Spas and pampering shops are ten a penny in this town. However,
Kocoon sets itself apart from the pack, specifically because it lacks the
outrageously girly frills and frou-frou nonsense that the average Beijing
nail bar is synonymous with. Natural light seeps through every part
of the lounge, with natural wood and abundant greenery sectioning
off individual areas. There are 12 spa stations, where you can indulge
in all manner of hand and foot treatments, although reservations are
recommended for the two private spa rooms (for treatments, massages
and facials). The attention to detail is astonishing, with magazines
available in a variety of languages, and various teas, coffees, smoothies and cocktails on offer for you to sip during pampering. We highly
recommend the milk and honey foot spa (RMB 188/50 min), which
uses premium Cuccio products. Kocoon is a haven from the kitsch
and glitter that pervades so much of everyday life in the capital, and

The ‘80s may have been the decade that taste forgot, but it’s being
celebrated in all its dubious glory at Bye Bye Disco. Forget the newrevival pap that’s being “revived” by fast-fashion chains - the ultimate
in ‘80s clothing hangs on the rack. The genuine Fei Yue sneakers (made
in China, made in the Me Decade, and yours for the bargain price of
RMB 69) are delightful, and the dresses (from RMB 170 upwards)
look so toe-curlingly awful, you simply can’t resist. The clothing and
accessories will please fans of ‘80s naffness, but there’s still plenty
available for those who take more pride in their appearance. The oldschool games (RMB 35) are collectors’ items, and the other pieces of
‘80s trinketry are simply divine. A haven for fans of the past, Bye Bye
Disco is ‘80s to the core and devotees of kitsch and retro will flock

I
t’s all over... yet again. The Olympics came to an end, but the
blow was softened slightly by the Paralympics. But now that
they’re over and done with as well, how will we cope? Retail
therapy, of course, especially as you can now own a piece of Beijing
Olympic history.
Savvy volunteers have been making the most of the collective
post-Olympic depression and have been selling off their official
uniforms. Yes, those ubiquitous blue-and-white swirly Beijing
Volunteer T-shirts are now collectors’ items, and bidding is fierce.
We were slightly taken aback, when surfing the classifieds on the
Beijinger website, to discover that the starting price for said items is
around RMB 1,400 for a T-shirt, or RMB 2,000 for a complete set.
Depends how much you want those volunteer uniforms. For those
who don’t have thousands of spare RMB kicking about, take heart
in the knowledge that less-than-genuine versions are also available,
and are much cheaper.
In other T-shirt news, hutong hipsters NLGX have launched
their new fall collection. The new designs include tributes to the
traditional Beijing trikes that tool around town, alongside re-vamped
versions of old favorites such as the “bu chai” and “China Chick”
logos (RMB 90).
However, this seems to be the most affordable stuff available this
fall. While wandering around town, noting all the shops and malls
that are shortly due to open, we couldn’t help but notice that you
need fairly deep pockets to make the most of them. The new Intime
Lotte mall at Wangfujing is clearly pitching to the billionaire market,
with high-end brands fitting out most of the building. The glistening
Giorgio Armani at the Yintai Center will open fairly soon.
It all looks very pretty, but not a lot of use to people like yours
truly who can’t even afford the carrier bags there. And finally Lane
Crawford is starting to stock the new fall/winter lines for top brands
such as Yves Saint Laurent and the like. Gorgeous threads indeed, but
again, a tad on the pricey side.
Still, we’re not going to moan too much about Lane Crawford
since they’re also appealing to the high street as well. We were squealing with excitement at the news that Lane Crawford will start stocking
the Kate Moss for Top Shop collection from November. This one
will probably sell out fairly quickly, but for those who do get there
in time, expect to find the floaty tea dresses, sharp tailored jackets,
and quirky prints that Moss is famed for. Elbows at the ready, girls...

What options are available to sportsmen who’ve retired? Punditry?
Endorsements of lean-fat grilling machines? Or starting your own
fashion label? Well, it worked for Li Ning, and seemed tempting
enough for Paolo Maldini and Christian Vieri to follow suit after the
Italians’ respective football careers came to an end in 2003. They
founded the brand Sweet Years, a successful streetwear label which
is now available in Beijing’s Oriental Plaza. The Italian influence is
immediately apparent, with the chic brand logo peppering the flattering outfits, decor of the store, and the Italian scooter in the window.
We didn’t spot any football shirts on our visit, but were drawn to the
pink bikini, with bowknot detail (RMB 1,200), and unisex hat with its
golden chain adornment (RMB 895). A 30-percent off summer sale

Summer’s over, and as winter approaches, it’s time to wrap up warm.
If down jackets and polyester wool blends aren’t really your thing,
it’s worth investing in cashmere. And if you’re going to splash out on
this most luxurious of fabrics, you might as well go the whole hog.

