Brazil offers tourists plenty of tour options, namely those related to nature, adventure, history and culture. The country has continental proportions and therefore its different regions have many variations in climate, landscape and vegetation. Each one of those requires specific care for health. www.saude.gov.br/viajante 4 How is Brazil taking care of tourists`health PREPARATIONS FOR THE TRIP General precautions For a safe and healthy stay in Brazil, inquire in advance about your destinations within the country, since there are different environments and climate, foods and cultural behaviors; When deciding your itinerary, plan activities of interest and take preventive health measures; Get acquainted with your destination. Find out whether there is a risk for diseases and need for vaccination or other preventive measures; Avoid traveling when sick; 5 Ministry of Health of Brazil See your doctor, preferably between 4 and 8 weeks before your trip to inform your travel plans. Ask for guidance on preventive care to protect you against disease and injuries; You may have difficulty to find your usual prescription medications during your trip. Seek your doctor’s advice as to which medications and in what quantity you should take during your trip, include them in your hand luggage; Securely pack drugs according to the manufacturer’s recommendation along with the original package and leaflet; Eat well before traveling. Eat what you are used to, avoiding fatty foods, since they can cause discomfort during the trip; 6 How is Brazil taking care of tourists`health Carry with you your identification, preferably in English and Portuguese, with personal contact information, blood type, whether you have allergies, diabetes or other conditions that may require special care; Follow the airlines’ rules on carrying objects and liquids; If you feel changes in your health conditions during the trip, please inform the crew; Every pregnant woman should visit her doctor before traveling, as she could be subject to risks and traveling may affect her safety and comfort; Consult the transportation company’s specific guidelines for pregnant women before traveling. 7 Ministry of Health of Brazil Vaccinations Brazil does not require the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis for entry; Make sure that your routine immunization is up to date, according to the recommendations of your country, since it is an effective and safe measure for the prevention of several diseases; Although there are no cases of measles and rubella in Brazil, these diseases are present in other countries. Therefore, it is recommended to be vaccinated against them; While getting ready for the trip you have a good opportunity to check the vaccinations of infants, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. 8 How is Brazil taking care of tourists`health Prevention against yellow fever Prevent yellow fever by getting a vaccine 10 days before visiting forest areas or practicing ecological or rural tourism. Prevention against malaria Before traveling, check the areas which reported malaria cases through the year (endemic or malaria transmission area) (only in portuguese), link <http://portalsaude.saude.gov.br/images/pdf/2014/fevereiro/19/Mapa-deareas-de-risco-para-malaria.pdf>. 9 Ministry of Health of Brazil In Brazil, transmission is concentrated in the Amazon region, comprising the States of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins; In areas where there is malaria transmission, it is essential that the traveler knows the period of greatest activity of malaria vector mosquitoes, from sunset to dawn; Use light-colored clothes with long sleeves during high exposure activities; Apply repellent to exposed areas of your skin according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Foreign tourists which have health problems can seek treatment in the emergency care network of the Brazilian National Health System (SUS) through the following services: 12 How is Brazil taking care of tourists`health u Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU 192) SAMU works 24 hours every day of the week and the Access is by the phone number 192. It is a free of charge call and may be made from any telephone, land line or local cellphone. SAMU performs urgency and emergency calls by ambulance at any place: home, workplace and on the streets. The team has physicians, nurses and paramedics, which take care of trauma, clinical, pediatric, surgical, gynecologicalobstetric and mental health urgencies of the population. 13 Ministry of Health of Brazil When to call SAMU? . . . . . . . . . . . . 14 In the event of cardio-respiratory problems; In the event of exogenous intoxication; In the event of severe burns; In the event of abuse; In cases of labor or delivery with maternal or fetal death risk; In the event of suicide attempts; In the event of hypertensive crises; When there are accidents / trauma with victims; In an event of drowning; In an event of electric shocks; In accidents with hazardous / toxic products; In the inter-hospital transfer of patients at risk of death. The service operates 24/7 with health teams serving the occurrences of a traumatic, clinical, pediatric, surgical, gynecological and mental health nature. The call is toll-free. DISQUE-INTOXICAÇÃO - Questions and reports related to intoxications dial 0800 7226001 A 24/7 service for guidance and receipt of reports related to intoxications. The call is toll-free. ANVISA - National Health Surveillance Agency dial 0800 6429782 Communication channel for reports, complaints and requests regarding health surveillance. It works Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The call is toll-free. 16 How is Brazil taking care of tourists`health Emergency service may be requested by phone. See numbers below: ANAC - National Civil Aviation Agency dial 0800 725 4445 A service intended for reports, complaints, criticisms, compliments or suggestions about the provision of airport services under the competence of ANAC and its agents. It works 24/7 and the call is toll-free. ANTT - National Land Transportation Agency dial 166 A service intended for reports, complaints, criticisms, compliments or suggestions about the provision of land services under the competence of ANTT and its agents. It works 24/7 and the call is toll-free. ANTAQ - National Waterway Transportation Agency dial 0800 644 5001 A service intended for reports, complaints, criticisms, compliments or suggestions about the provision of waterway services under the competence