So Stuart McIntyre and he engaged the services of professional counsellors, sourced funding and began one of the first Men’s Behavior Change programs to re-educate perpetrators of domestic violence. The club funded and ran the program for seven years before transferring it to Lifeworks for ongoing management. Domestic violence is one of Australia’s biggest social problems. • 1 of 4 families suffer • Greatest cause of injury and death for women 15 to 44 • Leading cause of youth homelessness • A 70% chance that a child exposed to domestic violence will repeat it as an adult. Over the last five years, the number of incidents reported to the Victoria Police increased from 31,660 to 50,382 (63%). Unfortunately these statistics are reported incidents and therefore only the tip of the iceberg. In 2009 David Smyth challenged the Club either to get bigger in this space or get out. The Club decided to get bigger, and Violence Free Families was formed, an organisation whose primary objective is the reduction of family violence. VFF has now started three quite large and pioneering initiatives, using the services of highly qualified people from the sector: 1. We are developing the world’s first online interactive Men’s Behavior Change Program. The program is for men who can’t access a face to face program, e.g. rural dwellers, shift workers, local program full etc. (there are very few programs outside the capital cities). Investigations and preparations took two years, and the consortium created for the project has spent a further nine months developing the new program. 2. A Long Term Study into Men’s Behaviour Change Programs that aims to improve their effectiveness by comparing the outcomes of different types of program in the short and long term. The aims of this project were endorsed by a Commonwealth Government survey of all agencies in Australia providing MBC programs. The study topics proved to be their top priorities and VFF received a $100,000 Commonwealth grant. Monash University is carrying it out. Preliminary results indicate that it will lead to a fundamental re-assessment of programs in all States. $349,000 has been raised for the research and an additional $150,000 is required to complete this project, in three years’ time. 3. A Youth Education Program to deliver relationships education to primary school children nationwide is under negotiation. If we can teach the children about respectful relationships, then hopefully, they will not repeat what they witness at home. “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men” - F. Douglas This project is being championed by the Rotary Club of Melbourne and funded by the Rotary Club of Balwyn North. What VFF is doing is very much at the leading edge, and when complete, will be of significant benefit to the community. Not just to our local community, not just at a State level, not just at a national level, but at international level, and our club has every reason to be proud of its initiative. Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) Over the last 10 years the club has sent teams of Rotarians to many parts of Asia and the Pacific. WESTERN SAMOA Two teams visited Western Samoa. The first helped to build a school and the second laid four concrete slabs and erected water tanks. VANUATU In Vanuatu, the team laid a concrete slab to extend a hospital. PAPUA NEW GUINEA The trip to PNG renovated a run-down school. continued page 4 Thinking of Cruising? No. 30112 APT008_SA 3 SERGEANT’S SESSION Sgt Geoff Shaw * Sgt Geoff: When the Editor saw Sgt Geoff with his note book he said “You’re not Alan Jarrott!” and the Sarg agreed he wasn’t as he had swapped with Alan last week but....... Sarg then said he had a lot in common with Alan. Their footy careers are well behind them (Geoff didn’t have one), both are on the Sergeant’s panel and they are both very good looking!! - Sarg paid a $2 fine for that remark; * Eric Barr, Dale Hoy, Geoff Bentley & Des Thomas: Definition of an economist: sees something working in practice and wonders if it will work in theory. All members mentioned above were at a NAB breakfast with Jim Hoy last week where an economist was speaking who was really good; * Noel Williams: He wasn’t at that function but its never too late to learn something; * Anyone who doesn’t work for Qantas: They haven’t been retrenched last week so put in a fine - $1; * All those who own Qantas shares or FF points: Admit it - they were OK once. Asked to put in another dollar whilst they can afford it; * Melbourne supporters & if your footy team has won in the last 18 days: For once Richmond supporters can keep their money in their pockets; * Bob Challis: Sarg asked how he was feeling. Had a late night and missed 7.45am meeting at White Rabbit; * Feb Fast: Anyone who wasn’t drinking alcohol last week but had fallen off the wagon last meeting; * Golfers off to the Peninsula last Friday: Fine should be double but the Saturday game has been stuffed up so an extra fine for Eric Barr; * Marcus Bastiaan: Many of the members live in Goldstein. The Libs have a committee which runs the branch. They elected a new member of that committee, Ian Mence’s candidate, by a big margin. Yes it was Marcus; * PP Ian Mence: The heavies at State level are trying to overturn it so $1 fine for PP Ian Mence for not squaring off before hand; * Bulletin Editor: On photo page 3 of last Bulletin a photo of a boat had Pisces on it which was the current star sign for Feb. Sarg expects a photo every month now showing star sign on the back of a boat. Darren Donnellan took the photo and he now knows what he must do; * Phil Mellett - non fine: Update on his 3 dented cars. All booked in, all insurance jobs and Phil assured the Sarg he wasn’t driving any of them. Not fined as he paid last week; * PDG John King: At GSE dinners the Germans up and entertained with singing and as the song ended, up piped a voice “Well that was OK for a start. Maybe they’ll be better on the next one”. That was PDG John King; * Dress Code Violations: When the Sarg joined Rotary it was shirt and tie and black pants. John Doyle and speaker Barry Hickman fined