CURRENT ACTIVITIES
ETEP (www.etep.nl). Due to financial support from the
European Commission for the next five years Eurosonic
Noorderslag, Yourope and all other participating partners
will be able to continue the already successful ETEP program
and develop it. In the next years we will be able to add more
festivals and create more results for the selected ETEP acts
and festivals and work on better opportunities and border
breaking carriers for European Artists in Europe.
YES Group (Yourope Event Safety Group). Since
2006, Yourope has organised twelve seminars and workshops for festival security staff from all over Europe in
cooperation with the ILMC Safety Focus Group. The Safety
Focus Group is now integrated into Yourope and named
YES Yourope Event Safety Group. Yourope members who
participate in these seminars get special discounts.
Green’n’Clean. In 2006/7 Yourope launched environmental guidelines for music festivals. The original printed
booklet “Green‘n‘Clean“ has been supplemented by an online
tool, providing festival organisers with customised
environmental advice plus a “Green‘n‘Clean Award” for
festivals who achieve a defined number of criteria in terms of
environmental measures. Since September 2009, Yourope copromoted two seminars for “Sustainable Management” at
Bucks New University in cooperation with agreenerfestival.com,
Julie’s Bicycle and Theresa Moore from Bucks New University.
Yourope was a partner of the Green Events Conference in
Bonn/Germany in November 2010. Yourope is also a founding
member of the Green Operations (GO) Group. The Green
Operations (GO) Group is an independent, pan European and
cross industry think-tank to inspire people in the music festival
and event industry to run their operations greener and smarter.
Initiated in November 2010 by Bucks University, GreenEvents

THE YOUROPE EVENT SAFETY GROUP
Conference, Green Music Initiative (GMI) and Yourope at the 1st
International GreenEvents Conference in Bonn, the first GO
Group workshop will take place in Amsterdam from the 23rd –
24th May 2011. Yourope members who participate in these
seminars get special discounts.
Virtual Festivals Europe. In October 2008, Yourope
launched the first pan-European Festival portal eu.
virtualfestivals.com in cooperation with Virtual Festivals to
aggregate more than 3000 music festivals, 20,000
performing artists and 50 million festivalgoers across 45
countries. Yourope members get special discount rates if
they book advertisements on this European festival platform
(see more details under eu.virtualfestivals.com).
Festival Awards European. Following on from the
website Yourope and Virtual Festivals Europe worked in cooperation with Eurosonic Noorderslag in October 2009 to
launch the Festival Awards Europe with 12 categories. The
2nd Award Ceremony took place on 12th January 2011 at the
Stadtschouwbourg Theatre in Groningen (NL) including
dinner, live bands and aftershow party. The number of online
votes from the 1st to the 2nd edition grew from 100’000 up
to 350’000 votes.
Various. Having gained respect within the industry and at
government level, Yourope also has the power to lobby for
all legal and industry issues relating to the European festival
industry on behalf of its members and together with other
associations in the live music business. If that wasn’t enough,
Yourope also focuses on other key issues for festivals – such
as marketing and sponsoring – and will concentrate on the
information exchange between the festival members in
areas like backline, radio/TV/Internet rights, tax information,
merchandsing rates and more.
The Yourope Event Safety group has as its mission as a non
profit making organisation to act as a catalyst in the context of
event safety, crowd management and associated disciplines.
The group will facilitate partners across Europe to engage in
dialogue and activities which support the development of best
practice at events. The group has a vision to enhance the
knowledge of and enable participation in the support of
initiatives which continually strive to create safer event
environments in Europe.
Over the last ten years in various guises the group has delivered
seminars throughout Europe focusing on the real issues on
health and safety at concerts. The group in partnership with
industry and education received funding from the European
Council for Health and Safety to create a health and safety
database for those working at events to enable them to use
good practice to help them develop and deliver risk assessment,
safety procedures and view and utilise a range of tools including
job descriptions and guidance from across Europe.
The group is concerned with the development of an integrated
safety culture connecting both the internal and external
customer environments. The focus of the group is on the
following areas:
• Crowd Management
• Health & Safety
• Event Security
• Risk Assessment, Analysis and Management
• Systems and Procedures
• Business Continuity
• Disaster Management
Presently the group is working on a range of activities and
focusing on show stop procedures, new configurations of
event venues and topics such as weather and unusual
conditions at events and has recently been focusing on
sporting crowds and the Olympic Games. Whenever issues
occur the group makes it possible for those at events to
discuss these in detail, learn and then apply good practice to
their own events.
Through an active approach to the subject and through
support of agencies and event businesses, the Group intends
to support the development of a generic safety culture
through the following aims and objectives:
• To encourage dialogue related to health and safety, crowd
management and associated disciplines at events through
conferences, projects and other forms
• To create a forum through which existing knowledge can
be shared by the widest possible audience
• To create new knowledge through projects based in the
live event environment and through academic approaches
• To encourage knowledge exchange/transfer and the
dissemination of best practice from existing events to others
• To make Governmental Organisations aware where
conflicting practices or confusing legislation have been
identified
• To seek funding for individual projects through the
network of industrial partners and organisations
• To create original data in an available format accessible
easily by those working in events across Europe
• To identify and discuss issues pertinent to the event
environment
The seminars carried out by the group have taken place across
Europe including Groningen, Berlin and Great Missenden.
There are two seminars a year. The first exclusively for Yourope
members and the second is opened up to a wider audience
from a range of disciplines working at events and festivals.
One of the main focuses of the group is to make as much progress
as possible in stopping deaths and injury at events. The use of
Roskilde as a model has been very useful for this and in conjunction
with Bucks New University a series of research projects have been
carried out trialled firstly at Rosklilde and then pushed out into a
range of festivals around Yourope. The pressure barrier study,
questionnaires on health and safety and most recently the pressure
suit project have all followed this pattern. A new education course
for those at events is being developed at this moment and will be
available to Yourope members in September.
The next seminar on May 26/27, 2011 at Missenden Abbey in
England promises an exciting and progressive programme
linking sport and festival crowd behaviour and we hope to
attract as many members as possible to share ideas an
knowledge in the development of practical health and safety
cultures across the festival arena.

