Annual Report - Education Through Music
Education Through Music-Los Angeles 2013-2014 Annual Report September 1, 2013 through August 31, 2014 In-School Music Education Programs Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA) expanded its inschool music programs for underserved student populations with the mission to provide and promote the integration of music into the curricula of disadvantaged schools in order to enhance students’ academic performance and creative and general development. ETM-LA provided 45-minute weekly music classes at each of our partner schools on a yearlong basis with a variety of music disciplines– including violin, cello, guitar, recorder, general music, and chorus. The programs at each school were tailored to meet the needs of each population based on the vision of the Principal with guidance from ETM-LA. Students at all partner schools performed in two concerts to showcase their musical learning in the Fall and Spring semesters. Students visit Sonic Fuel Studios and participate in a recording session in partnership with One Voice. T o support the quality of instruction in the classroom and teaching artists’ ability to educate children, ETM-LA provided ongoing mentorship and evaluation of its music teachers by multiple staff (Executive Director, Program Director, and other veteran teachers). In September 2013, ETM-LA held its weeklong intensive Summer Training Institute for its new and returning music teachers and guest teaching artists from other arts organizations. The institute focused on topics including Lesson Planning, Classroom Management, Integration, Creative Strategies, Assessment of Student Learning, Concert Preparation and Presentation, Singing Technique, Strings Methods, Teaching Copyright, and Pedagogy (Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, Suzuki, et al.). ETM-LA was grateful to have experts in the music education fields facilitate including Program Director Ryan Rowles, Christine DeMore (Choral Director, David Starr Jordan Middle School), and ETM Program Director Pete Pauliks. ETM-LA held additional workshops throughout the year on relevant topics such as Working with Student Populations with Special Needs, Music Technology, Student Assessment, and Songwriting and Arranging. Music to me is water and a plant. A plant needs water to grow, but without water it won’t grow. Music is my water and I am the plant. “ “ Natalie, Guardian Angel School P rofessional development for academic teachers was held throughout the year through their participation in the music classes and learning alongside their students. By joining the music learning, teachers explore and develop: • Thinking skills and content areas common to music and other academic subjects that can support learning, • Value of teaching music inside and outside the academic classroom, and • Coordination of instruction to reinforce the identified skills and content. Recent Program Accomplishments • September 2013 – ETM-LA begins new partnerships with Guardian Angel School, KIPP Iluminar Academy, and Washington Elementary. • January 2014 - Executive Director Victoria Lanier joins a summit of arts leaders with Mayor Eric Garcetti on a convening of how to best maintain the arts in Los Angeles. • January 2014 – Over twenty principals and school leaders gather to share and learn best practices on building sustainable music programs as part of ETM-LA’s 5th Annual Principals Leadership Conference. • June 2014 – Executive Director Victoria Lanier speaks about Music Education as a guest panelist at Disney’s IDEATION Summit. • ETM-LA is nominated for an LA Business Journal Non-Profit Award • August 2014 – ETM-LA music teachers participate in the ETM Training institute at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. Community Partnerships & Engagement ETM-LA continues to build capacity among school and community members to sustain programs for the future; at each school, ETM-LA collaborates with the PTA to host a community concert to raise awareness and support for the program. ETM-LA and LA’s Best of the Mayor’s Office continued programming afterschool as further enrichment to provide 6 hours of musical training and orchestra at Castelar and El Dorado Elementary Schools. ETMLA continued partnerships with YOLA (LA Philharmonic’s Youth Orchestra Los Angeles initiative) and other arts organizations to provide additional opportunities. In December 2013, we celebrated our 8th Year Anniversary with a Benefit Gala at the Skirball Cultural Center honoring legendary Academy-Award Winning Composer John Debney and Veteran Music Teacher Christine DeMore, featuring performances by Ed Helms (Actor, The Office), Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, Lisbeth Scott (Passion of the Christ), Mike Watts, Steve Erdody, Chris Bleth, David Starr Jordan Middle School students, and Education Through Music-LA music students. ETM-LA has been fortunate to receive the support of many local artists and groups who host concerts and events to raise awareness for music education. Such events have included: March 2014 – ETM-LA celebrates Music in Our Schools Month (National Association for Music Education) and Read Across America Day (National Education Association) by pairing accomplished artists with partner schools. Notable guests include American Songwriter Arthur Hamilton (“Cry Me a River”), TV/Film Composer Dan Foliart (Happy Days), writer Marc Sedaka (Huckabee, Dinosaur Pet), and children’s book author Alecia Spendlove (Alexandra Rain). April 2014 – 122 top students from partner schools perform in concert at ETM-LA’s 4th Annual Music Unites the World Festival. Students received coaching by top artists and educators – Christophe Beck (Film Composer, Frozen, The Muppets), Evelyn Halus (Voice Coach of Jennifer Lopez, Neil Patrick Harris), and Tim Davies (arranger, artist Cee Lo Green.) Christophe Beck visits students at Providencia Elementary. “I have learned so many fun and awesome songs in music class. Every time I go to music class I am excited to know that I will learn something new.” Viviana, El Dorado Elementary May 2014– Actor and Cellist Dermot Mulroney (Actor, My Best Friend’s Wedding, August: Osage County), Violinist Bing Wang (Associate Concertmaster, Los Angeles Philharmonic), and Pianist Joanne Pearce Martin (Los Angeles Philharmonic) teamed up with ETM-LA by performing at our 4th Annual Keep the Music Playing Benefit held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. An audience of over 250 including ETM-LA board members, teachers, school parents and children gathered at the beautiful hall. The concert also featured students from ETM-LA Partner Schools Castelar and Dorris Place Elementary, and Composer Blake Neely as a presenter. May 2014 – Disney’s Frozen Composer Christophe Beck visits students at Providencia Elementary and provides the students an inside look into the world of a film composer. These partnerships with community members expand the reach and depth of ETM-LA’s mission so more children’s lives can be positively impacted by music. Organizational Developments & Plans For The Future ETM-LA welcomed three new board members, John Dennis, Yukiko Kojima, and Ray Yee. We increased our music teacher staff to serve three more partner schools: Guardian Angel School, KIPP Iluminar Academy, and Washington Elementary. This broadened our reach from two to four school districts, as we now have partnerships with schools in Los Angeles, Future plans include reaching more students and strengthening ETM-LA’s visibility and marketing to be able to continue bringing music instruction to underserved Los Angeles children and communities.
