A
s American philosopher Alan Watts
once wrote “The only way to make
sense out of change is to plunge
into it, move with it, and join the dance,”
which is a fitting way to open this month’s
column. As technology fuels a dramatic shift
in how one can access our programming, and
beloved members of the NPR family retire, we
at WHRO Public Media are responding with
new technology and new programs.
Car Talk went into “best-of” mode a few years
ago after the Magliozzi brothers decided to
retire. With the death of Tom Magliozzi in
November 2014, our thoughts turned to
the eventual replacement of another NPR
legacy program. Repeat programming and
references to 1980s cars prompted many of
you to ask me what might be coming next. So
while it was a difficult decision, we’re retiring
Car Talk on June 25. Since the original Car
Talk lives on as a podcast, you can download
that too!
This month we are introducing a new
multimedia app which allows you to enjoy
all of your favorite PBS, NPR, WHRO FM,
and WHRV FM programs wherever you are,
whenever you want! Just search the Apple
and Android stores for WHRO and download
the app for no charge. With one swipe, you
can access the programming you love on your
tablet or phone.
In its place, we will now offer On Story which
covers the world of filmmaking. Hosted by
Jeff Ramos, On Story invites listeners into
writers’ rooms, film sets, and gets inside the
heads of some of the most prolific voices in
film and television such as screenwriters
and directors behind Breaking Bad, Mad
Men, Deadwood, True Detective, House of
Cards, Freaks and Geeks, There Will Be
Blood, Silence of the Lambs, Ghostbusters,
Silicon Valley, and 12 Years a Slave. Set your
dial on WHRV 89.5 FM Saturdays at 10:00
a.m. starting July 2 for the debut of On Story.
A Prairie Home Companion (APHC) is a
program you probably thought would never
change. In fact, it’s so iconic, APHC practically
equals NPR in the minds of many listeners. As
you may have heard, longtime host Garrison
Keillor has announced his retirement. Tens of
millions of Americans have listened to APHC
and now the kids from Lake Wobegon have
graduated from college and they’re living in
the city. Their lives and interests are different
than their parents’—they’re younger and have
different media habits—but they still care
deeply about the core values that public media
listeners’ across the country share.
Finally, as I do with every issue, I want to
thank you for your support. First let me
offer a warm welcome if you are receiving
our member guide for the first time! Many
thanks to all of you who helped us meet our
financial goals during the pledge drive.
And now in the words of Alan Watts, let’s
join the dance!
Continuing the A Prairie Home Companion
tradition, but in a new way, is host, Chris Thile.
Chris is a genius-literally a MacArthur Genius.
He’s young, energetic and gifted with a range
of talents. You may have heard him as guest
host this season when he booked fantastic
guests including Paul Simon, Andrew Bird,
Brandi Carlile, and Maria Bamford. Garrison
Keillor’s last broadcast is in July.

On the Go with WHRO
As we all enjoy more of our favorite programs via mobile and on-demand, WHRO
has created a one-stop destination for all your Public TV and radio content, our
free WHRO media app.
For WHRV and WHRO FM listeners, the new app offers access to all six live radio
streams, and lets you listen to on-demand, locally produced radio shows. It offers
the latest NPR News articles and audio segments, lets you pause and rewind live
audio, and view the program schedule.
For WHRO TV viewers, the app gives access to a huge selection of the PBS
programs you love with hundreds of hours of on-demand programming, such
as Masterpiece, NOVA, and Antiques Roadshow, as well as all locally produced
programs like The Scene and Veterans. It’s also your destination for up-to-date
TV schedules.
The WHRO app is your personal connection to your favorite media. It can push
program reminders to your device, explore on-demand content, search for
programs, bookmark a program for later, and wake you up to the voice of Dwight
Davis or Sondra Woodward as your alarm clock.
The app is scheduled to be released on the iTunes store for iPhone and iPad early
this month, and just a few weeks later for Android and Kindle users – Just search
your app store for WHRO. If you use our existing radio app, the new one will come
as a free update. You can always visit whro.org/apps for easy links to download.
Farewell, Old Friend
One of the world’s most remarkable actors brings a stirring detective series to an
end as Kenneth Branagh plays his last season as Inspector Kurt Wallander, based
on the novels of Henning Mankell. Masterpiece Mystery! charts the final exploits
of the brooding Swede in three nail-biting concluding episodes, airing Sundays,
May 8–22, at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO TV15.
Dealing with northern Europe’s most violent and deranged criminals, Wallander
also battles personal demons and appalling health habits. Branagh’s portrayal of
this terrifying struggle is a heartbreaking performance.
In the final season, Wallander keeps burning his candle at both ends, dodging
knives, bullets, vicious dogs, homicidal motorcyclists, and a sense that he
is losing his focus. Will mishap, medical leave, suspension, or a well-earned
retirement be his final exit from this punishing profession?

