Born to compete. Even with ourselves.
The form varies. But the racing bloodlines, the undying dedication to pure sports car performance,
the marriage of power and efficiency embodied in the Porsche principles, do not. And that truth is
revealed in that moment you turn the key. Discover it for yourself with a test drive. Porsche. There is
no substitute.

REAL ESTATE WANTED
To all IRPCA members: Your Autocross Committee needs your help!
We are in need of large parking lots or open
paved areas that we can use for future autocross venues. Some of the venues we have
used in the past have told us that we are not
able to use them anymore, or the rental prices
have risen to the point of not being cost-effective.
Basically we are looking for open unobstructed lots with a minimum of light poles, curbs,
drainage grates or other features harmful to
suspensions and bodywork.
Church lots, and school lots tend to not be
good candidates due to insurance regulations.
Even Davis county, and Utah county areas will
be considered.
If you have friends that are involved with
any other car or motorcycle clubs, perhaps
they have areas that they use that might fit our
needs. Business associates, relatives, neighbors—anyone who might have some information on lots. Ski resort lots are also a good
possibility.
All we need are addresses (and contact
names, if you can get them); we can do the
actual negotiations.
So, if you are driving around and think, “Hey,
that lot might work!” contact the Autocross
Committee via e-mail at [email protected].
Thanks for your help!

On Sunday morning, the intrepid tourists
were treated to a visual feast at the Rennwagen Motor Company, a shop run by none
other than Bill Doyle, one of the foremost experts on the venerable “Fuhrmann” Porsche
four-cam engine. Bill personally gave a tour
of the shop, in which we saw a number of
the engines in various stages of disassembly, as well as countless parts both original
and reproduction. Bill was happy to answer
questions about the engines, the cars powered by them, and the fascinating story of
how he came to be involved with them.

Good, part 2
Photo 1 shows an OEM singlerow intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing which just came off a Carrera
996. You can see how the bearing
is sealed: There is no way that this
bearing would get proper lubrication under the conditions where it is
installed. This bearing was extracted
as it had just begun to fail—the owner
was very lucky we caught it in time.
OK, so what’s the big solution?
Actually it is a quite simple concept
with a not-so-simple execution. If the
problem is lack of lubrication, then
the solution has to be proper lubrication. Duh!
But the location of the bearing and
the shape of the flange create difficulties. The bearing and flange are
sandwiched between the engine’s
block and the rotating flywheel just

which engages with
the outside teeth of
the flywheel, which
in turn is bolted to
the crankshaft in the
center of the engine.
The triangular piece
1
on the bottom of the
bell housing is the
flange which supports the bearing at
the end of the intermediate shaft.
The solution is to install direct oil
injection to the IMS bearing using
the engine’s own pressurized oil.
The M96/M97 engines have several
unused high-pressure oil ports already
built into the
block, so it is very
easy to tap into
one of them. A
high-pressure
stainless-steelbraided oil line
is connected to
the port (photo
3), which carries
pressurized oil
when the engine
is running and
its oil pumps are
operating. A small
notch needs to be
cut into the edge
of the bell housing to allow for
the routing of the
oil hose.
Then, a new
flange is installed,
replacing
the factory
flange. This
is where the
other end of
the highpressure
oil line that
comes from
the engine connects to (photo 4). This
flange, as you can see in photo 5, is
much flatter than the OEM part, to
make room for the integrated oil injection system. When this new flange is
installed, it is recommended that the
existing IMS bearing be replaced with
either a new ceramic-ball bearing or a
new OEM all-steel bearing. When an
OEM bearing is installed, the outside
seal is removed to allow the oil to
completely bathe the rotating balls
and inner race of the bearing in clean,
filtered, circulating oil. This reduces
friction and heat, thus promoting
a long life for the bearing. The oil
that overflows from the bearing, just
makes its way down to the oil pan to
be filtered again and pumped through
the system once more.
To install the kit, the transmission,
clutch and/or torque converter, and
flywheel need to be removed from
the car. The engine then needs to
be locked in top-dead-center (TDC)
position, and then removal of the
flange and/or bearing and installation
of the new parts can be performed.
It also makes sense to replace the
clutch at this point, since there won’t
be additional labor in doing so—just
the cost of the new clutch parts. Any
Porsche shop, as well as knowledgeable individuals with the right tools
and equipment, will be able to install
this kit.
This IMS bearing fix was developed
in south Florida, where it’s been
installed and tested on street and
race cars. There is another somewhat
similar (in concept) solution developed in Georgia. This other solution
includes the replacement of the OEM
IMS ball bearing with a plain journal
bearing, which also has a direct oil
feed system. Unfortunately, this solution only applies to the first generation
single-row IMS bearing cars, model
years 2000 through 2005.
It is important to note that other
conditions have also been considered
to be additional possible causes of
bearing damage in these engines—in
particular, vibration. These M96/M97
engines all develop a harmonic vibra-
5
tion, intrinsic to the design of the
engine, at 3,000 RPM. It has been
generally recommended that you
do not sustain a 3,000 RPM engine
speed for extended periods of time
when driving on the highways. It
is easy to set the cruise control at
72 MPH, which in high gear is very
close to the described 3,000 RPM.
Just reduce or increase speed a
bit to avoid holding the engine at a
steady at 3,000 RPM.
Also, the front engine mount on
the Boxster and Cayman (photo 6)
is a wear item, generally neglected, that needs to be replaced at
50,000-mile intervals. A good front
engine mount helps to mitigate the

