President's Corner
by Linda Danoff
I
t’s just amazing, my first year as Pinion President
has passed! It went so quickly, I’m certain it was
due to our very busy schedule! Thank you to our
sponsors, Pinion board and members who sponsored,
worked and/or attended our many events. We kicked
off our year off with our summer event, Pinion Goes
to Hawaii…Hilton Style hosted at The Hilton Fort
Lauderdale and chaired by Valerie Peru and her team.
It was a beautiful tropical evening, featuring the Mai
Kai Dancers. As fall approached we had our sold out
Pinion Membership Luncheon, Kinky Boots hosted
at the Capital Grill Fort Lauderdale and chaired by
Lisa Scott Founds, Lee Sheffield and Alice Harry.
Our entertainment was over the top! ‘Diva’ kept the
joint jumping and our very own board member, Sonja
Mayo won the Best Boot contest! A good time was
had by all! Then, before we knew it, it was time for
our annual holiday event…Premiere Night, A Holiday
Spectacular! Chaired by Clio Connors, Jackie Johnson
& Valerie Kowanetz. It was the Holiday Party of the
Year at the spectacular Villa de Palms waterfront
estate of Steve Savor. The evening was rockin' with
music, dance, incredible food and libations! Spring
brought our fun filled St Patrick’s Day social, Erin
Go Bragh! Pinion Go Bragh! at Briny’s Irish Pub on
the Riverfront, chaired by Jill Pearson, Wendy Walters
and Birgit Fillengame & Marian McCray-DeLouch.
Briny’s served their famous Irish buffet and we had
the Fire Fighters Pipe & Drum band get us all in the
Irish spirit. Pinion has had so many great people that
have given in our 24 years, that we decided to create
a Hall of Fame. We all gathered for Pinion Rock ‘n
Roll Hall of Fame at Timpano’s Chophouse, chaired
by Cathy Danielle, Lee Sheffield and Alice Harry.
Pinion Hall of Famer, Lisa Scott-Founds and Rising
Star, Clio Connors were honored for their above and
beyond participation over the years. Pinion presented
Special
Olympics
of
Broward County $122,000
and Victory Living with
$12,000 of funds raised.
In between our fund/
fun raising events, we had
the Special Olympics of
Broward County Spring
Games, held March 17th.
The Pinion team was
present for the Opening
Ceremonies. Immediately
following Valerie Kowanetz
and the Pinion team served the athlete’s lunch.
Our Pinion Passion Hours, chaired by Valerie Peru
have been held at amazing restaurants through the
year. Thank you to our host restaurants: S3, Forks &
Balls, Q-Bar, Café Vico, Shooters and plan on joining
us at Tap 42, Tuesday, September 15th. The Pinion

with me, and our board members for their continued

Special Olympics Florida State Summer Games were held this past May at the ESPN Wide World of
Sports Complex. Over 1,800 athletes competed in track & field, bocce, cycling, soccer, tennis and
volleyball. An Olympic-style opening ceremony will feature music, guest speakers, fireworks, and the
final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run® which is a spectacular moment. The highlight of the event
was when Patrick Sallarulo was named Inspirational Athlete of the Year!
Miami Dolphins General Manager Dennis Hickey and all twenty two rookies hosted over 80 Special
Olympic athletes from Miami-Dade and Broward counties at the Doctors Hospital Training Facility at
Nova Southeastern University to promote physical fitness in the South Florida community.
More than eighty Special Olympics athletes in grades 6th-12th played flag football games, ran
through obstacle course stations and enjoyed lunch with the rookies. The athletes came from
Homestead Middle, Homestead High, Our Pride Academy, Taravella High, Olson Middle and
Jose Marti Park.
“It’s about the Dolphins way – that’s what we’re about. From Mr. Ross all the way on down.
We’re about giving back to the community,” Hickey said. “Our rookies do a great job, if you
watch them out here. They’re making that connection, having a great time. It’s a bonding for
them. It’s also integrating them into what it takes to be a Miami Dolphin: playing on the field,
winning games; but it’s also giving back to the community.”

In Broward County, the YAP (Young Athletes Program) has grown greatly since it was introduced in
2011. Today it has flourished over course of the last several years to include over 500 students ages 2-7
years of age and 20 schools across the county. YAP is targetingyoung athletes with developmental and
intellectual disabilities with the intent to introduce them the fundamantal skills of sports. The goal of
YAP is to eventually transition the young athletes upon reaching the age of 8 to the Special Olympics
traditional sports programs with their newly aquired sports skills.
