School Council
Last week the Annual General Meeting of
School Council was held. At this meeting, the
Annual Report to the School Community was
tabled and discussed. This Report contains a
statement called “What Our School Is Doing”
which outlines what actions were delivered by
our school in the area of Student Learning,
Student Wellbeing & Engagement and Student
Transitions and Pathways in 2012. It also
contains Government School Summary report
which compares our school performance to all
State Government Schools as well as schools
that are like us.
Following the AGM, the first School Council
meeting following the election took place. Office
bearers were elected and I would like to
congratulate the following who were nominated
and elected to their positions:President – Michelle Sapardanis
Secretary – Florence Haining
Treasurer – Stuart Lord
I also welcome Belinda Davies who is a parent
of Riley in Year 3 to Findon School Council. I
look forward to another dynamic year with the
School Council.
School Council Sub-committees
You do not have to be on School Council to be
on a Sub-committee! Nor do you have to
possess particular skills eg. be an accountant to
be on the Finance sub –committee. Just bring
along your enthusiasm and your desire to be
involved.
Sub-committees assist School Council with the
work that needs to be done. They report
regularly at School Council meetings, provide
advice and make recommendations to school
Council which has the final responsibility for
decisions.
At Findon, we have four Sub-committees
1. Finance – monitors the school’s finances
and approves expenditure
2. Buildings and Grounds – has responsibility
for making recommendations about the
maintenance and upkeep of the grounds and
the school buildings
3. Education - oversees the development and
review of all school policies and presents them
to School Council for ratification.
Community Links – this Sub-committee involves
the Parent Contacts who provide a tangible link
between parents and the teacher, and assist
with the school fundraisers.
If you are interested in being on a School Council
Sub-committee please contact me.
Harmony Day
Last Thursday, everyone in Learning Team 2
celebrated Harmony Day to support the inquiry
unit of ‘Where Do We Come From”. Children
came to school dressed in the traditional
costume from the country of their heritage or
wore orange, which is the colour of Harmony
Day. After participating in rotational activities,
students shared traditional foods from their
country. It truly was a real celebration. Harmony
Day is managed by the Department of
Immigration and Citizenship and coincides with
the United Nations International Day for the
Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It is a day of
cultural respect, widely celebrated across
schools, childcare centres, community groups,
churches, businesses and federal, state and
local government agencies. The message of
Harmony Day is ‘Everyone Belongs’. We come
from many countries around the world. In the
photo three students are wearing traditional
costume from Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
Special Visitors Day
Last Tuesday, Learning Team 1, celebrated
Special Visitors day in line with their unit of work
on My Family, and to celebrate the fantastic
transition all the Prep students have made.
They invited grandparents and special visitors to
school to celebrate their learning this term. Each
student showcased their own learning through
Cuthbert Drive, MILL PARK. 3082.

the sharing of reading,
writing, maths and oral
language activities. The
event was well attended
and it was fantastic to see
our Prep parents and
special visitors already
becoming part of the
Findon community. Like
most school events it
would be impossible to run
without our amazing parent helpers and this event was no
exception with our parent helpers organising, cooking and
hosting a shared sausage sizzle. Special thanks to everyone
who attended or supported this special event.
LEAP
What an amazingly busy week it was! On top of Harmony Day
and Special Visitor’s Day, all students were also involved in
LEAP activities. Our LEAP program for Term 1 began last
Monday, 18 March and continued until Friday 23 March. Many
engaging activities were organised by the Specialist Team for
the students in each learning team. Year 6 students headed
off to Pit Gymnastics on the Monday, the Year 4/5 were
involved in Coach Approach on Tuesday, on Thursday the
Prep/1 had rotation activities and on Friday the Year 2/3 had
an incursion called The History Box. During the day when the
students were at LEAP, the teachers planned the curriculum
for Term 2 to ensure rigorous and consistent programs across
all classes in their learning team.
News from Paula in South America……..
Michael and I have just finished our four day Inca Trail
reaching a height of 4215 metres above sea level. It was
gruelling! We were literally walking amongst the clouds at
altitudes so high. We were up at 3.45 am on the last
morning of the trek to watch the sun rise as we came
over the Sun Gate Mountain to see Machu Picchu, the
lost city of the Incas! It was simply breathtaking! You'll
never guess who was there at Machu Picchu at the same
time.....Catriona Roundtree and the 'Getaway' film crew!
Apparently they are in South America for 20 days doing a
Getaway special. Guess who was asked to be
interviewed about our trek? Amazon was a real highlight
and I have truly fallen in love with Cusco and the Inca
History. Off to Lima today and then onto Buenos Aires,
Iguazu Falls, Rio De Janerio where it is the tail end of
Carnivale season. Included is a photo of Paula and her
husband, Micheal, at Machu Picchu with Catriona
Roundtree.
FABULOUS FINDON FEEDBACK
At times, I receive some affirming feedback about our
students, staff, school programs, special events etc. It would
be really fabulous to be able to share this with the school
community to recognise these positive efforts and
achievements. I invite families to give us positive feedback to
share. You can either use the feedback box at reception or
email the Findon email address which is listed at the bottom
of the Newsletter. The school email address is
[email protected]
Received last week from a parent with a child in Learning
Team 2........
Please forward thanks to all the staff and students involved
in Harmony Day. It was lovely to see the sea of colour, taste
AMAZING and interesting food (thanks to the families) and
most importantly to watch the students involved in fun
activities and having a ball. It's a beautiful event every year,
always a bit different, celebrating our wonderful cultural
diversity.
Sad News
Kirsten Burnett, a teacher at Mill Park Heights Primary
School and former teacher of Findon Primary school
has passed away after a battle with Cancer. Our thought
and condolences are with Kirsten’s family at this time.
Just a reminder………………..
School finishes at 1.30pm this Thursday as it is the last
day of term. It has been an amazingly busy and
productive term, and I would like to thank all the children
for trying so hard with their learning, and the teachers for
their never failing commitment to make the learning as
best as they possibly can for the students. Also many
thanks go to all the parents who have taken the time to
assist at school in many ways.
I wish all families a joyful Easter celebration and hope
everyone has a safe happy holiday break. Look forward to
seeing everyone back next term.
Food For Thought:
Observe good faith and
justice toward all nations.
Cultivate peace and
harmony with all.
-George Washington
Regards
Angelika Ireland
At Findon Primary School, our vision is that our children will become life-long learners with positive feelings of self-worth. As
young adults they must be confident, tolerant, adaptable and resilient. They will be effective team members who understand
their rights and responsibilities within the global community.

