We would like to extend a special thank you to the Town of
Waynesville for believing in the Board of Directors & Staff of the
Downtown Waynesville Association for giving them the
opportunity to continue overseeing the successful and vibrant
downtown community where friends and families gather.
Constant and faithful accredited members of the National and North
Carolina Main Street Program, the Downtown Waynesville Association
embodies the spirit of a true Main Street City. From mountain music and
bluegrass, clogging, folk dancing, and international dancing – it makes us
unique. The DWA has the desire to retain characteristics that make us
special. By working to preserve the historic fabric and cultural heritage,
we contribute to the rich tradition that Main Street is the center of the
Waynesville community.
But Main Street is not just history and traditions; it is also economic
development. It is ringing cash registers, increasing tax bases, dollars and
cents. North Carolina’s Main Street Cities are chosen through a
competitive application process, with selection being an honor.
However, Main Street is not an award; it is a job.

OLDE BRICK HOUSE In 1991, Sam Stoltzfus started a full-time
business in a horse barn making nothing
but flower planters. In the years that
followed, Sam added a whole lot more
products, dedicating himself to a labor of
love: creating a thriving family
enterprise founded on hard work,
honesty & honoring the Lord. Today, Vintage Creations by Sam
is a major enterprise offering furniture lines for dining rooms,
bedrooms, living rooms, foyers, offices, bathrooms – even
attics. What do all the pieces have in common? Fabulous
finishes, with an antique appearance that’s stunning to
behold. Over the years, Sam & his team have become experts
in the fine art of producing distressed and antique finishes, from
milk paint techniques to crackle surfaces with durable catalyzed
lacquer glaze. Whether sprayed on, hand brushed or hand
rubbed, the finishes are the work of artisans who produce the
very finest heirloom quality pieces. You’ll be delighted to have
them grace your home. Olde Brick House has been working
with Sam since 2004. You can find a number of examples of his
craftsmanship upstairs in our room groupings. We’re happy to

The DWA organization, Executive Director and staff, Board of Directors and volunteers work hard, creating our own tools to progress our
mission. The municipal service district was implemented to finance our downtown program. DWA worked with the Main Street Program
to receive façade assistance to improve the physical appearance of buildings. We have recruited new businesses, retained and assisted
others to remain in the downtown district; stimulated development of the streetscape through the efforts of the Town of Waynesville;
designed custom made planters for Main Street and hired a local craftsman, partnered with Haywood Community College and Town of
Waynesville for a part-time intern horticulturist who later became the Town’s first full time Horticulturist. DWA designed the informational Kiosks for a telephone and posters. Years later, as pay phones became obsolete, an area was added to the kiosks to house rack
cards and brochures. A millennial lamp post project, in partnership with the Town, County and private individuals, began in 1999 with
the installation of custom lamp posts. New lamp posts continue to be added on side streets within the district when possible. Other
items added to the downtown area include mini-park furniture, memorial benches, trash receptacles, cigarette dispensers, dog waste
stations, public art, and bike racks.
As DWA worked with property owners to spruce-up the historic commercial buildings, planted street trees, developed a promotional
plan, and organized special events, they have become known as one of the NC Main Street Cities with the most events and festivals. We
are generating more businesses, more jobs in the community and producing one of the best downtowns in the state. Downtown
Waynesville is often used as an example of a model Main Street and sought after as a consultant to new Main Street Cities. Recent
accolades include Nominee as one of America’s Best Mountain Town 2016 by Outdoor Magazine; 2016 APA-NC Great Places Award for
GREAT MAIN STREET; “Best Shopping on Main” Top 12 finisher nationwide ShopOnMain.com
Since 1986, the revitalization efforts of DWA has generated more than $90,841,070 million in downtown investment. During the course
of our participation in the program, the district has had renovations of 170 facades and 260 buildings, with a net gain of 168 businesses
and 709 full time jobs. These numbers speak for themselves. Historic preservation and economic development are not mutually
exclusive theories. It takes energy to construct a new building – it saves energy to preserve an old one. We are striving for preservation
and sustainability!
And Main Street is not just window dressing: it is a downtown revitalization strategy that works.
So please indulge us if we toot our own horn. After all, we are 30 - we’ve got a reason to celebrate! And best of all, we’ve found you can
have your cake and eat it too!

on the downtown streets eleven times throughout the year. They are also the group that
changes out those AMERICAN FLAGS to the International flags for Folkmoot. If you do
not get an AMERICAN FLAG in front of your business on any of the past patriotic
holidays, and wish to participate by paying only $40 for the year, contact DWA. We will
put you in touch with the Kiwanis rep for Main Street.
For only $40 year, you will get an AMERICAN FLAG placed in front of your business on all of the
patriotic holidays and picked up, you do nothing. THANK YOU for filling in the holes in the long line
