Being a part of this has been my pleasure and my privilege and I’m glad I could help. It has been incredible watching the new building go up. I’m very proud of the Sisters of Mercy because it certainly would have been easier to build this hospital in the county with a lot more land and room than to build it in the inner city. But they’ve always been committed to serving all the people in the city and I admire them for that. I thought Mercy couldn’t get better, but I’ve seen every year how it has grown and improved, and under the leadership of Tom Mullen and Sister Helen Amos it’s just fantastic. Using a variety of media, the nurses focused on the meaning of the different Caritas. After the project, David created a large painting (see opposite page) which incorporated many of the visual elements the nurses included in their own works. A Healing Presence in a Healing Environment Spirituality and Health at Mercy PICTURED ABOVE (left): Kristen Chavis, R.N., Kathleen Wagner (a retired Mercy nurse), and Violetta Ferguson, PSR; (right): Roshel Lemon-Howard, R.N. The Theory of Caring Over a year ago, the Nursing Division at Mercy adopted Jean Watson’s Theory of Caring as a way to nurture their caring profession. Jean Watson, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor of Nursing and Chair of Caring Science at the University of Colorado. Several of Mercy’s nurses have attended seminars led by her, read her many books, and even met her in person. They are inspired by her teachings in which spirituality is a fundamental theme of this relationship-centered theory of caring. In a world where modern health care relies on technology as much as personal touch, nurses often struggle The Ten Caritas The Ten Caritas form a major element of Jean Watson’s Theory of Caring. The word “Caritas” originates from the Greek vocabulary, meaning to cherish and to give special loving attention. Over several months, each Caritas listed below has been introduced to Mercy’s nursing staff, along with events and activities to illustrate their meaning. 1. Embrace altruistic values and practice loving kindness with self and others. 2. Instill faith and hope and honor others. 3. Be sensitive to self and others by nurturing individual beliefs and practices. 4. Develop “helping-trusting-caring” relationships. 5. Promote and accept positive and negative feelings as you authentically listen to another’s story. 6. Use creative scientific problem-solving methods for caring decision making. pa g e 8 to preserve their caring practice and their connection to each patient. Upholding Watson’s caring theory encourages nurses to practice the art of caring, to provide compassion to ease suffering, and to promote healing and dignity. Applying these caring values in nursing practice is not only essential to the health of each patient, but also fundamental for nurses to find meaning in their demanding work and personal lives. 7. Share teaching and learning that addresses individual needs and comprehension styles. 8. Create a healing environment for the physical and spiritual self which respects human dignity. 9. Assist with basic physical, emotional, and spiritual human needs. 10. Open to mystery and allow miracles to enter. Sulmasy, O.F.M., M.D., Ph.D. Kilbride-Clinton Professor of Medicine and Ethics in the Department of Medicine and Divinity School, University of Chicago Dr. Sulmasy is a Franciscan friar, general internist, and philosopher. His research interests encompass both theoretical and empirical investigations of the ethics of end-of-life decision-making, ethics education, and spirituality in medicine. His work in spirituality is focused primarily on the spiritual dimensions of the practice of medicine. He is the author of four books: The Healer’s Calling, Methods in Medical Ethics, The Rebirth of the Clinic, and A Balm for Gilead: Meditations on Spirituality and the Healing Arts. He also serves as editor-in-chief of the journal, Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics. This symposium is made possible, in part, through a generous grant from The Foundation for Spirituality and Medicine. Register to attend today! " To explore the eighth Caritas, to create a healing environment, nurses were invited to walk the complex patterns of a large, temporarily installed labyrinth. In a quiet room away from the hustle and bustle of the hospital, they could pause, reflect and still their minds. One nurse wrote about her experience before returning to her patients: “With the hectic pace we keep, this was refreshing. The peace I felt was overwhelming!” PICTURED RIGHT: Gita Sharma, R.N. Here are the stories of just a few of these remarkable people: Making a Difference Through their volunteer leadership and involvement with Mercy, members of The Advocate Society play a vital role in supporting the mission, values and philanthropic vision of Mercy Medical Center. By serving on Advisory Boards and fundraising event committees and undertaking other philanthropic activities, members of The Advocate Society advance the work of the Sisters of Mercy to provide excellent health care, with compassion and respect, to all who come to us for help. They are listed among Mercy’s most generous benefactors as members of the Circle of Mercy. Ann Widener and the Mercy in the City Committee Only the creative mind of grateful patient and Mercy volunteer, Ann Widener, could have come up with the concept of The Emporium – a popular feature of last October’s Mercy Magic gala at M&T Bank Stadium. Ann and her fellow committee