A festival of firsts for Caprices
Excitement has been bubbling up in anticipation of the rapidly
approaching 11th edition of the Caprices Festival. As the details of the
changes to this edition have become more concrete, a contoured sketch
has emerged, outlining a transformed festival situated at the heart of
Crans-Montana.
A new format for the Festival has been designed in order to integrate the village into the
festival. This new layout, where multiple stages, stands, and free events are based in the
village of Crans-Montana, is certain to a yield a festive atmosphere in the streets and provide
additional exposure to the region.
As for the music, we have a couple of surprises for festivalgoers, notably a first weekend
whose programming is centered exclusively on electronic music in the form of live shows and
explosive DJ sets. In addition to this “Clubbing” themed weekend, the second weekend also
offers high-quality programming with an emphasis on diversity. In particular, we are proposing
three unique evenings that will showcase internationally renowned artists, up-and-coming
acts, and favorites while maintaining musical coherence. On the roster: reggae, Balkan music,
chanson francaise, and hip-hop.
With only a couple weeks left before the kick-off of the Festival, I am very excited to present
this unprecedented format and to welcome festivalgoers to a revisited concept of Caprices.
See you on April 11th for the 2014 edition, which is destined to be nine intense, rhythmicinfused days filled with magical musical moments.
Maxime Léonard

What’s new for the 2014 edition
caprices is on the move
After ten editions spent at the site of the Régent, Caprices Festival will be moved into Crans-Montana,
transforming the village into an extended festival zone. For this 11th edition, which will take
place during Easter break, the main stage will be located at the Merignou parking at the
bottom of the ski lift at Cry d’Err. This move was made in order to bring the festival closer to
the public and to tightly integrate Crans-Montana into the festival, ensuring that the village will
vibrate to the rhythms of the festival.
4
More free events
A new, big stage open to the public featuring international artists, a slew of free events, DJ
sets, and concerts in the bars and clubs of the village… It’s a fact: the number of free events
has been increased and will lead to a constant, festive spirit in the streets of Crans-Montana.
5
musical programming
One of the biggest changes for this edition is the programming for the first weekend, which
is entirely dedicated to electronic music. With both live shows and DJ sets, the top ambassadors from this musical genre will take over the stages for three days, and alongside the
traditional “Modernity@Caprices” (April 11-13th), these artists will shake clubbers from the
early afternoon until the early morning. During the week and the second weekend, Caprices
will offer its tried-and-true formula of programming shows by renowned artists across a wide
range of musical genres: chanson française, Balkan music, hip-hop, reggae, etc…

The Caprices 2014 Poster
Capricia turns to art
Capricia, emblematic figure of the Festival, maintains her evolving spirit in the 11th edition of
Caprices. For this edition’s poster, French artist Emma Fremont was commissioned to make
the transition from photo to canvas. Excited to have been given the task to design the visual
identity of the 2014 edition, the young painter gives an exclusive interview below.
From where does your interest in music come?
Emma Fremont : I was born into a family of artists. My father is a sound and light engineer
as well as a bassist, and my mother is an actress and a singer. Show business has therefore
always played a role in my life and I’m quickly becoming a festival “addict”!
How did your collaboration with Caprices begin?
EF : I had the opportunity to be a part of the Caprices Festival decoration team last year (an
experience for which I have fond memories…). I created a piece to be displayed in the VIP
space and following that, I was asked to make the poster for the 2014 edition.
What artistic style do you employ?
EF : I explore different plastic mediums and primarily work with large-format portraits
Can you define “your” Capricia?
EF : I wanted to create a portrait of a Capricia who is glamorous, funky, and who sports festive,
psychedelic colors. To do this, I decided to use oils and a glazing technique in which you
superpose multiple layers of paint diluted by turpentine. It took me three weeks to finish the
canvas, counting the time it took to dry. I am happy with the end result, as it yielded a light,
translucent effect appropriate for the spirit of the festival.
Emma Fremont’s Biography
Born on September 22, 1991 in southern France, Emma
Fremont was raised in an artistic family. Earning a degree
in Plastic Arts and Applied Arts at the University of Toulouse
Il-Le Mirail, she explores different plastic mediums and
works primarily with large format portraits. Fascinated by
anthropology, her work investigates the roots of ethnicity,
the relationship between memory and knowledge, as well
as the female body and its sexuality.

