on the upturn and ready for anything. A completepackage destination that will make any conference,

detroit.
While much is changing in Detroit, some things
about the city remain constant and true.
high-tech epicenter
The city’s main artery, Woodward Avenue, is now appropriately nicknamed Webward Ave., and the nation is watching as the list of high-tech
startups and business incubators that are taking over the area grows.
Inc. magazine has even recently dubbed Detroit “Startup City USA.”
Initiatives such as Wayne State University’s TechTown business and
research park are also building buzz, attracting today’s young innovators
and game-changers to learn, work, live and play in metro Detroit — now
the second largest source of architectural and engineering job opportunities in the U.S.
And new faces of Detroit industry are emerging and standing tall as the
innovative individuals that people around the globe want to learn more
about. Included are: Dan Gilbert, the fearless leader of Detroit-headquartered Quicken Loans, one of Fortune’s Top 10 Best Places to Work
in 2012; and Mike Ilitch, a true-blood American entrepreneur who made
Little Caesars Pizza a household name and is helping to revitalize Detroit
with world-class sports, entertainment and business initiatives.

Medical powerhouse
A hub for medical research and innovations, metro Detroit is home
to 67 of Michigan’s 175 hospitals, including the nationally ranked University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers in Ann Arbor and
the award-winning Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Hospitals. DMC
has recently been recognized as one of America’s Best Hospitals by
U.S. News and World Report.
Michigan is also No. 1 in the nation for medical clinical trials, with
more than 3,500 conducted. And with more than 40,000 licensed,
registered and certified physicians in the state, the region never
lacks for medical experts who are ready to share their discoveries,
knowledge and insights with a captive audience.
hoMebase for defense
Nearly 500 companies do defense and homeland security business
in metro Detroit, a center for the defense industry for 70 years. The
Federal Government, in fact, has several operations headquartered
in the area, including its Tank Automotive Research Development
and Engineering Center (TARDEC) and Tank Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) ground forces/vehicle procurement and
development. With some 86,000 skilled metro Detroiters employed
in related fields and some $5 billion a year in defense contracts going to the state of Michigan, the area is poised to play a bigger role
in this industry.
Manufacturing heritage
The quintessential manufacturing town, Detroit was recently chosen
as the headquarters for the American Lightweight Manufacturing
Innovation Institute to help accelerate manufacturing across the
country. And with good reason. Detroit put the world on wheels and
it’s a city proud of its roots in manufacturing; a city that wants to
celebrate its heritage with your attendees through unprecedented
automotive museums, preserved plants, historic landmarks and even
the childhood home of great innovator Henry Ford, the father of the
modern-day assembly line.
Forbes put Detroit on its cover
as one of the best places for
doing business, calling it a land
of opportunity.
Detroit has been the host city of an
auto show for more than a century.
Webbie magazine Techie.com named
Detroit one of the most promising
tech hubs in 2014.
Belle Isle became Michigan’s 102nd
state park in 2014.
Quicken Loans ranked No. 5 on
Fortune magazine’s annual 100 Best
Companies to Work For list in 2014
and has been named among the top
30 companies on the list for 11 consecutive years.
Metro Detroit is home to 67
of Michigan’s 175 hospitals.

Movement Electronic Music Festival
Musical Mecca
Detroit is a musical mecca; the undisputed owner of the Motown sound
and the place where techno beats first erupted. Aretha Franklin, Kid
Rock and Eminem call this area home and can often be found taking to
one of the larger, local public stages. A host of world-recognized musical festivals and events take place every year, too, attracting celebrated
artists from a variety of genres. Choose from globally relevant jazz sessions, gospel revivals and orchestra play with Grammy Award-winning
composers to kicking country hoedowns with reigning Nashville-born
stars and three-day outdoor techno parties with the most progressive
musicians and DJs versed in the electronic sound.
a well-rounded destination
Metro Detroit is impressive in size — covering nearly 2,000 square miles.
In fact, metro Detroit is the second largest U.S. metropolitan area connecting the Great Lakes system to the Saint Lawrence Seaway. An international destination that shares a border with Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
That means there are a ton of things to do and see no matter your
interests or tastes.

