The same can be said for its elegant wines. Wending its way south from Montélimar to the Mediterranean, the Rhône River travels through some of the most beautiful wine country in France. Here, the cozy towns and warm, windswept vineyards of the Southern Rhône bask in the sunshine that gives the wines their full flavours and soft textures. These wines have a style that’s classically French and an appeal that’s almost universal. Fashioned with the Grenache grape, they are elegantly robust mouthfuls of sun-ripe fruit that are amazingly versatile with food. 2 VINTAGES Vineyards in the Ventoux region, seen through an arch, in the medieval town of Vaison-la-Romaine. VINTAGES 3 Grenache vineyards in Gigondas. WARMING TREND A consistent climate = solid vintages Almost uniquely in France, the Mediterranean climate of the Southern Rhône is consistently warm year after year. This means the fruit reaches full ripeness each growing season, and wines will deliver the same big, rich fruit and plush mouthfeel from one vintage to the next. In short, there are no weak vintages. While some years, such as 2007 and 2010, are especially outstanding, the years in between are also reliably solid. 4 VINTAGES DOMAINE LES APHILLANTHES PLAN DE DIEU CUVÉE DES GALETS CÔTES DU RHÔNE-VILLAGES 2011 LA FERME DU MONT PREMIÈRE CÔTE CÔTES DU RHÔNE 2012 DOMAINE LES GRANDS BOIS CUVÉE PHILIPPINE CÔTES DU RHÔNE-VILLAGES 2013 Unfiltered, AP AC Unfiltered, AC TASTING NOTE: Fresh and enticing, with mouthwatering, finely beaded acidity along the edges of the blackberry-, raspberry- and fig-flavored core. Made with an emphasis on freshness and coming from easternfacing slopes around the village of Courthezon (which is on the eastern edge of Chateauneuf du Pape), it possesses notable aromas of pepper, wild herbs, licorice and pretty red and blackberry styled fruit. Medium-bodied, supple and beautifully concentrated, it’s a serious wine worth seeking out. Drink now-2018. TASTING NOTE: Deep ruby-purple in the glass, this wine opens with aromas of mocha, vanilla, mulberry, blueberry and plum. It shows its youthfulness in a touch of tannic grip, yet the mouthfeel is satiny and the palate is packed with berry fruit and sweet spices. This will make a great choice for char-grilled burgers or ribs. (V INTAGES panel, April 2015) Full-bodied & Smooth 286344 (D) 750 mL $18.95 2 2 VINTAGES 5 Grenache grapes. BELOW: The town of Lirac, which supplied wine to the papal court in the 14th century. SMOOTH MOVES Full flavours and velvety texture unite Some big red wines made from the likes of Cabernet, Merlot or Malbec are all about dark fruit wrapped in meaty tannins. Grenache, the Southern Rhône’s thin-skinned, heatloving grape de choix, rides the line between exuberant red and dark berry and cherry fruit with savoury spices (with Syrah, Mourvèdre and other varieties adding darker fruit and peppery shading), and its tannins are ripe and soft, making robust, generously flavourful wines with smooth, velvety textures. 6 VINTAGES FAMILLE PERRIN LES CHRISTINS VACQUEYRAS 2012 DOMAINE DUSEIGNEUR ANTARÈS LIRAC 2011 CHÂTEAU DE NAGES JT COSTIÈRES DE NÎMES 2012 AC AP AC (Michel Gassier) TASTING NOTE: The beautiful 2012 Vacqueyras (75% Grenache and 25% Syrah), which comes from 16 hectares located on a plateau behind the village, is a rounded, sexy effort that has beautiful bouquet garni, pepper, licorice and driedsoil aromas to go with ample sweet black raspberry fruit. From low crop yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare and bottled unfiltered, this is an outstanding wine at a stunningly attractive price. Deep ruby/plum/purple, with notes of Asian soy sauce interwoven with kirsch liqueur, underbrush, lavender and Christmas fruitcake, the wine is deep, full-bodied, opulent, and a total hedonistic and intellectual turn-on. With flavours dipping into the red-fruit spectrum, Southern Rhône reds are more versatile than most. Sure, they’ve got the heft to pair with rich meats and cheeses, but they’re also well suited to lighter meats like chicken, pork and even salmon. Their gentler tannins mean they also work with veggie dishes and are among the best big red wines for sipping. 