Applying to UISS does not mean that you are simply signing up for an intensive course
in the classroom. You also get a chance to really live the Uppsala life and to really be
Swedish, if you are not some part Swedish already! In addition to what you learn in
the classroom, there are also class field trips, Friday excursions, classic social events
like the potluck and crayfish party, as well as Uppsala life itself. UISS is a comprehensive and well-developed program. I have a Finnish mother and Swedish father, and had
never taken a formal lesson in Swedish because I have only studied in the United
States, though I consider myself fluent. I chose Svenska för utlandssvenska ungdomar and Det moderna
svenska samhället as my courses, and I participated in Lapland trip.
Whether you start as a beginner in Swedish or you just wish to refine some grammatical nuances, UISS
offers a class for you. The classes and teachers were amazing, and the Lapland trip was simply an unforgettable and incredible experience. UISS is not just about learning the Swedish language. I became good
friends with students, UISS assistants, and teachers from all over Europe and the U.S. along with some
local Uppsala residents. In addition, the weekends present an opportunity to do some of your own traveling, whether it is within Sweden or around Europe. I highly recommend UISS, and will try to get back
to Uppsala soon. If I were to give any advice it would simply be this: do not hesitate to take advantage
of all the possibilities UISS offers! As Nike says, just do it

From the moment I arrived in Uppsala, Sweden, I knew it was going to be an amazing
experience, but I had no idea what I was in for! I was transported to a completely different world, where people enjoy nature and walking/biking everywhere, where education is no longer a matter of cramming information and regurgitating it for an exam, but
rather an enlightening, enriching educational experience between you and a fabulous
instructor whose sole purpose is to teach you Swedish and a classroom full of equally
eager international students who are all there for the exact same reason. This is the way
education should be! One caveat I must give you however is simply this— speak Swedish! Fill your iPod
with nothing but Swedish music. Experience everything wonderful that Sweden has to offer. Don’t pass
up any opportunities, because they are put in front of you for a reason! Tell the locals who you are and
why you are there and you will be greeted with fascination and curiosity. I came to the UISS wanting
nothing more than to improve my spoken Swedish. I left with not only that, but with friends and contacts from nearly every European country, memories so vivid and rich that they will stay with me until I
am old and grey, and more confidence in who I am and more sense of direction than I have ever had in
my entire life. Uppsala has changed me forever and I regret nothing but having to leave.

We are two sisters from Madrid, Spain. Our mother is Swedish and
that is why we wanted to improve our Swedish. We knew the experience would be nice, but we didn’t expect it to be so much fun! We
met people of all ages from all over the world, learned about new
cultures and we got especially involved in the Swedish one. We were
very surprised by their way of life, the nature was spectacular
and the people so nice, not at all as cold as they are thought be.
The course was really useful, we learned a lot of grammar and conversation skills, and we practiced with
the local people as well! Our teacher was very helpful and friendly and the rest of the staff was very nice
as well. To sum it up, we had one of the best summer experiences of our lives and we totally recommend
it!!

A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR
next to increasing their knowledge about
Swedish culture, history and society. The
intercultural aspect of the program,
where more than 40 countries are represented, is important, interesting as
well as a lot of fun. After 25 years with
this program, I am well aware how
important it is, to also see to it that
everyone has a good time, sees something of the country and has some time
to travel on their own or socialize in
their free time. Also, I find it very important to maintain the personal atmosphere that always has been the strength
of this program. We therefore do not
admit more than 120 students at the
same time.
Every year about 240 students and professionals from all over the world participate in the UISS to study Swedish and
to learn about the Swedish culture and
society. In addition to studying, students also enjoy living in Uppsala and
participating in Swedish student life.
Uppsala is a beautiful and lively city during the summer. Riding a bicycle is the
most popular way to get around town,
although it is also easy to go on foot. In
Uppsala each week, a number of events
are organized by cultural organizations,
as well as by pubs and cafes. The student
clubs (nations), offer good and affordable food and drink, and have dances
several times per week. The lake is close
by and one will often find our students
there on the weekends. Stockholm, with
all it has to offer, is only 45 minutes
away by train.
The UISS teaches all classes at
Vuxenskolan, a modern facility in the