for wearing jeans; * Eric Barr: Bought a bottle of wine to a friends place and it was very nice. With that quality of wine you can either buy the wine or a small car; * Alan Pinkus - non fine: Warning to us all: Alan sold his business recently and sold his house and downsized. When 2 removal trucks arrived at his new apartment he couldn’t fit everything in. The electrician couldn’t get passed the boxes in the bedroom to put in a new powerpoint. Moral of this story: downsize years before you move! 4 Barry Hickman - (RAWCS) continued from page 2 EAST TIMOR Four teams have visited East Timor. Three helped to build two new schools and the fourth installed a children’s playground. The materials came from recycled buildings from the Bendigo region, facilitated by the Bendigo, Kyneton and Eaglehawk clubs and the Bendigo council funded the shipping. CAMBODIA Working in the village of Bossala was an inspirational project. It will have far-reaching effects. When a Cambodian man named Rithy Lay first introduced Rotary to the village of Bossala, the villagers were in dire straits. Their only water source during the dry season was a river that was contaminated with arsenic; hygiene was poor, cholera and typhoid were rife, and many villagers were dying of starvation. With funds from Rotary clubs, a District grant and personal Rotarian donations, the village now has three dams for fish farming, 6 x 5000 litre water tanks to get them through the dry period, 25 water urns, 20 solar moonlights, a two-bay Asian toilet, 3,000 fish, 20 mango trees and a variety of vegetable seeds for crops. The villagers now produce enough to eat, and some to sell. Cholera and typhoid have been eradicated and the villagers have a brighter future. A number of clubs from District 9800 have come together to expand the work done in Bossala to neighbouring villages and we are currently awaiting an International grant from Rotary. CONCLUSION: These achievements through RAWCS, and in family violence, demonstrate what can be achieved when our club leads the way and mobilises the resources of the wider Rotary network. These projects will make a real difference in the community. At the end of Barry’s talk PP Peter Sherman stood up and asked us to recognise the wonderful work that Gerhard Sommer had done in service overseas especially Cambodia for which he was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow. PRESIDENT’S REPORT SECRETARY’S ANNOUNCEMENTS Presented by President Pat Kearns Presented by Secretary Bill Howley Pres Pat welcomed all to the meeting and said that Prof Kate Auty was our Speaker last week. Kate talked to us in a very dedicated and detailed way (see the Bulletin article last week). Her talk resulted in many questions from the floor. Pat said it was also good to see Joanne Stewart from Swim Vietnam and that we were proud to present Joanne with a cheque for $15,000. This will be a big help and go towards teaching children to swim in Vietnam and save lives. Pat then introduced his Head Table which included: Chairman Dale Hoy, Special Guest Barry Hickman (Speaker), Secretary Bill Howley and Sergeant Geoff Shaw. Pat the officially welcomed the Guest Speaker, our own Barry Hickman and welcomed guests of members and visiting Rotarians. Dr John Sherman (PP Ivan Vojlay) and Jim Clarke, Rotary Club of Marlow UK (Graeme Watson). Presidential Announcements: In the Bulletin it mentioned the special memorial service for Royce Abbey that was to be held at the Melbourne Town Hall 28 February at 2.30pm. Also on page 8 was the DG Ross Butterworth’s message on Royce’s passing. Royce was a leader mentor and friend of many distinguished Rotarians. There’s a new name for Mercedes-Benz on Nepean Highway. • Geoff Cunningham: Spoke about the Lawn Bowls Day at the West Brighton Club and said it was one the great fellowship events of the year. Its on Sunday 16 March starting at 10.30am. You will need to book with either Brendan Kierce of Geoff and you can now book online on the website. There will be a break for lunch at 12.30pm and then the finals will be played. • PP Paul Nicholson: With the Sportsman’s Night coming up on 13 March, Paul impressed upon us to consider coming along. With the great line up of celebrities (see advert back cover) that we have booked for the night it should be a great event. Paul wanted us to get a group together of friends and partners and take a table. Paul said that at the Sportsman’s night meeting the previous night that he and Brett had decided to take a corporate table between them and he hoped that others would follow their lead. Last Week’s Raffle PP Brett Parkin was helped by the David ‘Davina’ Efron in last week’s raffle and there were 3 bottles of white wine on offer. The winners were: 1. Wayne Styles 2. Dr John Sherman 3. IVAN’S HACKERS Welcome to all visiting Rotarians & Guests The Club meets Thursdays at 6pm for 6.30pm at Milanos Hotel, The Esplanade, Brighton Beach. Rotary Grace “For good food, good fellowship and the privilege of service, we give you thanks O Lord.” Rotary Toast “To Australia, The Queen of Australia, Rotary International & the Rotary Club of Brighton.” Highlights - 1 MARCH 2014 Although many Hackers were away at Moonah Links for the weekend 7 Hackers played on what is the start of the Hackers year (1st March to 1st March). Ron started very well with 2 pars, a birdie and winning Nearest The Pin in the 1st 4 holes, but after he told how well he was playing he soon fell away. Graeme Wallace was star of the day winning the Pregame Putting competition, the Long Drive, Best Off The Stick and sharing Handicap honors with Arthur and Ron. Early bunker issues and unplayable balls saw Ian’s score revert to more normal after his last weeks personal best. Well known In The Water Club members Graeme, Arthur and James all successfully cleared the dam. Shot of the day was Arthur’s magnificent 250m drive on the last hole which helped him get an easy par. Statistics for the past year show 45 players played a total 507 games over 50 weeks. Average handicap score was 33.35 (seems handicaps are about right) and the off the stick average was 47 strokes.