New midday host on WHRV
You’ve probably noticed the absence of our midday host, Victor Russo, while listening to WHRV
during the day. We were sad to see him go, and wish him well in his endeavors in New York.
In the meantime, Jeff Sandner has stepped into the role temporarily until June, when Victor’s
permanent replacement, longtime WHRV producer and announcer Barry Graham, takes over
as your new midday host.
Barry will join us in June, at the conclusion of his long career as a successful civics teacher at
Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach. Earlier this year, he made the decision to hang up his teacher’s hat and start a second career with
us full time, doing what he really loves–radio! Be sure to drop Jeff a note and thank him for all that he does, at [email protected], and
while you’re at it, I hope you’ll drop Barry a note as well and let him know how welcome he will be as the new midday host at WHRV. Barry

Selected Shorts
Saturday mornings, 7:00 a.m. on WHRV 89.5 FM
We are thrilled that some lucky WHRV listeners were able to experience Selected Shorts live
April 30 when they came to Push Comedy Theater on Granby in Norfolk, as part of the Virginia
Arts Festival Fringe! Fans of the show were treated to some extraordinary talent; Valorie Curry
(American Pastoral), Michael Urie (Ugly Betty), and Sam Underwood (The Following) performed
moving, comical, and surprising stories about unexpected encounters.
Selected Shorts, a weekly public radio show broadcast on over 150 stations, is one of the premier
reading series in New York City and consistently ranks as one of the most popular podcasts on iTunes. The stories are always fiction, sometimes
classic, sometimes new, and always performed by great actors from stage, screen and television who bring these short stories to life. Evenings
are often co-hosted by writers, literary producers, and other interesting characters.

Virginia Arts Festival
The Virginia Arts Festival was launched 20 years ago and is now considered one of the finest
festivals in the country. Throughout those two decades of world-class performances, WHRO has
worked closely with the Festival, to the benefit of the entire community. Again this year, members
of the WHRO-FM staff will introduce the popular Coffee Concerts this month and next, at various
venues from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach. Join the Virginia Arts Festival and WHRO-FM as
we celebrate the performing arts in Hampton Roads.
Lyric Opera of Chicago broadcasts
Saturday, May 21 at 1:00 p.m.
This spring brings the return to the air of productions from Lyric Opera of Chicago. Founded
in 1954, Lyric has always distinguished itself by presenting the finest international singers,
conductors, directors, and designers in classic and less-familiar operatic repertoire and in worldpremiere productions. One such premiere occurs on May 21 at 1:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM – Bel
Canto, by Peruvian composer Jimmy Lopez. This timely opera wrestles with terrorism, the
tenuous relationships between people, and, in true Magical-Realist fashion, the power of music
to overcome conflict and adversity.