THE MOON
THE MAIN STAGE
The main stage included with ticketed entry has a capacity 5,000, and will showcase the Festival’s main headliners as well as DJs playing live and electronic music sets. Designed with
high-quality acoustics, this exceptional place will vibrate festivalgoers from 20:00 with the
sounds of hip-hop, electronic music, reggae and chanson française from April 11-12th and
April 17-19th. This area will also house the VIP space as well as the “Square”, a centralized
meeting point where one can share a meal or a drink with friends at one of the varied culinary
and beverage stands.
10
Six headlining acts not to miss on the Moon stage
IAM
Riding on 25 years of rap notoriety and the success of last April’s release of “Art Martiens”,
which received both critical and fan support (more than 100,000 copies sold), the Marseillebased IAM are returning on November 18, 2013 with the release of their newest opus entitled
“... IAM”. Announced to be the last studio album of the famed Phoceans, it will include 16
new tracks that encapsulate the essence of IAM’s style: acerbic lyrics and powerful moods,
such as:“Si j’avais 20 ans”,“Fuck le refrain”,“Cash”, and “Peines Profondes”. Known for the
rare intensity of their live performances, these godfathers of French rap will take to the stage
on “Le Moon” on April 19, 2014, before finishing their current tour. It goes without saying that
this unique tour for Akhenaton, Shurik’n, Kheops, Imhotep and Kephren will be an impossible
to miss and unforgettable closure to the Caprices Festival.
Plaza Francia - A New Tango Song Book
Catherine Ringer (Les Rita Mitsouko) sings Müller & Makaroff (DE Gotan Project)
Take an Argentine, a Swiss, and a French, add a dash of tango and a splash of
anticonformity, mix it all up, and you get Plaza Francia! This new project is the
collaboration between the co-founders of Gotan Project (Argentine Eduardo Makaroff
and the Swiss Christoph H. Müller) and Catherine Ringer, the mythical voice of Rita
Mitsouko. This magical trio offers its audience a full, round-trip ticket to Buenos Aires
in just the length of its eponymous album, an album that was arranged by Gustavo
Beytelmann and that seamlessly blends organic tango with the spirit and gall of rock.
Müller reminds us, however, that it’s “not typical, not nostalgic, not Gotan, and not Rita
Mitsouko”. It’s Plaza Francia!
GEORGE CLINTON PARLIAMENT / FUNKADELIC
George Clinton revolutionized African-American music in the 1970s. Considered one
of the fathers of funk, he created an eccentric subgenre of funk (Pfunk), that integrated
rock music into repetitive and tribal funk, with a touch of ambient fuzz guitar, wah-wah,
muted brass, and harmonized soul vocals. Following a disagreement with his record
label, he left his first group Parliament and created Funkadelic, only to reunite in 1974
with a new set of musicians on the roster (Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, and Pee Wee
Ellis). In the 80s, Clinton created a new collective called the P.Funk All Stars. He released
several funky soul albums in collaboration with Herbie Hancock, Public Enemy, Flavor
Fav, and Prince. In the 90s, the rise of funk rap/rock made Clinton a force again: MC
Hammer, LL Cool J and Snoop Dogg released tracks using his music. Clinton has been
dedicated to taking funk to unexplored frontiers for more than 40 years.
Ziggy Marley
David Marley (named in honor of David Bowie), aka Ziggy, received guitar and drum lessons
as a child from his dad Bob Marley. In 1979, Ziggy joined Bob alongside his sister, brother,
and stepsister to record “Children Playing in the Streets.” As “The Melody Makers”, the four
brothers and sisters released successful albums including: «Conscious Party», «One Bright
Day,» «Free Like We Want 2 B», and «Fallen Is Babylon». Ziggy started the label “Ghetto Youth
United” to promote the next generation of reggae talent. In 2003, he started his solo career
and released the album “Dragonfly”. Following the release of “Love is My Religion” and
“Family Time”, his latest album,“Wild and Free”, was released in 2011. His best-known songs
are “Beach in Hawaii”, “True to Myself” and “Love is My Religion”. Ziggy has successfully
amassed millions of fans and his live shows are a spectacle not to be missed.