years we also
need a change in the format. We now
offer 3x3 weeks and quite a few new and
exciting afternoon courses. There will
also be 3 or 4 festive events during the
summer. Please read this brochure very
carefully, as it will provide you with all
the information you’ll need to prepare
for your studies with the UISS in
Uppsala, Sweden.
The UISS is a non-profit organization,
which means that all the money that
comes in, goes towards the costs of the
program. If we have a financially good
year and we do have some money left at
the end of the summer, this goes into
our scholarship fund. The UISS is completely self-supportive and receives no
subsidies at all.
All teachers within the UISS are qualified
to teach at an academic level. The
teachers of Swedish have an academic
degree in teaching Swedish as a foreign
language. New teaching methods are
applied and this results in an active,
motivating and stimulating atmosphere
in our classes. Students and professionals often say: “if learning only would
have been this much fun in school!” Our
courses are intensive and are intended
for the serious and motivated student.
Our students will learn a lot of Swedish

center of Uppsala. The weekend trips to
Helsinki, Värmland and Lapland are
unforgettable experiences for those who
participate. Two highlights during the
summer are the potluck dinner and the
farewell banquet. Students bring to the
potluck dinner food that is typical for
their homelands, serving up tastes from
all corners of the globe.
Each three-week session ends with a
farewell dinner and dance, when students and teachers perform songs and
sketches. In 2013 the first and second
dinner will have a theme. July 4 will
have a sixties theme, as the program
started in 1963 and July 25 has a
Swedish theme, where people can dress
up as Swedish celebrities. On August 15
we will have a typical semi-formal threecourse dinner, the way it is done in
Sweden. Theme is “dress-up”!

Spending a summer together with people from 40 different countries, ages 18
- 65, with different backgrounds, is a
valuable and interesting experience, one
that you will not easily forget.
In short, I think the UISS has a lot to
offer and I can assure you that you will
have a great summer with us, as you
combine your studies with interesting
and fun experiences.
I personally very much enjoy working
with this program, as it gives me the
opportunity to meet so many people
from all corners of the world with one
thing in common: an interest in Sweden,
its language and culture.

The UISS is a non-profit foundation. The
UISS offers summer courses annually for
three, six or nine weeks. The UISS courses
are taught at the facilities of Vuxenskolan
in the center of Uppsala.
Founded in 1963, the school has received
students from all over the world. In 2012,
246 students from 39 countries participated.

Swedish is the prime language of instruction. After the first few days, most of the
information given will be in Swedish. On
excursions, one can choose between an
English or Swedish tour. Some afternoon
classes are taught in English.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Please read the following very carefully
before you fill out the application form.
1. Give very thorough consideration as to
your choice of classes. The UISS is able to
provide so rich a summer program only if
they receive firm choices of courses from
applicants.

7. The deadline for applications is May 1 for
courses starting June 16, May 15 for courses starting July 7 and June 1 for courses

8. Upon receipt of your application, we will
send you a letter of admission by e-mail.
Those who fulfill the requirements and who
have sent their applications in time are usually accepted to the program. Sometimes
courses fill up before the deadline, so please
apply as early as possible.

name and description in English are taught
in English and the courses with a Swedish

CLASSES, CREDITS, SCHOLARSHIPS, FURTHER STUDY
& EXCURSIONS
CLASSES are scheduled four days a week.
Some afternoon classes are taught in
English, participants should therefore
have a good working knowledge of that
language.
All lecturers are highly qualified teachers,
who are especially trained in teaching
Swedish as a foreign language and who
work at different universities during the
academic year. This guarantees the academic and educational standards of the
classes.

