 Crowning Miss
Labor Day
Fiona Pelszynski As most of you know, the Westville Lions Club puts on a pageant each year in late August. This year’s Westville Labor Day pageant was August 29th at 6:00 in the WJHS gym where the reigning Little Miss, Fiona Pelszynski, passed down the crown to Sydney Vargas (7th grade). Madison Wilson (also in 7th grade) took home 1st runner up. Former “Little Miss Labor Day,” Fiona Pelszynski poses with newly crowned “Little Miss Labor Day” Sydney Vargas. (Photo submitted by Fiona Pelszynski) Some of the responsibilities of being queen include attending local parades, the Westville 5K, and helping host the Princess Tea. She will also be invited to participate in caroling this Christmas at the VA. Let’s hope her singing skills are as good as her “queening” skills! Talented Teens

Are you looking for a fun before school group to join? F.C.A (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) might be a good choice for you. The F.C.A is a group that meets every Friday morning at 7:15 AM (or whenever your bus gets to school) in Ms. Huchel’s room. If you don’t know where that is, it’s the room across from the cafeteria. The group facilitator is Mrs. Chernausky. Remember, just because “athlete” is in the name, you don’t necessarily have to be an athlete to join; every student is welcome. Tiger Spirit at WJHS
Cheer
Several girls from WJHS are currently cheering and dancing on our local Westville Youth Teams. The season began on August 23rd and will end around mid October around competition time. Kayleigh Davis commented, “Competition is on October 18, 2015 and we are not prepared.” We asked other girls on the varsity cheering team a few questions. Madison Conrad said, “My favorite cheer is VVI.” When asked about their favorite part of cheerleading, Breanna English said “My favorite part of cheerleading is the cheers.” Although the girls seem a little nervous about competition, we wish them luck representing the Westville TIgers!

Football
The Westville Youth Football’s varsity team has many members from WJHS. The Football team so far has a 23 win/loss record. They are coached by Curtis High (head coach) as well as a few other members of the community. We asked two kids from the varsity football team their thoughts about our team. Dylan English says, “The hardest teams to beat this year are Oakwood and St Joe.” Dawson Pruitt says, “I think the teams that were hard to beat were Oakwood and Bismark.” When asked what the team’s strengths are Dylan said, “Our strengths are the running backs of the team. They run qicker than anyone else” Dawson said, “The strengths of the team are the defensive and offensive lines, and also our running backs. Angela Woods Question:
Do you think students should get rewarded and punished for midquarter grades? Mekenzie High said, “I think it’s fair because if you get rewarded, it motivates you, and if you get punished, you work harder. Dalton Rolinitis thinks, “There shouldn’t be rewards or punishments for midterm grades because it’s not your final grade. “ Emma Meyers says, “I think that it is fair because if they try hard enough, they shouldn’t get rewarded. Girls basketball is in session for WJHS seventh and eighth grade girls. Coaches Mr. Schwartz and Ms. Gill have high expectations for their teams this year. Mr.Schwartz says he wants players, “To do well, work hard, and improve every day.” Mrs. Gill comments, “I want the girls to grow as basketball players. also be a team and be very confident.” She thinks that they are going to succeed. There are 8 seventh graders and 13 eighth graders on the team. When asked about their strengths, Gada Bryant said, “We are close to each other as friends.” She also is excited to play better teams and ride the bus to the games. Some of the players thought that the team seemed to do their best when they had positive attitudes and worked together as a team. Hayden Davis was selected as this season’s MVP, and he was voted as team leader. The team celebrated the end of the season with a pizza party. Westville’s Got Talent,

On September 22, 2015 the entire school went to
Downtown Danville. Mrs.Huchel and her group called United organized this field trip for the entire county. The 7th graders went to the Fisher Theater tour, and listened to a 9/11 speech. Meanwhile, the 8th graders went to the War Museum and met Vietnam veteran Doyle Cooper. He spoke about Medal of Honor recipients. Did you know that we have 7 recipients from Vermilion County? After the trip the students and teachers went to Lincoln park for lunch. Students felt the field trip helped reinforce a sense of patriotism and pride in our community.
