Jock Garven - Principal 1240 Ocean Drive, Lake Cathie NSW 2445 PO Box 279 Lake Cathie NSW 2445 T (02) 6584 8060 F (02) 6584 8070 E [email protected] W lakecathie-p.schools.nsw.edu.au RED HEART DAY We are supporting Wear Red Day at Lake Cathie Public School. As we have someone very close to our hearts with a significant heart condition at our school we will raise money on Friday 26 February to support research into heart disease. Everyone is encouraged to wear RED on this day and donate gold coins to make a huge heart in our playground. There is a RED meal deal from the canteen and a selection of red foods are also on sale. The children will participate in RED activities on the day to help build awareness and support from our local school and community. Parents and families are encouraged to join us on Friday 26 February between 11.30 and 1.00pm to support our little mate and this fundraising campaign for research into heart disease. LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES Currently, schools up and down the coast are being targeted by individuals making bomb threats. These threats are taken seriously on all occasions and a set of procedures implemented by the safety and security directorate at the Department of Education are used in all schools. If an “impending” bomb threat is received, the school will go into immediate lockdown where all children, staff and visitors will move into classrooms quickly and safely where the doors and windows will be locked and blinds pulled down. If the situation is appropriate, the front gate will also be locked. The police will be called, the Director of Schools will be notified and we will notify parents as soon as possible and practical via facebook, the Skoolbag app and email as to the logistics of the situation. Student safety and remaining calm will be our number one focus. DATES TO REMEMBER Thursday 25 February Kindy Colour Day -Blue Friday 26 February Red Heart Day Thursday 3 March Kindy Colour Day -Green CANTEEN RED HEART DAY The canteen will have the following items available over the counter along with a Pre-order Hot Dog Meal Deal on Red Heart Day Friday February 26. Red Velet Cupcakes Red Frogs Red/Green/Lemonade Ice Blocks Red Jelly and Custard with a Red Frog Watermelon Strawberries Red Grapes Red Apples If the threat is an immediate “onsite” bomb threat, we will take Lake Cathie Public School Term 1 Week 4 Issue # 2 Page 1 measures to safely evacuate the site. We have consulted with Cowarra Park Preschool who we have a reciprocal arrangement with in the event of an “Off-site” evacuation. If we evacuate to Cowarra Park Preschool we will follow our risk management procedures to safely get the students across Ocean Drive just to the north of the roundabout with staff controlling traffic, then proceeding along Houston Mitchell Drive then right into Forest Parkway and safely into the Preschool where support facilities are available including toilets and safe play areas. At that time we would advise parents through the above communication channels as well as telephone services for pick-up. Lock-down will again be practised with our students tomorrow and again next week. Please feel free to call me to discuss the risk management procedures we have in place. PARKING Now that our numbers have increased, could all parents please observe the “Kiss and Drop” parking instructions on the side of the internal road closest the classrooms. This is a 5-minute drop-off area designed to have a movement of traffic continually. If you like spending a few minutes with your child or children in the playground or talking with other parents, we would greatly encourage this as this builds friendships and our school Spirit. If so please secure parking on the south side of the long parking area or on the grass overflow parking area near the bus bay. Please remember to always enter the school via the walkway next to the kindergarten rooms and toilet block. Please do not use the gates at the bus bay as we insist these are only for access to the buses. CAMDEN HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL YR 5 AND 6 PARENT INFORMATION EVENING Wednesday 2 March – 5.00pm to 6.30pm – Staff Common Room A letter is being sent home to all Year 5 and 6 Students. Details will follow as to the onsite visits students and families will be involved in throughout the year. HASTINGS SECONDARY COLLEGE A comprehensive information session was provided by staff and students of Hastings Secondary College on Monday this week after the Class Information Sessions held here at Lake Cathie Public School. Staff and students spoke passionately and in detail about the innovative and student needs-based programs on offer at the College. Details will follow as to the onsite visits students and families will be involved in throughout the year. and our carnivals certainly reinforce that. Well done to our competitors and a huge thanks to the parents who came to volunteer and also to support our children with loud cheering and support. SKOOLBAG APP Please remember to download a free copy of the “Lake Cathie Public School” Skoolbag App from the relevant App Stores for your smart phones. It is the easiest way to send in a note if your child is absent from school. These notes must be sent to the school within 7 days or they automatically become an “Unexplained