Criteria for selection: financial need,
academic or professional qualifications,
maturity, need for Swedish for study or
profession, depth of interest in Sweden,

CERTIFICATES AND CREDITS
The UISS will issue a certificate and offers
the possibility of earning transfer credit
to all who have satisfactorily completed a
course. Students will have to contact
their home university’s study abroad
office beforehand to gain approval of the
UISS courses.
Basically, four credits per 3 weeks can be
earned for Swedish language classes.
Three credits can be earned for afternoon
classes that are taught for 36 hours. An

On Fridays instructional trips are arranged
within the Uppsala - Stockholm area as

well as to Dalarna. You will visit the 300year old Vasa ship, the homes of Carl
Milles and Carl Larsson, the World
Heritage Museum of Falun Copper Mine,
Skokloster Castle, and Drottningholm,
Special study visits are arranged within
the different classes.

the untouched forest and “fjäll” of the
North. The fresh water in the streams is
very pure and we can drink this directly
from the streams. This day usually we will
see the large snowfields from last winter.
Day 4: We will hike over the fields, and
down through the thick forest back to the
Kvikkjokk delta. This trail is known for its
large variety in flora. At the end of the
afternoon a small boat that brings us to
Kvikjokk will pick us up.
Day 5: Visit to Jokkmokk and the museum about the Sámi. Travel back to
Uppsala.
SPARE TIME ACTIVITIES
In addition to the regular classes, guest
speakers are invited to talk about such
interesting topics as Swedish politics,
film and traditions. Swedish films are
scheduled in the evening. There are a
number of other activities you can enjoy
on your own, such as a number of sports.
You can ride a bike or bus to Lake
Mälaren, the fourth largest lake in
Europe. The long weekends give you plenty of time to travel on your own. If you
want to meet young Swedish people, you
can go to one of the several student clubs
in Uppsala.
TRAVEL INFORMATION
Group size between 8 -15 persons
Included: all meals from lunch day 2 to
breakfast day 5, guide, use of tents and
additional camping gear, and all transportation.
Not included: Sleeping bag and pad, hiking clothing (shoes, rain gear) strong,
real hiking backpack. If you cannot take
a sleeping bag and pad, you’ll be able to
rent these for 300 sek.
Please note: Your sleeping bag needs to
be warm enough for temperatures around
freezing point.
TRIP TO LAPLAND:
July 5 - July 9 Costs: 4 200 sek
This is a short backpacking trip, which
will take you through a very diverse and
beautiful part of Swedish Lapland, just
above the Arctic Circle. You will hike
through dense pine and spruce forests,
open birch forest between mountain cascades and over the famous Swedish
“fjall”. You will sleep in small tents.
Cooking will be done over an open fire….
Day 1 Travel to Jokkmokk
Day 2 Upon arrival in Kvikkjokk we will
distribute the equipment and gear.
Following a boat trip we will start hiking
towards Prinskullen and Vallevare. The
first few hours of the hike will be going
upwards and the path is somewhat steep,
but we will take it easy. On top of
Vallevare we will set up a base camp.
Day 3: We will continue with the climb
into the mountains towards Vallespiken.

in the outdoors, or build your own raft
and float down the river.
In order to reserve a place on this trip,
please mark on the application form your
choice of activity on Saturday, and pay
1000 SEK in advance to reserve your spot.
The number of participants is limited, and
reservations are taken on a first-comefirst serve basis.
The program is:
Friday: Transfer by bus to Värmland. The
afternoon will be spent hiking, canoeing
or swimming. Rafts will be build.

Saturday:
a. Vildmark Värmland for timber rafting or
b. Adventure experience around a canyon
with different activities (repelling,
zipline and birma bridge)
c. Hiking through nature with a guide.
Dinner will be at the campfire.
Sunday:
Breakfast in the morning, free activities.

TRIP TO FINLAND: July 18 - July 22
Costs: 2 700 sek (4 nights) including
busses, boat, cabin, hotel, breakfast and
2 dinners. This is an amazing trip, travelling by boat through the beautiful archipelago, while enjoying typical Swedish
food, listen or dance to music on board.
This trip is a very good deal, as we are
receiving a large discount.
We will take the night boat from
Stockholm to Helsinki. In Helsinki we
stay at a hotel with free time on Friday
and Saturday. You will be given information on what to see and do in Helsinki.
On Sunday evening we will return to
Stockholm and arrive in Stockholm early
Monday morning.

