Despite the series of incidents last year, which had negative impact on travel and tourism, the increase of promotion of Malaysia ensured the continued growth of the country’s tourist arrivals and receipts. Tourist arrivals to Malaysia for 2014 continued to soar, registering a hike of 6.7%. The country received 27.4 million (27,437,315) tourists from January to December compared to 25.7 million (25,715,460) tourists in 2013. Tourist Arrivals Tourist Receipts (RM) 2014 2013 27,437,315 25,715,460 72.0bil 65.4bil Correspondingly, tourist receipts rose by 10.0%, contributing RM72 billion to the country’s revenue against RM65.4 billion in 2013. also contributed to the growth of tourist arrivals from these markets. The medium-haul markets contributed 18.7% or 5.1 million tourists to Malaysia’s total arrivals. Markets that registered double-digit growth include South Korea (+40.5%), Oman (+29.8), Saudi Arabia (+19.9) and India (+18.3%). Australia, Japan, and New Zealand rose by 8.5%, 7.8%, and 6.8% respectively. China and Taiwan registered a decline of 9.9% and 4.1% respectively in tourist arrivals for 2014 due to the impact of the MH370 aviation incident. Nevertheless, despite a decline, China is still the largest contributor to Malaysia from the medium-haul markets, with 1,613,355 arrivals. Tourist arrivals from the long-haul markets reached 1.9 million in 2014, constituting 7% of the total arrivals to Malaysia. Vietnam registered the highest growth of 21.2%, followed by Cambodia (+14.2%), Thailand (+12.4%), Indonesia (+11.0%), the Philippines (+11.0%), Singapore (+5.7%) and Myanmar (+5.1%). Participation in various tourism events in ASEAN countries, such as Vietnam International Travel 2014 and Thailand Travel Mart Plus 2014, contributed to the increase of tourists arrivals from ASEAN. Apart from this, better connectivity and increased of flight frequencies among ASEAN countries Better accessibility, promotions offered by airlines the wide coverage on Visit Malaysia Year 2014 contributed to the increase of tourist arrivals from these markets. Besides that, collaborations with airlines to organise familiarisation trips, effective advertising and promotional campaigns, and trade seminars, also contributed to the increase of tourist arrivals from the long-haul markets in 2014. Editorial Unit, Tourism Malaysia Buletin 1MOTAC | 3 HIGHLIGHTS MALAYSIA YEAR OF FESTIVALS 2015 (MyFEST 2015) The year 2015 will be known as the Malaysia Year of Festivals (MyFEST) 2015. The MyFEST 2015 campaign will continue to boost the tourism sector and ensure that the Malaysian tourism industry remains robust after the Visit Malaysia Year 2014 campaign. Set to make Malaysia the top-of-the-mind tourist destination, MyFEST 2015 aims to encourage tourists to stay longer in order to enjoy the festival offerings nationwide. Themed "Endless Celebrations", the yearlong calender is packed with festivities of every genre; for instance cultural festivals, shopping extravanganzas, international acclaimed events, eco-tourism events, arts, music showcases, food promotion and other themed events. Logo Rationale The design for Malaysia Year of Festivals 2015 logo depicts a traditional musical instrument known as the Rebana Ubi. The drum is a musical instrument which can be associated with Malaysia's multicultural society, in line with the spirit of 1Malaysia. Therefore, the logo design reflects an important part of the country's heritage, traditions and culture. A National Mission The Malaysia Year of Festivals 2015 campaign leverages on smart partnerships in line with the National Blue Ocean Strategy that nurtures stakeholder engagements, support and participations. The symbiosis enables Malaysia's tourism efforts to be competitive and to remain one of the prime contributors to the socioeconomic development of the nation. Stakeholders and industry players should be united and Malaysians should come forward in the spirit of unity during Malaysia Year of Festivals 2015. As Malaysia Year of Festivals 2015 is a national mission, it is envisaged that government agencies, the private sector, non-government agencies and industry players will come together and make the national campaign a success. 