ROMANCING THE
( SOUTHERN)
RHÔNE
Exuberant, inviting, and classically French,
the Southern Rhône has near-universal appeal.
The same can be said for its elegant wines.
Wending its way south from Montélimar to the Mediterranean, the Rhône River
travels through some of the most beautiful wine country in France. Here, the
cozy towns and warm, windswept vineyards of the Southern Rhône bask in the
sunshine that gives the wines their full flavours and soft textures. These wines
have a style that’s classically French and an appeal that’s almost universal.
Fashioned with the Grenache grape, they are elegantly robust mouthfuls of
sun-ripe fruit that are amazingly versatile with food.

WARMING
TREND
A consistent climate = solid vintages
Almost uniquely in France, the Mediterranean
climate of the Southern Rhône is consistently warm year after year. This means the
fruit reaches full ripeness each growing
season, and wines will deliver the same big,
rich fruit and plush mouthfeel from one
vintage to the next. In short, there are no weak
vintages. While some years, such as 2007
and 2010, are especially outstanding, the
years in between are also reliably solid.

TASTING NOTE: Starting the reds and
a borderline outstanding Cotes du Rhone,
the 2012 Premiere Cote checks in as a
blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and
10% Mourvedre that was aged all in
concrete. Made with an emphasis on
freshness and coming from easternfacing slopes around the village of
Courthezon (which is on the eastern edge
of Chateauneuf du Pape), it possesses
notable aromas of pepper, wild herbs,
licorice and pretty red and blackberry

beautifully concentrated, it’s a serious
wine worth seeking out. Drink now-2018.

SMOOTH
MOVES
Full flavours and velvety texture unite
Some big red wines made from the likes of
Cabernet, Merlot or Malbec are all about dark
fruit wrapped in meaty tannins. Grenache,
the Southern Rhône’s thin-skinned, heatloving grape de choix, rides the line between
exuberant red and dark berry and cherry fruit
with savoury spices (with Syrah, Mourvèdre
and other varieties adding darker fruit and
peppery shading), and its tannins are ripe and
soft, making robust, generously flavourful
wines with smooth, velvety textures.

FOOD
FLEXIBLE
With so many matches,
this isn’t your typical red
Conventional wisdom says big red wines pair
with big red meats – but Grenache is not a
conventional grape. With flavours dipping into
the red-fruit spectrum, Southern Rhône
reds are more versatile than most. Sure,
they’ve got the heft to pair with rich meats
and cheeses, but they’re also well suited to
lighter meats like chicken, pork and even
salmon. Their gentler tannins mean they
also work with veggie dishes and are among
the best big red wines for sipping.

ANALYSIS
Southern Rhône has something for everyone
Great news for wine lovers: while the Southern Rhône
produces some of the most premium wines in the
world, it also produces excellent wines in virtually every
price range. Curious taste-explorers can get quality
Côtes-du-Rhône at a very friendly price. Then, as one
becomes more attuned to the region and its terroir,
Lirac, Ventoux and Rasteau are great starting points
before moving to the iconic Vacqueyras and
Gigondas appellations and the undisputed titan of the
region, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Burgundy, expresses a sense of place like no other. This famously fastidious
and delicate cool-climate grape is vulnerable to a wide range of winemaking
worst-case scenarios including spring frosts, early ripening, mildew, rot and
viruses such as fanleaf and leafroll – each of which can spell disaster and
test the resolve of even the most seasoned winemaker. Yet such is the allure
and precision of the wines Pinot can fashion that winemakers the world
over strive to create definitive, elegant expressions. The grape may have
originated in Burgundy but, with the help of advantageous conditions working
in concert across the globe, it has become a true world traveller. There are a
multitude of factors behind crafting successful New World Pinot Noir; we
have highlighted a handful of major contributors.

GIVE THE GRAPE SOME LATITUDE
Winemaking is possible within two narrow latitudinal bands between
30° and 50° north and south of the equator. In keeping with its
persnickety temperament, Pinot performs best only at the cooler,
more challenging limits of this range: Burgundy is situated at 47°N,
Marlborough at 43°S and Ontario approximately 43°N. Cooler
conditions foster more elegant and complex expressions, while
warmer zones – if they do not cause the grape to ripen too early or
wither on the vine – yield wines that are more overtly fruity.
A Pinot Noir vineyard high
in Mendoza’s Uco Valley.
Pinot Noir thrives in regions that can offer growing conditions
that range between 14° and 16°C. As a rule, temperatures drop by
roughly 0.6 Celsius for every 100-metre increase in height. This
means that fundamentally warm places, such as Argentina’s
Mendoza region, can produce exquisite Pinot Noir from vineyards
planted at elevation. Along with cooler temperatures, altitude often
correlates to poorer soils, which stress the vines and result in wines
of greater flavour concentration.

