with the
100th anniversary of Maimonides Geriatric Centre.
Le comité Livre de cuisine a organisé une dégustation de vin et de fromage qui
a eu lieu à la résidence de nos gracieux hôtes Vivian et Robin Billick de
Westmount. Plus de 60 invités ont savouré des vins divers en compagnie du
sommelier Nick Hamilton. Gilles Jourdenais, maître fromager de La
Fromagerie du marché Atwater a apporté une fine sélection de fromages
gastronomiques pour accompagner les vins. Ce fut une magnifique soirée pour
lancer la dernière initiative de la Fondation – un livre de cuisine.
Le comité Livre de cuisine est dirigé par Robert Kertesz et Denise
Zunenshine, co-présidents de cet intéressant projet destiné à appuyer la
campagne de rénovation Suites royales de Maimonides.
Nous sommes présentement en train de recueillir des recettes,
accompagnées d’anecdotes mémorables entourant des mets raffinés,
modernes et qui sont tout aussi agréables à préparer qu’à manger. Toutes les
recettes doivent être casher ou de style casher adaptables; elles feront l’objet
d’un test avant d’être sélectionnées pour la parution dans notre livre de
