STAY UP TO DATE 8 DAYS OF COURAGE LIVE FOLLOW LIVE ON OUR WEBSITE 4 LIVE RIDER TRACKING DAILY HIGHLIGHTS ON SUPERSPORT FANS TAKE NOTE IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION For the safety of yourself and the riders please park in the designated areas and do not block the path of the riders. Please adhere to the marshalls’ instructions at all times. To avoid congestion please follow the directions contained in this guide. No route access Until the Hyenas – the official route sweepers – have come past your location you may not access the route. This is for the safety of riders and spectators alike. Until the Hyenas have passed there are still riders on the route and spectators cannot access the route. Plan accordingly Travelling times provided in this guide are estimates and do not allow for delays caused by congestion and roadworks. Keep it tidy Please do not litter or smoke. The race passes through some pristine environments, as well as gorgeous farmlands, and we would hate to not be invited back. Please respect private property. Much of the race takes place on conservation sites and specific access rules apply, please familiarise yourself with them in advance. Follow the signs Spectators are not allowed to assist riders – even holding a bike while a rider pumps the tyre can earn them a penalty or disqualification. The only assistance a spectator can give a rider is a good cheer. All spectator points will be thoroughly sign-posted. If in doubt, follow the signage. No GPS coordinates to spectator points have been provided to ensure that vehicles following the race stick to the selected routes to avoid clashing with the race. Safety for all Controlled crossings No outside assistance allowed Please obey the marshalls and traffic instructions and be polite, they are there to ensure the safety of not only the riders but of you, the spectators, too. At times the race will intersect with access routes. Please adhere to the traffic marshall’s instructions at these points. These are not suitable spectator points so please proceed to the next designated spectator area before stopping to view the race. Never park along the race route. THE NITTY GRITTY RULES AND REGULATIONS The Absa Cape Epic is a UCI sanctioned event, in which riders earn points towards world rankings. As such, there are strict rules that the organisers and riders must abide by. Over and above this, there are additional regulations that make the Untamed African race an unfogettable experience that attracts riders from around the world. Towing is the practice of attaching two riders’ bikes together with an elastic cord so that the stronger rider can pull the weaker rider. This is far too dangerous to do on the Absa Cape Epic but a good teammate sits up front so that their partner can slipstream. @capeepic If a team has a bad day and misses the maximum stage time they can still continue to ride but with a blue number board and they will not be considered official Absa Cape Epic finishers. The two-minute rule No towing Up to the minute race updates Blue board riders /capeepic Get an inside view into the race and Like our page This is the x-factor that makes the Absa Cape Epic different to any other race: it’s a team race. Team members have to stick together at all times. If riders are caught more than two minutes away from their partner at any stage of the race they will receive a time penalty and may face disqualification. /absacapeepic Catch the higlights and special compilations on our YouTube Channel /capeepic Experience the Absa Cape Epic on Instagram LEADERS JERSEYS SPECIAL JERSEYS MEN ABSA AFRICAN SPECIAL JERSEY SASOL WOMEN EXXARO SPECIAL JERSEY The yellow zebra jersey is worn by the leading team in the Men’s category. Stage times are added up and the team with the lowest cumulative time at the end of each stage gets to wear the iconic jersey the next day. The team in yellow after the full eight days of racing is the overall winner. In 2014 the Women’s category prize purse was boosted to equal that of the men, thanks to Sasol’s sponsorship. Since 2012 the top women riders also gained UCI points, which served to sharpen the competition in this category, with 2016 promising to be the most closely contested yet. The striking red Absa African jersey is awarded to the highest-placed team where both members hold passports from an African country, regardless of their category. The competition for this special jersey becomes more intense every year. The overall winners of the Absa African jersey are awarded the Burry Stander Memorial Trophy. The Exxaro special jersey is awarded to the top historically disadvantaged South African team where both riders are under the ages of 26. The Exxaro MTB Academy was created to increase access to the sport for previously disadvantaged South Africans. In recent years the number if competitors for this jersey has mushroomed. OTHER JERSEYS DIMENSION DATA MASTERS The race for the blue Masters’ category jersey has become nearly as fierce as that for the overall victory. Both team members in this category must be between the ages of 39 and 49 years. Every year there are riders in the field who are entitled to wear the distinctive rainbow jerseys - white with green, yellow, black, red and blue stripes across the chest. These are reigning world champions in any of the cycling disciplines. A world champion must wear the jersey when competing