TCM and Cancer
We are a society of cells that cooperate for the benefit of the whole,
the self. Cancer breaks the rules of cooperation and takes over the
organism without regard for the community of cells as a whole. All
cancers share common traits, cancer cells differ from normal cells
in two defining characteristics: they continue to divide in spite of
natural constraints , which control healthy cells , and they leave their
origins and invade distant tissues and establish new colonies or new
tumours.
Cancer is an ancient disease. There is record of the disease named
“Tumor” as early as in the oracle bone inscriptions found in the Yin
Dynasty ruins some 3500 Years ago. In TCM classic “ Huang Nei
Jing”, there are also records of discussions on the symptoms &

pathogenesis of tumours, their causes & treatments. Chinese Herbal
Medicine has been applied to the prevention and treatment of tumours since ancient times and it’s wisdom is
now being demonstrated in laboratories & hospitals worldwide. My name is Laura Zhang, I’m a Naturopath
and have also studied Chinese medicine , if you’d like to talk about the options available for Cancer Treatments
come and have a chat, we are at 4b Jack street in Atherton.
I am by no means saying that Chinese Medicine will cure your cancer but I can offer advice on how Traditional
Chinese Medicine may be used to individually suit and adjust your body and the medicines available for all
different types & stages of Cancers, I am working with a team of Naturopaths and Chinese herbalists who
specialise in Cancer and have been researching & developing treatment formulas for 22 years.

The Arts
KURANDA ROOTS FESTIVAL is heading into
its 11th year with a smile on its dial
Over the past ten years artists as diverse as the UKs Mad Professor and Mungo’s HiFi, NZs Cornerstone Roots and Olmecha Supreme and Australian favourites
Archie Roach, Opiuo, Combat Wombat, OKA, Dubmarine, Kingfisha and so many more, have made the journey up to the rainforest to perform in what some
say is “the best little festival in Oz”. To continue the tradition of bringing awesome musicians to town
we have selected some tasty morsels for y’all to enjoy! New acts to add to the ever growing line-up
of super talented artists include, the lyrical maestro Boover Banton (UK/Melb), who cut his teeth in the
heyday of UK soundsystem culture in the 80’s where you could find him rocking the mic on his system
Lion Heart, as well as guest appearances for Gemi Magic (one of the UKs biggest soundsystems of
the time), and the globally-respected Naram (Melb/NZ) - obsessive reggae fan with a penchant for
vintage dancehall, analogue synthesizers and ridiculously heavy bass lines. We also have some deep
minimal bass from NSW beat technician Interval to be served up alongside the bass heavy, funk-laden
mid-tempo breaks & glitch hop of Melbourne’s Staunch,
Returning to Kuranda this year we are pleased to welcome the ultra smooth styles of Griff (Melb),
the one and only Zennith, Roots favourites Die Rude, Brisbane’s loud & savvy dirty-funk-hip-hoprockers Schoolfight, as well as drumming workshops with Spankinhide’s Elliot Orr, and a host of cultural
workshops with Gudju Gudju and more. They join our first line-up drop artists including all the way
from the UK – Tippa Irie - Tippa emerged from England’s Saxon Sound International - the starstudded travelling sound system that has been at the forefront of the U.K. reggae dancehall scene for
the past 25 years and helped launch the careers of artists such as Maxi Priest, Papa Levi and Smiley
Culture. Tippa Irie remains one of the most requested Reggae entertainers internationally and is
part of the new generation of British MC’s who developed the ‘Fast Talking’ style chat, which today
can be heard in modern day rappers like Busta Rhymes. He has produced fifteen albums to date
and has a string of number 1 hit songs to his credit including Hey Mama with the Black Eyed Peas
(which was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rap Song category).
Also heading to Kuranda this year are the Brisbane based dynamic nu-wave brass band Bullhorn
- seven hard-hitting horn players, one boss drummer and one monster MC. Their sound is born
from a high-octane mix of funk, soul, hip-hop, jazz, reggae and dance music. The combination of
their high energy shows, virtuosic musicianship and profound musical arrangements never fails to
inspire and get the audiences moving on the dancefloor. We have so much more to tell you soon
and we are super stoked to be bringing you the 11th Kuranda Roots Festival, in the amazingly
beautiful site of The Billabong Kuranda. For more information visit kurandaroots.com.

Local artist to feature in ABC documentary
Sarah Scragg from Yungaburra has just completed the half hour version of the documentary on local Tableland artist William T. Cooper.
She followed his work for over a year as he created 30 new pieces for an exhibition that previewed at the Tableland Regional Gallery
last year. Many of the works that you may have seen on the walls of the gallery evolve during the film, which is fascinating to watch. It is
wonderful to have a world-renowned local artist team up with a local filmmaker to create a story from our region to share with the rest
of the country - and the world.
The early stage development of the film and a trip to Adelaide to
an international documentary conference was funded through
TRC’s RADF and Screen Queensland. The Conference proved
highly successful with ABC acquiring the finished film which will
screen on ABC1 on June 10. A DVD will also be produced as
part of the project.
With its additional micro stories and detailed technique
explanation it will enable the audience to delve deeper into
processes that are touched on within the film. With so many
years of experience behind him, this is fascinating to anyone
intrigued by the stories behind one of the worlds great wildlife
painters. As an artist he wishes to share all he has learned over
the years with anyone who may be interested. The DVD will be
available from late July at the Tablelands Regional Gallery and
online through www.williamtcooper.com.au or by visiting www.
sarahscragg.com for further information.