PERFECT FORECAST:
FOG AND COOL BREEZES
Cool ocean currents such as Chile’s Humboldt and the northern
Pacific’s California Current bring relief from heat that might otherwise
render many areas unsuitable for Pinot Noir. The cooling ocean
breezes and fogs generated by these currents preserve the freshness
and acidity so critical in the creation of balanced wines and prevent the
grapes from ripening too quickly and developing jammy, overripe
notes, even in areas that experience an abundance of sunshine.

THE DIRT ON PINOT’S SENSE OF PLACE
One of the more beloved aspects of Pinot Noir is its ability to precisely
express a sense of place. The greatest demonstrations of this are
found in Burgundy, where calcareous clay, limestone and marl soils
help create Pinot that famously expresses incredibly minute variances
in terroir. Across the New World, varied soil and climate combinations
allow for nearly boundless new and exciting expressions. Wherever it’s
grown, the best expressions come from the poorest soils, which stress
the vines and result in lower yields and greater concentration of
flavour and give the wines impressive acidity, structure and minerality.

TASTING NOTE: A spectacular Riesling ... This is
the first Redstone Riesling release from the south
block of the Limestone Vineyard, a 14-year-old
sustainably farmed block on Twenty Mile Bench.
The 2012 vintage was warm and it shows in the
pure fruit intensity and laser focus of this wine:
white peach, lime zest and a deep core of
minerality. I am thrilled with this first effort from
Redstone, and anxiously look forward to future
vintages. Cheers! Score: 92 (Natalie MacLean,

TASTING NOTE: While the blend for this
white wine is a proprietor’s secret that Therapy
won’t let slip, the team pants – ahem, plants such
white grapes as Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon
Blanc and Muscat in the Okanagan Valley. Made in
a fun-loving bistro style that’s just off-dry, the wine
reveals plenty of apple, peach and tropical fruit with
a crisp, lively finish. (VINTAGES panel, Aug. 2014)
TASTING NOTE: This is a very fine, firm, subtle and
dry, crunchy riesling. When last tasted January
2015 the lifted nose was showing intriguing citrus
like honeyed grapefruit or orange nuances amid
green apple and stony notes. It has 13.7 residual
sugar but you would never guess that from the
mouthwatering acidity and mineral finish. It is solid
and well structured with excellent length, and the
great energy I have come to expect from organically
grown Bench riesling. Score: 91 (David Lawrason,

CLOUDLINE PINOT GRIS 2013
Willamette Valley
This is the Oregon outpost of Burgundy icons the
Drouhin family. Consulting winemaker Véronique
Drouhin-Boss produces an aromatic and floral
Pinot Gris on the drier end of the PG spectrum.
The wine is tank fermented, preserving its
delicate aromatics and vibrancy. Expect a lively
wine with aromas and flavours of peach and
citrus that will match well with shellfish.
The famously cool and foggy Russian River
Valley enjoys a long, slow ripening period, thanks
to the moderating influence of the Pacific Ocean,
which in some places is less than 16 km from
the vineyards. The Pinots produced here are
loved for their richness and forward dark berry
fruit. The Frei Brothers Reserve is characterized
by a noted complexity and elegance and for

TASTING NOTE: The 2010 Merlot sees
55% French new oak. It has a vibrant dark
cherry and boysenberry scented nose laced with
vanilla and then after a few minutes, there are
hints of blackcurrant pastilles. The palate is well
balanced with supple ripe tannins, layers of
toasty dark berry fruit laced with espresso and
spice. The finish is rounded and well defined
with hints of white pepper and orange peel
towards the well crafted finish. This is a lovely
Merlot from Rustenberg, although I would drink

this wine on Castro’s most valued inheritance, a
block of old vines surrounding his family’s 16thcentury homestead at Quinta da Pellada. The
wine was blended in 2011 with jaen and touriga
nacional from the same property. All of its
elements are tightly integrated, yielding a glimpse
of crushed green peppercorns, of cool, foresty
scents that bring ferns to mind. The formidable
depth of the wine is earthy rather than fruity; the
acidity seems to reflect the wine’s flavors into a
tessellation of light and darkness. A classic from

and cherry. Very sweet and silky, with ripe red
berry and spicecake flavors lifted by a kick of white
pepper. Finishes sweet, spicy and long, with
intense raspberry confit and bitter cherry character
and very good clarity. Score: 90 (Josh Raynolds,
