Fall 2015
From The Head of School/C.E.O.
I
n 1945, three women, Serena Merck, Sunny Barlow, and Marge
Heckle Finger established a school dedicated to the education of
youngsters who experienced great difficulty in learning. The task
was daunting, but with the leadership of Serena Merck, the wisdom of
Sunny Barlow, and the determination of Marge Finger, these three
women founded Maplebrook School. As we celebrate the School’s 70th
anniversary, we look back on how many youngsters have been
benefitted by the programs Maplebrook offers; in fact, lives have been
changed.
The Forging the Future Capital Campaign will be soon drawing to a
close as we prepare to build the new salt water natatorium later this
year. One of the School’s long awaited accomplishments this past year
was the development of the Etkin Environmental Center on the postDonna M. Konkolics
Head of School/C.E.O. secondary campus. Organic gardens were developed, walking trails and
footbridges were established and a butterfly sanctuary will soon be
added. The students and staff are so excited to see their hard work come to fruition.
The Performing Arts Center also received a facelift with air-conditioning/heating units installed as
well as new stage curtains, lighting, and sound. We also established and
Inside this issue:
dedicated a memorial wall of honor for those individuals who, over the years,
have supported the School’s mission with devotion and dedication.

The most rewarding event was the awarding of diplomas to eighteen
graduates in June. Mr. Garrison Keillor gave a wonderful and humorous
commencement address. His message to the graduates emphasized being
safe, living freely, treasuring good friends, working at what they love to do and
doing it until the task was completed. The graduates’ hard work and
perseverance truly paid off!
Maplebrook is an extraordinary school with dedicated faculty and staff and
programs supported by the Board of Trustees, Foundation Directors, alumni
and their families, parents and friends. Thank you for believing in us and
helping to transform lives.

ECHOES of Maplebrook School
COMMENCEMENT 2015 - 18 GRADUATES AND GARRISON KEILLOR
Class of 2015
Mr. Garrison Keillor
"Well, we all knew it would come one day.
And here it is, Sunday, June 6th,
A day of sweetness and sadness mixed.
The elegant occasion of Maplebrook School graduation,
When the class frolics, our darlings, our own,
And Donna Konkolics and Dr. Fazzone
Hand out diplomas among spring aromas of maple and of brook
And we all look around at these young faces
Whom we've known on a daily basis
And who today are amazing in every way.
We don't know what to say,
Except that we are amazed
And you are to be praised.
You our children, the outcome of our ideals and our love.
And forgive me if I ask:
How did you all grow up so fast?
Moving on. Moving on. It's what we do.
Goodbye, old. Hello, new.
The great poet Robert Frost of Vermont said:
"The one thing I know about life. It goes on."
And it does. The brook runs into the river
And the rivers deliver the boats to the sea,
And so it ever shall be.
O Maplebrook, every time I've seenya
On Highway 22 east of Amenia,
Your frame buildings painted yellow
Your lawns as green as lemon Jell-O,
I want to raise my voice in a poem
To the Maplebrook family, to shoem
How proud we parents are of our descendants
And their spirit of independence......"
Garrison Keillor

C
apital Campaign Update: Maplebrook completed Phase I of the Forging the Future
Capital Campaign which raised $1.5 million for Whalen Hall (dining hall) and the Burnett
Internet Café. We began utilizing the space in June 2013 and it has become the social hub
of all activity. The former dining hall and kitchen was renovated as a dormitory for 10 male students
and faculty housing; it was dedicated in honor of Dr. Fazzone. All of this construction transformed
our lives on campus with such beautiful views of the campus nestled in the Berkshire mountains. It’s
hard to imagine our world without this space now.
Phase II of the campaign was initiated in November 2013 for another $2.5 million to construct a
new arts center, swimming pool and environmental center along with scholarship and other related
projects that includes theatre renovations and an arts gallery. To date, Phase II has raised $2.2
million and we now have the Hilfiger Hall Center thanks to a very generous $500,000 pledge from
the Hilfiger Family. Thanks to this space and the upgrades to the Performing Arts Center, all
students are now offered a full range of art/music/theatre.
The Etkin Environmental Center located on the West campus was dedicated in June of 2015. The
Center further demonstrates Maplebrook’s commitment to becoming a more sustainable and green
campus by recycling, composting, and growing its own flowers and vegetables as well as providing
a foundation for ecological stewardship through the study of flora and fauna along the walking
trails and pond.
As we continue to secure pledges and complete Phase II of the campaign, it is anticipated that we
will break ground on the Wellness Center (new salt water swimming pool equipped with solar
panels) in the spring of 2016. Recently, another scholarship has been established yielding a total of
$227,000 restricted for scholarship distribution. The Forging the Future Capital Campaign and its
projects has strongly reinforced goals like personalized learning and community —
GOAL:
both here at home and globally. If you haven’t yet given to the capital campaign,
$2.5 million for
there is still time and we truly appreciate your support and loyalty.

MBS HOSTS MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR BOARD MEMBER AND FRIEND
I
n July, Maplebrook learned of the passing of a valued family member, Jerome I.
Rossman, Jr. Jerry and his wife Eva, found the School for their son Peter back in the
early 70's. They were very involved parents and supported many initiatives. Jerry
served as a Board Trustee from 1971 to his retirement in 2012.
He helped transform Maplebrook into the leading special needs
boarding school in the world. He was Board Chairman from
1986 to 2006 and gave generously of his time and resources
attending conferences, several meetings a year and helping to
establish the capital campaign structure utilized today. He was
also a member of the George and Serena Merck Legacy Society
and is recognized among others that have made a significant
impact on the School in the Merck Interfaith Chapel on the
Maplebrook School Memorial Wall of Honor.
On September 15th, more than 50 friends, family and staff
members gathered at the Merck Interfaith Chapel on campus to
pay respects to this generous man. Mr. Stewart Sommerville,
Faculty and Chaplain, presided over the service amidst
heartwarming tributes and the amazing voice of Ms. Lauren Brush, accompanied by Mrs.
Anne Arent. A reception afterwards was held in Hilfiger Hall which included Mrs. Fields
cookies, one of Jerry's favorite treats when he attended board and finance committee
meetings.
