Welcome from the President Greetings to everyone and welcome to the Northeast campus! I hope you are having a most enjoyable summer. Our faculty, staff, students, and community volunteers have worked hard to bring us this production of Crimes of the Heart, and, as always, I know that you are in for a treat with this play. Whenever you have the chance, please spend some time with us on the Northeast campus. Our grounds are particularly beautiful in the summertime. We especially welcome members of the Master Teacher Experience who are here with us this summer. This is a professional development group representing instructors from throughout the Alabama Community College System. They are an outstanding group, and we always enjoy having them on campus and in our area. As for events this summer, if you are a music fan, be sure to attend our Music on the Mountain Bluegrass Festival to be held at Northeast on August 10, 2013. This year’s festival features Mountain Heart. Among other campus events during the year, we will be hosting our Christmas pageant in early December, along with a back-by-popular-demand performance by the Alabama Ballet in February. This year, the Alabama Ballet will be performing Romeo and Juliet. During the upcoming year, our NACC Foundation also will be hosting a golf tournament, Holiday Gala, and Dancing with the Stars type event. Foundation events are very popular throughout the community, so please get your tickets early! Our Jazz Band, Choral Music Group, and Encore will be in concert throughout the year, so be sure and watch for the opportunity to see these talented musicians. And of course, our theatre department will be performing the highly-anticipated Les Miserables next spring (2014) and, as of this writing, another as-yet undetermined play this fall. So there is much to see and do at Northeast over the coming months. Please be with us whenever you can and enjoy the play! Dr. David Campbell President, Northeast Alabama Community College Northeast Alabama Community College Theatre presents By Beth Henley Originally produced by the Actors Theatre of Louisville, Inc., in February 1979. CRIMES OF THE HEART received its New York Premiere at the Manhattan Theatre Club in 1980. Produced on the Broadway Stage by Warner Theatre Productions, Inc./ Claire Nichtern, Mary Lea Johnson, Martin Richards, Francine Lefrak. Directed by Technical Director Mark A. Webb Brad Archer Ticketmasters F.G. Lumber, Inc. and Regions Bank Crimes of the heart is produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York. 440 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10016 Phone: 212.683.8960 Fax: 212.213.1539 www.dramatists.com The video and/or audio recording of this performance by any means whatsoever are strictly prohibited. The Cast **Denotes Scholarship Student At the core of this comedy/tragedy are the three Magrath sisters, Meg, Babe, and Lenny, who reunite at Old Granddaddy’s home in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The sisters were raised in a dysfunctional family – their mother committed suicide and their father was absent during their upbringing. Each sister has endured her share of hardship and misery. Past resentments bubble to the surface as they are forced to deal with assorted relatives and past relationships while coping with the latest incident that has disrupted their lives. Brody Atkins as Doc Porter 30, Meg’s old boyfriend. He is still known affectionately as “Doc” although his plans for a medical career changed after he was severely injured in Hurricane Camille. Doc, who now has his own wife and children, nevertheless remains close to the Magrath family. Although Meg abandoned him when she left for California, Doc remains fond of her. Jordon Johnson** as Lenny Magrath 30, the oldest of the three sisters. Her sisters have forgotten her birthday, only adding to her feeling of rejection. Lenny is frustrated after years of carrying heavy burdens of responsibility. Most recently, she has been caring for Old Granddaddy, sleeping on a cot in the kitchen to be near him. Lenny loves her sisters but is also jealous of them, especially Meg, whom she feels received preferential treatment during their upbringing. Jessica Lawson as Chick Boyle 35+, the sisters’ first cousin. She is a very demanding relative and extremely concerned about the community’s opinion of her. Chick is critical of all aspects of the Magrath’s family and is always bringing up past tragedies such as the mother’s suicide. Chick is especially hard on Meg, whom she finds undisciplined and calls a “low-class tramp,” and on Babe, who “doesn’t understand how serious the situation is” after shooting Zackery. Mark Nelson as Barnette Lloyd 26, Babe’s lawyer. An ambitious, talented attorney, Barnette views Babe’s case as a chance to exact personal revenge on Zackery. “The major thing he did,” Barnette says, “was to ruin my father’s life.” Barnette also seems to have a strong attraction to Babe, whom he remembers distinctly from a chance meeting. Kayleigh Smith as Babe Botrelle 24, the youngest sister. At first, the only explanation she gives for shooting her husband Zackery is “I didn’t like his looks! I just didn’t like his stinking looks!” Eventually, she reveals that the shooting was the result of her anger at Zackery’s cruel treatment both of her and of Willie Jay, a fifteen year-old African American boy with whom Babe had been carrying on an affair. Jessica Taheri as Meg Magrath 27, the middle sister. At eleven, Meg discovered the body of their mother following her suicide. This traumatic experience provoked Meg to test her strength by confronting morbidity wherever she could find it. At the beginning of the play Meg returns to Mississippi from California, where her singing career has stalled. Lenny and Babe feel that Meg has always received preferential treatment in life. From the Director What do Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek, Sam Shepard, and Tess Harper all have in common? Why, they all played major roles in the film version of Beth Henley’s Pulitzer Prize winning play, Crimes of the Heart, of course! This wonderful southern comedy, infused with an ample helping of drama and “touched” with a healthy dollop of crazy, makes for a very entertaining evening in the theatre. The Magrath sisters are perfect case studies for the all too common dysfunction we often find in some small southern town family dynamics. Set in Hazelhurst, Mississippi, five years after Hurricane Camille, Crimes of the Heart is a hilarious and heartwarming story about the struggles of three wild and crazy young Mississippi sisters whose passions sometimes get the better of their common sense. Because of their charm and vulnerability, however, it’s nearly impossible for an audience member not to end up with a lot of affection for the Magrath sisters. In reviewing the 1981-83 Broadway production, The New York Times critic said the play “mines a pure vein of Southern Gothic humor worthy of Eudora Welty and Flannery O’Connor” and claimed that “While this play overflows with infectious high spirits, it is also, unmistakably, the tale of a very troubled family. Such is Miss Henley’s prodigious talent that she can serve us pain as though it were a piece of cake.” The cast for this production of Crimes is a wonderfully talented ensemble consisting of several amazingly talented former students, current students, and community members. Kayleigh Jade Smith and Jessica Taheri, two of our former drama scholarship students and both gifted actresses, will be charming in the respective roles of Babe and Meg Magrath. Jordon Johnson, a current scholarship student will be delightful in her first leading role as Lenny. Mark Nelson, a recent graduate of our theatre program and a multi-talented musician and actor, will be portraying with great sensitivity the role of Barnette. Jessica Lawson, a community member and veteran of several plays with Northeast will be particularly less than charming in the role of the annoying cousin of the Magrath sisters, Chick. And finally, the role of Doc, the quiet seductive type, will be played with great charm by Brody Atkins, an incoming freshman in the theatre program who played several roles in our recent production of Blood Brothers. Everyone is in for a treat with this fantastic cast, and we are sure you will have a wonderful evening in the theatre watching them play these southern characters that so many of us will find familiar. We all know someone like most, if not all, of these characters from our own personal experience. I hope you will enjoy Crimes of the Heart as much as we have enjoyed creating this production for you! And many thanks to the many, many people who make it possible for Northeast to produce theatre of the highest quality! From Dr. Campbell, our president, without whose immeasurable support and faith in the theatre program, we would not exist, to all of the administration, faculty, staff, and community volunteers who give so much in so many ways, we love and thank you all from the bottom of our hearts!