GRAND CORPS MALADE
Born under the sun of Seine-Saint-Denis in 1977 under the real name of Fabien
Marsaud, Grand Corps Malade released his first album “Midi 20” in 2006, and sold
more than 700,000 copies. This double platinum album earned him praises including
“revolutionary album” and “revolutionary stage performance”. Two years later, in 2008,
he released “Enfant de la Ville” and was entitled a “Chevalier” of the “Arts and Letters”.
His two first albums successfully crossed the Atlantic, where in 2009, for the second
consecutive year, he received the “Felix Francophone Artist of the Year” award (equivalent
to “Victoires” in music). In 2010, his third album, entitled “3e Temps”, produced by
Dominique Blanc-Francard, reconfirmed the exceptional vocal and songwriting skills
of this talented artist. To this day, Grands Corps Malade has sold more than 1.2 million
albums and has played more than 400 concerts in France and internationally. Every
year, his lyrics are used as material for high-school French classes. His fourth album,
entitled “Funambule” was released in late October 2013. For this opus, he collaborated
with classical jazz trumpet player Ibrahim Maalouf, who was responsible for the musical
direction and composed the majority of the songs.
SKA-P
Ska-P was founded in Madrid, Spain in 1994, bringing together Pulpul (vocals), Yanclas
(guitar), Julio (bass), Kogote (keys), and Pako (drums). With members originating from
blue-collar neighborhoods and punk, anarchist, and alternative cultures, this band has
not stopped fighting against system and its injustices for more than 20 years! This
engaging group self-produced and released their first album in early 1994, after which
they stunned audiences with performances that mix their characteristic festive, skapunk sound with revolutionary lyrical themes. In 1997, Ska-P was picked up by a record
label and released their first proper album: “El Vals Del Obrero”. The title “Cannabis”,
taken from this album, gained the group notoriety beyond the borders of Spain and lead
to a world tour. After multiple album releases and a musical sabbatical in 2005, Ska-P
came back in 2008 to the great pleasure of their fans. The major strength of the group lies
in their live performances where they engage their audiences with their infectious energy.

Modernity@Caprices
An ephemeral club at dizzying heights
For the last five years, Modernity@Caprices has offered electronic music aficionados a
clubbing experience at high elevation. Following the lead from the main Festival, this edition
will see Modernity on the move, taking headquarters on the terrace of Violette, located at
2,200 meters.
The concept remains the same: the finest contemporary DJs on the decks under a transparent tent, offering clubbers a daytime dance experience with a fantastic few over some of the
highest peaks of Europe. The previewed line-up for April 11 includes sets from Richie Hawtin,
Loco Dice, Benoit & Sergio, and Shlomi Aber. On April 12, Ricardo Villalobos will take over
the decks alongside a feminine contingent of Magda, tINI and Masaya. On April 13th, Sven
Väth will play an exceptional set with Ezikiel and Alejandro Mosso in company. Modernity is
back from mid-day until the evening with its indescribable mixture of sonic and visual ecstasy!
12
Seven DJs who will electrify THE "ElectroniC" week-end
Richie Hawtin
Richie Hawtin (born on June 4th, 1970) is a Canadian DJ and techno producer who
also goes under the pseudonyms Plastikman and F.U.S.E. Artist, DJ and visionary, Richie
Hawtin is an innovator who is in constant evolution. At the age of 15 he frequented the
clubs of Detroit (in particular the Music Institute), and became a DJ at 17. At the end
of the 80s, he founded the Plus 8 label with John Acquaviva and organized warehouse
parties in Detroit. His first tracks were released in 1993, under the pseudonyms of
Plastikman and F.U.S.E. Since then, he has produced various experimental albums,
created the label Minus, and has mixed in the most famous clubs on the planet. In his
sets, Richie Hawtin mixes electronic instruments with vinyl.
Carl Cox
Professional DJ since teenager, veteran of acid house, and champion of techno: Carl Cox is
indisputably one of the greats. Born July 29, 1962 in Manchester, England, Carl Cox began mixing
at the age of 15 when he received a set of turntables as a gift. He explored disco, funk, and hiphop before catching the house fever that took over Great Britain. He moved to Brighton in 1986
and gained massive popularity in the late 80s. He played in front of fifteen thousand people at
an open-air show in 1989. At the beginning of the 90s, he created his own label, Worldwide
Ultimatum, and his DJ agency Ultimate. Since then, he has been a prolific producer and has held
multiple residences in several of the most famous clubs in the world. Moreover, his radio show
‘Global’ showcases records and has built a listenership of more than 12 million people. Carl does
not show any signs of slowing down, as he confirms himself:“After seasons at Ibiza, the festivals,
my own events, albums, and remixes, the story will continue – there is so much more to come.”