4 | Ministry Of Tourism And Culture, Malaysia Mascot The Proboscis Monkey, official mascot of Malaysia Year of Festivals 2015, or MyFEST 2015, now has a name! Aptly called “Bayau”, the name is inspired from the local nickname for this highly distinctive species of monkey which is predominantly found in one of the world’s oldest rainforests in East Malaysia’s Sabah and Sarawak. Bayau is also another word for “friends”, often used by the ethnic “Bajau” community in Sabah. Bayau, the Proboscis Monkey mascot for MyFEST 2015 mascot is a fitting tribute to our celebrative mood as we welcome our guests from around the world! What better way to be a perfect host than to show what Mother Nature has to offer! As Malaysia prepares for the hosting of its grandest tourism celebration - MyFEST 2015, the country’s commitment to the protection of its ecological treasures and in particular, the conservation of its many indigenous animals provide a platform of opportunity to share with the world its many fascinating creatures that are so often hidden from the general public. Given also Malaysia’s regional prominence as the guardian of some of Asia’s rarest and most endangered species, the selection of such an animal mascot to symbolically represent the MyFEST 2015 campaign weighs of utmost importance. For this, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Malaysia has decided upon one of the most endangered of animals listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s Red List of Threatened Species - the Proboscis Monkey as the official mascot for MyFEST 2015. About Proboscis Monkey A native to the heartland of Borneo (East Malaysia), this very distinctive species of mammal has some of the most unique qualities that set its biological and physical features apart from other primates. Proboscis monkeys prefer to live in the mixed diterocarpkerangas forests, mangrove forests and lowland forests near fresh water and rivers. The population of proboscis monkeys is estimated to be 6,000 and most of them are concentrated in Kinabatangan, Sukau, Sandakan, Klias and other parts of Sabah. MyFEST 2015 is a perfect time to get up close with proboscis monkeys at the national parks and wildlife sanctuaries such as Bako National Park, Klias National Park, Kulamba Wildlife Reserve, Sungai Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary and Lubuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. These places offer nature lovers the most memorable experience of observing the proboscis monkeys. Believe it or not, the graceful leaping of both young and adult monkeys from tree to tree to feed on young leaves, fruits and plants can easily qualify as a perfect ‘10’ if it were an Olympic gymnastic routine! You can also catch them flip and swim, or communicate in a bizarre range of vocal noises, from roars, grunts, squeals to a long nasal honk as a warning sign of predators nearby. Buletin 1MOTAC | 5 HAPPENINGS NATIONAL LEVEL CHINESE NEW YEAR OPEN HOUSE 2015 The night air was electric at the Leaning Tower in Teluk Intan, Perak as people from near and far gathered at the famed historical site for the vibrant national Chinese New Year open house on 28 February 2015. Held in conjunction with the Malaysia Year of Festivals 2015, performing troupes from various races donned stunning, elaborate costumes to put on a show and herald the new beginning in the Chinese calendar. The sound of a grand drum performance reverberated throughout to welcome the guests of honour Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and his wife Puan Sri Hajah Noorainee Abdul Rahman, accompanied by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and Teluk Intan MP Datuk Mah Siew Keong. A special “Welcome to Malaysia” dance was performed by a group clad in various traditional outfits representing the many ethnic communities as part of the event’s line-up. The Leaning Tower was chosen for this year’s celebration to coincide with the declaration of the tower as a national heritage site, which was announced by Muhyiddin that night. The historical building was also being submitted for consideration as a Unesco World Heritage Site. The event continued with the signing of the commemorative plaque of the tower and a grand yee sang tossing session in three “golden imperial boats” by the guests of honour and other dignitaries. The programme for the night also saw an impressive lineup of Chinese New Year-themed performances, including a lion dance, dragon dance, drums presentation and tai chi demonstration. A variety of sumptuous Malaysian delicacies such as mee rebus, nasi ayam panggang,mee jawa and char kway teow as well as mandarin Wood relates to trees which relate to the green color. This Wooden Goat Year is also known as the Year of the Green Sheep or Goat. So, what is the relationship between wood and goat that bring together? The personality of the goat is kind, tender and sympathetic. Goats also are elegant and creative too. Because of it, these goats are symbolic of peace and harmony. Leaning Tower (Menara Condong) Teluk Intan According