in the same discipline, category and speciality for which the title was won. GRAND MASTERS SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMPION MIXED OUTCAST JERSEY The distinctive purple jersey was introduced in 2013 and has proved to be highly competitive, with several teams vying for the top spot. To compete in this category both team members must be over 49 years of age. The male/female combination adds a different dynamic to racing the Absa Cape Epic, and the race for the dark green jerseys has proved to be fiercely contested. As in the other categories, communication and understanding your partner’s strengths and weaknesses is critical to success in the mixed race. 6 WORLD CHAMPION The South African champions’ jerseys have green and gold stripes across the chest. Reigning South African champions in each of the respective cycling disciplines wear them when competing. This jersey only applies to UCI registered riders if their partner drops out. It helps other riders identify them as Outcast riders. They may not assist other riders or interfere with the outcome of the race. Grand Finale 20 March 2016 Meerendal Wine Estate, Durbanville The Grand Finale at Meerendal always offers family and fans the opportunity to live the glory of eight days of racing through witnessing the triumph and celebrations of the pro riders, amateurs, celebrities and Olympic medallists who cross the finish line for the last time. Due to popular demand the Liqui-Fruit trail runs and kids MTB races will be back, boasting fantastic new routes through the local vineyards; come and participate in some of the action of the day and stay to cheer riders home as Epic Heroes. It is set in a beautiful valley and is famous for its heritage and magnificent country living. Church Street provides the largest concentration of National Monuments in one street in South Africa, and there are a variety of museums, gourmet restaurants and outstanding accommodation facilities in the town. Tulbagh is renowned for its well established wine route and is the home of some of the finest wine estates in the country, but that is not all. Visitors can also treat themselves to handcrafted Belgian chocolates, cheese and olives. The more culturally inclined should not miss the opportunity to see the works of the many local artists, or take in a show at the 120-seater theatre in the main street. Adventurous types may want to hike the local trails, mountain bike, horse ride, fish or indulge in some bird-watching. Saronsberg itself is a major attraction and has played a central role in the rich history of the Tulbagh valley. WELLINGTON Wellington is renowned for its beautiful Cape Dutch homesteads, picturesque environment, gardens and numerous wineries. The historic Bain’s Kloof Pass, built by master-road builder Andrew Geddes Bain, has unsurpassed vistas, indigenous flora and fauna and crystal-clear streams and rivers. It is the perfect spot for hikers and fly-fishermen. Closer to town there are guided winewalks and horse-trails on offer for those wishing to take in the local sights and fynbos. Wellington is synonymous with the dried fruit industry and the town is surrounded by orchards, wine estates, buchu plantations and olive groves. Wellington’s vine-cutting nurseries are responsible for the production of approximately 80% of the country’s vine root stock for the wine industry. Mountain biking is well-established in the region and in 2016 the race will take advantage of some of the renowned trails as well as a few hidden gems. The race village is situated on the manicured sports fields of the CPUT campus in the town. www.wellington.co.za +27 21 873 4604 2016 ABSA CAPE EPIC SPECTATOR GUIDE 15 STAGE 5 - 93km CLIMBING 2 500m m N Kro STAGE 3 CPUT WELLINGTON - BOSCHENDAL STAGE 4 R301 FRIDAY 18 March 2016 Champagne Cascade Manor from CPUT LD Turn LEFT out of CPUT on to Hexberg Pad/ Road 0km Turn LEFT at stop street (opposite direction to 0.2km Nuwekloof Pass) Take the SECOND EXIT (RIGHT) at the roundabout into 0.5km Upper Pentz Street STRAIGHT at stop street (over Jan Van Riebeeck Street) 0.4km Turn LEFT at traffic Light on to Hoofweg (Main Street) 0.2km Continue STRAIGHT at Traffic Lights (over Church Street) Continue STRAIGHT at Traffic Lights (over Champagne 1.1km Street ) - Main becomes Piet Retief Turn LEFT at Traffic Lights into Bodal Road 1.8km Turn Right at stop street towards Paarl 3.5km Turn LEFT into Swawelstert Road 1km Turn LEFT into Waterval Pad/Road (Dirt Road) 1.3km Turn LEFT into Casade Manor Guest House 2.2km Arrive at WP2 / SPA - Casade Manor Guest House 0.1km Wellington Piet Retief rg Bo-Dal R45 R44 R301 TD 0.2km Paarl 0.7km PAARL MOUNTAIN NATURE RESERVE 1.1km 1.3km 1.6km B Sonstraal R101 N1 2.7km 3.8km 7.3km 8.3km 9.6km 11.8km 11.9km Suid-Agter Paarl Exit 59 Drakenstein Old Paarl N1 CAPE TOWN R101 0 1 Exit 62 C Start Spec A Spec B Spec C Finish km FRANSCHHOEK LIMIETBERG NATURE RESERVE Lead 7:00 8:42 9:19 9:45 10:52 STAGE 3 PAARL CPUT STAGE 4 C Main/Hoof Champagne C Wellington A B Back 8:15 11:40 12:53 13:45 15:59 Rider Distance 41km 55km 66km 93km PAARL Hexberg Hexberg Upper Pentz 0 500 m 0 WORCESTER R301 R45 2 R101 Wemmershoek Exit 55 (LD = Leg Distance and TD = Total Distance) 16 A Waterval 0km Ber g approx. 20min This old-world, luxurious hotel is nestled among 100-year old olive groves against the backdrop of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains.