Hosted right in the center of France, the
Printemps de Bourges music festival was
founded in 1977 as a response to a lack
of TV and radio exposure for new talent.
Today, the festival is flourishing with a
record of hosting over 4,000 artists, a
stable identity and efficient means to
scout out for new talent, making it a
renowned hotspot among professionals.
Each year the festival sheds a new light
on today’s music, ranging from songs,
pop music, rock, to contemporary
music, all hosted on 14 different stages
gathering a wide audience, 85% of
which is under 25 years old.

Hamburg district of Winterhude. The
whole atmosphere is completely natural,
nice and relaxing and can be stated as
one of Germany’s prettiest Open Air
venues. A string of world famous stars
have played the venue and enjoyed it as
much as the thrilled audience no matter
if the sun was shining or the rain was
pouring down. In the past year
investments in the venue have been
made by the concert organiser who is
also the exclusive tenant of the venue.
This has improved artist’s, production as
well as audience facilities. This has made
the old venue even nicer. Whenever in

to check out this venue and to feel the
unmistakable good vibe of this arena
yourself. The season starts in May and
runs through to September. There are
concerts on weekdays and weekends.

NOVA ROCK – the biggest rock festival

Since 2005 a music festival is held on
the Pannonia Fields in Nickelsdorf. It’s a
festival as Austria has not seen it before
and it can easily stand international
comparisons. With breathtaking speed
NOVA ROCK Festival has joined in the
Champions League of major Rock’N’Roll
events since then and can now be found
in every event-calendar worldwide.
And a brilliant line up has been
confirmed for 2011 again:
IRON MAIDEN, LINKIN PARK, SYSTEM
OF A DOWN, VOLBEAT, MOTÖRHEAD,
THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS, and many
more will make the Pannonia Fields
shake! On the way to a million – NOVA
ROCK in the forward gear!
About 850,000 people have visited the
NOVA ROCK in the past six years, a
great number and proof of the cult
status the festival has earned already. In
2011 we will probably welcome the
millionth visitor and Ewald Tatar and his
team will not spare any expense or
effort in the next years to provide a
great line up to all NOVA ROCK fans.
Along with Mayor Gerhard Zapfl and
the community of Nickelsdorf all
contracts were extended for another six
years and all the walking and driving
routes are about to be improved for
better infrastructure, because the only
real headliner is of course: WENDI’S

Passauer Pfingst-Open-Air is a festival
with a long tradition, taking place since
1980. The festival concept was
modernized by Musikbegegnungen e.V.
in 2001. Located in the south-east of
Bavaria (Germany) and bordering
Austria and Czech Republic the site is
embedded in the beautiful scenery of
the bavarian forest. The festival is well
culture (like having a crane for “beer
case climbing” instead of “normal”
bungee jumping and a “Frühschoppen”
– a special breakfast with white
sausages and beer – on Sunday
morning). Of course, a band is playing
traditional music to this. Welcome to
where musical Bavaria meets the world
– and vice versa!
This year the Pinkpopfestival is having
it’s 42st edition! The most famous
festival of the Netherlands has been
visited by more than 1.9 million visitors
in its 41 editions and sold-out 21 times.
The first Pinkpop Festival took place in
1970. This makes the festival the longest
running un-interrupted annual open air
popfestival in Europe (this fact owed the
festival a place in the Guinness Book of
known and loved for its relaxed
atmosphere and its big variations to
keep the crowd alive: 21 bands on the
mainstage perform almost any style
while the culture stage offers a large
variation of theatre, poetry slams,
comedy,
workshops
and
art.
Additionally, the festival is strongly
influenced by the special Bavarian
Records). The famous rock festival has
since 1988 taken place on the splendid
festival site of MEGALAND in Landgraaf.
The community of Landgraaf is in the
south of the Netherlands and situtated
in the county of Limburg, 135 miles
from Amsterdam. The music is performed on three stages on the site, which
also include a vast festival market as well
as a huge camping area. The Pinkpop
Festival normally takes place in Whitsun
weekend **(accept for very early
Whitsunweekends)** and presents a
wide range of contemporary music. The
successful festival has an extensive
collaboration with several national
media and is being broadcast live on TV
and radio.