to history, the name of Teluk Intan or Teluk Mak Intan, originally come from a name of beautiful and pretty widow which is as a trader. She comes from Mandahiling, Sumatera, Indonesia. She has opened a Teluk Intan in the early 19th century known as the town of Pekan Mak Intan. The name was changed to Teluk Anson, a named of General Archibald Anson after British arrival. On 1st January 1982, the name of the town was officially changed to Teluk Intan. This town was located at south Perak as a administrative centre. The Leaning Tower was built in 1885 by a contractor named Leong Choon Chong. The concept of the building originally housed the water tank which is supply water throughout the town area and also as a reserve during drought and fire. The building was inspired by pagoda design in China. The pagoda style design was greatly influenced by Chinese architecture. This is because of the majority of the population at that time was Chinese. The water tank which measured by 5 meters high and 18.36 cubic meters deep is on the third floor only. It also was made by steel. The Leaning Tower was used to serve as a beacon to guide shot into Teluk Anson Port. This building was started tilt due to two massive floods in 1889 and 1895. This happen because the structure of the building was soft and the weight of the water tank. This pagoda design was being compared with the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. Wooden Goat Year There are twelve animals in the Chinese Zodiac. Each of them has unique characteristics and also each year corresponds to one animal. This year, 2015 corresponds to the Wooden Goat Year. 6 | Ministry Of Tourism And Culture, Malaysia KARNIVAL PELANCONGAN DAN KEBUDAYAAN LIMA 2015 Fokus seni warisan Malaysia Kekayaan seni warisan tempatan menjadi titik fokus bagi penganjuran Karnival Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan LIMA 2015 yang berlangsung selama 3 hari dari 17 hingga 19 Mac 2015, di Langkawi, Kedah. Karnival ini dianjurkan oleh Kementerian Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan Malaysia dengan kerjasama Lembaga Pembangunan Langkawi, Kedah. Acara dwitahunan yang masuk tahun ke-4 penganjurannya, menyajikan 40 aktiviti menarik yang terdiri daripada demonstrasi dan jualan produk kraftangan, persembahan tarian kebudayaan tradisional, pameran dan jualan lukisan dan seni visual, pameran koleksi artifak yang berusia ratusan tahun, produk Homestay Langkawi serta makanan warisan seluruh Malaysia, terutama dari negeri Kedah. Acara tersebut dirasmikan oleh Menteri Besar Kedah, YAB Dato' Seri Hj. Mukhriz Tun Mahathir dan turut dihadiri oleh Menteri Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan Malaysia, YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Tan Sri Abdul Aziz selaku tuan rumah acara tersebut. Dalam ucapannya, YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri berkata penganjuran Karnival Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan LIMA 2015 menjadi platform untuk melonjak nama negara sebagai destinasi pelancongan terbaik serta memperkenalkan seni warisan tempatan kepada pelancong asing yang mengunjungi Langkawi. “Kerjasama strategik dengan kerajaan negeri seperti Kedah juga merupakan petunjuk positif bahawa industri pelancongan dan kebudayaan mendapat sokongan pelbagai pihak dan mampu untuk terus diperkembang bagi mencapai potensi tertingginya,” tambah beliau. Pada majlis sama, Menteri Besar Kedah turut melancarkan kempen Discover Kedah 2016 yang dijangka akan mengangkat nama Kedah sebagai satu destinasi pelancongan yang mempunyai kedua-dua tarikan sejarah dan kontemporari. “Melalui Kempen Discover Kedah 2016 ini, kerajaan negeri akan menjenamakan Kedah melalui kisah sejarah, lokasilokasi pelancongan yang menarik dan unik serta acara-acara yang menggambarkan imej Kedah sebagai titik permulaan sejarah Negara ini. Kita ingin tunjukkan bahawa identiti pelancongan negeri ini iaitu Kedah, Malaysia: Where It All Began adalah seiring dengan perancangan pemasaran yang telah kita rangka,” kata YAB Dato' Seri Paduka Mukhriz Tun Mahathir dalam ucapan perasmian beliau. Kedah, yang merupakan salah satu tamadun tertua di dunia dan juga antara negeri yang mengamalkan sistem monarki paling lama bukan sahaja di Malaysia bahkan di peringkat global, masih mempunyai banyak tarikan yang tersembunyi yang belum diketahui ramai. Karnival Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan LIMA merupakan kaedah serampang dua mata bagi Kementerian Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan Malaysia menunjukkan sokongan, bukan sahaja kepada kerajaan negeri dan penganjuran Pameran LIMA, bahkan