Gesaffelstein
Under the pseudonym Gesaffelstein, a portmanteau formed by the association
“Gesamtkunstwerk”, a German term for “the total work of art” and Albert Einstein, the symbol
for the absolute in human intellect, musician and producer Mike Levy reconciles techno
with its industrial roots. Repurposing the fundamental sounds from Front 242, Nitzer Ebb
and DAF, Mike Levy uses a classical techno and electro vocabulary as a tool to develop a
unique sonic universe that is both rich and intriguing. Exploring the intersection of these
rhythms and styles, Mike Levy’s first uncompromising album,“Aleph” was released in October
of 2013. Mike Levy was born in Lyon in 1985, the same year that the first major artists were
being recognized in house music. He was recently introduced to the public at large with
a collaboration with Kanye West on two of the tracks on the album “Yeezus” released in
2013: the incredibly abrasive “Send it up” and “Black Skinhead”, co-produced with Daft Punk
and his friend Brodinski. During his sets, Gesaffelstein creates a musical atmosphere that
surpasses the usual expectations of the dance floor, with a sound that at once violent and
brutal, but also sublime in its precise and delicate delivery.
Marco Carola
Marco Carola is a famed techno ambassador who played a pivotal role in developing
the electronic music scene in Italy during the 90s, and who was responsible for exposing
the world to the Napolitano techno sound. More than 20 years later, Marco Carola is still
one of the most respected artists in the techno scene. In addition to the release of more
than five critically acclaimed albums, the most recent of which entitled “Play It Loud”,
Marco has curated mixes for record labels such as Cocoon and Party Animals. In 2006,
Carola combined shining electronics with minimalism for his milestone mix for the
legendary compilation of the “Fabric” club in London. Marco is in high demand to mix
across the world, where he celebrated for an impressively energetic style. His sets can
last more than eight hours, electrifying the crowds and his thousands of fans in Ibiza,
New York, South America, and beyond.
Sven Väth
Founder of the Cocoon record label, owner of the Frankfurt club of the same name,
and internationally renowned DJ, Sven Väth has been a pillar of electronic music for 25
years. This godfather of Tech House, who already began mixing at the age of 18 in the
celebrated club Dorian Gray (Frankfurt), has pushed electronic music to new horizons
by exposing passionate crowds worldwide to the underground and hardcore sounds of
Techno. Always creative, Sven Väth regularly releases productions and crisscrosses the
globe to electrify the most-important and largest stages on the planet. Each Sven Väth
DJ set is a unique and extraordinary event: one that cannot be missed if you wish to
understand both the origins and future of techno music.
Loco Dice
Loco Dice (Yassine Ben Achour) is a German DJ and electronic music producer and one
of the main pillars of the electronic music scene. Clubbers who have had the chance
to see Loco Dice mix in his six-year residencies at Tribehouse (Düsseldorf) or at DC-10
(Ibiza) have been continually captivated in by his sets. With his direct approach, Loco
Dice is capable of bringing clubbers together into his world and on the same wavelength.
Through his DJ sets and productions on labels such as Minus, Cadenza, Ovum, Four
Twenty and Cocoon, he utilizes his delicate ear to create a fusion between atmospherics
and reflection, underlined by solid grooves inspired by hip-hop, his first musical passion.
Listening to his music, one can imagine its cinematographic counterparts and understand
the link between his carefully constructed pieces and his first inspired fantasies.
JEFF MILLS
Jeff Mills is one of the most famous contemporary DJ/producers in the world and one
of the pioneers of Detroit techno. Jeff started his career as a DJ for Detroit radio station
WDRQ in 1984. In the same period, he and his sidekick “Mad Mike Banks” created the
collective “Underground Resistence”, which became a key institution in the electronic
music scene. Jeff Mills plays an average of 100 sets per year in clubs across the globe.
