Quality care close to home with the support of loved ones Rehabilitation services have now commenced at Wangaratta Private Hospital, offering high quality private rehabilitation services closer to home for patients residing in Northeast Victoria. The purpose of the Wangaratta Private Hospital Rehabilitation Unit is to provide treatment to patients requiring specialist rehabilitation with the clinical treatment goal of improving the functional status of a patient to enable them to return to independent living within optimal time frames. The Rehabilitation service features 6 private rooms, skilled specialists, advanced equipment and experienced staff. Allied health teams work collaboratively with the rehabilitation physician to tailor inpatient (overnight) programs aimed at optimising recovery from orthopaedic (upper and lower limbs), musculoskeletal, reconditioning, cardiac and neurological (non-stroke) conditions. Wangaratta Private Hospital CEO, Mrs Sheryl Keir reported that Ramsay Health Care has developed a reputation for the delivery of rehabilitation services across Australia. Wangaratta Private Hospital has utilised the knowledge and expertise of our Ramsay Rehabilitation facilities, coupled with the expertise of current and recently employed nursing, allied health and a specialist rehabilitation physician to develop programs. Education and training, data collection, regulations, policies and quality activities have been developed in order to provide a range of Best Practice Rehabilitation Programs to suit the needs of our patients. Dr Penelope Smith welcomes the opening of the Rehabilitation Unit situated with the Wangaratta Private Hospital. “This 6 bed unit will admit patients referred to this service whose goals are improving mobility and function post surgery or acute illness. Dr Penelope Smith Rehabilitation Physician Dr Penelope Smith is a Rehabilitation Physician with extensive experience in orthopaedic and neurorehabilitation. Her special interests are management of disability post stroke and other acquired brain injury, and post spinal surgery. Many patients are living in the Community suffering chronic disability related to a range of conditions such as multiple sclerosis, past polio, spina bifida and cerebral palsy that often present a number of quality of life issues. These issues can often be ameliorated by rehabilitative strategies offered by a team of rehabilitation professionals. Dr Smith has worked across a range of healthcare facilities in metropolitan Melbourne and, since moving to the area in 2012 has been appointed as Clinical Director Sub-Acute Services at Northeast Health Wangaratta. Dr Smith offers outpatient consultations in Wangaratta. Co-location of this unit within the Hospital allows the patient continued medical and surgical specialist oversight during their rehabilitation phase providing patients the very best of care in all aspects of their health management”. Electronic Discharge Summary Wangaratta Private Hospital is excited to announce the implementation of an electronic discharge summary process, set to roll out in early 2016. The Electronic Discharge Summaries (EDS) will allow the swift transmission of patient information post discharge to your practice via your secure messaging provider directly into your medical software. The summaries are computer generated, so they will be legible and provide a detailed documentation of your patient’s admission, the treatment that they received and the outcome of that treatment. We ask for your patience during this roll out and the initial implementation stages. As the EDS is rolled out, we encourage all GPs and Practice Managers to provide us with feedback on enhancements that would improve the form further. ENT SURGEON profiles Mr Anthony Guiney MBBS, FRACS Specialty interest in nasal and sinus surgery, rhinoplasty, paediatric ENT Anthony was the Former Head of Unit Royal Melbourne Hospital Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Unit. Anthony has been providing ENT services to Essendon and the surrounding North West area of Melbourne for 20 years, while maintaining a regional practice in Euroa during this time. Mr Dan Gordon B.Med, MS (ORL), FRACS Specialty interest in rhinology and paediatric disorders. Dan obtained his primary medical degree from the University of Newcastle and a Masters of Surgery from Sydney University. He commenced his accredited specialist training in ENT and Head and Neck Surgery in 2010 through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. As an ENT trainee he has worked throughout many of the main metropolitan hospitals including Austin Health, Monash Medical, The Alfred and The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. During the last year Dan has been consulting and operating in Wangaratta and Albury as a locum ENT surgeon for Mr Gerard Fogarty and Dr Eliza Tweddle.
