It eats away at your health and slowly robs you of life’s pleasures. moking causes a wide array of health problems, including cancer, heart disease, stroke and lung disorders. Here’s a run-down on how it can ruin your body. Skin Smoking speeds up the aging process and increases the appearances of premature wrinkles. If you have just started smoking, you may not see the effects until about 10 years later. You can easily identify a smoker by the face, hence the term ‘smoker’s face. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Smoking is the main cause of COPD. It is a progressive and incurables disease in which the airways and lungs are damaged due to chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the tubes that carry air into the lungs) and emphysema (loss of elasticity of the alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs). Patients with COPD suffer from breathing difficulties, which can lead to death.. COPD is expected to be the third leading causes of deaths globally by 2020. Atherosclerosis Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. It happens due to the accumulation of fatty deposits on the inner walls of arteries. The heart has to work harder to pump blood through narrowed, clogged arteries. Atherosclerosis occurs more often and more severely in- you guessed it –smokers. Angina pectoris Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen circulating in the body. Angina pectoris, or chest pain, happen when the heart muscle don’t get enough oxygen during exertion. Smoking also makes the heart beat faster and this increases the need for oxygen, so the heart pumps even harder. Osteoporosis Smoking leads to decreased bone density, or osteoporosis. When the bone becomes porous, the risk of the fracture increases. Studies have shown that smokers who have a fracture suffer from more complications, besides taking a longer time to heal, compared to non-smokers. Infertility Cigarette smoking is strongly linked to infertility and sudden infant death syndrome, even if it is from inhaling second-hand smoke. Male smokers tend to have lower sperm count and poor sperm quality. Erectile dysfunction is also more common among smokers. Women who are exposed to second-hand cigarette smoke tend to take longer to conceive, while smokers have difficulty carrying a pregnancy to full term. The risk of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy (abnormal pregnancy outside the womb), low birth weight and preterm babies 5 is higher among pregnant smokers. Issu e 15, V o l u m e 7, 2014 Stroke The Framingham Heart Study found that heavy smokers (more than 40 cigarettes a day) have twice the risk of stroke than light smokers (less than 10 sticks a day). But here’s the good news – within 2 years of quitting, stroke risk falls significantly, and within 5 years, the risk is the same as for non –smokers. Cancer Smoking is leading cause of cancer, especially of the lung, esophagus, larynx (voice box), mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, pancreas, stomach and cervix. Smoking can cause acute myeloid leukaemia, a type of blood cancer. Cholesterol Tobacco smoke interacts with high blood cholesterol and increases you risk of heart disease. Smokers also have lower level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the good cholesterol that helps reduce plaque formation in the arteries. Heart attack Tobacco smoke is a major risk factor for the heart disease, beside hypertension, hypercholesterolemia ( high cholesterol), obesity, diabetes and a sedentary lifestyle. The risk of getting heart attack doubles for a person who smokes a pack a day. And if the person continues to smoke after a heart attack, there is a greater risk of second heart attack. Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) Smoking constricts blood vessels. When this happens to the arteries carrying blood to the leg and arm muscles, it is known as PVD. A narrowed artery may be blocked by a blood clot. This may lead to incessant infection / inflammation of a limb, which may lead to amputation in severe cases. Circulation The nicotine release in cigarette smoke temporarily increase blood pressure, heart rate and the amount of blood pumped by the heart. It also increases blood flow in the arteries of the heart, while constricting the arteries in the arms and legs. Cigarette smoke also contains carbon monoxide, which reduces the availability of the oxygen in the blood, heart and all other part of the body. Tobacco smoke makes blood clot faster, as well as multiplies blood clots in the body. This puts the smoker at the risk of cardiovascular disease, more so if the person has hypertension. 6 Sources Info: HealthToday/ July 2014 Issue 15, Volume 7, 2014 Modern industrial hygiene, vol.1-3 Jimmy L. Perkins Each time I teach my course Risk Recognition, Evaluation and Control in the Workplace for Physical, Chemical, Biological and Radiological Hazards (Comprehensive Industrial Hygiene Review), the student ask: ‘’ Is there a textbook that goes with this course?” At present, and even more so in the future, the best answer may well be Modern Industrial Hygiene by Professor Jimmy Perkins. This book, volume 1, is the first of four books that, when completed, will address the complete subjects that make up the sciences and the art of industrial hygiene. This first volume covers the subjects of, for example: • What is industrial hygiene? • The history of industrial hygiene; • Toxic chemicals in the workplace; • Occupational exposure routes; • The physical nature of gases, vapors and aerosols; and • Methods and strategies of qualitative exposure assessment. Some of the most current and complexes information can be found in the three subject areas. These are [1] process and their chemicals hazards, [2] sampling strategies and statistics, and [3] field and laboratory analytical chemistry, as follows: • Industrial processes and their toxic chemicals which chapter includes: abrasive blasting; boilers and furnaces; confined spaces; diesel engines; electroplating; grinding, polishing and buffing; laboratories; machining and cutting oils; metal surfaces treatment; painting; plastics; and welding and allied processes; • Statistical approaches treatment of field and laboratory data, which chapters focus on mathematical modeling, including; emission rate modeling; dilatation and mixing; analysis of distributions; variability and confidences intervals; analysis of variance; and determinants of exposure, all of which, taken together can guide the industrial hygienist in preparing strategies for quantitative surveying in workplace. • Method of sampling, analysis and monitoring of gases and vapors, which chapters focus on laboratory analysis; sampling of gases, vapors and aerosol; real time monitoring of air contaminants; and quality control and quality assurances in analytical laboratories. Volume 2 in the Modern Industrial Hygiene series was published by AGGIH in 2003. It deals with ‘’ Biological Aspects’’ which includes the subject of ergonomics. Volume 3 will deal with Control of Chemical Agents.’’ Volume 4 will deal with ‘’ Physical Agents’ including noise, vibration, pressure, heat and cold, ionizing and non- ionizing radiation. It is important to note that the four volumes in this series are, and will be, a tour-de-force- for Professors Perkins. Although he has authors and assistance with 7 many of the chapters, all of the material was either edited or has been written by him. Professor Perkins’ mastery of the body of knowledge that is industrial hygiene will be a benchmarks for us all. Issue 15, Volume 7, 2014 Modern industrial hygiene, vol.1-3 Jimmy L.
