transforming your library
I hope that you all had a great summer. We certainly
had a busy time at Thunder Bay Public Library with two
new important additions to our service.
hub:north, our small business zone, was launched on
the lower floor of Waverley Library. This exciting new
service is a partnership with the Community Economic
Development Commission and the Northwestern
Ontario Innovation Centre. We are now sharing library
space with 5 young start-up businesses, helping them
to incubate and grow, until they are ready to leave the
nest – hopefully as Fortune 500 companies! The
benefits of hub:north to Thunder Bay Public Library are
immense. It connects us to our business community,
it delivers our strategic direction of economic development and it is bringing more people into the Library.

supporting a local author. On the day we launched
One Book: One Community, We’re All In This Together was #5 on the Globe & Mail bestseller list. Our aim is
to help make it #1.
One Book: One Community is delivering TBPL’s strategic direction of lifelong learning and helping to boost our
circulation. It is also delivering another of our objectives,
to create a stronger, more connected community by
fostering community well being and personal growth.
The One Book: One Community project is the perfect
fit for this goal, as the aim is to unite the community
through a shared reading experience. We want as
many people as possible to read and discuss the book,
both on social media and in person. While the book is
fun to read it also tackles some serious issues. We
will be hosting a mental health panel, which will bring
together local experts to discuss various mental health

Stories
1914 - 1918
Share your legacy.
Families and individuals are invited to
share their stories by contacting the
World War One Thunder Bay Centennial
project directly at [email protected]
People & Stories Feature
By the winter of 1916 it had become clear that the conflict of the First World War was far from over. Over four dozen individuals
from Fort William and Port Arthur had already lost their lives during, or as a result of the war. The impact of the war is most
prevalent in the stories, photos and records that show the real people who gave their all to the war effort in many different ways.
On July 9, 1916 a special train transporting over 200 army medical corps troops
made its way eastward from military camp Sewell. As the train reached Fort William,
medical staff aboard discovered a soldier with the beginning stages of smallpox.
Based on the advice of Dr. Cook (Canadian Pacific Railway), the train left for Port
Arthur and an existing military camp. Dr. Cook contacted Port Arthur Medical Officer
Thunder Bay
Centennial Project
Dr. Laurie and explained the situation. Immediately concerned, Dr. Laurie sent Major
J. A. Crozier to meet the train and examine the soldier; he also telephoned the Port
Arthur Police Department to ensure no one disembarked the train. Heated negotiations between City, railway, and military officials ensued for hours as they debated
exactly how to proceed. Crown Attorney W. F. Langworthy even joined the discussions and threatened to arrest anyone on board the train if they attempted to leave.
That night it was decided that the train would return to Fort William to be placed
under quarantine. The train parked opposite the railway stockyards and the soldier
diagnosed with smallpox was taken to the Fort William Isolation Hospital. On July 12,
1916 the train was moved to Island No.1 where the men could enjoy space outdoors
without the possibility of spreading the disease to Lakehead citizens. The quarantined men made the best of the situation by putting on their own sports day which
included football, baseball, track & field, and capped off with a bonfire and singing.
Thankfully there were no other reported cases of smallpox and the quarantine was
lifted on July 25, 1916. The men were now free to visit Fort William while the train
resupplied and soon after the train resumed its journey.

Patrick is a member of the Thunder Bay Public Library Aboriginal Advisory Group and wanted to be a part of a
new and exciting library initiative. He also wants to attract more Indigenous readers and researchers to the Library
through creative community initiatives. He loves the Library for its wealth of knowledge on a variety of topics and
the awesomeness of the librarians who always go out of
their way to help you navigate the Library and find what
you’re looking for. More recently he wants to know more
about makerspaces and 3D printing. The Library helped
him learn, through books, how to tie his shoe, throw his
first football, tell time and learn about his culture. He
says he loves Naomi Klein’s work, but is now more partial to John Borrows, especially Canada’s Indigenous
Constitution.

As you are likely aware, we changed our summer hours
this year based on past use of the Library during the
summer. We have gathered and responded to all of
the feedback, comments and suggestions so that we
can take this information into account when we determine our summer hours for next year. This pilot of our
summer hours was in effect until just after Labour Day,
when our regular hours of operation will resume.
We would like to thank everyone who took the time to
fill out and submit a feedback form. This will assist us in
making informed decisions for next summer on behalf
of the community.
All comments, suggestions and feedback are always
welcome - [email protected]