Nevertheless, his career goes much further than just techno music. In the last decade,
Jeff has become progressively more involved in film, and in particular, in blending
image with sound. His developing interests have spawned numerous collaborations
and created strong ties to contemporary art. In 2007, he received the title of “Chevalier
des Arts et des Lettres” by the French minister of culture. Incessantly busy, Jeff Mills is
involved in a number of projects, including several film soundtracks in collaboration
with Cinémathèque and the Cité de la Musique in Paris.
13
après-ski
the small stage is now big and will be centered in the heart
of the village
This free space is designed to be the ideal spot to meet and share a relaxed or festive aperitif. At
the stage in this open space, the public can attend intimate concerts and DJ sets between
the hours of 16:00 and 21:00. Every evening (except Monday), a New Talent Contest competitor will perform on stage alongside a Swiss artist, as well as an international artist.
Situated at the parking lot of the ski lift, the area has been constructed in collaboration with
Orange and H&M. As a Caprices Festival partner since the previous edition, the Swedish giant
is forging synergies between clothes and music by investing in a convivial and trendy space.
As another Festival partner, Orange co-organizes with Caprices for the Orange New Talent
Contest, a competition where tomorrow’s stars are given the opportunity to rile up festivalgoers with their live shows on the Après-ski stage.
In addition to the stage, the space will contain an H&M shop, a cozy lounge provided by
Orange, and many planned events to engage the public. This environment provides a perfect
warm up for a festive evening at The Moon or one of the satellite stages.
14
A focus on five artists that will set the après-ski stage afire
The Strypes
If this name is not yet familiar to you, make note of it because you’ll be hearing more of
them… The Strypes is an Irish group formed in 2008 in Carvan by Ross Farrelly (vocals/
harmonica), Josh McClorey (guitar/vocals), Pete O’Hanlon (bass/harmonica) and Evan
Walsh (drums). Their influences include 60s blues and 70s pub rock, amongst others.
After modest underground beginnings, the group released an EP of covers entitled
“Young, Gifted and Blue” in April of 2012. Only one day after its release, the EP topped
the ITunes Blue Chart. Following this success, they signed to Rocket Music Management,
the management company of Elton John. In March of 2013, they released their first
single “Blue Collar Jane” followed in May by “Hometown Girl” on Mercury Records. Their
first album, “Snapshot” was produced by Chris Thomas (The Beatles, The Sex Pistols,
Elton John…) and was released on September 9, 2013.
Dub Inc.
Dub Inc. is one the finest French reggae revival acts to surface for years. With poignant
lyrics delivered with punchy melodies from singers Bouchkour and Komlan, this group of
friends breathes new life into the French reggae scene. On stage, these natives of SaintEtienne truly come alive; they put on electrifying shows that fueled their musical career
and have continued to bring people together. By touring in France and throughout
Europe, Dub Inc. rapidly established themselves as a competent act for large audiences.
HENRI DèS
Since the 80s, Henri Dès, with the sparkle in his eye and his catchy tunes, has been a
successful artist for children. His simple, yet efficient songwriting (with choruses that
stick in everyone’s mind), his innovative musical arrangements, and his fantastical
and everyday themes have made Henri Dès a favorite amongst young audiences. By
touring throughout Switzerland, France, Belgium and Québec, he has developed a deep
relationship with his audiences, adding a unique dimension to his live shows. His most
famous songs are “Les bêtises à l’école”, “La petite Charlotte”, “Le grand frère et la
petite sœur”, “Le beau tambour”, “Un moineau sur ton dos”, “Lisette”, “Polyglotte”, “La
glace au citron”,“On ne verra jamais”, and “Le petit zinzin” amongst many more.
Kalabrese and his RumpelorchestER
DJ, producer and owner of the club ZUKUNFT, Kalabrese is one of the most well-respected
and sought-after artists in the Zürich music scene. His second album “Independent
Dancer” was released in May of 2012, and sounds like a trip to another world, a world of
positive light and fantasy. In the past three years, Kalabrese played in different clubs and
festivals including Sonar, Electrowave Florence, Transmediale Berlin, etc. Furthermore,
he has released a number of remixes for artists and labels: Tosca, Crosstown Rebels,
dOP, Drumpoet Community, Filewile, Luke Solomon, Gregorythme and the excellent
“elleli” which was selected for release by the famous label Innervision.
