Editor’s Message
Change that we need
There is a world of difference
between “change, yes we can”
and “change that we need”.
The former is more of an empty
promise, the type of political
campaign slogan often used to arouse raw emotion. No
doubt, such slogans could achieve their objectives especially
in a situation where the constituency is fickle and volatile.
It is often short on fulfilling that promise emotionally made
on an emotionally charged campaign trail. Examples abound
concerning the failure to honour this catchy campaign
slogan. Space does not permit us to go into the details on
this topic in this brief editorial.
The latter is one that calls for a serious look at our present
predicament and entreat us to seek immediate solutions
to the existing problem failing which the issue being
unattended could lead to greater complications or an
undesirable outcome. Should such catch phrase be used as
a slogan, it would be a more realistic promise, more down
to earth, as it were. Therefore, realistic solutions could often
be found to remedy the problem at hand.
Let me explain the latter concept with a brief illustration to
capture the essence of “change that we need” for clarity of
purpose. It would surely help alert and awake disinterested
parties who may wish to follow our philosophical discourse
but could not due to insufficient understanding of what is
being discussed. A situation has cropped up to force KGS to seek immediate
solution to the problem that has been bothering the club
for some time. Here is the thing. To cut cost the club has
decided to stop printing the hard copy of The Golfer, our ever
popular club magazine, hitherto being printed in hard copy
every quarter (four times a year). This practice has been
going on since The Golfer’s first publication. The hard copy
is distributed to all club members regardless of whether
they want it or not. KGS has been doing this generously
with a sense of duty all this while. But from this quarter on,
KGS needs to change that generous handout gesture, for a
good reason.
Foremost in the mind of the management is the annual
expenses incurred in the printing and posting of the magazine
to club members. Every year a sum of RM70,000 is spent
for the printing of the magazine (The Golfer). That includes
postage. The club’s RM70,000 hard earned income could
be saved by going towards the production of an e-magazine
online instead. Such a move would definitely cut cost and
lead KGS towards an e-communication environment.
This means that members could get access to The Golfer
online. It is deemed that an online e-magazine would
invariably be environment friendly since it is clean and
paperless. Besides, it would be extremely cost effective and
would encourage prudent spending of limited club fund.
There are club members out there who would regard The
Golfer as an indispensable document. It is their bible, so to
speak, from which they could easily obtain comprehensive
club information on club matters and club affairs – to
them it is a club permanent record for easy reference. No
doubt, such club members would still want a hard copy for
themselves regardless of cost consideration. Fair enough. For them and for them alone, here is a solution. A hard copy
of The Golfer will be made available to them on prior order
at rock bottom price of RM5.00. To members who could
spare extra cash an annual budget of RM20 set aside for The
Golfer is less than chicken feed! Not a dent in their deep
pocket. That is indeed a mark of loyalty to the magazine that
has been their sacred text book and a ready reckoner.
Here is a suggestion to those who will surf the e-magazine
(The Golfer) online. Just log on to KGS website: www.
kgswak.com and our e-magazine (The Golfer) will appear
in full view and in full colour. Everything is there for your
viewing pleasure. Happy viewing I must say.

