BUSSHIN AUGUST 2013 B U D D H I S T C H U R C H O F O A K L A N D BUSSHIN AU G U S T 2 013 Volume 56 Number 8 Gathering of Joy IN THIS ISSUE By Rev. Harry Gyokyo Bridge O bon is a very special time at the Buddhist Church of Oakland. On Saturday, August 3 we will have our Obon Festival, with food, cultural exhibits, and of course the Bon Odori. But Obon isn’t just about fun and festivities. It is also deeply connected to the Obon Service, at which we gather to remember our loved ones who have passed away. It may seem strange to have a festival connected to what we normally associate with loss. However, the Obon Service is also known as “Kangi-e” or “Gathering of Joy.” This encourages us to move through our sadness towards the gratitude and appreciation we feel when we realize how much we have received from our departed loved ones. The Bon Odori is an expression of this joy. As is our custom, we will have two services on Sunday, August 4: At 9:30 AM will be our Hatsubon Service, for those families who have lost a loved one during this past year. At 10:30 AM we will have our Obon Service, which is open to everyone. Our guest speaker will be Rev. David Matsumoto of the Berkeley Buddhist Temple and Institute of Buddhist Studies. Rev. Matsumoto was one of my teachers when I was a student at IBS, so I am very excited to have him as our Obon guest speaker. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to listen to the Dharma! In gassho, Rev. Harry Gyokyo Bridge Message from our President By Linda Minamoto I hope all of you survived our first heat wave of the summer. It definitely was hot, especially on the other side of the tunnel where temperatures were in the triple digits. Although it was uncomfortable, it certainly was good for my vegetable garden especially my tomatoes. In Buddhism, we are taught to look at things from different perspectives. On the one hand, some of us probably did not like the heat because it prevented us from doing things out- doors or because we had a difficult time sleeping. On the other hand, as I said, it was great for my tomatoes! The bazaar was a huge success. We were so lucky that the weather was perfect, that we had many, many donors and volunteers, and that we did not experience any missteps. It was great to see friends that we only see during the bazaar circuit. I tell everyone, please come to our bazaar, “Oakland has the best Continued on page 2 Minister’s Message Message from our President 1 1-2 Religious News 2 Newsroom OBWA 2 Dharma School News 3-5 2013 August Shotsuki Memorial Service 6 Bingo7 Momiji Kai News 7 BCO Directory Update Form 7 Bazaar Thanks8 Temple Tid-Bits 9-10 Hatsubon Service 11 Open Position: Office Staff 11 In Memoriam 11 September Busshin Deadline Info 11 Obon Lantern Tribute Form 12 BCO 26th Annual 13 Benefit Golf Tournament Calendar14-15 BUSSHIN AUGUST 2013 Message from the President Silent Auction Continued from front page food”! I want to thank Jon Takagaki for his tireless efforts in co-chairing the bazaar. He definitely thinks outside the box and is constantly trying to improve our event. It was Jon who encouraged us to expand the use of credit cards. He has also offered to continue co-chairing the bazaar in the future. I don’t usually feel that it is appropriate for the President to single out individual accomplishments but I feel compelled to do so. I am very thankful to all of the church mem- bers who helped during the bazaar, however, I would like to specifically acknowledge a few of the “friends of the Buddhist Church of Oakland” for their help. These individuals performed some of the most challenging tasks: Victor Nakaya and Brian Wong worked on the BBQ chicken crew lifting the racks of chicken which is physically demanding and having smoke blown in their face for 4 – 5 hours: Valerie Nishimura who came at 5:00 am on Saturday and 4:00 am on Sun- day to help in the kitchen and has done so for many years (how many of us would volunteer to do this?); and Teresa Jackson (my sister) who worked a bazaar shift and also came on Tuesday to clean up the kitchen (how many of us would clean someone else’s kitchen?). Again, these are not members of BCO but they willingly came out to help us with smiles on their faces. I hope to see all of you at Obon! In gassho, Linda Minamoto Newsroom OBWA Religious News by Patti Hisaoka By Gayle Noguchi J oin us for our monthly Evening Dharma Service and Discussion on Wed. August 21st, 7:00-8:30 p.m. conducted by Reverend Harry Gyokyo Bridge. You’ll learn not only about the dharma, you’ll also learn about yourself as well! Please note that there will be no Saturday Study Class in August. We also hope to see you at our upcoming Hatsubon/Obon Service on Sunday, August 4th. The Hatsubon Service (first year Obon) begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Obon Family Service at 10:30 a.m. We are fortunate to have as our guest speaker Rev. Dr. David Ryoe Matsumoto. Rev. Matsumoto is minister of the Berkeley Buddhist Temple and Director of the Center for Contemporary Shin Buddhist Studies at the Institute of Buddhist Studies. Drawing on his vast knowledge and expertise, Rev. Matsumoto conveys the teachings in a way that is understandable and relatable for all and he shares the dharma with warmth and sincerity. Please also plan to stay for the luncheon after service. If you like what we’re doing at BCO and want to see religious programs/activities continue and grow, come to our meeting on Sunday, August 11th at 12 noon (after Shotsuki Service). On Fridays, September 6th and November 15th, BCO will help coordinate BINGO night at the Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church (SACBC) in Union City. We need 15-18 volunteers to work the entire evening (approx. 5-10pm). Tasks include cashiering, verifying winners, selling FlashBoard games and Pull Tab sales/payouts. For each evening, BCO receives $500 for the General Fund (that’s $1,000 for two nights’ work). If you’re unable to attend, there is also a need for baked goods, including cakes, pies and cookies, which will be sold at the event. This is a good chance to get to know your fellow members, and raise funds for BCO. For more information, or to sign-up, please contact Robert Noguchi, through the Church Office, or by e-mail, at [email protected]. Momiji Kai News By Nancy Yamamoto N ow that the all important annual Bazaar has come and gone, we are trying to get back into our normal schedule although we still have the Obon event coming up. The group will be taking another mini ferry cruise to San Francisco departing from Jack London square on Thursday July 18, 2013. We will be spending the better part of the day in the Ferry building area. People have asked, what is so interesting in that area but one does not realize how many shops, places to eat and other interesting activities are taking place all day long in the locale. We are continuing our healthy yoga classes, with Patti Hirota giving generously of her time. Some of us are working on our knitting with expectations of Renee Grohl returning at Thanksgiving to continue coaching us again. We wish everyone a happy, fun-filled and safe summer holiday. BCO Directory Update We are getting ready to publish a new BCO Directory. But we need to update your information. If anything has changed, please send updates to Mary at BCO825@aol. com; or complete the following and mail to BCO, 825 Jackson, Oakland CA 94607. Please reply before August 30. Preliminary figures indicate that this years’ bazaar was the most financially successful since 2009. It could not have happened without the help of the many volunteers and donors. It was great to see those of you who help year-in and year-out and it was especially uplifting to see the new volunteers, many who are new to our Sangha and participate in the Wednesday night or Saturday study groups. I hope all of you enjoyed yourselves and will continue to support the bazaar. A special thanks to Jay Kaneshige for designing this year’s poster and postcards. If you haven’t noticed, we are using the udon in Jay’s design as the logo for our Nikkoland Bazaar. We would particularly like to thank our chairpersons; they did the real grunt work. Without them, the bazaar could not have taken place. We would like to highlight the tremendous work of Carol Thunen, Chairperson of the Silent Auction. Every year the Silent Auction has grown. This year it bought in $9000 a 50% increase over last year. The great thing about the Silent Auction is that it is all profit because everything offered is donated. Please think about donating next year or soliciting a donation from a business you regularly patronize.