MATHLETICS NEWS
Findon students have earnt 34 certificates over the last two weeks on Mathletics. Home Group JD earnt 7 last week,
closely followed by Home Group EM with 6 certificates. Remember Mathletics is a great resource to practice what you
learn in the classroom. Try to do a mix of course work and Live Mathletics.
Well done to Anamika Sudhi Nair (EM) on reaching her GOLD certificate (on December 15th, 2012). That one was missed
at the end of the year, so she will be receive this at this week’s assembly.

Student absence and late arrivals
Here are the student absences for last week.
These statistics cover the five days for the period Monday 18/3/2013 to Friday 22/3/2013.
CONGRATULATIONS to Miss Pool’s class for having 100% attendance twice this term!!
Well done and keep up the fantastic effort! HP will be able to enjoy the fabulous sports equipment bag for
the week.
Remember: Coming late to school is a big disruption to your child’s learning and also to the whole class as we
have to stop and explain what learning we are doing at the time. Don’t forget every minute of learning counts.
Occasional unavoidable situations can occur, however regular patterns of lateness are a great concern to your
child’s education and well being.
Tips for calmer school mornings
Children don’t understand time in the same way as grown-ups. This can make school mornings a stressful
time of day for families. Time pressures and competing demands can turn mornings into a combat zone.
Here are some ideas to take some of the pressure out of school mornings – even if things don’t always go
smoothly!
The night before
Try to find out the night before (or even earlier) if there is something special going on at school.
Prepare lunches and set the breakfast table ready for the morning rush.
Get your child to have a bath/shower the night before. This means you won’t have to worry about
this in the morning.
Try to read school newsletters and check bags for notes the night before. You could also try to prepare clothes,
sign school notes, and get schoolbags ready the night before.
In the morning
Getting up an extra 15-30 minutes earlier might help things run more smoothly. Also try to
allow plenty of time to get from home to school. Rushing can really increase stress levels.
Good moods can be infectious. Tackle the morning as positively and as optimistically as you can.
Mornings are easier if your children can do things for themselves. Once your children are old
enough, getting dressed on their own, making their own breakfast, and tidying up after
themselves can all make things easier.
If your children are young, remind them what they are meant to be doing and when. Simple ‘to
do’ checklists, even with pictures, can help as a reminder.
Some children get up more easily if they have an alarm clock.
Try to cut down on distractions. Television is one of the culprits that can distract children from
getting ready. Consider leaving it off, unless it’s a special treat for being ready on time.
Focus on the positives. A rule of thumb here is six positives for every negative. Look for good
behaviour and try to ensure that positive comments outweigh instructions and reprimands.
Use
surprises to celebrate cooperation and being ready on time. A treat in the lunch box, or an
extra story at bedtime might be all it takes.
Try not to give your children extra attention for arguing, whining or stalling. Even negative
attention is an incentive for them to keep arguing, whining and stalling.
Have a great school break and I hope you try some of these tips next term! I’ll be using them
myself with my own children!
Thanks for taking the time to read our Student Wellbeing page—Mary Zaikis

Special Visitors Day
Wow! What a great day we had last Tuesday— We had over 300 people for special Visitors Day in the Prep/One
classes. A fantastic turn out!
The classroom were very busy showcasing some of the learning that we have been doing in our classrooms. It was
lots of fun! The children gave their special visitors a tour of the school and then we had a sausage sizzle altogether in
the courtyard.
We had lots of parent helpers that helped us make this day run extra smooth– especially with the BBQ– a special
mention to Wendy, Gail, Janine, Narelle, Silvio, Kendra, Lafi and Margaret– and anyone else that snuck in to help!
Without your help the teachers wouldn’t have been so cool, calm and collected. And without all of our special
visitor’s the day wouldn’t have been so special! Thanks so much for coming! We really appreciate the time you spent
with us!
From all the students and teachers in Learning Tem One!

WELCOME TO THE ‘OSHC’…
I would like to firstly welcome our new friends Shantelle & Doressa :) They are settling in just fine and
having no trouble playing with the older children. The older children are taking roles as buddies for the
girls. Its wonderful to see them all taking care of one another.
Last week of term one and it has flown. I have been having too much fun with the children. I enjoy coming
everyday and hearing the new stories they have to tell me. It will be sad to say goodbye for a whole 2
weeks. Before we all part, I have an Easter egg hunt planned for this week. We are making Easter baskets
as preparations for our Easter hunt. I can not wait to see all the excitement on the children’s faces.
As school finishes early on Thursday, my program will be running early at 1:30 pm for all those parents
planning on booking their children in.
Have a very happy & safe Easter break everyone :)
