Never Forgetting Why We’re Here
Each time I look into the eyes of
a Pathfinder resident, I am reminded why we are here, and
why after 30 years, our mission
is ever-relevant. It’s not simply a
question of achieving equal access
and rights, it’s about appreciating the value of each person. It’s
about finding common threads
and sharing. It’s about seeing
others as our brothers.
Pathfinder Village is a planned community that
was founded on the ideas of fostering independence and providing quality opportunities for people living with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. There’s a unique paradox at
play here in which our distinct community helps
people develop wider circles of peers and social integration in the greater community. The camaraderie of friends, the opportunities for engagement
and self-expression, and the natural rhythms of
life all lead to a positive identity and a sense of
belonging. This daily reinforcement allows each
person the confidence and capability to be successful, contributing members in society.
Every time I look into the eyes of a person
standing tall at Pathfinder, I also see those who
support him outside the Village community, and
am reminded that this is the Village at work. This
is why we’re here. Thank you for making so much
possible.
Warmest regards,
Paul C. Landers
President and Chief Executive Officer
Pathfinder Village
At-A-Glance
Mission Statement: Pathfinder
Village will promote a healthy, progressive environment that respects
the individual, supporting a life of
value and independence.
Services: Pathfinder Village is a private, non-denominational, residential
community and school that specializes in the care and support of individuals who have a diagnosis of
Down syndrome and other disabilities. In addition to providing quality
residential, health, and mental health
services, the Village offers individualized educational, vocational, recreational, and spiritual programs to
foster personal fulfillment, community inclusion and independence. In
2011, Camp Pathfinder was added to
our summer activities.
Population: Pathfinder Village presently serves a total of 93 children
and adults who have Down syndrome and other developmental
disabilities.
Location: Pathfinder Village is in
the township of Edmeston, Otsego
County, 20 miles west of Cooperstown. The Village is comprised of
300 acres with 11 residential homes,
a school, gym, bakery, greenhouse,
chapel, offices, Meeting House, and
an education and outreach facility,
the Kennedy-Willis Center.
Staffing: Pathfinder Village presently
has 150 full-time staff, plus 36 parttime staff on its payroll; it is the
second largest employer in the Town
of Edmeston. Its annual budget is $7
million.
Governance: Pathfinder Village is
governed by a Board of Directors
whose membership represents
regional professionals, business leaders, elected officials, and parents.
William F. Streck, Chair of the Board,
has served in that role since 1995;
together the Board has served over a
century on behalf of the residents.

Optical for over a decade, and was recognized with business owners Nancy and Dan Bliss in 2011 as one of six
statewide recipients of the "Works for Me” Award from the

Otsego day program that is now offered each weekday at
Pathfinder Village. The program offers socialization, leisure activities and support services, all without additional
daily travel.
Good byes and Thank yous
Pathfinder Village said its final goodbyes to two dear members of our
family in 2011, resident Mary Holman
and parent Mary Stohlman. Ms.
Holman lived a full life at the Village,
serving as an ambassador in the Hand
Bell Choir and participating in many
activities and celebrations. She is
remembered for her humor and her
love of all craft projects, especially
making hooked rugs.
Mrs. Stohlman often stopped by with
friends at the Bakery, attended Chapel
services, or volunteered at the
Kennedy-Willis Center. She made
beautiful applique wall banners for
the Chapel, a lasting gift based in her
deep faith. She also was instrumental
in bringing the Blackthorn Caeli
Dancers, an Irish heritage group from

Pathfinder Village Funds
Part of the magic of Pathfinder is
the heartwarming stories that are
part of our history. Each person
and place has its own particular
tale that reflects the richness of
our Village.
It has been a long tradition to list
Village funds in the Annual Report.
There are many stories that need
to be shared about these donors
who have helped in so many ways.
Collectively they have provided
stability to Pathfinder and individuals, propelled the Village forward,
 Nathan Cooper (1990)
and helped position it as a leading
 American Legion of Sidney (1990)
human services organization.
General and Program
Support Funds
Village funds have been established
to assist with operational and program costs at Pathfinder Village.
Named funds remember special
individuals whose spirit lives on as
these funds help Village residents
grow and lead independent lives.

Village Staff Appreciation
These donors gave to the annual Employee Holiday
Luncheon, a 25 year tradition that honors the service of
staff to Village residents. This event is a highlight of the
year, and is a time to enjoy a festive meal, visit with
friends, and share in the special bond that is intrinsic to
Pathfinder Village.

The Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open and Pro-Am
These donors generously gave to and participated in the 29th annual
Pro-Am, part of the Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open Golf Tournament. The
Pro-Am is held each September at the Leatherstocking Golf Course in
Cooperstown. To date, it has helped enrich our Village scholarship
endowment by over $2 million, and has been the means of helping
residents lead rich and independent lives.

Capital Improvements
Donors to capital projects at the Village have helped
provide new opportunities for residents in all facets
of their lives. In 2011, our significant improvements
included opening a new home, Gilbert House; adding
a four-bedroom addition at Wharton House; planning
for Eldercare enhancements and adding a solar hot
water system at Chenango House; adding a fire suppression system at Summit House; upgrading our
Village computer network; building a new multiactivity court; and starting a new vocational center
and greenhouse at the Village Commons.

Village Spirit Trees 
In 2011, the Village Foundation worked with
Chobani, Colgate University, and NYCM Insurance,
on a new holiday fund raiser. The Spirit Trees
were decorated by students and employees who
sponsored ornaments featuring the residents and
activities at the Village. We hope to increase participation in 2012; please contact the Development Office if you would like to sponsor a tree.