W
HRO remembers a dear friend and
lifelong advocate for education, Grace
Nichols Johnson Waters Bisese, 98,
who passed away peacefully on March 18, 2016,
in Virginia Beach.
Grace’s long career in education began after
receiving her master’s degree from the College
of William & Mary. She taught at Coleman Place
and Crossroads elementary schools for almost 20
years before becoming involved with educational
She convinced local broadcasters to
donate their studio time and equipment
during daytime hours, enabling teachers
to give lessons live to thousands of students
throughout Hampton Roads. Eventually,
she worked to establish the first Public
Television station in Eastern Virginia.
Initially owned by two public school
divisions in Hampton and Norfolk, WHRO
is now owned by 19 school divisions.
During her tenure at WHRO, the
organization was recognized nationally as
a leader in instructional television, earning
the prestigious Peabody Award in 1972,
and she also served the corporation as an
interim Station Manager.
After retiring from WHRO in 1977, Grace
served as president of the Woman’s Club
of Norfolk, president of the Tidewater
World Organization of China Painters, and
president of of the Residents’ Association of
Westminster Canterbury. Grace also was
a member/officer of the AAUW, Norfolk
Chamber of Commerce Women’s Division,
the Southern Educational Communications
Association, and many more. She is listed
in both the Who’s Who of the South and
Southwest of American Women and the
World’s Who’s Who of Women.
Grace is survived by three children, eight
grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren,
and two great-great-grandchildren. She
was a beacon of strength, determination,
and held a steadfast belief that knowledge
and learning should be made available
to everyone. Grace touched the lives of
thousands of people, and most of them
never knew her name. We at WHRO fondly
remember her, and are continually inspired
by her vision.

lmost four years ago, President
Obama made a proclamation to
recognize May 28, 2012, through
November 11, 2025, as the Commemoration
of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War.
The proclamation stated the federal government
will partner with local governments and
organizations to honor and thank those who
served in “one of the most challenging missions
we have ever faced.”
This past March 29, 2016, the day the last
U.S. combat troops left Vietnam 43 years
ago, the Hampton VA held a Vietnam War
50th Anniversary Commemoration and
Pinning Ceremony attended by dignitaries,
military officials, many Vietnam vets, friends,
and families. The atmosphere was one of
comradery, support, and gratitude as veterans,
civilians, and active duty military came together
to honor those who served.
When asked about what the day and the
ceremony meant to him, Vietnam vet Walter
Cuffee shared, “When I came back from
Vietnam we were ashamed to wear our uniform
because of the political climate in the country.
Today I was really touched by people realizing
we served our country in an honorable way.”
The keynote was given by Command Sergeant
Major Michael Gragg, whose father served in
the Vietnam War. He spoke of the struggles
Vietnam veterans faced upon return. “Young
men and women who had been exposed to
Agent Orange in Vietnam were exposed to a
Ray Jackson, who was a corporal in the 173rd
Airborne Brigade Combat Team, spoke of how
difficult it was coming to ceremonies in the
past. “I didn’t make it because I didn’t feel I
was ready to receive the welcome. Now I can
talk to my buddies who feel the same way I did
and let them know that everything will be OK
and we can celebrate this together.”
The day did feel like a celebration–a long
overdue one for many. CSM Gragg asked his
father for advice on his speech; his father said,
“Just say thank you and welcome home.”

What If You Can’t Call Home
As of December 2015 there were over 5,000
children in foster care (Virginia Department
of Social Services). Some reports estimate
about one-quarter of Virginia youth in foster
care turn 18, or “age out” of the system,
without a permanent home. “When a child
is not adopted and simply ages out of foster
care the consequences are dire,” said Nadine
Marsh-Carter, President and CEO of the
Children’s Home Society of Virginia. “One
in four of them end up in jail within two
years of getting out of foster care; one in five
14
end up homeless.” Additionally, only 50% of
foster youth complete high school by 18, only
20% of foster youth who graduated from
high school attend college, and less than 3%
of former foster youth attain a bachelor’s
degree by age 25.
Fortunately there are organizations to
help these youth. One local organization
is the Together We Can Foundation. The
organizations points out:
young people leave foster
“ ...these
care without a direction, without a
plan, without savings, without skills
and without a safety net of family
and caring adults.
“
D
id you ever have to call home when
you were 18, 19, or 20? Maybe you
needed money for books, gas, or
rent? Or advice about a teacher, co-worker,
who you were dating at the time, or just to
share some good news. Regardless of the
reason, you called home because you had
someone there who would support you,
cared about you, and could help. For many
of us it is hard to imagine not having that
family support. However, for many children
who reach 18 while in foster care, there is
often no one to call.
Their programs “focus on some of the most
critical factors that impact disconnection
rates: high school graduation or acquisition
of a G.E.D., pursuit of post-secondary
education or vocational training,
employment, and the capacity to manage
independent living.”
As with any struggling youth, mentors can
have tremendous impact on the lives of
foster youth. There are local organizations
that offer programs to connect mentors to
youth, such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, The
Up Center, StandUp for Kids–Hampton
Roads, the YMCA, and Communities in
Schools, to name just a few.