juga kepada sektor ekonomi Langkawi khususnya untuk menyumbang kepada peningkatan taraf hidup rakyat tempatan. Buletin 1MOTAC | 7 ASEAN THE 13th ASEAN SOCIO-CULTURAL COMMUNITY (ASCC) COUNCIL MEETING ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Ministers convened in Melaka from 23 until 27 March 2015 for the 13th ASCC Council Meeting to deliberate on realizing an ASEAN Community that is people-centred and socially responsible by forging a common identity and building a caring and sharing society. “In this respect I believe that today’s meeting will further enhance our understanding as communicators, coordinators and socio-cultural aspirators. This also shows our affirmation to see the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community that is truly “People-Centered” and socially responsible with a view to achieving enduring solidarity and unity among the nations of ASEAN,” said YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Tan Sri Abdul Aziz, Minister of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, during his speech at the Opening Ceremony of the ASCC Council Meeting on 26 March 2015. The meeting was launched by the Governer of the State of Melaka, His Excellency Tun Datuk Seri Utama Mohd Khalil bin Yaakob. Also present was the Chief Minister of Melaka, Datuk Seri Ir. Hj. Idris bin Hj. Haron. The ASCC Meeting saw ASEAN Socio-Cultural Ministers deliberate and exchange their views on issues that are in relation to the emerging socio-cultural trends, current challenges as well as the way to move forward to the realisation of the ASEAN Community by 2015 year end. These would cover the key areas of human development, social welfare and protection, social justice and rights, environmental sustainability, building an ASEAN identity and narrowing the development gap. Malaysia was preceded by the 2nd HLTF-ASCC WG and the 18th SOCA meetings which were chaired by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Datuk Dr. Ong Hong Peng, as the SOCA Leader of Malaysia. ASCC Council Ministers and SOCA Leaders from all 10 ASEAN Member States including His Excellency Le Luong Minh, the Secretary General of ASEAN as well as rleevant officials of the ASEAN Secretariat attended both meetings. The SOCA is a regular preparatory working committee of Senior Officials to deliberate on the proposed priority areas before determining ASCC’s deliverable(s) for every year, while the HLTF-ASCC WG is a special committee to oversee the follow-ups of the Nay Pyi Taw Declaration on the ASEAN Community’s Post-2015 Vision, particularly on matters regarding ASCC. Among the key issues discussed during the meetings included the proposed outcome document or deliverables of the ASCC for the year 2015 and the progress report of the implementation of the ASCC Blueprint’s action lines, Among the proposed deliverables are the ASEAN Festival for Cultural Expressions, empowering the elderly, the social welfare and development, climate change, priorities on civil service matters and sports. The ASCC pillar coordinates 19 sectoral bodies which oversee the key areas of human development, social welfare and protection, social justice and rights, environment sustainaibility, building an ASEAN identity and narrowing the development gap. The 13th ASCC Council Meeting, chaired by YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, Minister of Tourism and Culture 8 | Ministry Of Tourism And Culture, Malaysia Malaysia had assumed the ASEAN Chairmanship on January 1, taking over from Myanmar and its theme for the chairmanship is “Our People, Our Community, Our Vision. JOINT MINISTERIAL STATEMENT OF THE 13TH ASEAN SOCIOCULTURAL COMMUNITY (ASCC) COUNCIL 26 MARCH 2015 MELAKA, MALAYSIA 1. We, the Ministers of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Viet Nam met on 26 March 2015 at Melaka, Malaysia. Under the chairmanship of Malaysia, our 13th ASCC Council was preceded by the 18th ASEAN Senior Officials Committee for the ASCC (SOCA) held on 24-25 March 2015 in Melaka. 2. We were mindful that 2015 is a year of utmost significance with the convergence of key community-building initiatives. The ASCC is implementing the remaining actions during this final year of the Roadmap for an ASEAN Community (20092015). By the end of 2015, the ASCC will be embarking on a new course which will be based on an ASCC Community 2025 vision and strategic planning framework that is currently being finalized through collaborative and consultative processes at the regional and national levels. 