Captain’s Message
Captain’s Message
Let me start by wishing
all our Dayak members
“Selamat Hari Gawai”;
Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai
(Long Life, Good Health
and Prosperity!) Indeed, these are the best “blessing”
we can wish for our friends and fellow members at KGS,
especially in the light of so many natural calamities that
have befallen our neighbours, near and far; earthquakes
and tsunami in Japan, tornados in the US, floods in the
Philippines etc..etc…
As has been the tradition at KGS, to share the joy of this
special festival, the Dayak members of our club will be
sponsoring a Gawai Dayak Open House Golf on 26th June
2011. We look forward to the day of celebration for golfers
and non-golfers alike.
The ever popular KGS Team Matchplay which kicked off on
12th March 2011, with 16 participating teams, produced
many upsets and “cliff-hangers” moments, generating
great interests amongst members, including those who are
not members of any teams. Team Grasscutter, champion
for the past 2 years was knocked out fairly early in the
series.
The eventual champion Mafia Hukum avenged their earlier
defeat to Team Brothers I with a 3-2 win during the final
match on 24th April 2011 and walked away with the Datuk
Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. Wong Soon Kai KGS Team Matchplay
Challenge Trophy. Syabas Team Mafia Hukum!! Brothers
I was the only team that won all their matches till the
final and I am honoured to be a member of the team and
contributed 2 points during two of the matches.
If you care to look at the back inside cover of this magazine
listing all our Reciprocal Clubs throughout the region
as well as far away clubs in Australia, New Zealand and
China, we have altogether 64 clubs with whom we have
reciprocal relationship. That is a lot of reciprocal clubs! These reciprocal arrangements were developed and
formalised over the years, and to maintain and sustain such
relationship, we need regular contacts with members as
well as management committee members through friendly
visits and games, both home and away.
During the past few years, we have put in special efforts to
organise such Inter-Club Games with our reciprocal clubs in
Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia. This year it’s our turn
to visit Kelab Golf Negara Subang in Kuala Lumpur and we’ll
be having a 2-day inter-club games with them on 18th and
19th June 2011. About 30 of our golfers will be making
the trip, which will be extended to cover 2 of our reciprocal
clubs in Perak i.e., Kelab Golf DiRaja Perak and Meru Valley
Golf and Country Club.
In September 2011, we’ll be making another trip to Johor
Bahru to reciprocate Kelab Golf DiRaja Johor who visited us
last year. We plan to include visits to a few of our reciprocal
clubs in Singapore during the trip.
A number of golfers from our reciprocal club in Melbourne
Australia, the Long Island Country Club will be visiting us
in early July, 2011. It will be a great opportunity for us
to reciprocate their hospitality when more than 20 of our
golfers visited them 2 years ago.
I would like to conclude by quoting the famous Lee Trevino,
who said “There is no such thing as natural touch. Natural
touch is developed when you hit millions of balls!”
Happy Golfing!

Kgs Easter Celebration
The KGS Easter Celebration was once again
organised on Sunday, 24th April 2011. This
time, about 20 children aged 15 years and
below, whose parents were members,
took part in the event.
The event kicked off at 2.00 p.m. with
the egg hunt where the children were
running all over the clubhouse lobby to search for the hidden paper
eggs and the real ones.
Nonetheless, the fun continued with the egg colouring. All the participants had to
colour 2 eggs with different themes consisting of Mother’s Day and 1Malaysia.
The last event was the egg race where all the children teamed up and competed
against other teams to win the race. The event became merrier with the
parents’ attendance in giving support to the
children. The Entertainment Sub Committee
Members, Mrs. Laura Michael and Mrs. Sandra
Linger gave away all the prizes to the winners.
Congratulations to all the winners and a big
“Thank You” to the parents who came and
supported the event.

Mother’s Day Celebration
In collaboration with the Mother’s Day celebration, the Library Committee organised the ‘KGS Mother’s Day
Celebration’ on Sunday, 15th May 2011.
About 20 children took part in the event. The event kicked off at 2.00 p.m. with the colouring and drawing
competition, where all participants aged 12 and below were each given a picture for colouring, and for children
aged 13 to 15 years, they had to draw based on Mother’s Day theme. The winner was based on the most
creative colouring and drawing that were produced respectively from each category.
After the colouring competition, the event continued with the Mother’s Day Card Design. Each participant was
given a blank card to design a Mother’s Day greeting card. The winner was judged based on the most creative
card design.
The fun did not stop there. The latter part of the day was arranged for all participants made up of a team of 4 and
competed in the ‘Relay Eating Competition’. The parents, especially the mothers, also participated to compete
among each other to win the ‘Feed the Mother’ competition.
Before the prize presentation, there was a surprise for all mothers who were present whereby, all of them were
invited to the stage to receive greetings from their children who presented them with Mother’s Day song and
well decorated cupcakes specially prepared for them…..Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers.
The Library Committee members were present on the day to hand over the prizes to the winners.

