Since the Guild is approaching the end of the first year of my term as President, I want to reflect on the highlights. To serve in this capacity has been a great honor and privilege beyond my expectations--and I thank each of you for your support... This is also the time to evaluate the current year to learn more about our successes and how we can move forward. More importantly, this is the time to clean the slate and start anew with fresh energy and creative ideas to address the Guild’s support of MOAS. In these unpredictable times, much like the talented crew of a racing sailboat, the success of the Guild program year for 2011-2012 required and received some real teamwork. My Crew Members–Our “Top Ten” of 2011-12 were: 1. All of You: record attendance numbers with at least 65-80 members and guests at each of the monthly meetings, excellent and enlightening presentations, under the leadership of 2nd VP Donna Marietta. Our membership is 215 strong, thanks to the Membership Chair Clarice Fooks and the Recognition Tea by Anne Peacock Jacobs. 2. The Ponce Inlet Women’s Club donation in December to the Guild for the 4th time, earmarked for the MOAS Childrens’ Center--a model for other local clubs to emulate. The partnership with the Symphony Guild for a Holiday Tea was another successful collaborative effort. 3. The outstanding success of the November Halifax Art Festival, with Doreen Armstrong at the Helm for the 2nd year, raising $3,000 more than the prior year...the race is on with goals set for 2012 by Chair Gloria Keay, Artist Contact Andrea Pair and Sponsor Chair Larry Riegner. 4. The Festival of Trees kicked off a busy Holiday Season with the skills of Vicky Shultz, returning as skipper to increase treats from 25 area restaurants. the bottom line by $3000, with record attendees enjoying the 5. The 50th Celebration of the Guild--kicked off by senatorial leadership of the Past Presidents joining Donna Jordan and me for a luncheon to discuss the living legacy of the Guild over the years. 9. Statements are solely those of the authors. 386 304-7305 [email protected] April 2012 Volume 49 / Issue 7 Page 2 Clarissa Chester, MOAS Guild President 1992-95 Many years prior to joining the MOAS Guild, Clarissa Chester's interest was raised when she heard about the fossil skeletal remains of the giant sloth being "unearthed", and the local Museum wanting to raise money to display this unusual find. She volunteered to give presentations to the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs to create awareness, excitement and to ask for assistance to fund a pod at the Museum to house the assembled sloth. Many other organizations were involved and the response was very gratifying and productive for the Museum. Several years later Linda Williams invited Clarissa to attend a Guild meeting and she was impressed with the dedication of the hard-working group, and joined in 1989. In 1990, Clarissa became Treasurer under Williams as President, and was Vice President under 1991 President Ann Gallion, and succeeded Ann in 1992 due to Ann’s move out of state. During her three years of presidency, the Halifax Art Festival moved from the ocean front terrace to the Marriot to the main campus of Daytona Beach Community College. The moves minimized inclement weather for the artists' displays and afforded much more parking for attendance. Finding a home that would ensure the success of the Halifax Art Festival was very critical as it was one of the two functions that funded the Guild's major projects, which at that time was restoring the Dow collection. The other benefit was the lovely La Primavera event. Although Clarissa Chester felt like she went in as President on "wing and a prayer", her officers Bonnie McCullugh, Joan Peck, and Sybil Borns gave strong support and experience for her first year. The officers for 1994-95 included Jan Griffin, Libby Hopson, Marilyn Sager, Evelyn McDonald and Beverly Scott. Their guidance and leadership helped the Guild to grow and accomplish its endeavors with its head held high. During 1994-95, the Guild spent a lot of time and effort working toward the development of the Spanish Village in St. Augustine, thanks to the generosity of Mr. Kenneth Dow, who endowed the Museum not only with his personal possessions--furniture, chandeliers, crystal, paintings, and if that wasn't enough--several Muratt houses in St. Augustine, and was named to a list of Florida's 10 most important cultural benefactors. Dow told Clarissa the Guild had surrounded him with their love and he considered them his family. Garry Libby also cultivated Dow's friendship, interest, and motivated him to donate to the Museum. CiCi Brown, Vice President of the Museum Trustees, chaired the North Wing expansion--known as the Dow American Collection--which opened in September 1993. Clarissa Chester felt honored to be a small part of the Guild's success from 1992-1995, and has many treasured memories of the members she was privileged to work with and who enriched her life. She felt it was a privilege to work with the Board of Trustees and Garry Libby as Executive Director. The Guild and the Museum are intertwined and their leadership inspired each one of us to do her best. Clarissa felt that witnessing the dedication, determination, and driving force of the Guild members was compelling. They derived great pride and satisfaction from accomplishing their "labors of love" to assist the Museum in its endeavors. The Guild does their best to perpetuate the Museum's heritage, promote new interests and nurture its growth in the community. To Clarissa, that epitomizes what the Guild is all about and it was her honor and privilege to be a part of it. MOAS President Jan Griffin 1995-1997 During my presidency, we had our first fundraising party at the property in St Augustine in the Muratt House. The Casa Monica Hotel provided our food, wines were from the Sebastian Winery in St. Augustine and the music was provided by the Stetson Jazz Quintet and the Driftwoods. We chartered a bus where we served champagne for attendees not wishing to drive from MOAS. We had four fundraisers at Ron Rice's home (founder of Hawaiian Tropic) on A1A in Ormond Beach. We also held several fundraisers at Gambel Place–fish fries with pontoon boat rides. Park's Seafood prepared the food on the grounds. We also had oldtime crafters and a white elephant sale... ♥ The Guild of MOAS ♥ thanks Interim Executive Directior Deborah B Allen for her outstanding service to the Museum from November 2010-May 2012 and her support of the Guild's volunteer work MOAS Announces New Executive Director The Museum of Arts & Sciences Board of Trustees has named the new Executive Director of the Museum. Andrew M. Sandall has accepted the position and will be starting at MOAS on May 1, 2012. Mr. Sandall comes to the Museum from the Orange County Regional History Center in Orlando, FL, where he has served since 2008 as the Assistant Director. Prior to moving to Florida, Mr. Sandall served as the Executive Director of the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts and the Friends of the Hermitage, both in New Jersey. In addition, he has served in several curatorial positions throughout the United Kingdom. Originally from the United Kingdom, Mr. Sandall received his MA in Museum Studies from Leicester University and his BA in Environment, Leisure & Heritage Management from the University College of Ripon and York St. John. MOAS Board of Trustees President Carol Lively Platig stated, "We are extremely pleased to have such an experienced and educated leader to serve as the Executive Director of the Museum of Arts & Sciences and are looking forward to introducing him to our community."
