The Miniature Town in the
Geographical Garden
The Miniature Town was officially inaugurated in June, 2012. The building
work is constantly going on and is expected to be finished by 2026 approximately. The houses are placed according to the old registration drawings
and the exact ground levels. However,
the streets are made in double width
for the sake of passage. The numerous
miniature people and animals put life
into the backyards. In the shop of the
Miniature Town it is possible to buy
souvenirs from your visit to Kolding
Miniby. It is always possible to get
into contact with a Mini-Builder who
is ready to answer any questions from
the visitors.
1. Sct. Jørgen’s Hospital
The hospital was built in 1558. It almost functioned as a nursing home
where the poor people of the town got
shelter, food, and care. In 1838 the red
building of the hospital was built north
of the original hospital. In 1917 these
two buildings were built together as
they look today. In 1975 the building
was thoroughly repaired by Kolding
Kommune and converted into meeting
rooms for the cultural associations of
the town.
2. The Prison of Horsens and
Crome & Goldschmidt
This shop was located at Adelgade/
Akseltorv. Crome & Goldschmidt had
several of the articles they sold manufactured in the Prison of Horsens,
amongst others woven fabrics. Take a
look at the nice window decoration. In
this building the first daily newspaper
of Kolding, Kolding Avis, was published in 1849, too.
3. Sankt Nicolai Church
The Church of Sankt Nicolai was
named the Church of Kolding un-
til 1925 where the Christ Church was
built. The Church of Kolding was built
in the 13th century. In 1885 the white
village church got a new facing of large
red bricks, the tower was made higher
terminating in a steeple. The memorial
tablet on the northern aisle commemorates the soldiers who died in 1849. A
true copy of the carillon and the striking clock of Sankt Nicolai Church can
often be heard from the church tower
of the Miniature Town. Occasionally
the Wedding March can be heard from
the organ of the church, too.
4. TheTown Hall of Kolding
The town hall shown in the Miniature
Town was built in 1840 and got a lifetime of only 35 years. At that time this
building could accommodate the whole
administration staff of the town, and in
addition there was room for the police
station, the court, the prison, and the
fire station. Take a look at the prison
yard and the fire engines in the building
behind the town hall. In the prison Mr.
Hans Hansen, prisoner from Herslev,
can be seen in the barred window. This
is in accordance with the 1870 census.
5. Children’s Home
The oldest children’s home of Kolding is Kolding Børneasyl. It was built
in 1868. There was room for 100 children, and the accommodation was free
of charge. The economy was based on
private gifts in addition to proceeds
from bazaars and other arrangements.
In 1954 the children’s home moved to
Søgade, and Kolding Børneasyl was
torn down. Today the area is a green
area in connection with the surroundings of the Castle of Koldinghus.
6. The Stables of Koldinghus
The present buildings were built in the
17th century. In the 1860s they were
used for horse breeding for military
purposes. The courtyard was used for
the training of young horses. In the
small thatched cottage next to the Castle
of Koldinghus the attendant lived. It
was his job to prevent the citizens of
the town from steeling bricks from the
ruins. In the years 1943 to 1945 the Stables
accommodated the headquarters of
Gestapo for South Jutland. A prisoner’s
cell from this period is preserved and is
now a part of the Museum of Koldinghus.
7. The Ruins of the Castle of Koldinghus
The Castle of Koldinghus was founded
at the end of the 13th century. In March
1808 the castle was destroyed by fire as
Spanish mercenaries lighted fire in the
open fireplaces to a disastrous degree.
In the 1860s the Castle of Koldinghus
was still a ruin. In the 1930s the big
tower was re-erected. The rebuilding of
Koldinghus was finished in the period
1972-1994 by the architects named Exner.
Approx. 1 million bricks were used for
the construction of the Castle of Koldinghus in the Miniature Town, and it
took 5 men approx. 5 years to build it.
The building was made in the workshops as 53 parts, and finally they were
assembled in the Miniature Town.
Workshops
The buildings of the Miniature Town
are made in the workshops at Lykkegårdsvej. Here you will also find the
drawing office of the Miniature Town
where the drawings are made on the basis of old pictures, registrations, and fire
taxations. The local city archive staff
has been very helpful in the researching
work, too . In our tile works bricks and
roof tiles are manufactured and burnt
in our own ceramic ovens. We are also
making timberings, windows, doors,
signs, and fittings completely from basics. The same applies to curtains and
window decorations. Especially the
window decorations make Kolding Miniby different from most other miniature
towns where the windows are dark.
Information about the
Association of Kolding Miniby
The association of Kolding Miniby was founded in
1996 by 17 interested persons from Kolding. The purpose was to rebuild the city of Kolding as it looked
in the period 1860-1870, in a scale of 1 to 10. Today
(2015) the association has approx. 280 members of
which approx 60 persons are active. The Mini-Builders are voluntary people who have retired from work,
and they have till now built almost 350 buildings of
the 700 buildings planned.
