St. John’s Lutheran Church August 2016 Church Bell From the Desk of Pastor Taylor Welcome, Pastor Clark! Arriving in Buffalo during the first week of August will be our new shepherd, Pastor Ryan Clark. There is no doubt that this truly is a Divine Call, and we thank our God that Pastor Clark was chosen by Him to lead us into our future ministries. It has been an unusual and difficult road for our congregation. The loss of two beloved Pastors, within 72 hours of each other, is without precedence among the clergy members we’ve talked too. We will always miss Pastor Meyer’s sense of humor and musical worship services. Pastor Klemz had been a presence at St. John’s over four decades, and a nationally recognized scholar and powerful preacher. Both men were our leaders in the times of our lives. In the midst of our mourning and transition, so many members have stepped forward to keep our church alive, functioning and even growing. Of those asked to help at St. John’s in so many capacities, we can’t remember a single “no” from anyone in the congregation. Our staff, Carla, Beth, Kelly and Chris have done so well and cheerfully in their responsibilities. The call process during this time may have seemed cumbersome, but the Holy Spirit was with us during this journey. There is an old expression in English Common Law; “The business of the King is not done in haste.” In other words, getting it right far outweighs any easy or convenient solution. Pastor Phil’s dad told us that, during this time, there were three congregations the size of St. John’s which were competing for a similarly qualified shepherd. God chose us for reasons only known to Him. Enter Pastor Clark. Those who met with Ryan quickly noted 1 (Continued on page 3) St. John’s Lutheran Church 302 NE 2nd Street Buffalo, MN 55313 Phone: 763-682-1883 Youth Line: 763-684-0460 Fax: 763-682-1936 Noah’s Ark Pre-School: 763-682-1368 [email protected] Sharing a changeless Christ in a changing world. www.stjohnsbuffalo.org Rev. He exhibited a natural leadership ability, known in management circles as “one who walks with his people.” There is a sense of kindness in his speech, and a thorough knowledge of scripture. We got a “two-fer” in this deal; his wife Katherine is also well educated and a leader in her own right. Ryan, being 40 years old and a father of four children, will assimilate very well with the demographics of St. John’s. He is also strong with intergenerational ministries, again matching the needs of our congregation. On behalf of Pastor Hanan, Pastor Jarvis and myself, it has been an honor to serve our people during these times of change. It is now the responsibility of us all, and our joy, to rally around our Pastor and serve our Lord, Jesus Christ, as we are led. -Pastor Taylor, Retired! Qualified Charitable Donations automatically satisfy required minimum distributions for the year when the Qualified Charitable Donations is made. That’s a real advantage for a charitably minded IRA owner who doesn’t need required minimum distribution to live on. To make a contribution, contact your IRA trustee/Agent to make a transfer from the IRA directly to St. John’s Lutheran Church . Many trustees/agents already have forms and procedures in place to make this transfer. It won’t qualify if the check is made out to you. The Internal Revenue Service has said that a check from an IRA may be made payable to a charitable organization described in section 408(d)(8) and delivered by the IRA owner to the charitable organization.2 Be sure to obtain a letter of acknowledgment from the charity. Further questions, contact your IRA trustee/agent to see if your IRA qualifies for this. (This information provided by Janice Marschel.) For additonal information please call (763) 370-2423 16 I did not plan losing Pastor Phil and Pastor Klemz, who meant a lot to me, the same week in February, my Dad Tom Redmond on March 15, and my Mom Susie four months later. Yes I have a heavy heart. But my church family lifts me up. Thank you for your kind words, prayers, and cards. Thank you, Dixie, for visiting me immediately after receiving the news. Thank you, Pastor Jarvis, for coming in on your day off for support. And thank you Dave, Lynnette, Aunt Lillian, Derek, and Kelly for coming to Mom's memorial. I will be alone physically on July 30th as my husband Tom walks my daughter Jacque down the aisle. But I will not be alone. God knows the plans He has for me. Pauline Thaemert and family Dear Members of St. John’s, You are all blessed to have Pastor Dave Taylor. Words