Three ranks of tassels are indicative of the office of the bishop. The school crest was designed in 1959 and incorporates four significant symbols associated with the school. The school crest/coat of arms is displayed on formal school documents, including the school diploma. The four quadrants of the shield symbolize: Top Left: Three angels representing the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Top Right: The California Bear representing the State. Bottom Left: The Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (taught at Santa Barbara Catholic High and Bishop García Diego High School). Bottom Right: Our Lady of Refuge (from the Crest of Bishop Garcia Diego y Moreno). He promulgated California under the protection of our Lady of Refuge. Each California Mission displays an icon of our Lady of Refuge. Motto: Via Veritas Vita: Jesus responded, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” -John 14:6 2013-2014 Annual Report 2 Welcome We are pleased to present the 2013-2014 Annual Report and remain incredibly grateful for what it represents: a generous and involved community of parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, past and present trustees, and friends who believe in our mission of providing an outstanding Catholic high school education to our young people. On behalf of all the faculty and staff, thank you for the many ways that you have helped to create Bishop Diego’s legacy of excellence in Catholic education over the years. To the entire community, please accept my heartfelt gratitude for everything you do to help Bishop Diego thrive as a truly special place of learning and discovery for our students. The heart of a Bishop education is not just our beautiful campus; it is the relationship between our faculty and students and the bond they establish as they engage in learning. If it’s been a while, I invite you to visit us and learn about Bishop Diego first hand. Visit our campus, talk to our students, stop by the classrooms and discover what Bishop Diego offers our students each and every day. Kindly, Dr. Paul Harrington Head of School Dear Parents, Benefactors, Alumni, and Friends, As I reflect on the year, the word that comes to mind is vibrancy. Bishop Diego High School is a remarkably vibrant, innovative and open community. That vibrancy shows in our students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and benefactors. Vibrancy is seen in: • The four new faculty members who have joined our ranks • The continual academic innovation as exemplified by the new Pier and Margo Gherini Center for Multimedia Arts and Technology • The legendary contributions of our parents and the debut of our new parent ambassadors program • Our students who demonstrate excellence in their accomplishments, character, and aspirations to do great things. I believe the vibrancy seen at Bishop has its root in three things: our faith in God, in a school culture that consistently strives for academic and personal excellence, and a core belief that as we pursue new heights, we must do it with concern and care for others. In the process our students learn to be magnanimous in their dreams, steadfast in commitments, wise in their pursuits, and generous in their willingness to give back and pay it forward. Thank you to everyone who contributes to Bishop’s vibrant spirit and success. Go Cardinals! We are excited to introduce the Pier and Margo Gherini Center for Multimedia Arts and Technology. Our objective is to provide students with real world experiences in the fields of study where they have genuine interests. Thank you to the Gherini Family for their continued loyal support and generous gifts to Bishop Diego. Each Bishop Diego student will have the opportunity to benefit from the use of the Gherini Center. With its grand opening of phase one in August 2014, the Gherini Center is designed to create a learning environment where students are actively engaged in a state of the art and comfortable setting. Equipped with the most current and advanced technologies, coupled with an expert faculty member, the Gherini Center provides students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to be successful in all areas of multimedia arts and technology. This advanced studio has added a new control booth, sets, lighting grid, green-screen bay, and 20-seat classroom to the Bishop campus. In addition, forty-eight (48) iMac computers have been purchased to furnish the upgrade and allow repurposing of equipment to the classrooms. Broadcast equipment has been purchased to replace the obsolete equipment from the former studio. The completion of the Gherini Center celebrates completion of phase one of a three phase capital campaign. “We