I would like to voice my support for the Meijer project. I am opposed
to city government acting as agents of local grocers to keep Meijer out
by placing restrictions on building their store. Certainly there were
variances awarded Murk when the new Village Market was built and there
was little public outcry over what his store would do to the local
bakeries, coffee shops, convenience stores, pizza shops and service
stations. I find the argument that Meijer will harm the well being and
quality of life to be laughable. Food and gasoline prices are the two
largest concerns for most of us in the middle class as we try to manage
our budgets. Meijer has consistently lower prices, better quality, and
even better service. I have never seen a dirty shopping cart at
Meijer. I have many friends working at Village and I understand their
concern. However, it is not the city's job to create a non competitive
environment. The 150 new jobs at Meijer will pay more and provide
better benefits than those at Village Market. Please consider my
viewpoint as you consider the rezoning request. Although we are not as
organized as the Murk group, and do not have the money to hire
consultants, we are many in number. Please talk to your constituents
as you consider your vote. South Haven is trying to establish itself
as a business friendly community. Blocking Meijer is not a message we
should send.

Rebuttal to Compton Inc. letter dated
August 8, 2011 from Stan Compton
It's obvious Mr. Compton doesn't understand a great deal about Retail as a whole, and
the total effect this project will have on our community.
In response to his numbers 5, 7 a-d, 9 and 10, I would make the following comments.

Meijer claims to add 150 jobs, however there will be at least 150 jobs lost between
Village Market, Save-A-Lot, Wal-Mart, Menards, and other local businesses.

Meijer historically prices to the markets it is in and my 53 years in the Grocery Industry
will attest to this. Meijer's prices for fuel are different in the city of Kalamazoo
(Westnedge vs. M-43 by as much as 15¢ per gallon). Grocery retails vary by town &
competition - Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, S1. Joseph, Holland are_not priced alike, so why
would South Haven necessarily be lower, nor may ad retails be alike.

Business can ollly work so hard and cut expense so much, their expenses don't change
Taxes, utilities, labor, rent, advertising, etc. and if the new Meijer takes 35-50% of their
sales, well, obviously they can't survive.

My only response to this is -It will bring more people into town, but the size of the pie
won't change - the pieces just get smaller.

Meijer does give to the local communities, but let's give credit to all the other local
businesses who have been doing this for many years and are a long time part of South
Haven.

$10,000,000.00 in new construction that's great but how much of this will be from local
construction people? Meijer as a general rule have the same major contractors build
their new stores.

Dear Ms. Anderson,
I am a resident of the city, and work locally for Clementines. I have worked there for 12 years.
During that period, many restaurants have opened, and closed for that matter, but never once has
there ever been city involvement in the opening of a new business. At Clementines, we hope for
an additional local business that could take some of the pressure to preform off of us. No one has
of yet stepped up to the plate to do so. If anyone would, would the city get involved and try to
detoure it?
I think the addition of a Meijer to our city would be great. I do business with Village Market, and
have since I moved here in 1989. I will continue to shop there. I would also like the option of
Meijer over Walmart. At least Meijer is a Michigan based business, so my money would in some
way help the state of Michigan, instead of adding to the Walton empire.
The Merk family did not shed a tear over the closing of Jack's or a couple other small business
because of them. I really have no idea why the city is involved in this at all. I wish my tax
dollars would go to something more worthwhile than this issue.

I am in favor of the proposed Meijer store in South Haven. I believe that it will be an excellent choice for
our community, providing us with an option to traveling out of town for shopping. The Village Market is
nice, but the prices are high and I can't always find everything I need. I don't patronize Walmart unless it's
absolutely necessary. That company treats its employees poorly and we can't trust them to look out for our
best interests either. Meijer is a Michigan company and has a wonderful selection of produce, which is
very important when our farmers' market is closed for the season.
Thank you for your time. Please give us the option of shopping at a local Meijer, instead of driving to
Benton Harbor, Holland or Kalamazoo. Let's keep business in South Haven.

I have been a resident of South Haven for the past five years, and love our little city on the lake. I
am writing as a concerned citizen about the issue of Meijer building a store in South Haven. I
currently choose to drive to either Holland or Benton Harbor to do my regular grocery shopping
at a Meijer location. I personally do not like shopping at Walmart and find Village Market a little
too expensive for my family's budget. I would much rather have the option of spending my

I am thrilled at the possibility of Meijer coming to South Haven. As the mother of two young children, I am
a couponer and bargain shopper to try to stretch our family budget. I think I am like most families in South
Haven, we shop where it is affordable. While Village Market is a great store, it is not my store of choice –
their mark ups are far too high. I think the market share Village Market enjoys will be unaffected by Meijer.
They gain support from tourists, singles, and older couples I believe. These people are not likely to switch
to Meijer if they hadn’t already switched to Walmart.
Beyond my personal desire to shop at Meijer locally, I believe in free competition. I do not believe that a
business should be turned away because another business is scared. Meijer will bring jobs to our area,
and more choice to our residents.
Please hear my yes vote for Meijer.

As a lifetime citizen of South Haven, I am strongly in favor of a Meijer coming to our
community. I see it as an addition to our local business and not a threat. We are a small
community where the residents have limited choices. I personally travel weekly out of town to
shop for things that just are not available here! Over the past few decades, I've watched the job
market dry up, families move, our school enrollment decline, and our homes being populated

Dear Linda
We want to voice our opinion on the benefits of having a Meijers store here. Jobs are #1
in importance, and we also feel that the other businesses will also profit. Village Market
has the opportunity to enlarge their fish market and bring in more wines and cheeses,
along with their deli counter to become more a Whole Foods or Trader Joe concept .
Meijers is noted for it's giving back to the community and if we are to grow, we need
them in this town so we don't have to travel to Holland or St Joe to shop.