cannot express how great his words of comfort were at our time of sorrow. Thanks to the group of ladies for serving lunch and to the organist, Sandi. You are all like angels. The family of Allen Karie ~ God Bless! Limited copies of Pastor Meyer’s most recent CD are available in the church office. There is no cost for the CDs; however, you are encouraged to make a donation to the Meyer Family Benefit Fund. 17 LWML/WIM/St. John’s Women On July 6, Women in Mission an excited group of ladies gathered at Pat Norine’s house. Mary Bremmer answered our prayers. She agreed to become the new Chair, and will start in September! We have much to be thankful for. Many St. John’s members contributed to June’s Trinity First School Drive. Your donations will help make their 20162017 school year a bit easier. Our meeting came four days after a weekend at St. John’s celebrating our nation’s birthday. Pastor Taylor spoke on liberty. Women in Mission (and LWML as a whole) is all about liberty. As part of LWML, we have the liberty and freedom to use whatever strengths we have and give whatever we have to give to help others and spread God’s message. I get regular email updates from different LWML districts and zones. Like our Minnesota South District, many held recent rallies and conventions. They differed in speakers, topics, and locations, but all embraced the core values of LWML. In these emails, a topic of excitement was definitely youthfulness. LWML Groups in Alaska, Washington, Iowa, and Nebraska all announced high numbers of young women attendees. I know why they are so excited. Young women are the future of our churches, have fantastic ideas, and know how to reach out. Women in Mission is constantly trying to find ways to engage people of all ages, including young women. One way may be homemade chemical free cleaning and beauty products, which are important to many younger people. Adding these products to our Country Fair inventory could provide customers with terrific items and subsequently increase our giving. At our Women in Mission meeting we discussed possibilities for upcoming events and service projects. Getting together and making some of these products for personal and Country Fair use could be a great way to spend a few hours. I first brought this idea up in the last newsletter, and members have shared ideas about homemade products. When Women in Mission meets Thursday, August 4 at 6pm at Dunn Brothers, we will solidify plans to add homemade chemical-free products to the Country Fair inventory, and determine if we should make this a service project. Please contact me at 952-715-7281 with feedback and/or join us on August 4 and discuss it over a decaf latte. St. John’s recently celebrated Lutheran Night at the Twins game. Earlier in the month, people celebrated Torii Hunter’s induction into the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame. His speech was fabulous. First and foremost he gave thanks to Jesus Christ his Savior for his professional and personal success. Most of us won’t get a chance to be 18 courageous enough to thank God for His bounties in front of millions of fans, but we can make a difference by following the primary focal points of LWML, which are: Nurturing Faith in Christ, Making our Mission Meaningful, and Sharing Encouragement. Like the hymn “On Galilee’s High Mountain” which we sang during the July 2-3 services states, “The lives that my life touches, however great or small—Let them through me see Jesus, Who served and saved us all.” Who knows? Jesus already shines brightly through the pickles people make in His name for the Country Fair. Maybe He will also now shine through laundry detergent. “Stand fast therefore in the liberty with which Christ has made us free.” Galatians 5:1. Respectfully submitted by Beth Husom Country Fair Is Coming! Our 48th Annual Country Fair for Missions will be held Saturday, November 12th, from 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center, Fellowship Hall, and connecting hallway. We welcome your help and your donations to fill the various shops with a large variety of items. We have a dedicated group that sews beautiful quilts of different sizes, colors, and patterns. The Gift Shop features the quilts, along with knitted, crocheted, and sewn items, dishcloths, embroidered dishtowels, painted items, baby things, and homemade jewelry. The Country Store has pickles, jams, jellies, salsa, garden produce. The Holiday Shop has a variety of ornaments and decorations. The Craft Shop has unique handcrafted items.