S
ustainability and eco-awareness may be in vogue, but precious few
designers operate with this ethos as standard. Changchun-born Ma
Ke, however, holds sustainability integral to all that she creates.
A graduate of the Suzhou Institute of Silk Textile Technology, she held
her debut fashion show in 1995, before launching her ready-to-wear women’s
collection (Exception de Mixmind, www.mixmind.com) in 1996 and was
invited to Paris to showcase her designs during the China Culture Week.
More recently, in 2007, she was voted Asian Designer of the Year in Elle
magazine, and was invited to Paris once more where she showed offerings
from her couture label Wuyong (which translates as “useless”). The Wuyong
label inspired Jia Zhangke’s award-winning documentary Useless, which
focuses on mass-produced clothing.
This year has been another good one for Ma. Her Wuyong collection has
traveled from London’s V&A museum to the Paris Haute Couture Week,
making her the fi rst Chinese designer in history to be invited to the event.

DESIGN CONCEPT
Ma Ke’s defi ning characteristic is that she rejects many of the principles so
often associated with her industry, namely the rampant consumerism associated with fast fashion. Instead, she emphasizes quality, artisan techniques,
and artistic expression, demonstrated by the fact that she only works with
artisans who use handlooms. This way she is creating objects, which are
“the bearers of values for the future.”
The ready-to-wear collection, Exception de Mixmind, features this
intricate craftsmanship, and uses sustainable fabrics like cotton and flax,
which give the clothes a casual-looking feel and an artistic look.
Indeed, art takes precedence over functionality, particularly in the
Wuyong collections. Some critics describe her work as “anti-fashion,” but
this esoteric, conceptual style fits perfectly with haute couture, which has
long celebrated art and beauty rather than day-to-day practicality.

The Wuyong collection took the Paris Haute Couture week by storm. While
little of it would appear to be, for want of a better word, wearable, there is
much to be admired nonetheless. The clothing has a sculptural quality,
with the elaborate, voluminous shapes. There is mud-like texture which
comes from Ma Ke burying the fabrics in earth to “let nature add the
fi nishing touches,” leaving an intriguing coloring and pattern. Whilst this
collection is best considered as a work of art, rather than a simple fashion
show, she uses her art to question usefulness, and hint towards a return to
more earthy pursuits.

Hats – Japan Style
A perfect pair, these two would fit in on any trendy
street in Asia. They capture the current fascination
with hats on boys. This kind of hat actually looks
better on Asian guys, so I think this style will
remain. They even do a good job making casual
look louche.
Vintage, At Last
It’s finally happening. An appreciation of vintage and secondhand
items is slowly creeping into first-tier cities on the Mainland.
Initially, it was leather bags and jackets, but some of the more
fashion-forward types are also going for dresses (this one, a print
of ducks, was purchased in Amsterdam), jeans, and other items
that were just made better before.
Simple Animals
A single, very well-designed beast is replacing the cartoony
creatures that used to adorn T-shirts. Animals will no doubt
appreciate the increase in respect shown through more
accurate depictions using better fabrics. No one deserves it
more than the panda.

