A Little Church History
By Susan Givler
At Mission U, I
attended a session
at which Rev. HongDuk Kim was the
speaker. Rev Kim is
the
only
United
Methodist
Missionary assigned
to South Korea.
The South Korean
United
Methodist
Church
is
selfsustaining and sends missionaries to other
countries including the United States.
Rev. Kim is assigned to manage the
United Methodist World Mission Office in
Seoul.
He calls himself an ordained
number cruncher.
While speaking, he asked if we knew
about Ewha University, the largest
women’s university in the world.
Of
course West Ohio knows about Ewha. It
was started by an $88 gift to Mary
Scranton by a Women’s Missionary
Society member in 1886. Miss Scranton
started with one pupil but the school grew
quickly so a principal was obtained. The
first principal Miss Lula Fry of
Bellefontaine, Ohio.
Her picture is
hanging on the back wall of the church.
There is a monument to her in our
cemetery.
In the 1970s Miss Lydia Newell, a member
of this congregation, visited Ewha on a
mission trip and was (to her surprise)
treated with great respect and honor
because she came from the congregation
of Lula Fry. Later members of the Ewha
administration including Dr. Helen Kim,
Ewha president, (and Ohio Wesleyan
alumna) visted Bellefontaine. So if you
ever go to South Korea…..
Thank You
We appreciate our church
family and all who came to
our 65th wedding
anniversary celebration
and all who sent cards. A
special thank you to the
Methodist Men for helping
with the setup.

Epiphany and Kairos Closings
If you have ever wondered if you
should deploy in serving in one of
these prison ministries, how about
coming to a “closing” event on a Sunday afternoon. It will be an expression
of support to the team and to the prisoners, but you will also
get the blessing of great music and testimonies. The next Epiphany closing will be Sept. 21, and the Kairos closing on October 5.
Both are in London. Convey your interest on your attendance
card with “E Closing” and “K Closing” and you will be contacted
with details
Thank You
Thank you for all the
cards, hugs and well
wishes celebrating our
25th wedding anniversary.
A special thanks to Audry
Overly, Susan Givler, Suzy
Hurley and my mom, Bert
Schwaderer for a lovely
party. Fun was had by all!

Your shoe drive benefits impoverished peoples in developing nations. Through your collections, these people are
able to start, maintain, and grow their micro-enterprise
to feed, clothe, and house their families. Your shoes are
consolidated and shipped to on-the-ground business operators where they are cleaned, repaired, or melted
down if necessary, to make a new pair of shoes. Used
shoes are in huge demand in these parts of the world. It
is truly amazing how the personal and public economics
receive a desperately
needed boost. Your
shoes are creating
sustainable economies in countries
where little hope of
economic stability
exists.
Bring your shoes to the church from now until October 5.

Pastor Ed-ification
By Edwin Beale, Senior Pastor
The classic invitational hymn, “Just As I
Am” was used by the Billy Graham
evangelistic crusades for many decades.
On their first trip to London, England, the
press began to accuse Graham of
“manipulating” the crowds with the
emotional nature of the song. The next
night, after the invitation to come
forward, Graham prayed silently and
there was no music. People still came,
and the press pleaded, “Put the song
back in!”

– Phil. 4:6
Some of my favorite words in the song
speak of “fightings within and fears
without”. Dallas Willard in his wisdom
said that a good question for evaluating a
person’s soul is – “What is bothering you
the most?” Many of us will describe our
problems as “without”, either
circumstances or people. But the real
problems usually lie within. When our
soul is not right with God, we are not
able to process what is happening to us
because of the “fightings within”. That
was what Billy was saying – Make your
peace with God through Jesus Christ, and
you will be able to do all things through
He who strengthens you.