TRIP TO VÄRMLAND: August 9 - 11
Costs: 2 500 sek including full board,

DESCRIPTION OF COURSES
Uppsala International Summer Session has organized summer courses in Swedish
since 1963 for students, teachers, Swedish youth living abroad, translators, interpreters, administrative personnel etc. The most important course in the UISS is
Swedish as a foreign language, which is organized on six levels in accordance with
the levels in Common European Framework of Reference for languages, learning,
teaching and assessment. (CEF). The CEF has been initiated by the European Council
and has resulted in a European Language Portfolio. Please consult the Council of
Europe web site: http://www.coe.int/T/DG4/Portfolio/?L=E&M=/main_pages/levels.html for detailed information on levels A1 through C2, in the aspects of reading,
writing, listening comprehension, spoken interaction and spoken production.

Explanation of levels:
The content of CEF levels describes your
proficiency in the Swedish language
after completion of the level. For example: as a complete beginner you start in
level A1 and before going into level A2,
you must have attained the proficiency
as described under A1. If you already

described under B1 you register for B2
etc.

Svenska för utlandssvenska ungdomar
This course is especially designed for
expatriated young Swedes between 18
and 26. Students are only accepted into
this course if they demonstrate conversational skills at minimum level B1+,
and as such, the focus is on the continued development of written, oral and literary skills.

aspects of grammar are being dealt with,

ARTS IN SWEDEN
Aim and content of the course
This course deals with the history of art,
architecture and design in Sweden.
Spanning the best part of the last millennium, it provides a comprehensive overview of the art historical development of
the country from the Middle Ages to the
present. Through visits historically interesting sites and museums, the students get
the chance to see the result of Swedish
artistic production of different ages. These
visits are complemented by lectures and
seminars, accompanied by slides. Thus the
student will get a more theoretical view on
art, as well as preparation for, and analysis
of the various fieldtrips. Swedish art and
architecture are compared to international
equivalents. In addition, the curse aims to
link the development of Swedish art history to the development of society as a
whole. The idea is to see art and architecture as integrated in society and not as
anything isolated. History and society
serve as a backdrop to the artistic expressions of different eras. Hence, this course
asks the question “why?” as well as
“what?” and “when?”
The location of Uppsala is ideal. In and
around town are many historical sites from
different times and its closeness to
Stockholm provides the possibility to
numerous visits to the capital.
SWEDEN, From the Cradle to the Grave
A 21st century welfare state
The aims and objectives of this course are
to introduce students to Sweden, Swedes
and what it is like to be living in Sweden.
Theoretical perspectives are combined with
more hands on information, perhaps useful

for those who might be looking into the
possibility of an extended stay in the
country. You are expected to be able to
participate in an educated discussion
about, as well as living a comfortable life
in, Sweden, by the end of the course.
Examples of core topics in class are the
home of the people (folkhemmet), the welfare state (välfärdsstaten), gender equality
and drug/crime prevention policies. Hands
on information stretches from how to get a
social security number (personnummer) to
what is appropriate or not among Swedes.
These aims and objectives will be met
through classroom discussions, fieldtrips
(various institutions providing services
and/or entertainment) and guest lecturers.
All information is presented in English, at
the same time as names of institutions,
traditions and services are exclusively
referred to in Swedish.
DET MODERNA SVENSKA SAMHÄLLET

varandra, arbeta med sketcher och dramaövningar. Vi tränar på betoning, taltempo, frasering och den svenska språkmelodin. Du kommer att få många praktiska verktyg som hjälper dig att känna ett
utökat självförtroende i talsituationen. När
kursen är över har ditt ordförråd förbättrats markant och du kan oftare hitta synonymer, både när du talar och skriver.
Möjlighet till individuell coachning kommer att ges vid behov.