Since its first edition in 2006, Día de la
Música Heineken has incorporated the
spirit of the European Music Day, from
which the festival was inspired. The
main aim of the event is to promote
young artists and help them display their
work. The greatest up and coming
bands of the country’s independent
scene have participated in the Día de la
Música Heineken Festival, many of them
gaining a good reputation after playing
at the event.
10
This philosophy has been the guideline
for the event which has gained national
notoriety and particularly in Madrid it
has become the most important
independent music festival of the
Spanish capital.
Over 30.000 visitors, more than 70
shows and over 250 bands and artists,
that is our most successful result for the
c/o pop in 2010. Since 2004, the festival
is held once a year in Cologne, and
spans over five days, during which the
cathedral city stands under the banner
of pop culture. Because unlike other
festivals, the c/o pop festival involves the
whole city. Instead of taking place at a
notorious “green field”, the c/o pop
festival integrates unusual venues such
as the roof of the Museum Ludwig or
the Cologne Philharmonie. This year the
festival will take place from the 22nd to
26th June. Europareise is an international networking platform within the c/o
pop festival. It is primarily aimed at
festivals and institutions around the
world (In 2010 around 70 festivals and
institutions from 25 countries took part)
and offers the perfect opportunity to
get in touch and do business with
representatives of the German music
industry (eg, labels, booking agencies)

Open’er is the largest Polish open-air
music and performing arts festival and
definitely the most important music
event in Poland and in this region – a
city in the north of Poland at the Baltic
Sea coast. The Gdynia-Kosakowo
Airfield is a 80 hectare space that
contained so far 7 stages, around 120
artists, camp site, beach, sea and sun,
space for sports activities and
multimedia, films, fashion tent with
catwalk, theatres and performances.
With app. 100 Euro for a four day
camping ticket, Heineken Open’er is
one of the best valued major festivals in
the world, outstripping most festivals
with absolutely no compromise on
the amazing acts. Combined with
reasonable air travel from either RyanAir
or Wizz Air it has never been a better
time for festival goers to experience
their musical favourite music for less.
There’s also Polish hospitality, nice
people around, good food and really,
really beautiful girls. One more thing –
festival is located on former military
airport, so there are acres of military
grass and few bunkers!
Open’er is held for a decade – this year
we will celebrate its 10th anniversary.
For the second year in a row the festival
has won Best Major Festival award at
the European Festival Awards 2010.
Roskilde Festival is the largest music
festival in Northern Europe – attracting
audiences from all over Europe and the
rest of the world. It is an independent,
non-profit festival organised by The
Roskilde Festival Charity Society.
Roskilde Festival presents an up to date
and progressive music programme as
well as lots of events, art and activities.
Approximately 170 bands play at the
festival. The camping areas open on the
Sunday preceding the festival with
upcoming acts playing a smaller stage
and many activities during the days up
to Thursday. An extensive environmental
programme is implemented each year
including a refund system. All profits
from the festival are donated to
humanitarian, cultural and non-profit
projects that benefit people all over the

RhEINKULTUR is Germany’s biggest freeof-charge festival. In the course of more
than 25 years, this event has developed
into a real crowd-puller with audiences
of up to 200,000 people. They come
from all over Germany and adjacent
countries to see a multitude of different
styles on different stages. RhEINKULTUR
offers an open-minded program for
open-minded people. RhEINKULTUR is
held annually on the last weekend of
June or the first weekend of July. The
event is financed through beverage
sales, sponsor support and public
funding by the city of Bonn. In spite of
its restricted budget, the RhEINKULTUR
team has been able to turn the festival
into a huge event which meets all the
standards set by commercial festivals.
This could not be achieved without the
generous help of partners, bands and
volunteers alike. RhEINKULTUR is the
only event of this size to carry the
“Sound For Nature” seal which the
festival was awarded for its commitment
to conservation and sustainability. 2007
it was one of the few european festivals
to receive Yourope’s «Green’n’Clean»Award for environmetal friendly
festivals. In 2008 the festival established its own sustainability program
“RhEINKULTUR Green Rocks”. The high
attendance proves that RhEINKULTUR’s
concept works: it offers a high-quality,
multi-faceted program without relying
on the very big names.