holiday party wrap-up
Some 60 IRPCA members braved
the December cold and snow (it
wasn’t that bad, actually) to attend
the holiday party at the Willow Creek
Country Club. Excellent food was
served, the wine flowed like wine,
awards and door prizes were given,
people danced, and a good time was
generally had by all.
The evening featured a short
program in which outgoing IRPCA
President Will Crowther (thanks again
for two great years, Will!) introduced
the incoming President, Gus Stribakos.
Gus graciously accepted his new post
and briefly outlined some of his ideas
for moving the club forward in the
coming months.
Awards for this season’s autocross
series competition were also presented; notably among them was ace
slalomist Rob Cottle’s overall victory in
the hotly-contested G Class.
Socials are IRPCA’s most popular
events and are enjoyed by old and
new members alike. If you haven’t
been to one, plan to join us at the
spring social! Until then, happy holidays to all—whatever holidays you
may happen to celebrate.

how we roll
Our club is blessed by some of the
best facilities and terrain for the car
enthusiast. The Intermountain Region
Porsche Club of America organizes a
variety of activities to help you enjoy
your car.
Several Driving Tours are organized each year. These give you a
chance to meet with other owners
and take a nice drive on our scenic
roads. Some are day trips with a stop
for lunch, while others are multi-day
trips with overnight stops. Stops are
made for cultural events and to photograph our cars at scenic points. We
seldom have “single point” restaurants
or hotels you must stay in, although a
“Tour Central” hotel and/or restaurant
will be designated to provide a gathering place. There is no charge for tours,
and you are welcome to join or leave
a Tour in progress whenever you wish.
These trips are a great excuse to get
out and drive those scenic roads that
we never seem to find time to enjoy.
If you want to explore the potential
of your car, a driving tour isn’t the best
place to do it. Fortunately, the Porsche
Club offers a couple ways to do that
safely. The Region holds Autocross
events during the warmer months.
These are held in large parking lots
(such as fairgrounds or the Maverik
Center). They involve navigating a
course laid out in the parking lot with
traffic cones. Cars are run one at a
time, or spaced well apart for safety.
The events are timed, with each
driver getting 5-6 runs. Speeds are
generally low, with emphasis on getting through the tight course quickly.
The design of the course is always
done with safety in mind—generally,
the biggest danger to you is hitting
one of the cones, leaving your car
unharmed, but your ego bruised.
Helmets with Snell SA or M ratings
of 2005 or newer are required, but
loaners are available at the event.
Participation in the autocross is open
to anybody with a driver’s license.
Miller Motorsports Park also provides an excellent opportunity to learn
the potential of your car. The Porsche
Club has several Driver Education
events there each year. Events are
run on the same track in Tooele that
professional race series(American LeMans, Grand Am Racing, etc.) use. We
use either half the track (providing a
course about 2.5 miles long with 1011 turns), or the full 4.5-mile course.
The Driver Education events are a fun
and legal way to explore the highspeed dynamics that make Porsches
legendary. Although several cars
will be on the track, the event is very
safe, with passing only in designated
areas (never in corners) and only with
agreement between both drivers.
Each driver will be given about two
hours of track time each day. As with
autocross, helmets are required, as
are long pants, long-sleeved shirts
and closed shoes. Loaner helmets are
generally not available, so you will
want to buy one or arrange to borrow
one for the day.
If you don’t feel like driving, the club
still has a lot to offer. The Region has
a great Social calendar, with events
planned almost every month. The social schedule generally starts in January, and typical events include “date
nights” to restaurants, plays and other
activities. The social events continue
through the year, with summer, fall
and Christmas activities planned.
Plenty of opportunities exist to get
involved, not only as a participant but
as a volunteer. If you’d like to help out
with event planning, contact any of
the Regional leaders on page 2.

