Dave is a Certified Flight Instructor and Airframe & Powerplant Technician. He recently explained how his experiences at SIU helped him get this unique opportunity. Dave began volunteering his maintenance services for the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) as they flew the historic aircraft around the air show circuit. Dave credits his AvTech instructors, Dr. Charley Rodriguez and Lowell Berentsen, for providing him with the technical background to operate and maintain an aircraft like FiFi. Dave also says his aerobatic experiences at SIU also reinforced his aviation background, and he is thankful to Ken Robinson for his generosity with his aircraft. Dave also says the Aviation Management program helped him develop an understanding of the people and systems within the aviation world. Dave Oliver, Pilot, B-29 “FiFi” and SIU Aviation alumnus FiFi’s Return to Carbondale The B-29 Superfortress “FiFi” will return to Southern Illinois this summer. FiFi and her crew will be at Southern Illinois Airport on July 19, and the Williamson County Regional Airport in Marion on July 2021. Each event takes place from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. FiFi will be joined by the CAF’s B-24 Liberator, “Diamond Lil,” on the visit to the region. The planes will then depart Southern Illinois for Oshkosh, Wis., for the 2013 EAA Air Venture. Come see this historic aircraft in Southern Illinois or Oshkosh.