3. We are satisfied with the progress that the High Level Task Force for the ASCC has made in the development of the draft ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the draft ASCC Attendant Document. We noted the draft ASCC Attendant Document and it will be subjected to national consultations with appropriate government agencies and stakeholders in April 2015. 4. We appreciated the research by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) leading to an Interim Report on Framing the ASCC Post-2015 which served as a reference to the development of the draft ASCC Attendant Document. 5. We are heartened by the leadership shown by our sectoral ministerial bodies, senior officials and the support provided by our growing number of partners. We called for special efforts to be made by HLTF and SOCA to monitor and facilitate the finalization of the ASCC Attendant Document, in concert with all stakeholders, and with inputs from mechanisms like the ASCC Senior Officials Coordinating Conference Meeting (SOC-COM), and the support of the ASEAN Secretariat. 6. We took steps to enhance the ASCC governance framework by endorsing the Terms of Reference of the SOCA, which effectively clarifies its role in supporting the ASCC Council, in cross-sectoral coordination, in monitoring critical management actions for the ASCC Blueprint and its successor documents, and in its role vis-à-vis the SOC-COM. We also endorsed the Terms of Reference of SOC-COM. 7. We noted the status of implementation of the ASCC Blueprint including various ongoing and pending action. To complement remaining ASCC Blueprint actions for 2015, we endorsed a selection of priority actions designed to complement and further enhance our community-building work. We endorsed that priority work should focus on the Declaration on Institutionalising the Resilience of ASEAN and its Communities and Peoples to Disasters and Climate Change; the ASEAN Declaration on "One ASEAN, One Response 2020 and Beyond: ASEAN Responding to Disasters as One"; ASEAN Joint Statement on Climate Change 2015; ASEAN Declaration on Post-2015 Priorities on Civil Service; ASEAN Declaration on Ageing: Empowering Older Persons on ASEAN; Regional Framework and Action Plan to Implement the ASEAN Declaration on Strengthening Social Protection; and Regional Plan of Actions on the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Regional Plan of Actions on the Elimination of Violence Against Children. We looked forward to the finalisation of the draft ASEAN instrument on the protection and promotion of the rights of migrant workers. 8. We endorsed follow-up actions recommended by SOCA to address the relevant recommendations of the HLTF on Strengthening the ASEAN Secretariat and Reviewing the ASEAN Organs. Several of these recommendations have been incorporated into the ASCC Attendant Document's results framework and strategic measures. 9. We welcomed the development of the draft TOR of ASEAN Institute of Green Economy (AIGE) following its launch at the 25th ASEAN Summit in November 2014 in Nay Pyi Taw. 10. We expressed deepest appreciation to Malaysia for the warm hospitality and excellent arrangements as the host of the 13th ASCC Council. Semua pusat beli-belah di seluruh negara yang mengambil bahagian akan memberikan tawaran yang menarik dan diskaun hebat sepanjang acara jualan yang akan berlangsung dari 14 Mac hingga 5 April, manakala Festival Kasut Antarabangsa Malaysia yang dianjurkan selama tiga hari akan bermula 13 hingga 15 Mac 2015 di Pusat Konvensyen Kuala Lumpur. Kedua-dua acara ini diadakan sebelum bermulanya edisi ke-17 Formula One Grand Prix Malaysia Petronas 2015 yang akan berlangsung dari 27 hingga 29 Mac di Litar Antarabangsa Sepang. Beliau terlebih dahulu telah dilantik sebagai duta jenama festival kasut tersebut. pelbagai pengalaman membelibelah yang seronok di Malaysia. Tema ini akan digunakan untuk ketiga-tiga kempen jualan nasional, bermula dengan Jualan 1Malaysia Grand Prix bulan ini, diikuti dengan Karnival Jualan Mega 1Malaysia dari 27 Jun hingga 31 Ogos dan Jualan Akhir Tahun 1Malaysia dari 14 November hingga 3 Januari tahun hadapan. Ketiga-tiga jualan tahunan tersebut dianjurkan setiap tahun oleh Sekretariat Shopping Malaysia, cabang promosi jualan Tourism Malaysia, dan telah memberi banyak faedah kepada sektor runcit tempatan dan membantu mempertingkatkan perbelanjaan pelancong di dalam negara. Acara pelancaran ini juga turut menyaksikan modelmodel menggayakan Koleksi Fesyen Musim Luruh dan Sejuk 2015 rekaan Datuk Zang Toi. Pertunjukan fesyen yang hebat ini telah menambahkan lagi kemeriahan Festival Kasut anjuran Kementerian Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan dengan kerjasama Persatuan Pengilang-pengilang Kasut