in the zone
Springs. I still find it hard to believe
that they’re both gone from us, but it
was nice to talk with some of their
family members and PCA members
on Saturday.
Later in October, I joined Carrera Region for their OktoberFiesta,
centered in Las Cruces. Several of us
went on a driving tour on Saturday
morning to Rockhound State Park and
Spring Canyon State Park, with the
first stop at Arroyo Seco Raceway. It
was nice to see that Joe and Nancy
Warren of Rocky Mountain Region
made the long trip from Colorado to
join us! The tour ended back at Arroyo
Seco, where we joined everyone else
for lunch. Afterward, some of the tour
people drove some sessions of the DE
at the track.
Dinner that night was at Hotel
Encanto (the event host hotel) and,
as always, lots of valuable door prizes
were handed out! I won a nice black
hat with the Porsche crest on it.
On Sunday morning, we had autocross practice sessions at the track,
followed by lunch, and then the timed
runs were in the afternoon. Definitely
a fun weekend for everyone, and next
year’s OktoberFiesta is already on
my calendar!
Barely a week
later, I flew to
Salt Lake City on
November 2nd and
joined Intermountain Region for a
dinner at the Bohemian Brewery and
Grill in Midvale (about 15 miles from
downtown Salt Lake). Another fine
dinner with club members and more
door prizes! I wasn’t lucky this time,
but several people walked away with
nice Porsche Design stuff, courtesy of
Ken Garff Porsche in Orem, Utah.
For the next edition of “In the Zone,”
I’ll have info about the Tech Tactics
West at the PCNA Training facility in
Ontario, CA. I’m really looking forward to this event, as I’ve never been
to a Tech Tactics. I’ll also have info on
the many events I’ll have attended in
December: holiday parties at four of
Zone 9’s Regions!

Hello Zone 9 members,
Here we are at the last month of
2013, winding down a little but also
planning for 2014! For me, I plan to
attend many of the same Region
events that I attended this year, but I
also want to get to some new (to me)
events in Utah and Texas next year.
Prior to attending Carrera Region’s
OktoberFiesta in Las Cruces and
Deming, I attended one of the events
of the 356 Registry’s West Coast
Holiday in Santa Fe. The concours on
the plaza was outstanding, and it was
quite a sight to see over two hundred
356’s parked on the plaza’s surrounding streets and some of the streets
that lead into the plaza. The cars
ranged from 1952 to 1966 (I think) and
they came from all over the country—
and in some cases were shipped from
overseas! It was great to walk among
all of the cars and talk to the owners
and spectators. Jim Puckett and his
team outdid themselves in organizing
and running such an excellent event.
A week after the West Coast Holiday, I was in Colorado for the Denver
Marathon, and I was able to attend
the services for the Pools in Colorado
