transforming your library
Thunder Bay Public Library is on the front page of the
local newspaper a lot these days - and for all the right
reasons!
Our year started with a loud bang when we hosted the
Startup Weekend at Waverley Library. The budding
entrepreneurs showed up with a business idea which
they pitched to the participants. Everyone then voted on
all the great ideas. Those business ideas with the most
votes had teams formed around them. The teams then
got to work starting up a business and many continued
to pursue their new startup long after Startup Weekend
ended.
This is just one way that TBPL is helping to nurture the
local economy, which is one of our five key strategic
directions. Some of those startup businesses may be
coming back to Waverley Library when we open our
Small Business Zone (SBIZ) on the lower floor. This
will provide space for new businesses to incubate and
grow. They can feed off each other, fertilize new ideas,
use TBPL resources and prototype new products in the
makerspace.
To make room for the SBIZ we have moved some
collections to the main floor. This means that we now
have our highest performing and in-demand collections
- such as adult fiction, CDs and DVDs - in our prime
space. We now have most of the adult collections on
the main floor and we have consolidated the non-fiction
and reference collections for ease of browsing.
The SBIZ will not only be used by new businesses - the
meeting rooms will also be bookable by the public. This
is the first stage of a major makeover of Waverley Library
which will be rolled out over the next three years. We will
be making similar plans for Brodie Library, while at the
same time starting to think about the future of County
Park. This is all part of our infrastructure strategy to
transform our libraries into community hubs.
The makerspace has also made front page news with
programs such as Tear Down Tuesdays which continue
to generate repeat visits to the library.
Our latest headlines concerned Northern Nature Trading
at Mary J.L. Black Library, the exciting new partnership
project with Science North, which was launched with
MPs, MPPs and the Mayor in attendance, underlying the
value and importance of this lifelong learning initiative to
all levels of government.
There has never been a better time to visit your local
library - so come on down and sign up for a library card
and start to make use of the amazing wide range of
services and resources which we provide completely
free of charge.

Stories
1914 - 1918
Share your legacy.
Families and individuals are invited to
share their stories by contacting the
World War One Thunder Bay Centennial
project directly at [email protected]
People & Stories Feature
By the winter of 1916 it had become clear that the conflict of the First World War was far from over. Over four dozen individuals
from Fort William and Port Arthur had already lost their lives during, or as a result of the war. The impact of the war is most
prevalent in the stories, photos and records that show the real people who gave their all to the war effort in many different ways.
Members of the 94th Overseas New Ontario Battalion,
while in training prior to mobilization, had an opportunity to contribute to the war effort in a uniquely Canadian
way – hockey. During the 1915-1916 season the Thunder Bay amateur hockey league was made up of three
teams: the Fort Williams, Port Arthur Shuniahs and the
94th Battalion. The Fort William Daily Times Journal
and the Port Arthur Daily News-Chronicle covered
the season in great detail and inspired soaring support for the players of the 94th. Lauded as a “battalion
Thunder Bay
Centennial Project
of sportsmen” (FWDTJ Dec. 14, 1915), the 94th was
seen as a neutral team due to players recruited from
across Port Arthur, Fort William and other cities such as
Kenora. As the season progressed, the 94th improved
its combination play and came together as a true team.
They won two out of eight seasonal games; following
which they played two additional games against the
“old timers” hockey team of Port Arthur. Newspaper
reports regularly made mention of gripping games and
“real hockey”. A more detailed account of this story is
in development through the World War One Thunder
Bay Centennial Project and will be accessible through
the Life in Thunder Bay / Sports section
upon completion.

Cheryl joined the Community Action Panel (CAP) because she wanted
to be a part of a new strategic planning process that supports the
current and future growth of citizens and the City. For Cheryl, being an
active member of CAP allows her to contribute ideas and input into the
future of Thunder Bay Public Library as we move forward from planning
to designing, delivering and evaluating services which meet the needs of the entire community. Reflecting back,
she has always found the Library a haven filled with knowledge and adventure that supplied limitless information
and entertainment. Also, for Cheryl, it is not just what’s in the Library, but whom. The staff within each branch are
exceptional, and work hard to not only serve the public but to form wonderful, personal bonds – offering a community experience unlike anywhere else.
Some of her favourite authors as a child were Robert Munsch and any fable or fairy-tale written by the Brothers
Grimm. Today, Cheryl enjoys various genres like: fiction, history and social and cultural studies and is currently
reading works by authors Michael Pollan, James Tully, Thomas Pawlick and James Patterson.
Join the Community Action Panel Today!
The panel is open to all people who are interested in having their voice heard. You can contribute to making the Library more responsive to the community. Apply today!