Malaysia. Sektor beli-belah Malaysia merupakan penyumbang utama kepada pendapatan pelancongan negara dengan sumbangan sebanyak RM21.6 bilion atau 30.0 peratus daripada jumlah pendapatan keseluruhan sebanyak RM72 bilion pada 2014. Aktiviti membeli-belah juga terus kekal sebagai penyumbang kedua tertinggi dalam perbelanjaan pelancong selepas sektor penginapan yang hanya dibezakan dengan 0.3 peratus. Edisi keenam festival ini mempamerkan lebih daripada 100 jenama kasut tempatan dan antarabangsa. Acara ini juga dijangka akan menarik lebih daripada 70,000 pengunjung dari dalam dan luar negara. Ia merupakan permulaan baik untuk acara Jualan 1Malaysia Grand Prix yang diadakan serentak bagi menawarkan pilihan membelibelah yang lebih besar kepada para pembeli di seluruh negara. Media antarabangsa, CNN, telah memilih Kuala Lumpur sebagai salah satu destinasi beli-belah terbaik dunia. Kuala Lumpur menduduki tangga keempat dalam senarai Bandar raya Beli-belah Terbaik Dunia CNN untuk dua tahun berturut-turut (2012 dan 2013). Ini meletakkan Malaysia dalam kelompok bandar raya belibelah ternama dunia seperti New York, Tokyo dan London. In the latest Annual Global Retirement Index for 2015 produced by International Living, Malaysia topped the list of all Asian retirement destinations and ranked fourth in the world after Ecuador, Panama, and Mexico. Malaysia is the only Asian nation that made it into the top ten list besides Thailand (at number ten). The report had analysed 25 countries and ranked them in categories including real estate costs, special benefits offered to retirees, entertainment and amenities, safety and stability, healthcare, climate, infrastructure, and cost of living. The report noted Malaysia’s robust economy which is reflected in the consistently high standard of living available to locals and expats alike. It also stated that the quality of life in Malaysia is cost-efficient and excellent, while the typical expat locations such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang offer high-quality real estate at low rental. Coining Malaysia as the ‘Great Value for Money in a Cultural Melting Pot’, the report indicated that a retiree can savour a life of luxury in the country on a modest budget. The report also said that Malaysia makes a perfect base to explore the natural, historical, and cultural treasures that Southeast Asia has to offer. The proliferation of low-cost Asian airlines in recent years has made it easier (and more affordable) than ever to explore the rest of Asia. Direct flights to the U.S. are also available. It also noted that it was easier for retirees to fit in and socialise with the locals as English was a widely spoken language. Also worthy of mention is the health care quality in Malaysia, which is comparable to that in any First-World nation as reported in the index. International Living is an online and print magazine that focuses on living in foreign destinations. 12 | Ministry Of Tourism And Culture, Malaysia THREE AWARDS FOR MALAYSIA AT ITB BERLIN Malaysia received three awards in Berlin, Germany, last week, a sweet reward to end a successful show at ITB 2015, one of the world’s most prestigious tourism trade events. Malaysia took home the first prize in the print category of the Golden City Gate Awards for its advertisement that featured the country’s age-old wayang kulit theatre tradition (pictured right). Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak as the Chairman of ASEAN himself, is part of a joint ASEAN promotional campaign ITB Berlin, held from 4 to 8 March 2015, is the world's leading travel trade show connecting tourism buyers with destinations from around the globe. This year's show brought together 100,000 visitors and involved over 10,000 exhibitors from 190 countries showcasing their travel experiences, reflecting how intensely competitive the global travel industry is today. The award-wining advertisement is part of Tourism Malaysia’s on-going advertising campaign to promote the Malaysia Year of Festivals (MyFest) 2015 which emphasizes the many cultural aspects celebrated by Malaysia’s diverse population. Aptly themed “Endless Celebrations”, the MyFest 2015 campaign has identified more than 200 exciting celebrations in its calendar of events for tourists to experience in Malaysia. Tourism Malaysia also won the Most Innovative Chapter Award by Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) for its initiatives, leadership and commitment to community practices in sustainability, technology, connectivity, and education. The third award Tourism Malaysia received was the second place as best Asian Tourism Board by