Mr. Australia 2010
Kho Kheng Yong
“I am truly happy and satisfied with my achievement
so far. All my hard work and sacrifices paid off.”
Former Mr. Australia 2006 Kho Kheng Yong had once again
made Malaysia proud by regaining his title and emerged as Mr.
Australia 2010 Bodybuilding winner in the 85 kg category. His
outstanding achievement had proven Malaysian athletes can
excel at international level in the bodybuilding arena.
He earned himself the prestigious title and became the best in
his own class when he beat his fellow Australian competitors in
the recent 2010 National Bodybuilding Championship, held in
Sydney, Australia, in October 2010.
He had also won the state championship title in Melbourne,
Australia two weeks before he was crowned the Australian
national champion.
“I am truly happy and satisfied with my achievement so far. All my
hard work and sacrifices paid off,” Kho said during an interview,
at the Sarawak Golf Club (KGS) here, yesterday.
Meanwhile, his former coach Clarence Soh said that he is
overwhelmed with Kho’s success throughout the years, especially
in the recent championship.
Kho’s huge success in bodybuilding has definitely given a huge
impact on the youths of today. Quite a number of the youths are
motivated by Kho’s outstanding achievements.
“On the other hand, I strongly feel that Kho’s tremendous
success, contributions
and
achievements
throughout the years in
bodybuilding deserves
full recognition from the
relevant authorities. It
would be nice to see our
locally born Sarawakian
to be recognised,” he
said.
According to Kho, there
will be no competition for him this year (2011). Kho is planning
to take a year’s break until next year. However, he will still do
his routine training in the gym. At the same time he would
be watching his diet to maintain his stamina, endurance and
bodybuilding form.
Kho’s career first started in 1998, when he was just turning 18.
He trained under the guidance of Clarence at Kelab Golf Sarawak
(KGS). Originated from Kuching, Kho’s bodybuilding career
kicked-off in 1999 when he won the Mr. Sarawak Junior title
followed by second placing in Mr. Malaysia Junior competition.
His big leap in the bodybuilding arena took place when he
left for Australia in 2000. Five years later, Kho’s first biggest
international achievement as a professional athlete came in the
year 2005 when he was placed third in the National Bodybuilding
competition (80 kgs category), in Australia.
Nevertheless, his high determination and effort finally paid-off in
the following year when he earned Mr. Australia championship in
the light heavy weight category, during the National Bodybuilding
Championship 2006, held in Melbourne, Australia.
Kho, 30, is currently working as an IT Specialist with a private
firm in Australia. Apart from that, his strong love and passion for
bodybuilding has never let him down. Despite his busy schedule
at work, he always makes sure that he would not neglect his
routine training.
As far as he is concerned, Kho said that he will continue his
bodybuilding career as long as it takes. Corporate sponsors as
well as state government’s recognition will definitely be much
help for the professional athlete.

Title: A Doctor in the House
The Memoirs of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad
The West has called him recalcitrant, racist, anti-Semitic
and arrogant. The developing world, however, sees former
Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as
a visionary champion, the rare leader who gave every Third
World individual reason to stand tall. Even his harshest critics
cannot deny that, above all else, he gave some of the most
neglected countries courage, showing the way to a more hopeful
future.
But it was not without controversy. His 22 years at the country’s helm has been
characterised as both dictatorial and inspiring. Few leaders have been able to turn an
entire country from a predominantly agrarian economy into an industrial powerhouse –
fewer still have been able to do so within a short two decades.
Here, with surgical precision, Dr Mahathir explores a nuanced history and scrutinizes
his own role in the shaping of modern Malaysia.

child killer Jason Jessup is granted a
retrial based on new DNA evidence.
Convinced Jessup is guilty, Haller
takes the case on the condition that
he gets to choose his investigator,
LAPD Detective Harry Bosch.
But there’s a serious political taint on the case, and Haller
must face down a celebrity defense attorney who has already
started trying it in the media. While Bosch searches the cold
trail for the eyewitness who was the key to Jessup’s original
conviction, the convict is released on bail. Now Haller and
Bosch fear the worst: this killer may have just gotten started
– and the trial is a matter of life or death for everyone.