The Gurtenfestival was launched in
1977 as an international folk-festival.
Up through the 90’s the festival has
established itself as a major venue for
contemporary music with a capacity of
20.000 people per day. The festival
ground, which is located 858 meters
above sea level, is often described as the
most enchanting in Switzerland. The site
is situated on the wooded Gurten Hill in
the largest public park in the area
belonging to the city of Berne. The
journey to the top takes 30–40 minutes
on foot or 3 minutes by railway.
The festival site has two openair

new talent as to the celebration of
established stars. Its 6 stages, both
covered and open-air, can accommodate
audiences ranging from 500 to 30,000.
Open to other forms of artistic
expression, Paléo Festival also invites
audiences to enjoy circus acts, comedy
and numerous performances involving
street theatre. The Festival’s sense of
social and ecological responsibilities was
recently awarded some distinctions: the
Nice Future Attitude prize in 2006, 2007

and the Midem Green World Award in

Even though its success has established
it today as a leader in the fields of

maintained low affordable prices (35

Kubana is International Open Air Music
Festival. The only one that takes place
on the seaside in Eastern Europe. The
festival is being held for already three
years in the south of Russia, in Black Sea
resort, one of the most beautiful Russian
places. This fact lets combine traditional
pastime for joy at multi-days rock
festivals with pleasure of staying at sea.
The festival lasts for three days. During
this time guests can enjoy not only
music but the different kinds of activities
(sports, art, cinema) on the beach and
all over the territory. The first year
Kubana was visited by 8000 people, the
second year the amount of guests
reached 30000. Music policy is only
the best, the brightest and remarkable bands from CIS contries (Lyapis
Trubezkoiy, Tarakany!, Spitfire, Distemper,
Boombox) and world stars (NOFX,
Nouvelle Vague). This year the festival
will start on July, 29 and last till July, 31.
It will be expanded, equipped,
modernized. We are planning to have
guests not only from CIS contries, but
from European countries too. In 2011,
the music geography of the festival is
increasing like increasing its size and the
number of expected visitors. Line-up
includes legendary Marky Ramone and
his new project Marky Ramone’s
Blitzkrieg, hot Spanish the Locos, daring
experimenters Infected Mushroom,
well-known Skazi, rebels from USA
Anti-Flag and, of course, the brightest
and beloved stars of Russian alternative
scene.

Since the beginning in 1999 the festival
developed into a quality event for live
rock music. Once started as a local
festival, Rocco del Schlacko is meanwhile
a inherent part of the German live
musicbusiness. Rocco del Schlacko grew
that much that the festival had to move
two times until the suitable capacity for
about 15.000 festivalgoers and campers
could be provided. The green location
“Sauwasen”, once meant to be the
range land for pig famers, is surrounded
by tall, shady trees which gives the
festival an idyllic ambiance. Despite the
success of the last editions, Rocco del
Schlacko sticks to it’s intention to be a
familiar, relaxed and not over crowded
festival with short walking distances, fair
prices and definitely the best view on
stage. The international music program
with it’s focus on alternative rock ranges
from electronic to reggae and also to

visited by a multi-national audience.
Summarized Rocco del Schlacko is for

but still a top-class and up-to-date line

Seated in the beautiful “Taubertal” –
valley with a fantastic view over the
medieval town Rothenburg o.d.T. the
“Eiswiese” provides an impressive
scenery for an open-air-festival. In
addition to the very unique location the
event differs from other open-airspectacles in many ways. Instead of
entering a “who is the biggest event” –
contest, the major interest lies in a
healthy grown structure ... The thought-

transformed into a unique festival
atmosphere where you can revel in a
rich medley of culture – in the word’s
broadest sense.
The festival area stretches through the
centre of the city within walking distance of most things. Everyone is invited
and entrance is free.
With more than 900.000 visits and
traditions from the start of the 1990s,
out organisation and a high-quality
and well-mixed booking provides an
unforgotten weekend at the “Taubertal”
for all visitors. The fundamental framework is the relationship between artists
and audience ... the “Taubertal-Festival”
is the festival-szene’s clubshow! The
best proof for the concept’s success is
the fact, that the festival is sold out long
before the start ... for years ... you will
always return!

Yourope is a founding member of the Green Operations
(GO) Group. The Green Operations (GO) Group is an
independent, pan European and cross industry think-tank to
inspire people in the music festival and event industry to run
their operations greener and smarter. Initiated in November
2010 by Bucks University, GreenEvents Conference,
Green Music Initiative (GMI) and Yourope at the 1st
International GreenEvents Conference in Bonn, the first GO
Group workshop will take place in Amsterdam from the
23rd – 24th May 2011.
