Our thanks to First Bank & Trust East Texas for being the title sponsor for the second year and to the Lufkin Convention and Visitor’s Bureau for their efforts and support in bringing professional golf to Crown Colony Country Club and Lufkin! There was a significant increase in the number of professionals this year with 116 players competing. We even had players from South America and Australia! We hope that you were able to come out and watch some of these prolific players in action. A special thank you to all of our members who volunteered their time to help make this tournament such a first class event! We also want to thank all of the other sponsors who supported the tournament and participated in the Pro-Am. $10,000 was raised for the LISD Education Foundation and that would not have been possible without the support and enthusiasm of our sponsors, our club members and the Lufkin community. Please see page 12 of this edition of Leisure for a complete list of tournament sponsors. We hope that you will take the time to personally thank these folks for their support whenever you see them around town! Your Board of Directors has approved for us to move forward on a three-year agreement with the Adams Pro Tour and we are very excited about the possibility of making subsequent tournaments even bigger and better than the first two years have been! This has been a busy summer at the Club! The recently redecorated Pool Pavilion has more families than ever coming out to enjoy the pool. A flat screen television and a new Ping Pong table have been added for the enjoyment of children of all ages and the water volleyball net is in place. This weekend (July 29 – 31) is the perfect time to come out and see the new additions. There will be NO GUEST FEES charged this weekend! A giant Slip ‘N Slide with a splash pool and a Bounce House are scheduled and there will be an old fashioned Ice Cream & Watermelon Social on Sunday afternoon. Bring your friends and neighbors out to experience the excitement at Crown Colony! There are special membership offers that could benefit both you and your friends! Crown Colony is famous for great golf events and this summer has been spectacular. Stephen Tucker and his crew have the course in phenomenal condition! In addition to the Adams Tour event, the Club has also hosted the Men’s Member Guest Tournament and the “Dog Days of Summer” tournament to benefit the Humane Society in June and in July there were a record number of participants in the John Outlaw Memorial Tournament to raise funding for the Outlaw Foundation. A special thanks to Jeff Todd and Gary Ivins for their leadership in growing this worthwhile event! Cory Ryan’s Junior Golf program continues to grow and Crown Colony has a junior team that competes against other clubs. Please contact Cory if you are interested in getting your child involved in golf – a game you can enjoy for an entire lifetime! A small but enthusiastic crowd was entertained by “Elvis” on Friday, July 15th. David Allen’s renditions of some of Elvis’ greatest hits had the audience rocking in the aisles! We are planning to have David return for a Valentine’s Day concert in 2017. Further details will be available in future editions of the Leisure. Whether you are planning to travel before the kiddos head back to school or are looking to enjoy a “staycation” here at the Club, have a safe and happy end to “Summer 2016”! See you at the Club! LGA News By Mickey Benton LGA Flag Day after play, not pictured: Joan Meyer and Connie Kennedy The flag tournament on July 7 was played in the usual hot, muggy, conditions, but ten ladies were there to continue celebrating the red, white, and blue. Patti Griffith won the prize for the best decorated cart. It was bedecked with all types of ribbons and bows, and was a perfect tribute to the stars and stripes. Closest to the pin winner on #4 was Connie Kennedy and #12 was Mary Virginia Casper. There was a 3-way tie for the winners of the day. Flags were planted at various locations on #18, depending where their strokes ran out. Winners were Mary Virginia Casper, Susan Laws, and Mickey Benton. It was a fun way to change up the regular play days. Susan said she was going to frame her prize money, because it was the first time she had ever won anything. Qualifiers for the Babe of Babes thru June are: Cheryl Faircloth, Mary Virginia Casper, Joan Meyer, Julie Zeagler, Connie Kennedy, Cindy Adler, Jan Kingham, Gayle Brent, Donna Hill, and Mickey Benton. Qualifying is held on the 4th Thursday of each month, unless otherwise noted, through October. Final Babe of Babes tournament will be held on November 3, with all the qualifiers playing for the honor of being named la di da 2016 “Babe of Babes” If you haven’t qualified yet, there is still time. The $5.00 entry fee each month is donated to the American Cancer Society for their continuing efforts in bringing awareness and early detection and successful treatment of breast cancer. The children of Natasha and Tim Stamp