are moving in the right direction here at Bishop Diego as we strive to expose all of our students to new technology,” Dan Yokubaitis, Technology teacher said. “It’s an exciting time for our students. Born to William and Catherine, Mike had 7 siblings and a happy, loving childhood. He attended Our Lady of Guadalupe School, then Santa Barbara High School, being drafted shortly before graduation. After AIT training Mike married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Davis. Mike and Carolyn returned to Santa Barbara to start their family when Mike had completed military service. Throughout his life Mike was fortunate to be employed at St. Francis Hospital for 24 years as a carpenter, until it's closing in 2001. Mike was then employed at Bishop Garcia Diego High School. A tour of the campus would reflect his passion for woodworking and skill for fixing just about anything that needed repair. Mike treasured his years at Bishop, starting every day with a moment of prayer in the chapel before others arrived. He touched many with his spirit of humility, generosity and unfailing good humor. Even though a job well done would have satisfied him, Mike was the recipient of much affection and appreciation expressed often and in many ways by the Bishop community. Everyone he met became a friend. Mike's other interests included motorcycle riding which started when he was 16. He was also an aviation enthusiast who built and flew his own ultralight aircraft. At the time of his death he was building a touchscreen jukebox with his son. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mike’s wife Carolyn and the entire Mullen family. 2013-2014 Annual Report 20 tribute gifts in honor Father Tom Elewaut Allison Carr '11 Lauren Carr '08 David Pilkington ‘09, Julia Pilkington Devon Carr '11 ‘13, & Justin Bogart ‘12 Bryan ‘08 & Melissa ‘10 Georgi Zac & Karen Bogart Marjorie Covell Chelsea ‘05 & Noelle ‘09 Rev Charles Hofschulte, CJ Chris & Pam Brown Linda Williams The BVM’s Ralph Iannelli Tina (Ferrario) Gustavson '65 Randy & Roxanna Solakian Bille Ceriale Richard Ceriale '74 Carol Krommer Edward Barrier '84 Barbara Ceriale '69 Gene Ceriale '46 Lash’s 50th Anniversary Michele (Ceriale) Snyder '71 David '60 & Louise Borgatello Class of 1955 Augusta Lord’s 100th birthday Margaret (Hamill) '55 & Darwin Ferry John '64 & Mary Ann (Garland) '65 Gherini Class of 1958 John '58 & Mary Lou Williams Medina Family David & Patty (Lynch) '60 Medina Class of 1961 Judie Boman '61 Father Salvadore Parisi, OFM Class of 1963 Dr. Steven '68 & Marian Hull Glenda (Snyder) '63 & Mike Gabrielson James Petrini '81 The Baran Family Tony Baran '00 Class of 1968 Roberta (Berryman) '68 & George Lehtinen David Schaeman Michael & Jessica Schaeman Patrick Shirek ‘02 Alan & Kathleen Shirek Troy ‘13 & Aaron ‘08 Skinner Denise Skinner & Tim Gallagher Evelyn Slaught ‘15 Norm & Claire Slaught Bob and Nana Talevi David '60 & Louise Borgatello Sam Verhasselt ‘09 Loretta Verhasselt Steve ‘82, John ‘83, Matt ‘87, Mike ‘88, Katelyn ‘12 John ‘58 & Mary Lou Williams Sister Helen Wolkerstorfer Ken Skiff & Gina Bifano John and Janna Price David '60 & Louise Borgatello * Deceased Every effort is made to avoid errors, misspellings and omissions. Focused On Our Future The Bishop Diego High School Endowment Fund Gifts to the Bishop Diego Endowment Fund are critical to the future of the school. From supporting Student Scholarships or Capital Improvements to enhance the campus, or Faculty Compensation and Professional Development Funds, here are ways your gift supports the students and teachers at Bishop. Endowed Student Support Helping a deserving student attend Bishop is an investment that has endless returns. Your gift to endow a new scholarship or to contribute to the general endowment will help Bishop provide the most generous tuition assistance packages possible. This is critical in a time when a growing number of families are requesting financial aid to help provide the best possible education for their child. Endowed Faculty Support Providing competitive compensation packages for new and current faculty who invest their careers in our students is a school priority. As the endowment portfolio for faculty compensation and professional development funds grow, so too does Bishop’s ability to offer a competitive edge in attracting and retaining top faculty. Capital Improvements Campus enhancements and additions are a natural part of any schools history and growth. Gifts to capital initiatives ensure that the school will offer students and faculty the finest educational environment in which to learn and teach. These gifts would support technology advances, building projects, or facility improvements.