DET SKANDINAVISKA DECKARUNDRET
Av de tjugo mest sålda böckerna i Sverige
är idag hälften deckare skrivna av svenska
författare. Varför har denna genre blivit så
populär, vad i den svenska kulturen gör att
vi har ett så starkt sug efter spänning i
bokform? Svenska deckarförfattare gör inte
succé bara i Sverige utan också i utlandet,
”Det svenska deckarundret” uppmärksammades i en artikel i Financial Times 2011
och sedan dess har framgången bara växt.
Vad i svenska krimromaner gör dem så

SWEDISH POP MUSIC & MUSICAL
THEATER
To familiarize the student with Swedish
Pop Music and Musical Theater and through
singing and acting improve the speaking
and intonation of spoken Swedish. To
encourage the student to speak and sing in
Swedish in front of a small audience, mostly in an ensemble. Some singing and acting techniques will be part of the course.
Questions that we will try to answer are:
Where do the songs come from? What do
the lyrics mean? How to connect to the
lyrics and the music? How to pronounce
the lyrics correctly?
We will look at songs from among others:
ABBA (Chess, Kristina från Duvemåla,
Mamma Mia!), Cornelis Vreeswijk, Ace of
Base, Robyn, Lisa Ekdahl, The Cardigans,
Roxette, Europe. Besides the background
information, you will be learning how to
connect to the Swedish language, by
singing and acting... exploring in a different way. This course is for everyone who
likes to sing, likes to act, or just likes to
do something completely new and different... No experience in singing or acting
required.
HISTORY OF SWEDEN,
from past to present
A course designed to introduce international students to how history was, and is,
presented in Sweden, a Swedish history
from a Swedish perspective. Classes will
provide structure as well as facts, and general historical narratives. The constitution
and development of Swedish identity, self
perception, are topics incorporated into
lectures and discussions. The method and
purpose of the class is to “remember by
understanding”. Students are exposed to a
series of summaries, rather than chronologically organized data. Lectures alternate
with fieldtrips, with a focus on the immediate Uppsala area. The time span covered
during the four weeks of classes stretches
from the end of the Scandinavian Ice Age

(12 – 10 000 BC) to the development of
the “Folkhem”, the foundation for the
Swedish Welfare State. Nordic Mythology,
the Development of Pre-historic research,
Sweden’s years as a great power and the
Post-War era, are among the historic segments and phenomena’s which are highlighted during the four weeks of lectures.
Reading material is provided in class.
Instruction
Lectures. Fieldtrips to, among others,
Linné’s Hammarby, Viking sites, Skokloster
Castle.
NOTE: This exact same course will also be
taught in Swedish from July 28.
CORNELIS VREESWIJK,
ett liv i sånger och texter
Sångaren/musikern/kompositören/poeten
Cornelis Vreeswijk (1937 - 1987) är en
legend i Sverige. Han föddes i
Nederländerna och flyttade med sin familj
till Sverige när han var 13 år gammal. Han
blev en av de mest inflytelserika konstnärerna av 1900-talet. Han kom ut med mer
än 30 album och var känd för hans unika
röst, hans starka texter och hans turbulenta liv. Nu, 26 år efter hans död, är han fortfarande så välkänd att de flesta svenskar
fortfarande kan sjunga en eller fler av hans
sånger.
Cornelis turbulenta liv, hans texter och
musik står centralt, men vi kommer också
att sjunga hans sånger tillsammans. Från
blues till samba och jazz till “visan”
(Svensk chanson). Cornelis Vreeswijks
sånger är otroligt mångsidiga och roliga
att sjunga, både för själva musikens skull
men säkert också för hans vackra, fräcka
och engagerade texter. Vi arbetar med
hjälp av hans låtar också på röstteknik och
tolkning av texter, så att du inte bara förbättrar din svenska, men också lär dig hur
du kan utveckla din sångröst och hur du
kan tolka och presentera en sång på ditt
unika sätt.

THE SWEDISH FILM
Aim of the course
The course will provide concise and informative insights into Swedish film.
Essential stylistic and dramatic elements
such as plot, use of camera, editing, sound
and symbolism will be explored as we view
several distinguished films during the
course. We will look at the work of Ingmar
Bergman –who was born in Uppsala! We
will also study the work of new directors
such as Lasse Hallström, Colin Nutley,
Lukas Moodysson and Josef Fares.
Examples of national production and popular film genres specific to Sweden will be
studied as well as documentaries. The
social and historical contexts to these
films will be presented so the course can
be considered an historical overview of
Sweden through moving images.