8 VINTAGES DOMAINE DU VIEUX LAZARET CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2011 AC (Jérôme Quiot) The red wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are prized for being some of the most robustly flavoured and textured wines in the world without sacrificing their structural elegance. This approachably priced Pape serves up rich blackberry and cherry fruit, subtle floral notes and plenty of textural depth. It’ll make a glorious partner for a fullflavoured Epoisses or Pont-l’Évêque, braised meats, or pepper steaks. Savour it with grilled salmon, summer salads or pasta with olives and fresh herbs. COSTBENEFIT ANALYSIS Southern Rhône has something for everyone Great news for wine lovers: while the Southern Rhône produces some of the most premium wines in the world, it also produces excellent wines in virtually every price range. Curious taste-explorers can get quality Côtes-du-Rhône at a very friendly price. Then, as one becomes more attuned to the region and its terroir, Lirac, Ventoux and Rasteau are great starting points before moving to the iconic Vacqueyras and Gigondas appellations and the undisputed titan of the region, Châteauneuf-du-Pape. 10 VINTAGES ORTAS PRESTIGE RASTEAU 2010 AC (Cave de Rasteau) PIERRE AMADIEU ROMANEMACHOTTE GIGONDAS 2012 DOMAINE DE LA VIEILLE JULIENNE LES TROIS SOURCES CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2012 AC AC TASTING NOTE: Savoury and tasty with dark red spicy fruit in this AC-appellation southern French red wine. Gorgeously perfumed and voluptuous, with fabulous blackberry, licorice, citron, salty minerality and hints of violet, this beauty flows onto the palate with full-bodied richness, building tannin and terrific length. The texture here is brilliant, and while it will benefit from 2-4 years in the cellar, this puppy is hard to resist now. This famously fastidious and delicate cool-climate grape is vulnerable to a wide range of winemaking worst-case scenarios including spring frosts, early ripening, mildew, rot and viruses such as fanleaf and leafroll – each of which can spell disaster and test the resolve of even the most seasoned winemaker. Yet such is the allure and precision of the wines Pinot can fashion that winemakers the world over strive to create definitive, elegant expressions. The grape may have originated in Burgundy but, with the help of advantageous conditions working in concert across the globe, it has become a true world traveller. There are a multitude of factors behind crafting successful New World Pinot Noir; we have highlighted a handful of major contributors. California MIGRATION PINOT NOIR 2013 Russian River Valley, Sonoma County (Duckhorn Vineyards) Sonoma County is home to more soil types than all of France. The Russian River alone has both alluvial and clay soils, allowing for great diversity of expression in its Pinot. In keeping with its persnickety temperament, Pinot performs best only at the cooler, more challenging limits of this range: Burgundy is situated at 47°N, Marlborough at 43°S and Ontario approximately 43°N. Cooler conditions foster more elegant and complex expressions, while warmer zones – if they do not cause the grape to ripen too early or wither on the vine – yield wines that are more overtly fruity. A Pinot Noir vineyard high in Mendoza’s Uco Valley. Pinot Noir thrives in regions that can offer growing conditions that range between 14° and 16°C. As a rule, temperatures drop by roughly 0.6 Celsius for every 100-metre increase in height. This means that fundamentally warm places, such as Argentina’s Mendoza region, can produce exquisite Pinot Noir from vineyards planted at elevation. Along with cooler temperatures, altitude often correlates to poorer soils, which stress the vines and result in wines of greater flavour concentration. 