Stadiums & Cities: People & Places
Manchester has been named as “the greatest sporting city in the UK”,
with top football and sports clubs leading the way to make the city
the best place to be a fan. Following research from ESPN.co.uk, the
University of Gloucestershire and University of Bath, Manchester
topped the UK’s rankings after scoring highly in most of the 12 factors
which fans identified as key to a great sporting city, including: value
for money, success, atmosphere, history, venues, transport links and
more. Since hosting the 2002 Commonwealth Games the city has
created a lasting legacy through its venues, allowing it to compete
with the greatest cities in the world. But how does the city best
leverage its sports infrastructure assets into economic growth,
tourism and destination appeal?

OPENING EXPERIENCES: VODAFONE ARENA

A New Home For Beşiktaş In The Heart of Historic Istanbul
Every stadium faces hurdles during construction, but to deliver
Vodafone Arena, Beşiktaş J.K. were challenged with not only
seamlessly fitting into the precious local history, but they were only
permitted to move the 850,000 truckloads of rubble in the cover of
night. Interestingly, the club estimates that by creating its own
construction company – incorporating the business interests of
board members and club partners – it saved 30% on total stadium
capital expenditure creating one of Europe’s most technologically
advanced stadiums.

OPENING EXPERIENCES: WINDSOR PARK
10.20-10.45, MAIN ROOM
Redeveloping A National Stadium For Future Generations
In May 2014, work began on the £38m redevelopment of the
National Football Stadium at Windsor Park in Belfast. The
stadium project – completed in September 2016 – extended the
capacity to over 18,000 seats, with enhanced hospitality and
conference spaces, along with new headquarters for the Irish
Football Association. The stadium continued to host domestic
football events and international matches throughout the build
period. Subsequently, the redevelopment programme then
moved on to address evident structural issues in the West Stand
with a new replacement, part-funded through insurance. The
new structure is set to be ready in time for Northern Ireland's
FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifier against San Marino in October
2016. We’ll be hearing how the resurgence in Northern Ireland’s
football success is being reflected in its National Football Stadium.

MARKET BRIEFING: STADIUMS IN RUSSIA
11.15-11.40, MAIN ROOM
From Russia With(out) Love: Opportunities Open and Close
AFL Architects with Tecnion and Synthesis Rus were
appointed by the team owner to design the new home
of FK Kuban in Krasnodar, Russia. Taking its design
inspiration from the region’s numerous sunflower fields, the
new stadium was a 45,000-seater, for football to UEFA
and FIFA standards, as well as other sports, concerts and
events. However, caught in the midst of local and national
politics, the stadium project was scrapped whilst under
development. Meanwhile, the same design team has begun
work on overlay and master planning for Moscow’s hosting
of FIFA World Cup™ 2018. Sharing his project insights and
experiences of stadium development (both good and bad)
in Russia, we welcome:
• John Roberts, Director, AFL-Architects, UK

PANEL DISCUSSION: TECHNOLOGY VS SPONSORSHIP
12.15-13.00, MAIN ROOM
Technology Procurement, Process and Promises
With the increased demands of ‘smart stadium’ solutions, where does the
design and procurement of technology sit best in the project lifecycle?
Place these Direct Client Packages early with more security through proven
(current) solutions or buy later and take on more risk through the latest
product offers? An emerging issue is how best to manage the project
timeline when it is impacted by sponsorship deals. Increasingly such
sponsorships fundamentally disrupt the procurement timeline and directly
impact the choice of product (be that video boards, IT infrastructure,
screens, lighting manufacturer, equipment, etc.). How are project teams
managing the benefits and potential disruption in the technology mix?

sports venue leaders who have embraced the integrated hotel
approach. How best to integrate hotel requirements into stadia?

PROJECT BRIEFING: NEW STADIUM HOTEL
17.00-17.20, MAIN ROOM
Hilton Garden Inn Emirates Old Trafford
Set to open in early 2017, the new £15m, 150-bed Hilton Garden Inn
Emirates Old Trafford replaces the former Old Trafford Lodge, which
the club operated for 16 years. The hotel has been financed through
a mix of cash, local council loans and, uniquely, £3m from the first
ever cricket (retail) bond. For the Hilton brand the new property is
another key addition to its growing sports portfolio. For the club –
which will operate the hotel under franchise agreement – the hotel
will play a key role in enhancing the growing mixed-use offer and
conference demand at Emirates Old Trafford.

PROJECT BRIEFING: EAST STAND, TWICKENHAM
09.10-09.45, MAIN ROOM
Update On FC Barcelona’s City-Centre Stadium District
The Rugby Football Union is to redevelop Twickenham
stadium’s east stand to improve the match day experience for
supporters. The redevelopment will double the available space
on the east stand, creating an additional 10,750 sq.m of room,
to help improve existing hospitality facilities within the stadium.
The exterior of the east stand will also be modernised while
existing bowl infrastructure and seating will not be affected.
Plans to redevelop the east stand of Twickenham stadium are
seen by the RFU as the next phase in delivering on a key area
of its objective to fuel growth of the game at every level. The RFU has hosted public
consultations for local residents,
businesses and other stakeholders
and, subject to planning
permission, the £54m project will
be completed by autumn 2018.

club and venue. Anchored in a pioneering study, undertaken by
BuroHappold Engineering in 2016, English Football fans from 58 clubs
across the Premier League, English Football League Championship
and Leagues One and Two, were asked about their experiences before,
during and after matches. This is an evidence-based discussion with
key insights into fan attitudes and what these mean for your club and
venue - don’t miss this seminal session.

Images: John Lews Stores/Valencia CF/Molcaworld
This year we split day two into parallel sessions to explore key aspects of the
multi-faceted, modern stadium business in great detail. We will welcome
experts from other industries to showcase how stadiums can learn to be
better Retail Destinations, Restaurants, Innovation Centres, TV Studios,
Visitor Attractions and much more.

PARALLEL SESSION 1A: STADIUM MAKEOVERS
11.00-11.45, MAIN ROOM
All-Wrapped Up: Cost-Effective Stadium Transformations
Where it’s impossible to move home or find the business case for major
capital expenditure, will a makeover do? The session explores the
application of new materials and creative solutions to provide low-cost,
high-impact stadium makeovers. From vinyl wraps and LED lighting,
through to temporary structures and decorative finishes. We consider
some recent case studies where tight timelines (and limited budgets)
have nevertheless resulted in highly-effective stadium transformations
– extending the life and fan-appeal for ageing stadium structures.
PARALLEL SESSION 1B: THE STADIUM AS... VISITOR ATTRACTION
11.00-11.45, BREAKOUT 1
Using All The Spaces: Creating A Non-Matchday Destination
From the established Hall of Fame, tour and museum offers,
through to zip lines and roof climbs, today’s stadium facility
incorporates an increasing range of visitor attractions. How best do
we incorporate the technical and functional requirements of these
operations into the design and build process?
• Tomasz Kowalksi, President, Stadion Energa Gdansk, Poland
• Bart Dohmen, Managing Director, BRC Imagination Arts, The Netherlands
• Andy Broad, Managing Director, Wire & Sky, UK
PARALLEL SESSION 2A: FINANCE & FUNDING