Lectures and discussions on Swedish film
style, genres, themes and the social and
historical contexts of Swedish filmmaking.
We will visit an historic cinema from the
early 20th century in Uppsala and watch
some vintage films. We will also visit the
headquarters of the Uppsala International
Film Festival, the only film festival in
Sweden where the winning film of the
yearly competition can be nominated for
an Academy Award.

Kursen ger en överblick över det sociala
välfärdssystemet samt en god inblick i
centrala sociala frågor och begrepp. Översikten börjar med den rådande ekonomiska
och politiska situationen i det svenska
samhället. Tonvikten kommer att ligga på
den svenska välfärdsstaten, “folkhemmet”,
som förser svenskarna bl a med barnomsorg, skolor, omsorg om människor med

Airport, about halfway between Stockholm
and Uppsala. From the airport take the
ARLANDA-UPPSALA bus or the train to

Every hour a train leaves from Stockholm
to Uppsala. Upon arrival at the station in
Uppsala, take a short walk to the school
located at Kungsängsgatan 12, first floor.
Upon arrival you will have to pay 1000 SEK
as a room deposit before you get your key.
After some information and paper work, a
member of the Summer Session staff will
take you to your room.

ACCOMMODATION
In Uppsala, many single rooms and apartments will be in the dormitories at
Studentvägen. Apartments may also be
elsewhere. Please indicate the lodging of
your choice on your application form.

ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES
Sweden uses 220-volt current.
Single student room: mostly with a private toilet, one of several on a hall. You
will share a kitchen and showers with the
other students on the corridor. Swedish
students may be occupying their rooms
during the summer, which will give you an
excellent opportunity to practice your
Swedish. All accommodations are furnished and have kitchen facilities for use.
Doublet: a unit consisting of two separate
single rooms, with shower, toilet and
kitchenette. This is not a shared, double
room! Extra charge: 400 sek per person.
Apartment: one-, two- or three rooms,
fully furnished with private kitchen and
bathroom, available for individuals and
couples. The extra cost of an apartment for
single occupancy or when only one of two
persons is attending the program will be
3600 SEK per four weeks. Families with a
maximum of two children pay 4200 sek per
3 weeks. You can also share an apartment
with another participant at the UISS at the
extra cost of 1800 SEK per person. The
program furnishes blankets and pillows,
please bring sheets and towels.
Although the dormitories have a good
standard, please realize you will stay in
student rooms. It will not be possible to
stay in the rooms after the program has
ended.

TRANSPORTATION TO SWEDEN
We strongly advise participants who plan
to fly to request information from a travel
agency early. Reservations often need to
be made well in advance. An international
student identification card may prove to be
useful.
MEALS
During the week (Monday-Thursday) a hot
lunch will be served. Friday through
Sunday you will be responsible for your
own meals.
TRANSPORTATION IN UPPSALA
Bicycles are definitely the way to go for a
student in Uppsala. You should bring a
bike, or buy a cheap bike, as bikes are not
for rent in Uppsala anymore. You can also
take advantage of the excellent bus system
in Uppsala. The bus fare is 30 SEK per ride,
but much cheaper if you buy a card with
multiple rides. To walk from the dormitories to classes and to downtown Uppsala
will take approximately 15 - 20 minutes.
MONEY
Take a credit card or ATM bank card. It is
wise to exchange money at Forex. Money
can be changed at the airport and at the
central station in Stockholm upon arrival
in Sweden.
PASSPORT INFORMATION
At the present time no visa for Sweden is
necessary for citizens from most western
countries. A valid passport is, of course,
necessary. Passport and/or visa information may be obtained at embassies.
Students who need a visa should apply for
one well in advance. Please note that in
some cases visas are not issued for summer
courses only. The application procedure
may take up to six months. Those planning
to go on the Finland trip should check visa