Go Asia. Go Asia is a well-known organisation that serves as a promotional platform for Asian countries that have a tourism representation in German-speaking countries. Go Asia conducted the contest through a survey of its German travel advisors. Datuk Dr. Ong Hong Peng, the Secretary General of Ministry of Tourism & Culture Malaysia, who led the Malaysian delegation to ITB 2015 said, “The awards are a wonderful recognition for the promotional efforts of the Ministry and the marketing campaigns we are doing here for Malaysia.” Also present at ITB 2015, Dato’ Mirza Mohammad Taiyab, Director General of Tourism Malaysia said, “It’s great for Malaysia to be recognized. The unique GOASEAN initiative, mooted by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Sri Buletin 1MOTAC | 13 1MALAYSIA VOLUNTOURISM Program Pembersihan Pasca Banjir di Negeri Kelantan dan Pahang Menyedari pelbagai jenis bantuan boleh disalurkan untuk membantu meringankan beban mangsa-mangsa banjir, Pejabat Kementerian Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan (MOTAC) Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur/Putrajaya, telah mengambil inisiatif mengadakan program 1Voluntourism Pembersihan Pasca Banjir 2015 dengan kerjasama agensiagensi lain di bawah MOTAC. Program selama tiga hari yang bermula 16 Januari 2015 itu menyaksikan 30 orang peserta menyertai misi membantu mangsa-mangsa banjir di negeri Kelantan dan Pahang. Banjir besar yang melanda negeri-negeri di Pantai Timur pada Disember 2014 merupakan antara yang terburuk dalam sejarah Negara. Dengan kerugian infrastruktur dan aset awam yang dianggarkan lebih RM200 juta, yang tidak termasuk kerugian individu persendirian dan perniagaan, skala kemusnahan kawasan-kawasan yang terlibat adalah dianggap luar biasa. Antara agensi yang turut terlibat sama ialah Puspanita MOTAC, Kesatuan Pekerja-Pekerja Tourism Malaysia, Tourism Malaysia, Arkib Negara Malaysia, Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia, Jabatan Muzium Malaysia, Perbadanan Kemajuan Kraftangan Malaysia dan Lembaga Pembangunan Seni Visual Negara. Jika sebelum ini kawasan mudah banjir Kelantan, sebagai contoh, lebih bertumpu di muara Sungai Kelantan seperti Kota Bharu, Pasir Mas, dan Tumpat kesan gabungan hujan dan air pasang, kali ini banjir telah merebak ke kawasan hulu yang jauh dari laut, seperti Gua Musang dan Kuala Krai. Malah, kawasan itulah yang mengalami kemusnahan lebih teruk berbanding kawasan lain. Mereka membantu membersihkan kawasan yang mengalami kemusnahan akibat banjir serta menyerahkan bantuan keperluan asas kepada mangsa banjir di beberapa kawasan iaitu Pintu Geng, Kota, Jalan Pintu Geng Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Masjid Tok Ayah Kg. Sireh, Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Madrasah Pak Ngah Hj. Awang Kg. Paloh, Kota Bharu, Kelantan dan Kampung Paya Jejawi, Temerloh, Pahang. Sehubungan dengan kejadian banjir ini, MOTAC juga telah mengadakan Majlis Amal Bantuan Bencana Banjir 1MOTAC pada 27 Disember 2014 di Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur. Sumbangan wang tunai ebanyak RM22,000 oleh orang ramai telah berjaya dikumpulkan dan diserahkan kepada The Gleneagles Hospital dan Tabung Bencana Banjir NSTP – Media Prima. 14 | Ministry Of Tourism And Culture, Malaysia KARNIVAL NILAI-NILAI MURNI DAN SEMARAK WARISAN 2015 Didik masyarakat mengenali adat dan warisan Karnival Nilai-Nilai Murni dan Semarak Warisan anjuran Kementerian Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan (MOTAC) dengan kerjasama Kerajaan Negeri Melaka pada 25 Mac 2015 telah mendapat sambutan menggalakkan di kalangan pengunjung dan pelancong yang datang di Kompleks Ikan Bakar Terapung Fort Supai, Kuala Linggi, Melaka. Karnival Nilai-Nilai Murni dan Semarak Warisan ini dirasmikan bersama Menteri Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan, YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz dan Ketua Menteri Melaka, Datuk YAB Datuk Seri Ir. All they need to do is tap the card reader at the gates to board the train. 