G
irl Fest is a prevention program which
seeks to change peer culture to stem the
tide of men’s violence against women. We are
different than a Direct Service because we
focus on prevention to change the systemic
problem of gender-based violence. In our
work we often collaborate with exceptional
Direct Services that focus on everything from
legal aid for abused spouses and children,
homeless youth, factual advice for rape
survivors, and long term counseling.
If you or someone you know has endured
sexual assaut by a stranger, family member,
domestic partner or spouse, there is no shame
in asking for help. The road to recovery and
personal safety can often be an uphill climb
but there are services and people in the
community who are out there to help. When

from February 16th
2012 through March

reception on February

Hawaii’s best emerging
artists and local DJs
with their great music.
This exhibition of visual
culture,
language,
and ideas are as
heartbreaking as they
are hopeful. Depicted
in each piece lies the
darkness, hope, and
fragility of someone’s
light snuffed out from
abuse, suppression, or
rape, and the strength
and courage it takes
to light themselves up
again.
Representing
the stages of the

Miller imparts her knowledge of
taking written poetry and making it
suitable and comfortable to perform
on stage. Sometimes a poem well

If you are ready to start polishing your

performing your poetry scares the living

ritten and directed by Jennifer
Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation
exposes how mainstream media
contribute to the under-representation
of women in positions of power and
influence in America. The film challenges
the media’s limited and often disparaging
portrayals of women and girls, which
make it difficult for women to achieve
leadership positions and for the average
woman to feel powerful herself.
Miss Representation includes stories
from teenage girls and provocative
interviews with politicians, journalists,
entertainers, activists and academics
like Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy
Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow,
Rosario Dawson, Jackson Katz, Jean

mainstream media contribute to
the under-representation of women
in positions of power and influence

media’s limited and often disparaging

Tahiti Rey
TAHITI REY
Born and raised in Kailua, Hawaii, Tahiti
is the youngest daughter of legendary
entertainer, Augie Rey. After years of him
trying to keep her out of the business,
he finally gave in and let her follow in his
footsteps. Ever since she has called him
her “Dad-ager”. “He points me in the
right direction, keeps the sharks away,
and does it all with a ton of love and
pride.”, Tahiti says. Now 5 years later,
Tahiti Rey is an accomplished singer/
songwriter with a Hawaii Music Award
& Na Hoku Nomination under her belt
for her debut album “Acoustic Beauty”.
Her recent pairing with accomplished
singer/songwriter/guitarist/pianist, Jason
Alan, has taken her live performances to
an entirely new level. “It is so refreshing
and humbling to be able to work
alongside someone who challenges me,
encourages me, and supports me. I am
very excited for the music we will make
together.” Tahiti says.
MONARX
Monarx is a Honolulu-based Hip Hop Trio
consisting of emcess Cix and Quiet, and
DJ/producer extraordinaire Bumble Bee.
Layered over smoldering, heavy heartbeat
drums, the male and female vocalists weave
their allusion dense lyrics in classic backforth, one-two fashion. Their performances
feature Bumble Bee playing live between
turntables and his MPC 2000, as Cix & Quiet
rapid fire toast on the mics. Unofficial songs
like “Workin’ Day & Night” and “Without
Love” have been played on KTUH since
summer, and are posted for eavesdrop
on their Soundcloud page. The long-time
friends assembled as “Monarx” in 2011, and
are recording an EP for release in 2012.
A fresh new face to the DJing
scene, DJ Lemon has only begun
her
musical
spinning
journey
last summer at The University of
Hawaii’s college radio station.
With a profound love for music of
all types, DJ Lemon typically plays
downtempo trip hop and enjoys
dreamy tunes with complicated
beats. You can catch her show,
Down The Rabbit Hole, every
Wednesday night/Thursday morning
from midnight to 3am on KTUH 90.3
FM Honolulu!
DJ ADHDJ
ADHDJ plays a mix of indie-rock,
electro, and badass 80s music. She
has been djing at KTUH for three years,
and is currently rock director at KTUH.
DJ TIMO
INITY COLLECTIVE
From the humble beginnings of a
brother and sister duo, Inity Collective
have grown to include many other
musicians and have played at wellknown venues including the Mai
Tai bar, Pipeline Cafe, UH Andrews
Amphitheater & Beer Garden, and
Tropics Cafe. The band has evolved
into a fusion of reggae/roots/r&b/
jazz/rock inspired by the collective
songwriting effort from all of its
members. Inity Collective spreads
the message of peace, love, &
Inity; striving to share their music to
anyone with a willingness to share
the same vibe.
Timo spins regularly at the Keep it
Uppp monthly and at Go Bang! at
thirtyninehotel. She hosts and DJs
numerous events and is one of the

how to swing dance during the late-90s
swing revival. Between then and now,
her musical tastes have grown. She
began collecting jazz vinyl records last
year. She uses vinyl and digital formats
on her radio show called the Garden
on KTUH 90.3 FM Honolulu. She is on

HST. Michelle LaBelle plays jump blues,

enjoys sharing musical fruit from the
tree of jazz, because life is sweet.

DANCE/MOVEMENT
BELLY DANCERS IN PARADISE
Electrifying,
energetic,
and
purely
amazing,
The
Belly Dancers in
Paradise work
hard to perfect
their technique
and
bring
crowd pleasing
entertainment
to audiences everywhere. The Belly
Dancers in Paradise is a sisterhood
of women, young and old coming
together to share their passion
for belly dance. From all different
walks of life, these women vary
in age, size, ethnic backgrounds,
careers, families, cultures, and
life experiences. Though each
individual is unique in their own way,
all share one common passion,
belly dance. The common bond
that these women share develops
into a sisterhood that enables each
woman to express her sensuality and
femininity through artistic expression.