The Scene
Highlighting Artists in the 757
T
Heather Bryant and Lorraine Fink are two
artists who, by most accounts, would appear
to be very different but have much in common.
In Williamsburg, The Scene will be exploring
a bronze sculptor and a singer. Both artists’
stories are as unique as the other.
The Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission joins
us for second season of support as we look
inside the studio of a clay sculptor, watch a
young family melt and mold glass, and meet
a family of musicians.
Merrilee Cleveland’s work is mostly cast
bronze and ranges in scale from miniature
to monumental.
John Tobin is local artist and sculptor who
works in clay and mixed media out of his
home studio.
The Norfolk Arts Commission continues their
support for a second year as we delve into
the world of a photographer, an illustrator
and sculptor.
Robin and Julia Rogers met in a small hot
glass studio in western Montana in 2001,
where their paths intersected and eventually
merged in glass and art.
Greta Pratt studies the issues of national
identity and American myth through
photo essays.
The Hunts are an indie-folk band from the
southlands of Chesapeake, Virginia.
his month, The Scene takes on a third
season highlighting artists in the 757.
This season, we follow the lives of local
artists whose stories are as varied as the type
of art they create.
Sam Hundley is a professional designer and
illustrator, working for the Virginian-Pilot
during the day.
The Portsmouth Fine Arts Commission and
Newport News Arts Commission also lend
support again with videos from a quilter, two
painters, and two singers.
Sandy Curran is an award-winning artist, who
took the traditional form of quilt-making and
made it her own by adding paint, texture, and
complete storylines to her work.
Randy Hess is a local framer, furniture
fabricator, and antique restorer.
Sunny Gicz is the daughter of a local accordion
player and co-collaborator in the band Sunny
and Gabe.
Bobby “BlackHat” Walters is an awardwinning recording artist, vocalist, harmonica
player, songwriter, and even actor.
You can view these videos every Wednesday at

A Man of the People
a few weeks after convincing the legislature to
embark on sweeping reforms of high school
education in Virginia. Senator Miller was 68.
Former Senator and Christopher Newport
University President Paul S. Trible was John’s
friend for forty years, and remembers him as a
thoughtful and compassionate man. “He was
a man of real integrity who always wanted to
do the right things,” said Trible. “John Miller
was one of the good guys who cared about the
health and education of children, and he really
loved his family and our community.”
T
he Commonwealth of Virginia lost a dedicated
public servant when Senator John Miller
passed suddenly Monday, April 4, 2016, and
WHRO lost a friend and former employee. Senator
Miller was in his third term, a constant advocate for
public education and election reform. He passed just
Miller’s high school reforms will emphasize
development of core skills in the first years
of high school, and will set up multiple paths
to college or the workplace. In addition to
his efforts in education, Miller fought to
convince the General Assembly of the need
for independent, nonpartisan redistricting and
to crack down on predatory lending.
“He had a clear vision of the challenges facing
Virginia, and he put forward clear goals for
reaching solutions on issues ranging from
climate change to redistricting reform,” said
Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
Elected in 2007, Miller won re-election in 2011
and 2015 in a district that included parts of
Newport News, Hampton, York County, James
City County, and all of Williamsburg.
Before his time as a public servant, John
worked as a journalist at WVEC-TV for
18 years, and in the 1980s was a top aide to
then Sen. Paul Trible. He was also senior
manager here at WHRO and at Christopher
Newport University.
He is survived by his wife, Sharron, along with
two adult children, a daughter, Jenny, and a
son, John.