On Every Trend
One probably wouldn’t even notice this person but she is packing
just as many current trends into her outfit as she has accessories
and articles of clothing. The big LV bag (Asia’s emblem of class), the
camo print belt, the stacked, skinny jeans and waistcoat
(ubiquitous this summer), all of which place this pretty thing firmly
in this moment.
Skulls
Vanity and mortality are not favored topics for hip young
urbanites of hyper-optimistic Beijing, but then the skull
has been co-opted globally by clever marketers and made
a symbol of our unapologetic materialism. Even this latest
creative rendition of the skull seems a bit dead.
Boots and Shorts
You’re surprised to see this picture. We all recognize this,
but didn’t think it would appear in any kind of style page
meant to appeal to foreigners. The fact is that this is one
of the most representative looks in Beijing of the transition
from summer to fall. After leaving this city, this image will
remain etched in your memory forever.
Ahmadinejad Collar
The man just has a huge influence on everything from world
events to fashion, from Beirut to Beijing. New England mothers
used to clip off the top buttons of casual shirts to make sure their
little boys wouldn’t look nerdy, but the poise of Mr. President, with
a little bit of help from the runway shows of his pals at Prada, has
associated the look with a stylish firmness and a confident rejection of needless ornamentation.
Braces and Skinny Jeans
Did anyone notice that Converses – symbol of freethinking and youth – became red this summer?
Skinny jeans also became black, and girls studying
finance adopted the Brit-rocker style of many of the
young blokes, complete with the narrow, red, white
and blue braces.
R
eaders sometimes poke fun at the people appearing on the pages of Stylites, but, at the risk of sounding defensive, the
truth is that they are the most interesting and attractive Beijing pedestrians. The goal is usually to find people that
stand out rather than those that follow the trends or best represent a period. However, now that the hot months are
over, it seemed appropriate to review the trends that characterized Beijing as it enjoyed its moments in the sun. Uniqueness
and style remain important, but take a back seat to timeliness for this Stylites.

Androgyny Gets Chicer
Girls unafraid to look boyish is nothing new; until the ‘80s,
unisex dressing was a way of life for girls. But Li Yuchun made
it fashionable for young people to escape the confines of
cutesiness once again – her disciplines often looked contrived
with mullets and shapeless clothes. Recently, though,
sex-neutral looks on girls have become more interesting.
China
Every big brand from Adidas to Nike tried their version of the
China shirts for the Olympics and they all became tiresome
quickly. For those whose message is to be “I Love China but I
can still be cool,” the destination of choice remains Plastered for
T-shirts. Of course, those who value authenticity
and style can
always opt for a red silk jacket with big dragons.
Skater Girls
They’ve been growing in number. In Beijing, skating and
the styles that are such an important aspect of it were
more the province of men, but recently a number of girls
are doing the look well.

Nostalgia and the wardrobe of a
modern autumnal man

e struggled to look stylish while sweating bolts through the
summer. In winter, we stay in or bundle up. Spring is fraught
with tension – we dress to strut. Once the season for making
war, autumn is made for men, and it bears real sartorial fruits for our sex,
with clothes that are comfortable and have a sensitive feel.
Bring out the clothes with character – the ones that make us smile,
lingering on sweet memories. Wear high-quality, inherited clothing if
possible. Burn the floral and other prints with the fallen leaves, and turn
to textures like houndstooth, herringbone and bird’s eye. Autumn is for
hardy weaves and mature colors. We didn’t relish the thin fabrics of summer
anyway. Now the heavy stuff men love emerges: corduroy, tweed, worsted
wools, moleskin and flannels. Neutral tones – khaki, browns, grays and
beiges – are the meat of autumn’s palette, while muted rusts and maroons
are complements.
In keeping with this nostalgic season, the looks recall classic eras in
menswear; this is the time to visit the vintage shop. Styles from Great
Britain and New England match quiet introspection and schoolboy-like
erudition. In autumn, spend hours every day sitting under a tree struggling
through history tomes like Gibbon or the Spring and Autumn Annals. Such
pursuits call for a corduroy suit with leather buttons in brown or hunter
green – the trousers and top are perfect as separates – or perhaps a sturdy
tweed jacket. A cashmere jumper, easiest to match in beige or light gray,
will insulate against gales from the northwest.

Accessories are more distinguishing than flashy cuts, and a driving cap
or flat cap – called the “tractor cap” in China – has been a favorite for
centuries. A slim repp tie or checked wool and cashmere seem perfectly
Ivy League or Oxbridge. Scarves are the masters of this poetic season
and they can be linen and cotton blends in October, wool in November,
and cashmere in early December. Horizontal stripes in lively colors allude
to schooldays, but scarves are generally a good place to experiment. The
fi rst frost reminds us that forced introversion is approaching; coats will
be needed for gatherings beyond the home. A moleskin in camel or navy,
hitting just above the knee is good for mid-autumn, while the peacoat is
a staple for welcoming winter. Brown or burgundy footwear is choice and
brogues, the rage from Tokyo to London, really are a good investment.
Autumn is always Beijing’s best time. That melancholic kind of day,
when decay seems so romantic, can happen even in this most upbeat and
futuristic of cities.