recently competed in the Drive, Chip, and Putt competition at the Timber Creek Golf Club in Kingwood. Unfortunately, they did not qualify for regionals, but Mom said they did enjoy themselves and know they will have to work harder to get better. In the girls division, Reagan, 9, didn’t do well in the drive portion. She put two OB and got two XX’s. This affected her play in the other two competitions, but she just said “wait till next year”. In the boys division, George, 7, placed 1st in putting. In the girls division, Madison, 6, placed 3rd in chipping. Congratulations to the three of you. The Adams Pro Tour guys held a clinic for the ladies on Tuesday, July 12, from 9 - 10 a.m. They covered driving, chipping, putting, and even some bunker play. There were lots of questions posed by the ladies, and the guys were very helpful with their explanations. Everyone left the practice with a bit more knowledge about the game of golf and more insight about what contributes to understanding the game. Thanks to Ben for arranging this event for us, and thanks to the guys who took time away from their practice to share their knowledge with us. Hannah Arnold was spotted playing during the tournament, and one of the players remarked that he heard there was a girl playing. Yes, there was a girl playing, and it was Hannah. She was playing as a marker, and she played from the same tees as the guys (blue) Hannah has graduated from Texas Tech and has plans to play on the pro tour. She has played in one LPGA event already. Don’t know all the particulars, but we wish her well and much success along the way. Continue to hydrate, stay cool, if possible. See you on the course! please join us to celebrate THE 34th la di da Ladies Invitational Golf Tournament October 17-19, 2016 3 By Ben Burns, PGA Head Pro This month we have a new event, the 2-man 3 club tournament, August 13th. This will be 2 man teams that each player will pick 3 clubs they will use to play a full 18 holes of golf. The format will be best ball. It should be fun to see who can use their imagination to get around the course with just 3 clubs. Signups should be out soon. Also this month on August 27th we will have our Couples night scramble. This will be 4 person teams playing 9 holes with glow in the dark balls. Get your friends together to come have some great fun. The MGA challenge cup qualifying is thru 3 events of 5 this year. In each of these you would receive points for coming in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or just for participating. Then at the end of the season we have a tournament we call The Challenge Cup. If you are in the top five at the end of the season you will receive free entry into The Challenge Cup. We would love to help by answering any questions about any particular event. Please let us know we want everyone to have a place to participate. See the leaders below: Challenge Cup Leaders 1st Jeff Portwood 30 2nd John Kennedy 20 3rd John Portwood 13 Tie 4th Rocky Haney 12 Trey Schroeder 12 Birdies for Kids: On behalf of Cory and myself, we are pleased to let you know that we are teaming up to again participate in the Birdies for Kids Fundraiser this summer. Thank you for supporting our fundraising efforts in the past. Birdies for Kids was started by some Australian golf professionals in North Texas 13 years ago and was expanded recently in an effort to make an even greater impact in our communities. This year’s East Texas fundraiser will take place on August 15 at Hollytree in Tyler. 100% of all proceeds raised will benefit the Northern Texas PGA Junior Golf Foundation’s Growth of the Game initiatives and the Lufkin ISD Foundation. We will each be playing 72-holes in one day. Our goal is to make as many birdies and eagles as possible. We are seeking pledges from individuals and companies for every birdie and eagle that we collectively make. We will be playing from the blue tees and collectively we hope to make between 15-25 birdies during the day. 4 If you choose to support us, once the fundraiser is played, we will inform you of the total number of birdies and eagles that we made and the NTPGA Junior Golf Ben’s Golf News Foundation will send you an invoice for your pledge. Your donation is 100% tax deductible. Should you have questions, please call either Cory or myself or stop by the golf shop. Cory did an outstanding job on the golf side educating the kids on the rules and play of golf as well as fun, creative teaching methods. Rolondo Solazar assisted me again on the tennis side as we used the “ROGY” method or Red, Orange, Green, Yellow ball adaptive ball bounce and court size to skill and age. Kristina Johnson taught etiquette with creative hands on ideas that covered modern situations from cell phone use, to proper place settings. Our “Outstanding Camper” for the week was John David Stover. Congrats to John David and all the other wonderful campers on a great week at camp! Ladies, it’s time to mark your calendars and start thinking Fall League tennis!