Metro Detroit is among the nation’s
largest theater districts with more
than 13,000 seats.
The Henry Ford is America’s greatest history attraction and is only 15
minutes from downtown Detroit.
Detroit is the only city in the continental U.S. where you can look south
to see Canada.
There are 136 bars and restaurants
within 1 square mile of downtown
Detroit.
To make planning easier, the metro area is split into five destination
districts. The district designations allow meeting planners and their
attendees to easily learn how to navigate downtown Detroit and the
city’s surrounding counties and suburbs, which offer a wide range of
dining, entertainment, ethnic and cultural experiences, hotel offerings
and recreational options.

The Detroit area is surging, with 21st-century industries and an influx of entrepreneurs, techies and
creatives. Concentrated areas of startups, independent retailers and entertainment options are popping
up everywhere, leading some to call Detroit “Startup
City USA” and tout it as one of the most promising
tech hubs in the nation.
New business developments, agricultural initiatives and large-scale city
improvement plans continue to surface, move forward and make headlines that further prove Detroit is America’s great comeback story.
Recent highlights include:
greening of the infrastructure
Detroit is positioning itself as a worldwide center for urban innovation
as thousands of lots and vacant spaces in the city are being repurposed
— some as parks and recreational spaces, others for agricultural production — and some are even being reforested with healthy trees. Community and urban gardens continue to sprout in schoolyards, parks and
on city corners and private lots, providing a unique inner-city network
for farm-to-table healthy foods. Working together, all of these managed
green spaces are improving the community’s social, economic and environmental health.
Hantz Woodlands urban tree project
is turning empty city blocks into
flourishing tree farms.
Michigan Urban Farming Initiative
is building a resource center in
Detroit that will act as an incubator
for sustainable agriculture methods
and training.
Eastern Market now offers
market days midweek during
growing seasons to increase the
availability of fresh produce to city
residents.

tech town
Metro Detroit contributes to Michigan’s title as the Arsenal of Innovation, with the largest pool of engineers and technical professionals in
the U.S. And many of these great minds are thinking green — designing,
engineering and building lithium-ion batteries, solar cells, windmills and
other alternative energy sources right in metro Detroit’s backyard.
• Tech Town, Detroit’s business innovation hub, provides technical business support and a broad network of resources to entrepreneurs best poised to energize
the local economy.
• Detroit Women’s Tech Mentoring Group is a partnership between Grand Circus,
a training institute for Detroit’s tech community, and Girl Develop It Detroit, the
local chapter of a national organization that provides tech education to women.
• Recent startups and other alternative energy-based businesses in metro Detroit gaining traction include Accio Energy, LithFire-X, Sakti3, Intellistreets and
Openworld Energy. Those based in downtown Detroit include Clean Emission
Fluids, Piezo PowerTech and ZeroBase.
• DTE Energy is building out $2 billion worth of renewable energy projects. They
range from solar power to capturing landfill gases, and they can be found
across Michigan, including in metro Detroit.

new sports and entertainMent district
Ilitch Holdings Inc. recently announced its expanded plans to develop
an all-new sports and entertainment district in downtown’s core. The
project represents tens of millions of dollars invested in transforming
dozens of underutilized blocks between downtown and Midtown into
five thriving neighborhoods full of retail, office, entertainment and
public green spaces.
The anchor structure in this proposed mixed-use district is a worldclass arena that will become the new home of the Detroit Red Wings
(they currently play professional hockey at downtown’s Joe Louis
Arena). The new arena is set to open in summer 2017.
M-1 rail
Construction on the M-1 Rail, a 3.3-mile circulating streetcar along
Woodward Avenue between Congress Street and West Grand Boulevard, continues to move forward. The $140 million streetcar is expected
to be operational by late 2016 and have 20 stations serving 12 stops.

meeting planners to transport attendees around the
area’s 2,000+ square miles.
Many hotels provide shuttles to and from Detroit Metro

From the get-go, our services team can provide a
variety of programs, materials and assets to meeting
planners that will help make attendees feel welcome,

•Welcome Signage and Banner Program: Create
custom street pole banners for placement throughout
downtown, design welcome signs in the lobby of each
host hotel. Even have our hospitality staff wear custom
welcome buttons.
•Welcome Speaker: Have the president and CEO of the
DMCVB or a local civic or government official formally
greet your attendees and kick-off your conference or
event in style.
•Downtown Visitors Map: Provide your attendees with
a detailed map that includes information about downtown Detroit’s restaurants, nightlife, attractions and
shopping.
•Welcome Letter: Generate attendee enthusiasm and
excitement by addressing them personally with official
letters of salutation from the DMCVB president and
Detroit local officials.
•Discount Guide: Take advantage of our member discounts to major convention attendees and guests.
Attendees will receive a discount card listing all participating merchants.
•Airport Welcome Program: Create awareness and
visibility for your event as soon as attendees arrive

