June 8, 2013 • Mountain View Simmentals, Gettysburg, PA...continued
The Pennsylvania Simmental Association would like to invite all cattlemen, regardless of your breed preference, to our annual Field Day. Whether you have a commercial cattle operation or are a purebred seedstock
producer, we will have something for you!
We are very pleased to have Executive Vice President of the Center for Beef Excellence Ann Nogan, American Simmental Association Board Member Bill McDonald, and Pfizer Animal Health/Board Member of Penn State’s Rural-Urban Leadership Program Jean
Lonie as speakers! They will be addressing a wide range of subjects, including issues which affect all of us in the beef industry. Please
look for more information about our speakers below.
We are also very excited that Dennis Durham will be conducting a fitting clinic. He will
be covering tips and techniques to get your show cattle looking their best to step into the
ring. If you are new to showing and do not know where to begin, or are an old pro looking
for that extra edge to make your cattle stand out, you will not want to miss this opportunity
to see a master fitter at work!
The herd walk will feature cattle from a few of Pennsylvania’s leading breeders, including
Messick Farms and Powell’s Valley Simmentals. For decades, Messick Farms has been the region’s top Simmental producer, earning numerous awards including Supreme Champion Bull
at the 2009 Pennsylvania Farm Show with MF Prime Rib S70. With such a strong reputation for quality, Messick Farms’ consignments
are often sale toppers. Powell’s Valley Simmentals, Premier Simmental Breeder of the Pennsylvania Farm Show for three consecutive
years, has seen success in both the show and sale rings. While maintaining a high quality purebred herd, Powell’s Valley Simmentals
offers a few choice percentage cattle, including a cow/calf pair (purebred cow with half-blood calf) which was the Virginia Beef Expo
Simmental Sale’s high selling lot at $10,000. Breeders will be on hand to answer questions about their cattle, how to breed, promote,
and sell high quality stock, and anything else which may be asked!
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Four million visitors are expected in Gettysburg between Memorial Day and Labor Day to participate in anniversary activities. Colonel Tom Vossler and Dr. Carol Reardon, military historians
and authors of A Field Guide to Gettysburg, will be hosting the Gettysburg Battlefield tour.
The Junior Simmental Show will begin the day with the following classes: Purebred Heifer Class, Percentage Heifer Class, Bred &
Owned Heifer Class, Cow/Calf Class and Simmental Steers. Simmental breeders Tom and Barbara Vossler are offering use of their
beautiful farm, Mountain View Simmentals (directions on pages 4-5), for this PSA Field Day. Please come out and join us for a fun and
educational experience for the whole family!

A key goal for CBE is to ensure a quality product
from farm to fork. To accomplish that mission, CBE
will help assure that Pennsylvania cattlemen and packers stay at the forefront of principles and practices by
providing cutting edge information to the industry.
Another objective is to promote better understanding
and appreciation of the beef enterprise system thereby
allowing consumers and end users to make informed
choices.
CBE also realizes the importance of monitoring and
engagement in both governmental and community relations and stands ready to assist in advocating on behalf
of the beef industry. CBE invites you to join in the effort

in Animal Science,
Bill McDonald joined the
family operation and has been
a driving force in developing
the genetics and marketing
programs of the operation and
currently serves as the manager.
In operation since 1763,
McDonald Farms has been
transformed from a commercial operation to an all seedstock herd of 150 cows. Initially introducing Simmental genetics, the herd now maintains both registered
Simmental and Angus cattle.
he Center for Beef Excellence seeks to partner with others in the beef industry by developing
an infrastructure to enhance opportunities for all enterprise segments. CBE initiatives focusing on education, production and management, government and community relations, and
economic development will foster collaboration and ultimately improve profitability.
McDonald Farms was instrumental in the development of the Southwest Virginia BCIA Bull Testing Program. Until recent years,
Bill has sent many high quality Simmental bulls through the BCIA program. In the last few years, the farm has conducted its own “Pick
of the Pen” bull sale held in April, where they offer Simmental, Angus, and Hybrid bulls for sale. In addition to the bulls, McDonald
Farms also market commercial bred heifers.