of ANTAQ and its agents. . It works Monday through Friday from 8h to 18h. 17 Ministry of Health of Brazil Basic precautions during your travel Brazil is a tropical country. The drinking lots of liquids is recommended to travelers in order to avoid dehydration; Use comfortable clothes and proper footwear. These provide safety and protect against sprains, insect bites and accidents with poisonous animals; Dress in appropriate clothing and use a hat or cap and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Avoid direct exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Get your suntan early in the morning or later in the afternoon; Use sunscreen with a protection factor suitable for the color of your skin, according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Even in cooler places, your skin should be protected from sunlight; Use insect repellent whenever necessary; 18 How is Brazil taking care of tourists`health Wash your hands with soap and water during the day, especially before eating, after using public transportation, washrooms, visiting crowded markets or other places. Eat healthy foods and drinks Avoid eating food in poor hygiene, preparation and packaging; Prefer foods that are low in sugars, fats and salt; Drink plenty of liquids, preferably water or juice; Avoid raw or undercooked food, especially seafood; Packaged food should be labeled to identify the producer, the expiration date and the packaging must be properly sealed; 19 Ministry of Health of Brazil During rural tours, prefer foods that can be kept unrefrigerated and which would not spoil in warm weather; Extra care is required with dehydration if you have diarrhea and vomiting. An intake of oral rehydration salts is recommended, which is provided free of charge by the Brazilian National Health System, or other salt solutions of the kind. Sports drinks do not properly replace the losses of salts and should not be used for the treatment of diarrhea. For more information on nutritional care, see recommendations of the World Health Organization: <www.who.int>. 20 How is Brazil taking care of tourists`health Protect yourself against insect bites Enquire about the occurrence of malaria, dengue, yellow fever and other diseases that can be transmitted by mosquitoes. The risk of infection by these diseases is reduced if insect bites are avoided. Please note the following recommendations: Stay in places which have protective screens on doors and windows, especially when away from the capital and major cities, or take the mosquito netting /curtains with you; In ecotourism tours, use clothing to protect your body against insect bites and ticks, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants and closed shoes; Apply repellent to exposed areas of your skin according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It is not recommended to use repellent on children less than two years old without medical advice; 21 Ministry of Health of Brazil Against bites or other types of accidents with animals In case of accidental contact, bite or scratch by mammals (dog, cat, bat, or any wild animal), wash the affected area with soap and water and seek medical attention immediately; If you have accidents with venomous animals (scorpions, snakes, spiders, bees and caterpillars), do not perform homemade procedures and seek a local public health service immediately. During the rescue operation, move as little as possible. The affected limb must be placed in a higher position in relation to the body and the bite area can only be washed with soap and water; In cases of accidents with jellyfish and caravels, a cold sea water (do not use fresh water) should be applied. Avoid rubbing the affected area or applying vinegar dressing; 22 How is Brazil taking care of tourists`health Avoid direct contact with live or dead animals, and, above all, do not handle these animals, however harmless they may seem; Avoid walking barefoot in forests or plantation areas. Preferably, use pants and long boots or boots with leggings (knee-high protection); In the specific case of spiders and scorpions, inspect clothing and shoes before wearing them, or covers and towels before using them; While on trails or nature walks, carefully examine the places you lean on (trees, rocks); Beware of bees and wasps. Preventive measures against communicable respiratory-diseases Wash your hands with soap and water before meals, after touching your eyes, mouth and nose, and after coughing, sneezing or using the toilet; When coughing or sneezing, cover your nose and mouth with, preferably, single-use tissue. If not, avoid sneezing in your hands. It is recommended to sneeze on the forearm near the elbow; 25 Ministry of Health of Brazil Sick individuals should rest, eat a balanced diet, increase fluid intake and avoid crowds and indoors; Keep your environments ventilated; Always be aware of serious respiratory symptoms and seek immediate medical care. Accidental intoxications In Brazil, the main chemicals that result in poisoning by accidental exposure are medicines, disinfectants, drug abuse, industrial chemicals and agricultural pesticides. So keep in a safe place out of reach of children: drugs, liquid soaps, shampoos, conditioners, perfumes, powders and repellents; 26 How is Brazil taking care of tourists`health In case of exposure to these products, and if you do not feel well, have an allergy or discomfort after using your repellent, ask for guidance from the intoxication hotline (0800-722-6001). The call is toll-free anywhere in the country. Violence prevention In the case of sexual violence, a health unit should be sought as soon as possible, so that prevention and care are adopted in accordance with the Technical Standard of the Ministry of Health; All forms of violence against children, adolescents, women and elderly are of compulsory notification by public and private health services in Brazil; For urgency care due to accidents, violence or clinical emergencies, the emergency service can be activated by dialing 192 - SAMU (Service Mobile Emergency Care); 27 Ministry of Health of Brazil If you know of a case of sexual exploitation of children and adolescents, communicate it through by dialing 100 (Dial Human Rights) or dialing 190 (Military Police); You can also activate the Dial 180 to inform or report situations of violence against women; The consumption of alcohol in excess is a major risk factor for the occurrence of violence, so the traveler should drink moderately and respectfully; Remember: if you drink, do not drive.
