Dear Members and Colleagues,
On behalf of the CIOPORA Board I am happy to invite you to the
55th CIOPORA Annual General Meeting, which will be held April 25 – 28,
2016, in Lisbon, Portugal.
It seems that the each year at CIOPORA is busier, and perhaps more
exciting, than the last. Since our AGM 2015 in Hamburg, CIOPORA has
made many further steps to implement its strategic plan, including having
established its educational program, The CIOPORA Academy, which will
increase the awareness and understanding of IP rights in our industry.
Additionally, we have improved our internal and external communication,
offered assistance to groups of members for the enforcement of their rights,
given more strength to Crop Sections and developed a stronger knowledge
base regarding Biodiversity and Patents.
The preparations for AGM 2016 have been wrought with changes – including our decision to
move location from Istanbul to Lisbon – but we are confident that all our decisions are for the
best. We are putting together an event that will provide a platform for very rich discussions on
both the internal workings of our organization as well as our representation to the world. The
major focuses of the internal discussions at the AGM 2016 will include Essentially Derived
Varieties, Patents and Biotechnology. For the open part of our AGM on Wednesday afternoon
we will invite representatives from the EU Trademark Office (OHIM) to report about new
developments in trademarks and their Observatory Program for the fight of IP infringements. A
representative of the EU-Commission will also be invited to give an update on the implementation
of the Nagoya Protocol. Additionally we will invite speakers to give an overview on the
ornamental and fruit industries in Portugal, as well as a presentation on the worldwide Berry
industry.
But, as you know, business at AGM does not go without a proper accompaniment of fun.
CIOPORA is preparing evening programs that will allow for prime networking against the
backdrop of picturesque Lisbon. We aim to cover a large amount of business while at the same
time enjoying the charm and sunny disposition (and maybe a bit of Fado music) in this ancient
city on the River Tagus.

stunning 19th century palace with a garden that classifies
as a ‘National Monument’.
All meetings during the AGM week 2016 will take place
in the Pestana Palace.
A number of Standard and several Executive rooms are
currently blocked for CIOPORA members and guests at
this hotel. Please use the attached booking form for your

Includes breakfast buffet, WiFi and VAT. City Tax is
not included.
Conditions:
Check-in time is 3 pm; check-out time is 12 noon. WiFi is
available free of charge. One night stay will be charged
as a guarantee within 24 hours after the booking confirmation. Cancellation prior to 15 days of stay will be
charged 50% of total stay, and cancellation less than 15
days prior results in full charge of reservation.

From the restaurant’s terrace our guests will be
able to take in a sweeping view of the
charming, colorful Lisbon rooftops and the
Tagus River.