I
t is official – percentage Simmentals will show at the 2014 PA Farm Show!!! SimSolution/SimAngus along with
Shorthorn Plus and LimFlex will show in the All Other Breeds division (formerly named All Other Purebreds).
All SimSolution/SimAngus cattle will need a registration paper issued by the American Simmental Association to

fastly growing segment of the industry. Please watch for the 2014 Premium List on the Farm Show’s website www.farmshow.state.pa.us.
PA Beef Expo Simmental Female Sale Results
Held March 29th, 2013, at the Livestock Evaluation Center, Pennsylvania Furnace, PA
26 Lots Averaged $1,906
Jim Sharp, Show Manager of the PA Farm Show, confirmed the acceptance of percentage cattle in the following statement: “The Farm Show Commission approved the addition of SimSolution, SimAngus, Shorthorn Plus and LimFlex and
changed the All Other Purebred Division to All Other Breeds division. All percentage (these four) and other purebreds
will compete together. These four percentage breeds are the only ones approved to be added this year. Entries will receive
premiums in 2014.”
The Pennsylvania Simmental Association would like to thank the breeders and Farm Show officials who worked to
bring this show to fruition.

Early summer deworming of nursing calves
ive deworming trials were conducted at the Eastern Research Station located near Haskell, Oklahoma during the
1990’s. Crossbred cows and their Charolais sired calves were sorted by sex of calf, calf age and cow age, then randomly allotted to one of four treatments: 1) non-dewormed control, 2) deworm calf only; 3) deworm cow only;
and 4) deworm cow and calf. Two or three treatments were applied each year including one control group. Each treatment
was applied two or three years. Cows and calves were individually identified and weighed in early June. Treated animals
received label-recommended dosages of a commercially available pour-on. Pairs grazed in rotation seven bermuda grass
pastures overseeded with clover at a stocking rate of 2 acres per cow-calf pair during the 144 to 181-day trials. Initial studies indicated that a low worm infection rate was present in the first two years. At that time fecal egg counts ranged from 0
to 28 eggs per 3 gram sample of feces.
Deworming cows in late spring had no significant effect on cow summer weight gains up until calf weaning time.
Treating cows but not their calves resulted in a small advantage in average daily calf weight gains (0.1 pound/day); while
treated spring-born calves had significantly greater daily weight gains (0.14 pound/day) while nursing non-treated cows.
In other words, just deworming the calves resulted in a 21 pound weaning weight advantage over non-treated controls.
Treated calves nursing treated cows had significantly greater average daily weight gains (0.17 pound/day) than the untreated calves nursing untreated cows. Over the approximate 150 day period this weight gain advantage would total about
25 pounds additional weaning weight to calves in this treatment group. In this series of studies, deworming spring-born
nursing calves in early summer resulted in summer weight gains of 21 pounds. Deworming both cow and calf resulted in an increased summer weight gain of 25 pounds versus non-treated controls (or 4 pounds more than when
the calf alone was treated.)
In these studies, reproductive performance was quite high for both treated and non-treated cows, and no difference was
noted. Different results may occur in different climates and under different stocking rates. In 2013, with some thin cows
going out on short, overgrazed pastures, deworming the cow may have a greater impact on cow performance.

Steve McGuire Celebrates 40 years at ASA
At their recent board meeting here in Bozeman, American Simmental Association
Trustees honored 40-year veteran Steve McGuire, for his years of dedicated service
to the ASA and to the Simmental breed. Probably no one knows more about the
inner workings of an Association, than Steve. Steve and his wife, Jackie, are avid
runners, and to that end the Trustees showed their support and appreciation with
a gift certificate for their next marathon. ASA Chairman Jessie Driggers said ASA
plans to get “another 40 years from Steve”. Source: simmental.org

Remove from skillet with slotted spoon; pour off drippings. Return beef to skillet; season with 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon
salt and cumin; stir in tomatoes. Bring to a boil; cook 3 to 5 minutes or until liquid is almost evaporated, stirring occasionally.

Reserve 2 tablespoons beef mixture for garnish. Stir sour cream into remaining beef; spoon into pasta shell. Place 1 cup cheese in center, leaving 2-inch
border around edge. Spoon reserved beef mixture onto center of cheese; bake in 350° oven 15 minutes or until heated through.
