Mer information står i intresseanmälan blanketten. Ni behöver i er ansökan rangordna vilka

Finland: Helsinki Metropolia University
Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences is one of the most international
universities of applied sciences in Finland. Welcome to Metropolia as an exchange student
or teacher!
Metropolia welcomes exchange students, teachers and staff from our partner universities all
over the world. In 2011, over 350 exchange students studied at Metropolia. Metropolia has
15 international degree programmes in which the language of instruction is English. In
addition, many degree programmes where the language of tuition is Finnish offer studies in
English for exchange students.
There is a genuinely international atmosphere at Metropolia thanks to the abundant teaching
in foreign languages, international degree students, foreign lecturers and exchange students.
In addition to the exchange students, 800 international degree students who represent more
than 90 different nationalities study at Metropolia every year.
Helsinki, along with the neighbouring cities of Vantaa, Espoo, and Kauniainen, constitutes what is
known as the capital region, or Helsinki Metropolitan Area, with over 1,000,000 inhabitants. As well
as being the political centre, it is the cultural, economic, and commercial centre of Finland. Helsinki
Metropolia University of Applied Sciences is located in the cities of Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa.
Helsinki was founded in 1550 by the Swedish king Gustavus I as a trading port. The sea has always
been a focal point of Helsinki’s life. In addition to the industrial traffic that makes use of Helsinki’s
harbours, it is possible to take pleasure cruises around the islands and to board some of the world’s
largest passenger liners, which make daily trips to Tallinn in Estonia and Stockholm in Sweden.
The city of Espoo, immediately to the west of Helsinki, covers a relatively large, mostly residential
area. Espoo is a young city that has mainly developed from the mid-20th century. Espoo has its own
‘Silicon Valley’, a large concentration of information technology. Nearly 500 international companies
are established in Otaniemi, Espoo, including the headquarters of Nokia.
Although some of the earliest settlements in Finland were located in Vantaa, as a city it is relatively
young. Vantaa has been built around the railway line from the late 19th century onwards. The
international Helsinki-Vantaa airport is also located in Vantaa.

Mönchengladbach has around 266 000 inhabitants, making it the largest town on the
left bank of the lower Rhine. It takes its name from the Benedictine Monks who
founded an Abbey on the Gladbach (a narrow brook) in around 974.
The Middle Ages saw linen weaving emerge in Mönchengladbach, later to be replaced
by cotton spinning in the 18th century. Further progress led to a flourishing textile and
garment trade with a whole range of guilds and trades forming as well. Today, industry
focuses on steel, mechanical and automotive engineering plus electrical and food
industries. Yet, the remaining textile manufacturers still enjoy an excellent international
reputation.
