Blue Growth Activities
Who are we ?
• The European Technology Platform WATERBORNE is a
forum where all stakeholders from the waterborne sector
(sea & inland) define and share a common Vision a
Strategic Research Agenda, driving the necessary
innovation efforts forward.
• In order to identify research priorities, the
WATERBORNETP is structured in two pillars:
– Blue Growth with the “Working Group Blue Growth” supporting
the Development of Industrial Activities at Sea,
– Transport with the Vessel for the Future Association

SETTING THE SCENE
Oceans are planet’s future
• New challenges are raised by the
scarcity of resources and land
available,
• Oceans are recognised to be the
only way to fulfil mankind’s growing
needs for food, energy, water, etc.
• This is prompting the need to
develop
significantly
industrial
activities at sea.
• This is similar to the space odyssey
in the second half of the 20th century
(Sea the Outer Space)
A momentum
• Since 2012, Blue Growth is high up in the European
Commission and Parliament agenda.
– Communication of the EC on Blue Growth in 2012
– Creation of a Blue Unit in charge of dealing with Blue Growth
topics with dedicated budget
– Report on Blue Economy by the EP
– Creation of project group in the Commission in charge of blue
priorities
A business evolution
• This is a MAJOR OPPORTUNITY for the European
maritime industry,
• Oceans are will become more and more a place to do
things that were not possible on shore
• In order to harness this opportunity, we have a need o
ensure the Maritime technology industry is at the heart of
initiative.

• Synergy with current project (e.g. logistic hub off French
Guiana, or deep sea mining in Wallis & Futuna islands)

Message to the Institutions
• To plea for a « European priority » On Sustainable Blue
Growth;
• To implement Leadership 2020 and other Blue Growth
related strategies;
• To use the conquest of space scheme for the conquest
of seas and oceans;
• To strengthen European industry entire value chain;
The European Maritime Industry
can’t do it on its own nor without strength in its core business

What can Industry do ?
• Increasing discussions at cross-sectoral level in order to
push a common agenda on Maritime Technology;
• Deepening tie with relevant player in the Commission
and the European Parliaments;
• Pooling competences between companies in order to
send more experts to evaluation process.