members transformed a section of the gala’s floor space into a shoppers’ paradise. Party-goers browsed an enticing selection of items, all attractively displayed thanks to Ann’s talented eye for design. Proceeds from The Emporium benefited The Prevention and Research Center at Mercy. Polito, M.D. Each year, many of Mercy’s physicians generously participate in The Mercy Society by making gifts of $1,000 or more to the annual fund. They join other loyal and thoughtful friends of Mercy in providing financial support to help us heal and serve the people who come to us in need. Dr. Polito is one of several physicians who, since The Mercy Society was created in 1999, have gently encouraged their peers to become members of The Mercy Society. Thanks to his leadership, the number of Mercy’s physicians participating in this annual campaign continues to grow. All members of The Mercy Society will be recognized on the video donor wall to be unveiled in The Mary Catherine Bunting Center in December 2010. JoAnn DeCesaris and Beth Lennon Tragically, both of these remarkable young women lost a parent to cancer. In 2002, JoAnn’s father, Geaton DeCesaris, Jr., and Beth’s mother, Maureen Prout, were each diagnosed with cancer. Geaton passed away in 2006 and Maureen in 2007. In memory of their loved ones, Beth and JoAnn decided to join the effort to raise funds for cancer research, awareness and patient care. Together, they have raised over $770,000 for cancer-related causes. Mercy Medical Center is honored to be a beneficiary of their generosity, receiving grants for patient needs, research and state-of-the-art technology for the Institute for Cancer Care at Mercy. Beth and JoAnn are proud co-chairs of their 8th annual golf tournament, to be held on June 25, 2010 at the Twin Shields Golf Club in Dunkirk, Maryland. For information, please visit www.dpcancerfoundation.org. pa g e 11 Power over Pain What do you do when you have a headache or a sore muscle? The answer for most of us is to take a dose of over-the-counter medicine and wait for the discomfort to pass. What would happen if your pain just wouldn’t go away, no matter what you tried? For chronic pain sufferers this is a common question, and there’s no simple answer. At The Center for Interventional Pain Medicine at Mercy, led by David N. Maine, M.D., a special technique is providing much needed relief to patients. “Many of my patients have lived in terrible pain for months, if not years, and have tried all manner of treatments without good results. Thanks to new treatment options, it’s exciting and incredibly gratifying to know that we can help them get back to an enjoyable life.” One such patient is Keith Gayler, 39, a Rogers Forge resident who suffers from a genetic inflammatory disorder that causes arthritis. “Since I was a teenager, I had bouts of pain in my back but thought little of it. Then, about 18 months ago it was suddenly incredibly painful all the time,” he explains. He was soon diagnosed with the disorder and began his odyssey to find the best way to treat the pain. “If I had to rate my daily pain on a scale of 1 to 10, a typical day would have been at least a 7, if not higher. Taking prescription painkillers helped a bit but put me into a mental fog. Between the pain and the medications, I couldn't think, I couldn't read, and I certainly couldn't work.” After trying all kinds of treatment including medications, acupuncture, massage, meditation and more, Keith eventually found his way to Dr. Maine. “The first day I met him, he told me he was glad I had come to see him and that he thought he might be able to help me. And he did.” A variety of techniques were used to diagnose the source of Keith’s pain. “We determined Keith’s principal discomfort was arising from the sacroiliac joint,” explains Dr. Maine. These joints connect the bottom of the spine to the pelvis, and each one has several nerves and ligaments. Keith’s case was ideal for a procedure called radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the sacroiliac neural tissue, which we’ve been using at Mercy with incredible results,” he continues. “This is a pa g e 12 PICTURED ABOVE (from left): David N. Maine, M.D.; Keith Gayler fairly new technique and only a handful of doctors are using RFA to treat pain originating from the sacroiliac joint.” During the RFA procedure, a probe is inserted along the nerves that supply the painful joint. This is done under the guidance of live imaging. Once the probe is properly positioned, radiofrequency energy is delivered in a controlled manner to disrupt the nerves related to the pain of the sacroiliac joint. “About 70% of patients who are treated with RFA for sacroiliac joint pain respond very well,” says Dr. Maine. “It can provide long-term results for patients like Keith, who have a chronic condition.” “Radiofrequency ablation helped get my life back,” Keith says. “Not all that long ago, I wondered whether my life would be livable. With help from Dr. Maine, it is. Now, I can focus on healing, getting back to work and doing all the things I love. And more importantly, I can help look after my newborn twins. This is truly a time to celebrate and be thankful.” Worthington Personal Physicians Expands Karen Minor, CRNP with Drs. By doing so, we celebrate not only the compassionate care our physicians provide to their patients, but their commitment to the mission and values of the Sisters of Mercy. Hundreds of patients and friends of Mercy accepted this invitation, collectively honoring nearly 100 of Mercy’s doctors.