Title: 566 Hari Mencari Cinta
Author: Ilya Abdullah
Kerana satu perjanjian, aku mencari cinta. Dan kerana perjanjian itu, aku
menemui cinta.
Firdayu: “Aku mencari cinta semata-mata kerana kemewahan yang bakal aku
kecapi dan aku tidak akan biarkan diriku tunduk pada cinta!”
Kid: “Semua orang menggelarkannya ‘poison ivy’. Cantik tetapi beracun. Tapi
Semakin aku mengenali
dia, semakin aku ingin memiliki dia”.
566 hari… tempoh untuk Firdayu mencari cinta kerana satu perjanjian. Cinta senang dicari namun
mudahkah untuk mencari cinta sejati? Apakah lagi Firdayu memilih lelaki seperti memilih baju. Yang
berjenama lebih diutamakan. Tanpa jenama, dicampak ke tepi!.
Title: Altar Of Eden
Author: James Rollins
Baghdad falls…and armed men are
seen looting the city zoo. Amid a hail
of bullets, a concealed underground
lab is ransacked and something
horrific is set loose upon the world.
Seven years later, Louisiana state
veterinarian Lorna Polk investigates
an abandoned shipwrecked fishing
trawler carrying exotic caged animals,
part of a black market smuggling ring.
But there is something disturbingly
wrong with these beasts-each an unsettling
mutation of the natural order, all sharing
one uncanny trait: incredibly heightened
intelligence.
Joining forces with U.S. Border Patrol Agent
Jack Menard – a man who shares with her
a dark and bloody past – Lorna sets out to
uncover the truth about this strange cargo
and the terrorist threat it poses. Because a
beast escaped the shipwreck and is running
amok- and what is about to be born upon
the altar of Eden could threaten not only the
future of the world but the very foundation
of what it means to be human.

A
golf pro, who happened to be an atheist, took a golfing
vacation at a majestic mountain golf resort which
was surrounded by primeval forest, pristine flora and
fauna.
“What a magnificent and wooded golf course so close to
nature.”
“What powerful streams and waterfalls to soothe the
wounded heart.”
“What beautiful animals, a cosmic accident they call the
gift of Mother Nature.”
He muttered this to himself.
Standing on tee-box number 4 alongside the running
stream, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him.
He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot male Bengal tiger
charging towards him.
Leaving everything he had behind, he ran as fast as he
could up the path. He looked over his shoulder and saw
that the tiger was closing in on him.
He looked over his shoulder again, and the tiger was even
closer.
He tripped and fell on the ground.
Being a good sportsman, he easily rolled over to pick
himself up but saw that the man-eating beast was right on
top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his
right paw to strike him.
T
hree religious rabbis in black with long beards were
playing golf. A guy named Mulhaney wanted to play
golf and this was the only threesome in which he
could play. So he joined the rabbis and played 18 holes. At
the end of the game his score was 104. The other rabbis
shot 69, 70 and 71.
He said to them, “How come you all play such good
golf?”
The lead rabbi said, “When you live a religious life, join and
attend temple, you are rewarded.”
Mulhaney love golf and figure: “what do I have to lose?” At that very moment, the atheist cried out: “Oh my God!”
Time stopped.
The Bengal tiger froze.
The forest was silent.
As a bright light shone upon the atheist, a voice came out
of the sky.
“You deny my existence for all these years, teach others
I don't exist, and even credit creation to cosmic accident.
Do you expect me to help you out of this life and death
predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?”
The golfing atheist looked directly into the light, and said: “It
would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me
as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the TIGER
a Christian so that he could put the Ten Commandments
into immediate practice?”
“Very well,” said the voice.
The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And
the Bengal tiger dropped his right paw, brought both paws
together, bowed his head and prayed: “Lord, bless this
food, which I am about to receive from Thy bounty through
Christ our Lord, Amen.”
So he found a temple close to his home, attended twice a
week, converted, joined and lived a holy life. About a year
later he played golf with the three rabbis. He shot 104 and
they shot a 69, 70 and 71.
He said to them, “Okay, I joined the temple, lived a religious
life and I’m still shooting lousy.”
The lead rabbi said to him, “What temple did you join?”
He said, “Beth Shalom.”
The rabbi retorted, “Schmuck! That one’s for tennis!”

