Finals Night August 8, 2015—7pm Chemeketa Auditorium Salem, Oregon Melory Mirashrafi Distinguished Young Woman of Oregon 2015 Throughout my time in the Distinguished Young Women program, I have learned that nothing is more important than giving thanks. Considering the Old Hollywood theme of tonight’s program, it’s appropriate that the elegant Audrey Hepburn captures it best: “The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.” Partaking in Distinguished Young Women and representing the state of Oregon at the national level, it could not be more true that it is the relationships you make with talented and inspirational individuals that makes the program so special. I believe that spending time with people who inspire you is the key to finding qualities that you would like to embody yourself, naturally creating a drive to Be Your Best Self as a result. In Distinguished Young Women, everyone connects through a passion for supporting the education and pursual of dreams of girls all over the United States. My year as the Oregon representative would not have been the same without the hard work of many people along the way, for it is the dedication of volunteers that is the true base of this program. I would like to sincerely thank and recognize the Distinguished Young Women of Oregon board, Sil Scott, Mary Stocks, Randi Condon, Bill and Pam Hubble, Bob and Pam Zielinski, CeCe Fix, Kitty Tibbals, and many more for touching my life and making the Oregon program the success that it is. With the words of encouragement and preparation most generously shared by those who have helped me in my journey, I have gained interview skills, confidence, and most impressively, arm muscles that have helped me in both the state and national level. My parents, Behnaz and Mori Mirashrafi, have also been exceedingly supportive in my endeavors in the program, making me grateful to them for all that they have done to make me who I am through supporting my dreams of going into the medical field, and tolerating my love of the arts. Finally, I would like to share my love and gratitude for my friends from the class of 2015, Sianna, Haley, Marissa, Kelsey, Nizhoni, Sydney, Savannah, and the 2014 Distinguished Young Woman of Oregon, Kati Busch, who inspired me to always be my “best self ” while attempting to do justice in representing their magnificence on the national stage. Please enjoy the program! Family and friends of the class of 2016, thank you for letting us spend this week with these wonderful ladies, and I hope that you have as much fun watching them shine as we have. Love, Melory Mirashrafi Cover Photo by Danyel Rogers Photography State Chairman’s Message I’d like to personally welcome each of you to the 59th annual Distinguished Young Women Program of Oregon for 2016. Tonight, I am privileged to have the opportunity of presenting 11 exceptional young women that represent our beautiful state. Each of the participants is unique in who they are. Watch as they share with you a variety of goals, talents and aspirations. The girls before you a brilliant young women. Oregon would be honored to have any one of them represent our state at the national program next June. Each of the girls will carry with her an experience of a lifetime. Longtime friendships have been formed. One of these girls will be named the Distinguished Young Woman of Oregon for 2016. She will carry with her something from each of the girls she has had this experience with. These girls will be stronger individuals for what they have shared and learned from one another. They will leave this program as a new family of friends and carry the spirit of Distinguished Young Women throughout their lives. Melory Mirashrafi, Distinguished Young Woman of Oregon 2015, has represented Oregon well. I was proud to travel with her to Mobile, Alabama where she competed at the national program. Melory is on to Chapman University in California to make her dream of being a surgeon a reality. I will always cherish the time I had with her. I too have been a parent sitting in the audience with the tension flowing through every vein in my body. Each of your daughters will do her best and knows that this is more than a win. She knows this is one of the most rewarding experiences she will ever have. Celebrate what she has accomplished and know that you have raised her well. These girls are ready to meet the challenges that face them in the world. This experience will help them grow with understanding as to what they are capable of pursuing. Each girl is on her way to make her dreams reality. Tonight enjoy these girls and know that each of them will offer her finest and carry herself with pride. She will know that she gave you and the judges her best self. GREATER DOUGLAS COUNTY KEIZER WASCO COUNTY Colleen Denny Julianne Haskin April Weaver At Large Programs In addition to gaining participants through the local programs Distinguished Young Women has also developed an At Large program to include counties that do not have an established program. This allows the State Program to offer more scholastic opportunities to young women throughout the state. Host Families Host families have opened their homes and hearts to our participants. For one week, they become their families away-from-home. The State program and its committee are forever grateful to these wonderful people who have done so much for our program. Jim and Nancy Varner Chris and Sha Eppley Kim and Susie Girouard Linda Baker Bob and Pam Zielinski Judging Criteria The Distinguished Young Women selection process uses a system by which each judge assigns every participant a score ranging from 1 to 10 (whole numbers only) in each judging category except Scholastics. The score is solely an evaluation of an individual’s performance and not a comparison of one participant to another. The tabulator totals the judges’ scores for each participant in each category, and then weights the sum according to that category's percentage. The tabulator then adds the weighted scores for each participant in each judging category to the deliberation points. The total points determine the awards and the Distinguished Young Woman. For a finalist format, the total points will determine the finalists. The judging categories and percentages are: Scholastics 25% Interview 25% Talent 20% Fitness 15% Self-Expression 15% Note: A separate judge, with an educational background, judges the Scholastics category. The Scholastics score is on a 1-125 basis.