16 | Ministry Of Tourism And Culture, Malaysia 2015 BAKAL GEGAR PENTAS ISTANA BUDAYA 2015 pasti menjadi tahun yang dinanti-nantikan buat peminat seni pentas tanah air dengan Istana Budaya bakal membawa kelainan pada tahun ini sempena Tahun Festival Malaysia (MyFEST 2015). Di Majlis Pelancaran Program Istana Budaya 2015 pada 29 Januari, Ketua Pengarah Istana Budaya, Datuk Mohamed Juhari Shaarani berkata, pengaturan jadual-jadual persembahan di Istana Budaya lebih mengikut tema perayaan-perayaan utama. “Pada awal tahun ini, kita telah pun membuka tirai pentas Istana Budaya dengan Muzikal Tahajjud Cinta – Sirah Rasulullah sempena Maulidur Rasul. Selepas itu, sebuah muzikal cina, Guan Yin Pusa pula diadakan sempena Tahun Baru Cina pada Februari nanti,” kata beliau ketika ditemui selepas Pelancaran Program Istana Budaya 2015. Tambahnya, sebagai langkah untuk lebih mengharmonikan hubungan Malaysia – China ekoran tragedi MH370, Istana Budaya berhasrat untuk mengangkat tiga produksi besar dari China sebagai menyokong hubungan diplomasi antara kedua-dua negara tersebut yang telah terjalin sejak 40 tahun lampau. Sementara itu, Menteri Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan, YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz ketika berucap semasa pelancaran tersebut mengumumkan Konsert Teaterikal Suara Kita yang menggabungkan tiga artis ternama negara, Awie, Erra Fazira dan Ziana Zain meraih kutipan tertinggi sebanyak RM1.2 juta lantas menjadi konsert terlaris pada tahun lalu. Tambahnya lagi, Muzikal Supermokh pula antara produksi yang paling banyak mendapat tajaan sejak 14 tahun Istana Budaya beroperasi iaitu sebanyak 16 penaja. Nazri juga berkata bagi musim ini, seiring dengan MyFEST 2015, Istana Budaya mensasarkan 50% pementasan akan diberi kepada produksi tempatan dan antarabangsa juga sebanyak 50%. “Penyeimbangan produksi tempatan dan antarabangsa ke arah menjadikan seni sebagai industri kepada para penggiat seni tanah air terutamanya golongan muda,” katanya lagi. Pementasan produksi seni dari luar negara sudah pasti dapat menarik minat pelancong dan khalayak dari negara-negara ASEAN khususnya Singapura, Brunei, Indonesia dan lain-lain. Ini selaras dengan pemilihan Malaysia sebagai Pengerusi ASEAN pada tahun ini yang dijangka mampu menyemarakkan perkembangan rantaian ekonomi negara dan juga sektor pelancongan. Bhag Singh Ketua Unit Komunikasi Korporat Kementerian Pelancongan dan Kebudayaan Malaysia Dewasa ini acapkali kita diselubungi dengan pelbagai rintihan oleh individu yang mengalami “stress” (tekanan) ketika menjalankan tugas di tempat kerja. Selanjutnya, “stress” yang tidak terkawal boleh membawa kepada “burnout” (kelesuan kerja). Natijahnya, organisasi berhadapan dengan prestasi kerja yang kurang memuaskan dan nescaya ini menjejaskan imej organisasi berkenaan. Kita sedia maklum tekanan yang berlaku yang disebabkan oleh kesukaran melaksanakan tanggungjawab yang diamanahkan. Tekanan ini menimbulkan kesusahan, konflik serta kekeliruan dalam menjalankan tugas. Kesusahan, konflik serta kekeliruan yang berterusan ini, seandainya tidak diuruskan dengan baik, mengakibatkan berlakunya apa yang diistilahkan sebagai “burnout”. “Burnout” mengakibatkan ketandusan daya emosi, ketandusan daya fizikal dan seterusnya sikap dan perasaan kurang pencapaian dalam kerjaya individu. Ini seterusnya akan menyebabkan individu rasa lebih tertekan, lantas menjadi penyumbang kepada penurunan presatasi kerja individu serta organisasi. Oleh yang demikian, pengurusan organisasi perlu menngenali punca-punca “burnout” dan berusaha mengenalpasti cara-cara mengatasinya segera. Ketika mengalami “burnout”, seseorang pekerja akan merasa bosan dan tidak mampu memberi perhatian sepenuhnya terhadap kerja yang dilakukan. Kajian oleh sarjana-sarjana dalam bidang psikologi dan sosiologi jelas menunjukkan semakin tinggi kadar “burnout”, semakin rendah presatasi kerja seseorang. Kualiti dan kuantiti kerja turut berkurangan. Justeru, apakah sebenarnya faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi “burnout” ? Dua faktor utama, yang saling berkait-rapat, dalam memperkatakan tentang “burnout” adalah personaliti dan organisasi. Aspek personaliti dan hubung-kaitnya dengan komunikasi ditumpu –jurus dalam penulisan ringkas ini. Sama ada kita sedar atau tidak, tabiat yang dipupuk dalam diri, adalah punca kepada “burnout” yang dialami. Seseorang yang berfikiran negatif berpotensi tinggi mengalami “burnout”. Individu yang bersifat “perfectionist” ini, inginkan segalagalnya dalam keadaan terbaik dan seratus peratus sempurna – lantas tidak dapat mengawal diri apabila memikirkan masalah yang bakal timbul. Kesempurnaan dalam semua hal ditokok dengan jangkaan yang tidak realistik menyebabkan tekanan yang berterusan serta menghasilkan “burnout”. Inilah yang dalam isitilah psikologi digelar orang yang mempunyai Personaliti A. Di antara sifat-sifat utama mereka yang berpersonaliti A, termasuklah, rendah harga diri, yakni sering merasa diri tidak berguna dan cuba mengasingkan diri daripada orang, gopoh, dalam pengertian ingin melakukan banyak perkara dalam jangka masa yang singkat, agresif dan permusuhan, iaitu melihat setiap perkara sebagai cabaran besar dan wajib dihadapi tanpa permuafakatan.