om Pike, an engineer by
profession, is an avid golfer. He was in the middle of a golf
course on a remote Australian cliff
playing alone. It’s a resort for the
very rich. Hence, the course had a
few golfers on any given day. T
B
Over his head, some distance away,
he saw a hot air balloon. Guess
who was in it? Julia Gillard, the first
female Australian Prime Minister. Julia suddenly realised she was lost. She reduced altitude and spotted
Tom Pike, the golfing engineer
below. She descended a bit more
and shouted: ”Excuse me, can you
help me? I promised Bob Brown I
would meet him an hour ago but I
don't know where I am.” One evening, at his club’s pub, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had
ever seen sitting alone at a table in the pub. He gulped a glass of whiskey to
give him enough courage to approach her.
Tom Pike replied from below,
“You're in a hot air balloon hovering
approximately 30 feet above the
ground. You're between 40 and 41
degrees north latitude and between
59 and 60 degrees west longitude.” ’Leary often played golf with his good buddy, John McFeigh. While playing,
O’Leary often confided in McFeigh some very personal matters. One day,
on the golf course, he said, “John, I am sad that my only daughter who
is away overseas has not been home for four or five years. I hoped nothing
happened to her.”
"You must be an engineer" said Julia.
"I am," replied Tom Pike, "How did
you know?"
“Well,” answered Julia, “everything
you have told me is probably
technically correct, but I've no idea
what to make of your information
and the fact is, I'm still lost. Frankly,
you've not been much help at all. If
anything, you've delayed my trip by
your talk.”
Tom Pike responded, “You must be
our PM.”
“I am,” replied Julia, “but how did
you know?”
“Well, you don't know where you
are or where you're going. You have
risen to where you are, due to a
large quantity of hot air. You made
a promise, which you've no idea
how to keep, and you expect people
beneath you to solve your problems.
The fact is you are in exactly the
same position you were in before
we met, but now, somehow, it's
my bloody fault,” shouted Tom Pike
angrily.
ob has been a golf pro all his life in spite of being born into a very wealthy
family. At a very marriageable age, he still lives at home with his father
who runs a lucrative business.
When Bob found out that he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly
father died, he decided that he needed to find a wife with whom to share his
fortune.
He said to her, "I may look like just an ordinary guy, but in just a few years, my
father will die and I will inherit $200 million."
Impressed, the woman asked for his family’s business card and three days
later, she became Bob’s stepmother.
O
One Sunday morning, as O’Leary was all set for a round of golf with John
McFeigh, his daughter showed up at the door.
“Where have ye been all this time, child? Why did ye not write to us, not even
a line? Now, there’s Facebook, Twitter, no reason to not to communicate with
us. Why didn't ye call child? Can ye not understand what ye put yer old Mother
thru?”
The girl, crying, replied, “Sniff, sniff... Dad.... I became a prostitute.”
“Ye what!!? Get outta here, ye shameless harlot! Sinner! You're a disgrace to
this Catholic family.”
“OK, Dad... As ye wish.”
“I just came back to give Mum this luxurious fur coat, title deed to a ten bedroom
mansion plus a $5 million savings certificate. For my little brother, his gold Rolex. And for ye, Daddy, the sparkling new Mercedes Limited Edition convertible that's
parked outside, plus a membership to the most prestigious country club in the
whole island... (takes a breath)... And an invitation for ye all to spend New Year's
Eve on board my new yacht in the Riviera.”
“Now what was it ye said ye had become?” says
O’Leary.
The girl, crying again, ”Sniff, sniff... A prostitute,
Daddy! Sniff, sniff.” “Oh! Be Jesus! Ye scared me half to death, girl! I thought ye said a Protestant.”
“Come here and give yer old Dad a hug!!!”