14 VINTAGES ALTITUDE AN APTITUDE FOR ALTITUDE Ontario CREEKSIDE QUEENSTON ROAD PINOT NOIR 2013 VQA St. David’s Bench, Niagara Peninsula St. David’s Bench has an elevation of 105-145 metres above sea level, a factor that contributed to the crafting of this elegant, vibrant, fresh and structured Pinot. RAVEN’S ROOST PINOT NOIR 2013 VQA Niagara Peninsula (Coyote’s Run Estate Winery) Latitude, glacial soils and the moderating influence of Lake Ontario all play a role in making Niagara ideal for Pinot and in creating intense, mineral- and spice-filled wines like this. FREI BROTHERS RESERVE PINOT NOIR 2012 Russian River Valley, Sonoma County The Russian River Valley can experience as much as a 20°C drop in temperature thanks to evening fogs that roll in from the Pacific Ocean, preserving Pinot’s elegance, freshness and fruit. The Duck Pond is earthy and spicy with plenty of characteristic cherry fruit. LUCA G LOT PINOT NOIR 2012 Tupungato, Uco Valley, Mendoza (Laura Catena, Prop.) This aromatic, velvety-textured and fruity Pinot was sourced from vines planted at an average of 4,710 feet. Poor soils stress the vines and encourage wines of even greater concentration and complexity. O’LEARY WALKER PINOT NOIR 2012 Adelaide Hills, South Australia The cool, long and dry growing season of the Adelaide Hills is further enhanced by sloped vineyards and ancient soils. This combination results in wines of great complexity, depth, balance and character. PERFECT FORECAST: FOG AND COOL BREEZES Cool ocean currents such as Chile’s Humboldt and the northern Pacific’s California Current bring relief from heat that might otherwise render many areas unsuitable for Pinot Noir. The cooling ocean breezes and fogs generated by these currents preserve the freshness and acidity so critical in the creation of balanced wines and prevent the grapes from ripening too quickly and developing jammy, overripe notes, even in areas that experience an abundance of sunshine. AUNTSFIELD SINGLE VINEYARD PINOT NOIR 2012 Southern Valleys, Marlborough, South Island The Southern Valleys region has the oldest soils of Marlborough’s three sub-regions, a factor that promotes this wine’s flinty minerality and focused red fruit and cherry flavours. 90+ points (Stephen Tanzer, vinousmedia.com) Medium-bodied & Fruity 361246 (XD) 750 mL $29.95 2 Limestone and clay soil in a Marlborough vineyard. THE DIRT ON PINOT’S SENSE OF PLACE One of the more beloved aspects of Pinot Noir is its ability to precisely express a sense of place. The greatest demonstrations of this are found in Burgundy, where calcareous clay, limestone and marl soils help create Pinot that famously expresses incredibly minute variances in terroir. Across the New World, varied soil and climate combinations allow for nearly boundless new and exciting expressions. Wherever it’s grown, the best expressions come from the poorest soils, which stress the vines and result in lower yields and greater concentration of flavour and give the wines impressive acidity, structure and minerality. Consulting winemaker Véronique Drouhin-Boss produces an aromatic and floral Pinot Gris on the drier end of the PG spectrum. The wine is tank fermented, preserving its delicate aromatics and vibrancy. Expect a lively wine with aromas and flavours of peach and citrus that will match well with shellfish. The famously cool and foggy Russian River Valley enjoys a long, slow ripening period, thanks to the moderating influence of the Pacific Ocean, which in some places is less than 16 km from the vineyards. CECCHI VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO 2011 DOCG TASTING NOTE: (90% sangiovese and 10% other varieties): Good full, deep red. Aromas of blueberry, licorice and violet. Supple and sweet but serious, with a slightly medicinal cast to the bright flavors of dark red berries, tobacco leaf and minerals. This very graceful wine shows sneaky concentration and finishes with supple tannins and very good length. I especially like its pure delivery of sangiovese-accurate fruit. Score: 91 (Ian D’Agata, vinousmedia.com, Sept. 2014) TASTING NOTE: An easy-drinking yet complex Sangiovese-based blend showing cherry fruit, grilled herbs, cedar and chocolate with wisps of smoky oak. Smoke, chiseled mineral, toasted almond and espresso frame and give definition to a substantial core of dark fruit. The mouthfeel is velvety and textured, but it’s also slightly thinner and shorter compared to vintages of the recent past. One year in barrique and one year in botte grande is the aging regime used. The wine was blended in 2011 with jaen and touriga nacional from the same property. All of its elements are tightly integrated, yielding a glimpse of crushed green peppercorns, of cool, foresty scents that bring ferns to mind.