UPPSALA STUDENT CARD
Student life in Sweden is quite differently
organized than in other countries. To gain
entrance to the student clubs, which offer
food and drinks at very reasonable prices
as well as an opportunity to meet Swedish
students, you’ll need a special ‘guest card’
from the student union. Please bring an
ISC, or your university student card.
WEATHER
During the summer the weather is unpredictable. It can be hot and dry, or cold and
rainy. Be prepared for anything.
ROOM DEPOSIT
1 000 SEK will have to be paid when you
check in. This sum will be refunded if your
room is left in good condition.
TELEPHONE
There are no telephones in the dormitories.
It is wise to get a calling card from your
telephone company; this makes calling

My father is Swedish, my mother is American and I was born and raised in The
Netherlands, speaking English. As a result, learning and working on my Swedish has
always been very important to me and thus I signed up for UISS. I was at UISS for two
weeks but it took only two minutes upon my arrival for me to realize that two weeks
was far too short a time. Within those first minutes, I had already met someone who
was to become a good friend for the rest of my time there. This program is a place
where people with different backgrounds, stories, ages, occupations and languages
come together in one of their favorite countries for one shared interest. We work and
play together, if you can call studying Swedish work, and everybody will walk away with meaningful
friendships. Besides fellow students, the teachers are excellent, activities eye-opening and the location
ideal. By the time I had figured all this out, it was too late for me to stay longer at Uppsala this summer because I had a summer job to get back to. I am planning to return next year. I found that the experience solidified my identity as a half-Swede in the presence of many other part-Swedes. And finally, I
feel much more excited and better equipped to live, work and play in Sweden one day.

I am very glad I decided to attend the UISS program. It has been a great experience
and the 4-week program has gone by very quickly. The days have been filled with great
teaching and there is always something to do at night or on the weekends. Learning
Swedish in Sweden instead of my home country has been great as it allows me to practice what I learn and be surrounded by the language daily. I certainly feel like this has
been money well spent and the course offers great value for money. If I can find the
time in the future, I certainly would like to return for higher level courses.

UISS har varit en helt otrolig upplevelse! Det är ett program som inte liknar något
annat. Om ditt mål är att förbättra din svenska och att ha kul då är UISS rätt för dig.
Från de första dagarna när man känner sig lite hemsjuk så är hela atmosferen så skön
och trygg i både klassen och hela skolan att de känslonar går bort så fort som man blir
kompisar med de flesta i klassen om inte med alla!!! Jag själv är halvsvensk eftersom
min pappa kommer från Sverige och min mamma är grek-cypriot. Eftersom en av mina
föräldrar var svensk, tillhörde jag klassen med svenska för utlandsvenska ungdomar!
Alla i min klass var antingen helsvenska eller halv som jag och det gjorde att alla var
nästan på samma nivå. UISS är ett helt underbart program som utvecklar ens kunskap
inte bara i svenska, men också i svensk kultur och svenska traditioner. Jag har fått nya vänskap som kommer att bestå i åren som kommer.

Tack vare UISS har jag fått möjligheten att gå vidare i min svenska. I Spanien har det hittills bara funnits svenskundervisning upp till A2-nivå. Eftersom jag går på två utbildningar samtidigt i Barcelona, är
min enda möjlighet att förbättra min svenska att ta sommarkurser hos UISS. Och då får
jag precis vad jag behöver. Kurserna är mycket intensiva, så jag kan lära mig så mycket som möjligt på väldigt kort tid. Lärarna är duktiga och de uppfyller mina krav. Detta
är mycket viktigt därför att mitt mål är att specialisera mig på Skandinavien och skandinaviska språk, med fokus på svenska och Sverige både ur ett språkligt och ett historiskt perspektiv. Jag har deltagit på UISS sommarkurser två somrar i sträck (B1+ och
B2 nivåer) och jag kan utan tvekan påstå att jag har gjort stora framsteg. Mina
svensklärare på UISS har hjälpt mig otroligt mycket till en väsentlig utveckling och
samtidigt har de blivit goda vänner. Stödet från UISS och deras tro på min förmåga har
varit minst lika viktiga för min framtid i yrkeslivet som själva språkundervisningen. Utan UISS kunde jag
inte alls gått vidare i svenska, något som skulle ha hindrat mig från att bli den specialist jag planerar
att bli. Till slut måste jag säga att jag har fått många goda vänner som jag ser fram emot att träffa igen.
UISS erbjuder intensiva och krävande kurser, men det är också ett ställe där man har roligt. Ett stort tack
till alla som gör det här möjligt! Kom till UISS, det är både bra för hjärnan och humorn!