What’s happening in Kuranda?
The weekend vibe is certainly a colourful occasion in Kuranda. The markets are bustling, the restaurants are pumping
– locals and visitors are ready for another beautiful day in a rainforest paradise. Besides the popularity of travelling to
Kuranda from Cairns by Scenic Train and Skyrail, it’s just easy for our neighbours of the greater Tableland region to
jump on a local bus, maximize your day in Kuranda and allow yourself the freedom for your day to unfold!
There’s so much to see and do in Kuranda that even with the most precise plan, anyone could easily be distracted
along the way by local buskers, Aboriginal Art galleries, creative local arts and crafts outlets, market shopping, local
scenic rainforest walks and abundant wildlife.
Some fun local attractions you’ll find walking around Kuranda include the
Butterfly release (usually at 11am daily) within the Butterfly Sanctuary, cuddling a Koala
at Koala Gardens, personalised River Boat Cruises up the Barron River and plenty of self
discovery walks in the forests around the village.
If you’re on a budget - free attractions
aren’t limited to rainforest walks and nature spotting
- Kids absolutely LOVE getting their photo taken
with the ‘blood tooth’ dinosaur out the front of the
Dinosaur Museum on Therwine Street.
Photo: www.kurandariverbo

There’s also. . . a very interesting display of the honey bee colonies building their honeycomb at the Honey House
(also on Therwine Street) or get close to a snake at the Venom Zoo where you’ll usually find a friendly animal handler
out the front of the zoo, keen to introduce you to one of the resident reptiles! Strolling down Jum Rum Creek walk
there’s even more local wildlife to discover! Local bats, housed at Kuranda Bat Reach, screech in delight as you walk past.
The centre relies on local contributions of fruit for the bats and just like the Dinosaur Museum they graciously accept
coin donations. Top off your Sunday at the ‘bottom pub’ where all the locals come out to play! The Kuranda Hotel
puts on a live band every Sunday afternoon so get your friends together and come on down for some great food, cold
drinks and a lively atmosphere.

Atherton Show History ...
Celebrating 110 years of show history, It’s hard to imagine what the Atherton Show used to be like
more than a century ago. Thanks to the Show Society, we can at least capture a glimpse by reading
these interesting facts kindly submitted to What’s On by Show Manager, Jenny Grech.
Atherton’s community formed the Barron Valley Agricultural Pastoral and Industrial Association in 1903. William Marnane was the first chairman,
Thomas Rose was the Secretary and the Treasurer was Richard Harold Kingsford-Smith, eldest brother of the famous aviator.
The Association hosted the first Atherton Show on 20th and 21st June 1904 on the site of the present showgrounds. The show has continued to be held
annually except for in 1925 and in three years during World War 2 when the showgrounds were under army control.
There have been a few other interesting people who have been involved in the Atherton Show, including Harold Collins, who was a local Shire
Councillor, and later became Show President from 1923-24 and Show Patron from 1953-1957. He was also voted in as Member for Cook in 1935 and
later held the seat of Tablelands until 1957.
Controversial political figure, Vince Gair, who was Queensland Premier in the 1950’s, is listed as being a
Financial Life Member in 1948 and officially opened the 1951 Show.
The showgrounds have been improved over the years. A grandstand and oval were constructed in 1918. In
1934/35, ring lighting, fencing and seating were added. As a result of Army occupation of the showgrounds
from 1942 to 1945, an igloo was erected on the site. After the war, the igloo was secured at a bargain price
by the Show Society. This igloo has since been improved and expanded, and is known as Merriland Hall.
It is now 110 years since the first Agricultural Show was held in Atherton, and the Show continues to hold
traditional competitions in livestock and agricultural produce, wood-chopping, and handicrafts.
Come along to the first Atherton Show Ball in years!
Can you remember the last Atherton Show Ball? There has not been an Atherton Show Ball for many, many
years.
“We are not really sure what year the last ball was held, but the information we have suggests it may have
been around 1988,” said Show Manager, Jenny Grech, “Some of our longest-standing volunteers can’t even
remember the last one.”
Atherton Miss Showgirl for 2014, Georgie Richards, will host the 2014 Show Ball on Friday June 20 in
Merriland Hall, starting at 7pm.
“It is going to be a great night,” said Miss Richards, “there will be a fashion show by The Dress and Beyond and
live music from ‘Only 19teen’. There is no better way to celebrate 110 years since the first Atherton Show
than a good party with great company and thrilling entertainment.”
“We want as many people as possible to come along and make this night one to remember.
Our big emphasis is on getting the community involved and taking the opportunity to show off a bit. We want
to ensure that the Atherton Show is around for another 110 years but we can’t do it alone, we need to keep
up with the times and make sure that we have plenty of appeal for everyone.”
Tickets are $25 a person and children pay by age up to 12 years old. Bookings are essential so check out the
website www.athertonshow.com.au for details.