Absence”. You can send in a notification of change of contact details and the newsletter can be accessed also through this app. SPECIAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – SCRIPTURE Thank you to our wonderful scripture teachers who started this week providing a very broad view of religion in a very appropriate way for our students. The workbooks used are great for our kids and are provided free by our local churches. Classsroom teachers stay in the classes during scripture to assist with supervision and to ensure the content of the lessons is appropriate for the age groups. Quality Special Religious Education is part of our curriculum and we are fortunate to have lovely local volunteer scripture teachers to provide this at our school. BUS BEHAVIOUR We have had an incident on Bus 71 – to Lake Cathie one afternoon this week where a few of our students encouraged younger students to participate in entirely unacceptable behaviour. This will not be tolerated. Our buses provide safe passage to and from school for all of our families. Our students should feel happy and safe during these times of unsupervised travel. The role of the bus driver is to drive safely to the conditions of the road and to ensure the safety of our children. Their job should not be to discipline students for unacceptable behaviour. Busways have been notified of this situation and encouraged to provide warning letters to parents of students who do not follow the code of conduct whilst travelling on the bus. If your child is not following the requirements of safe and happy bus travel, we will contact you to work with you and Busways to ensure your child displays appropriate behaviour when travelling on the bus. KINDERGARTEN COLOUR DAYS Wow! What a sea of Red last week. It is marvellous to see how many parents and family members came to join in the fun of our first colour day for the year. Thanks to Ms Gray and Mrs Haste for all the fun and friendship generated through these great colour days. SWIMMING CARNIVAL Mrs McCleary certainly organised one of the best carnivals I’ve been to last week with high levels of motivation for participation and a great feeling of support for all of our students to have a go. Swimming is certainly an essential skill for all of our children, particularly in the area we live. We are fully supportive of the need for our children to develop skills in and a love of swimming Lake Cathie Public School Term 1 Week 4 Issue # 2 Our Newsletter is proudly sponsored by Helen Shallick - Bonny hills Body & Beauty Page 2 Thank you for your support in this matter. READING HELPERS Last year our school was fortunate to have been given funding to do the Reading 4 Life program. This entailed tutors volunteering, being given support and guidance and then being buddied up with a student. Tutors worked with the same student, at a convenient time for them, for approximately half an hour once a week. A kit was provided including sight words, games and a record book for the tutor with students having their own book to ensure parent to school communication. All tutors found this to be a rewarding and positive experience, and the children made a new “big” friend to support their reading progress. We would like to follow the same structure this year and are seeking expressions of interest from parents or members of the wider community who would like to be involved. We do have a request that it be in the mornings where possible as this is the literacy time across the school, between 9:00am and 10:45am. If you cannot come then, we will work around your availability as we’d love to have you! You will need to have a working with children screening check and be available at the same time one day per week for approximately half an hour. If you are interested, please email [email protected]. au with your preferred time, day and request boy or girl. I will confirm times with everyone next week and have an information session/ meet and greet morning tea next Friday for those who sign up. Head lice have a 14 day life cycle therefore it is important for 3 treatments on day 1 day 7 and day 14 Treatment can be either with an insecticide or plant base product to kill the live lice. It is important that the directions are followed for each product. Resistance to products can occur so it is a good idea to change chemicals with further re-infestation The most important step is removing the eggs. I suggest coating the hair with lots of conditioner and detangle hair with a normal comb. Separate hair into sections and fine tooth comb with a metal lice comb. I suggest wiping what comes off the comb onto a tissue so that you can see the dead lice and eggs that are being removed. Keep combing each section until no more lice or eggs are removed It is easy to miss an egg or too, which may hatch a few days later, so It is a good idea to fine tooth comb the hair every 3-4 days Lice don’t jump, they need head to head contact to spread therefore pulling back hair and avoid sharing hats and brushes. Call in and see me if you need help choosing chemicals, are pregnant or just need further advice Karen Lake Cathie Medical Centre Pharmacy Our Aussie Hoops learn-to-play program is kicking off again in 2016, with the Term 1 program commencing on Tuesday 16th February and going through to Tuesday 5th April.