Danakil
Danakil was founded in 2000 by eight students from the Paris area. Like many other
groups, they began by playing local gigs and building a local audience.Their first album,
“Micro Climat” was released in 2006. By word of mouth, they built a fan base, changing
their career path toward a more professional route. Danakil became a live act known
for their energy and charisma on stage, leading to requests to open for bigger artists
including Percubaba and the French rap collective Saïan Supa Crew. In 2008, Danakil
released their second album “Dialogue de Sourds”, an album that maintained their
engaging style. Two years after the latest release, “Echos du Dub” (the dub version
of their “Echos du Temps” album released in 2011), the new album “Danakil” will be
released in 2014 on their own label “Baco Records”. This will be the fifth studio album
for the French collective.
15
ROCK THE BLOCKS
The Rock the Block concept makes its comeback to Caprices and this time, it will be integrated into three clubs in the village: Pacha, l’Xellent, and Monk’is. With free entry to those
older than 18, these events will be characterized by their high quality line-ups, sound systems, and renowned DJs playing sets in intimate settings.
Other bars and restaurants as well as the cinema in Crans-Montana will be associated with
the festivities and will offer special programs throughout the festival.
16
Valais Zone
Located in the center of Crans-Montana, this area of the festival will be occupied by our
partner Coop, who will serve local and Swiss products and regional cuisine under the label
“ma région”. In addition, free shows by local and international brass bands will take place in
this area. The finest representatives from this traditional Valaisian music style will be there to
ensure a festive mood.
17
ORANGE NEW TALENT CONTEST
contest celebrates its 10th year
The Orange New Talent Contest is a competition for up-and-coming musical talent
conceived 10 years ago and co-organized by Orange and the Caprices Festival. Following
the successful model of the 2013 edition, and because talent knows no borders, the Orange
New Talent Contest is open to promising Swiss musicians as well as international new talent.
Artists from outside our borders (bordering countries, England and Spain), are able to participate in the competition so long as the group composes their own music.
Throughout the duration of the competition, Internet voters and a jury composed of professionals from the music and media industries will judge the competitors and will select eight
finalists who will have the chance to play on the Après-ski stage. The winner of the competition will be awarded a 10,000 CHF prize in order to invest in the development of a musical
project. The jury will assess the needs of the developing artists. For example, the money may
go to producing a music video, releasing a single, management or advice, photography, text
writing, rehearsals, tour, etc.

In addition, the winner will secure the possibility to open for a renowned artist on the main
stage of the Festival in 2015, providing the winner with a unique media exposure. The Orange
New Talent contest has proven itself to be an artistic springboard, where a number of big artists have been discovered including: Mark Kelly, 77 Bombay Street, Pegasus, Orpheline,
and the winners of the 2013 edition, Crash Island (see interview, next page).

« Yusuf saw a snow-capped mountain for the first time! »
Interview: Crash Island, winner of the 2013 NTC
What are some of your memories of your show at Caprices Festival?
Guillermo Varillas (voice) : It was certainly the biggest stage on which we had played at
the time… We have fond memories of the welcoming staff and, in particular, the professionalism behind the well-prepared performances of the other artists. We were not used to such
warmth in Great Britain where competition is ferocious. It’s an experience that inspired us and
motivated us to continue making music.
What was your favorite moment at Caprices Festival?
GV :The concert, of course, but also the fantastic location where the festival takes place. Yusuf,
who grew up in England and in South Africa, saw a snow-capped mountain for the first time!
That said, from the moment we received the invitation to come to Caprices until the results of
the competition were in, we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. How has your career evolved since you won the Orange New Talent prize?
GV : We released our first studio EP, which we were able to produce with the support of Gordon
Raphael who decided to help us just before we played at Caprices Festival. Since then, plenty
of radio stations have played our tracks, both here in Great Britain and in other countries. We
are currently working on the next EP that will be released in early 2014. What are your projects for the upcoming year?
GV : We are still independent and without fixed plans and for the moment, and we do not
have plans to change this. We prefer to concentrate on the essentials: write songs and work
hard to make them get heard as much as possible. We just signed a distribution contract for
our previous EP, so the priority is now on our next recording and on the release of the new EP.