ATTENDANCE BUILDING
When a meeting planner books a meeting or convention through the DMCVB, he or she can take advantage of the following tools to boost attendance.
•Attendance Builder: Depending on the conference

prior to help generate excitement for Detroit as a destination for your meeting, and promote registration and
attendance.
•Promotional DVD: Includes a professional video that
can help you promote Detroit as a destination.
•E-Marketing Blasts: The DMCVB can provide you with
a series of customizable e-blasts highlighting the top
reasons to visit Detroit and build excitement with your
attendees about the conference and its destination.
•Microsite: The DMCVB can develop custom convention
microsites that will promote your meeting or convention. On the sites, attendees can also get information
about planning their visit to metro Detroit.
•Public Relations Assistance: Meeting planners can
lean on the DMCVB’s communications department,
letting its experts serve as your personal local public
relation consultants.

Metro Detroit is a melting pot of ethnicities, activities,
industries and lifestyles. It’s what makes the area unique
and attractive when it comes to playing host to your
meeting or convention. Planners can stop worrying
about filling up attendee agendas and what to do with
free time, because metro Detroit never lacks for variety
and great itineraries of fun things to eat, do and see.
Each of Detroit’s neighboring five destination districts
— Dearborn/Wayne, Downtown Detroit, Greater Novi,
Macomb and Oakland — has its own character and
laundry list of hot spots and events, helping complete
the diverse roster of metro Detroit’s extracurricular
activities. And no matter what district you and your
group decide to play in, you will have the opportunity to
experience one of Detroit’s greatest assets — its people.

THE HENRY FORD

Urban comfort.
Metro Detroit’s Dearborn/Wayne District is down-home
historic. Here, The Henry Ford, one of America’s greatest
history attractions, invites all to peruse more than
26 million artifacts that personify the American experience — the Model T and the assembly line, the Rosa
Parks bus, President Kennedy’s limo and so much more.
Ford Motor Company claims this area as its headquarters, and college kids populate it as well, thanks to the
Dearborn-based campus of the University of Michigan.
Shoppers will find Michigan’s only Ikea store in this district. Plus, a full array of ethnic communities — from
Arab-American and Mexican to Italian and Polish — give
Dearborn/Wayne tons of character and options when it
comes to exploring dining, entertainment, cultural destinations and nightlife.

TOWNS WITHIN
DOWNTOWN
Detroit in and of itself has many
concentrated areas:
1 GREEKTOWN

with baklava, sweet egg bread
and tortes of all sorts.
2 MIDTOWN

cool.
Downtown Detroit is an international crossing that
mixes things historic and legendary with elements
modern and contemporary. A thriving, walkable
international riverfront includes water fountains,
butterfly gardens, a working carousel and a delicious French bistro. Architecture from Albert Kahn
and Isamu Noguchi lives next to all-night joints selling loaded Coney dogs and Prohibition-born speakeasies pouring locally crafted beer. Three Vegasstyle casinos run 24/7. Must-see museums celebrate
art, music, maritime and African-American history.
Urban parks and friendly neighborhoods abound.
Classic theaters, a bustling cultural district and hip
hangouts entertain, and three sports stadiums rock.

3 MExICANTOWN
The service is always fast and the
food is always phenomenal. Order the
botana (the guacamole is out of this
world, fresh, creamy and begs you to
double dip your chip).
4 CORKTOWN
Lots to do with tons of really cool
hangouts and friendly pubs, Irish and
otherwise. One infamous restaurant
serves up barbecue paradise. The
yardbird (mustard sauce-soaked
pulled chicken breast tossed with
mushrooms, cheddar and topped
with bacon), was a top contender in
The Travel Channel’s hunt for the best
sandwiches in America.
5 HAMTRAMCK
This Polish enclave is full of good
ethnic eats — think pierogies, paczki

kielbasa, kraut and dill pickle soup.
Just as rich is the music scene, where
little hole-in-the-wall bars host live