Vet ni hur det känns när man vill skriva om en upplevelse som har varit så bra att den
egentligen inte går att beskriva? Man känner en viss känsla av frustration för att till
och med de finaste orden inte är tillräckligt fina för att återge den upplevelsen.
Samtidigt blir jag lite rädd för att jag inte kommer att ha tillräckligt många rader för
att berätta allt. För ärligt talat, hur kan jag sammanfatta de fyra bästa veckorna av
mitt 25-åriga liv i bara några meningar? Hur kan jag börja beskriva hur mycket svenska jag har lärt mig genom fina lektioner med underbara lärare, hur roligt vi har haft
under kvällsaktiviteterna, hur lätt det var för en blyg tjej som jag att prata med så många fina öppna
människor från hela världen som tycker lika mycket om Sverige? Hur kan jag förklara för er vad vissa av
dessa människor betyder för mig? Jag försöker använda mina kunskaper i svenska och jag vill hitta alla
ord som behövs för att beskriva allt det där. Men det går inte. Det är obeskrivligt. Ni som verkligen vill
veta, sitt inte bara och läs om våra upplevelser, utan kom till Uppsala Int’l Summer Session och upplev.
Och sedan får ni försöka beskriva. Men jag lovar, ord räcker inte. I stället för ord som rinner ur pennan
är det bara tårar som rinner när man åker hem...

Jag har jobbat som tolk i 10 år nu, så jag sysslar med språk yrkesmässigt. Jag har gjort
flera kurser i Sverige och jag letar alltid efter en organisation som erbjuder en bra
balans mellan formell undervisning och avslappning. UISS erbjuder precis det jag
sökte: en hög nivå, utmärkta lärare, mycket variation, filmkväller, intressanta utflykter
och allt var väldigt bra organiserad. Du kan välja hur du vill bo (studenthem, egen
lägenhet). Alla är hjälp-samma och Nellekes fyra (sic!) assistenter är supereffektiva. Om
du vill upptäcka naturens skönhet i Sverige, så ska du absolut åka till Värmland: där
upplever du hur vacker och spännande livet på landet kan vara. Glöm inte heller att
besöka Uppsalas “nationer”. För mig framkallade det minnen från mitt studentliv i min hemstad
Antwerpen. Så om du vill känna dig student igen eller bara snacka lite med andra UISS studenter (eller
svenskar som pluggar i Uppsala) så får du säkert besöka nationerna. Jag deltog i 6 veckor och jag trivdes verkligen mycket bra; jag har inte haft det tråkigt alls. UISS lockar en bra blandning av alla sorters
människor, alla åldrar och bakgrunder. Så om du tror att du inte passar in i UISS: fel! Sommarskolan har
något för alla, så tveka inte!

We first came to Uppsala in 2006, unsure of what to expect from
our first classroom experience in about 20 years! Then we were
concerned that it wasn’t much of a holiday from work. We need
not have worried. UISS is for adults, with plenty of encouragement.
Classes are varied, with different approaches used to lighten the
learning. The teachers all appreciate that you are spending your
own money and using your annual leave to come to Uppsala, and the plus side for them is that the students are highly motivated. In terms of relaxing, the course gives you an opportunity to really switch
off from your job – there just isn’t time to worry about it. The format of UISS allows you to develop a
different approach to learning Swedish or about Sweden, during the afternoon courses. These are often
quite unusual, such as musical, film or literary forays into the culture and the use of the language. Like
the morning classes, the approach is quite intensive with the aim of immersing students in all things
Swedish while they are in Uppsala. Equally, optional evening and weekend events are designed to make
students feel as Nordic as Moose! If you want to learn Swedish in an integrated, immersive way and enjoy
being in Sweden, then UISS comes highly recommended. One word of warning – you may not be going
on a different summer holiday again for some time!
